Problem with Xfce-svn & thunar

Hi, I've got a problem with Xfce-svn installed via pacman from
Server = http://arch.os-zen.net/pkg/xfce-svn
After logging, Xfce is loading and after while I can see 2 panels and black screen (and without icons on desktop) although I set the wallpaper. It shows up after ca 5 minutes. What's more - when I want to start Thunar I must wait few minutes. I thought it was caused by some error with thunar package, but I've updated thunar few times since it happened first time.
I post this problem on polish forum, but it's unsolved... Can somebody help me?

How did you start xfce? Was it using CPU while you're waiting? You could try to start xterm after x (without desktop), then run the following to see if each of them works:
· xfdesktop &
· xfce4-panel &
· xfwm4 --daemon

  • Weird problems with XFCE

    So I got a weird problem with XFCE (I think) sometimes everything just stops working, my PPTP vpn, can't start new applications, no shortcut commands on my keyboard works etc. For example when this happened and I tried to open a text document with gedit i got "Process /usr/bin/Thunar exited with status 1" and when I'm connected to my vpn I can't access the internet, not browsing and I can't ping other websites. And in my terminal instead of "icamaxi@localhost" it becomes "[email protected]
    This problem happens randomly and it works if you restart the computer.
    my xinitrc looks like:
    #!/bin/sh
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    exec startxfce4
    I also get this error message sometimes if that helps you
    "(process:1055): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.
    Using the fallback 'C' locale.
    No protocol specified"
    Xorg log
    Another thing that is not related to this problem but that is annoying is that i can't lock my screen, when I try nothing happens, I've tried the shortcut command and also with the actions button applet but none of this work.

    I'm not certain about your first issue, but does it ever occur when you aren't connected ot your VPN?
    For the screen locking problem, what are you using to lock your screen? I use xflock4, and have a keyboard command set up in the keyboard commands to lock my screen.

  • Some little problems with XFCE

    Now that Gnome2 is gone from the repos and Gnome3 is totally inconfigurable I ended up with switching to XFCE and trying to make it look like my old Gnome2 desktop. This works quite good but there are some little things that were easy to manage with Gnome's configuration tools and are a bit trickier to achieve with XFCE.
    1. [Unfixable (patch exists, bug report: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7176)] The workspace switcher applet doesn't allow to switch workspaces with mousescroll though the appropriate option is selected in its settings. I think that this is related to the fact that I'm using Compiz and it has its "viewports" instead of the workspaces since with XFWM everything works properly. Maybe there's a way to make it work with Compiz though?
    2. [Solved (controlling gmusicbrowser via dbus: http://gmusicbrowser.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=dbus_api)] I'm trying to make the multimedia keys of my keyboard work which itself is not a big deal. But XFCE doesn't offer actions to control the media player like "next track" or "play/pause". I'm using gmusicbrowser and couldn't find out how to call these actions through the shell so I don't know what command to assign to the media keys.
    3. [Unfixable (workaround: Guifications, bug report: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7591 )] The nice notification bubbles have "Show" buttons in Pidgin's libnotify notifications but they don't do anything when clicked: neither open a new chat window nor focus to an already opened one. Might be a Compiz effect again, but seems to happen with XFWM, too.
    4. [Unsolved] I can't find the xfapplet-plugin neither in the repos nor in the AUR. Has it been removed together with all the other Gnome2 stuff because of depending on gnome-panel? If so, how realistic would it be to maintain appropriate AUR packages?
    5.[Solved (by activating the "Prompt on logout" option and a launcher for xfce4-session-logout)] I thought, I would have solved this problem but now it appears again: I'm unable to deactivate XFCE's session saving.  I disabled all checkboxes in the first session settings tab and manually edited /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml and its equivalent in ~/.config to look like
    <property name="general" type="empty">
    <property name="FailsafeSessionName" type="string" value="Failsafe"/>
    <property name="SaveOnExit" type="bool" value="false"/>
    <property name="AutoSave" type="bool" value="false"/>
    </property>
    and then removed the cached sessions from ~/.cache/sessions while no session was running. After the next boot everything was ok (apperently because of removing the cached sessions), but the boot after this one was wrong again (last session saved). Is there any success story concerning deactivating the session saving?
    Thanks,
    PhotonX

    linuxfool76: I think, quite many Gnome2 users would be interested (I am interested at least), but unfortunately I don't have any further details either... If I remember correctly there is a thread here on the forums where some user had the idea to make a repo for the whole Gnome2 - but then gave up since this would be unmaintainable. Don't know whether the chances are better for some single GTK2 apps. At least I've found file-roller2 on the AUR but who knows how long it will rest there...
    R00KIE: Yeah, that's a Compiz issue, see the bugreport in post #4.
    onexused: Thanks for the hint! Unfortunately the gnome-deps, gnome-panel and gnome-panel-bonobo are already gone from this repo, but it's a start though.
    alez: Nice idea, I used them on Windows years ago and totally forgot about their existance. Will try.

    Some of the packages are still in the official repos, so it's bigger than it could. Also maybe one could compile some things with less deps (like remove the evolution thing from the gnome-panel deps). But still looks like much bloat for a single package. What do you think?

  • Problem with xfce and/or mouse and keyboard

    Hi!
    Two days ago I've turned on my laptop with Arch and the display manager Slim has frozen immediately. Later on Single-User mode I've uninstalled it. Now in normal mode when I type "startxfce4" everything is showing up, but the mouse and keyboard don't work. I know it's not frozen, because animation of mouse and CPU Frequency Monitor is on.
    Strange fact is that laptop is not connecting with the Internet, so now I don't know where the problem is.
    It's happening when I start xfce both from user and super user.
    Just before those troubles I've updated everything with "pacman -Syu", but I haven't seen anything strange. Also the computer could have been roughly turned off (by unplugging power supply), when was turning on.
    Thanks,
    Gaba

    Sorry for not replying, but I didn't have access to my laptop by this time.
    On grub I have only normal mode and 'fallback' mode, so I have result from 'journalctl' from normal mode.
    I'm sending the fragment of this file where you can see everything after I typed 'startxfce4' in console:
    http://codepad.org/8pYIj8qC
    I see that something is wrong, but after some attempts I don't know how to fix this ^^
    Edit:
    Oh, I forgot to write, that I've tried activate some drivers from 'lspci -k' (there were no "Kernel driver in use:..." in almost every device), but it didn't fi anything.

  • Problems with MythTV SVN

    Hey guys.
    I'm dreaming about updateting my MythTV-system, to the newest in SVN.
    When getting the package from AUR - I'm getting this error:
    # svn co http://svn.mythtv.org/svn/trunk/svn: OPTIONS of 'http://svn.mythtv.org/svn/trunk': could not connect to server (http://svn.mythtv.org)
    So what could this carswe - funny enough It worked with out problems on the MasterBackend - but not on the frontends - What could carse this!

    Since I have some special TVcards - Whivh will nolt work under kernel2.6.30 - I will not use that kernel - and for that reason thed pacman -Syu worked, but afterwards I needing to downgrade the kernel to make the TVtuners work
    So you should be able to rebuild a package - which is allready installed - without beeing forced to do a pacman -Syu. That cannot be real, and gives you several hours up/downgrading to build a newer version of a insta lled package!

    I;ve just installated a brand new arch, with xfcee86 and xfce 4.2, but xfce is not running properly.

    Can someone solve my problem? Tnx

    solved my problem by reinstalling all components (xfree86, gtk etc.)
    tnx anyway

  • [SOLVED] Problems with mutual intergration of different apps

    Hi guys.
    I am an arch newbie. I switched to Arch from distros like openSUSE/Ubuntu because I was frustrated by the fact that many things were hidden from my eyes and I didn't have full control over the system. With Arch I was able to build the system from the ground up and control every aspect of it. This resulted in good performance (system boots in matter of seconds), and stability.
    I chose awesome3 as the window manager, added iDesk and xfce's thunar as the file manager.  This all works nice and fast, but there is one problem. For example, when I download a file in my web browser (chromium) and click the "show in folder" menu item, nothing happens (I'd expect the folder to open in Thunar). Similarly, if I click a link in a roxterm window, the browser won't open, and so on.
    I wonder how it is possible to enable the desired integration between various apps. Is there an unified mechanism for that? Or does every app require individual  approach?
    Thanks.

    File type stuff can be configured with xdg-mime, which is part of the xdg-utils package.  Read its man page.
    I had the exact same problem with chromium and thunar and you can get it to work with:
    xdg-mime default Thunar.desktop application/x-directory
    I found myself doing this sort of thing a lot, and there are utilities to be found that can make it easier.
    However, I just decided to write a simple bash script frontend for xdg-mime a while back that you might find useful. (I wrote it hoping someone would have a use for it I am so excited right now you dont even...)
    associate
    #!/bin/sh
    if [ $# = 1 -o $# = 2 ]
    then
    if [ -e "$1" ]
    then
    TYPE=$(xdg-mime query filetype "$1" | sed 's/;.*$//')
    if [ $# = 1 ]
    then
    APP=$(xdg-mime query default $TYPE)
    if [ -z $APP ]
    then
    APP="NONE"
    fi
    echo $TYPE opens with $APP
    else
    APP=$2.desktop
    if [ -e /usr/share/applications/$APP ]
    then
    echo $TYPE now opens with $APP
    xdg-mime default $APP $TYPE
    else
    echo associate: $APP: no such application installed
    fi
    fi
    else
    echo associate: $1: no such file
    exit 1
    fi
    else
    echo "USAGE:
    associate FILENAME [APPLICATION]"
    exit 1
    fi
    To use it, just copy it to a text file, I suggest calling it "associate", make it executable with "chmod +x associate", and you can run it by doing stuff like:
    $ ./associate my_silly_face.png
    image/png opens with NONE
    $ ./associate my_silly_face.png gpicview
    image/png now opens with gpicview.desktop
    If you haven't done so, now would be a good time to dedicate a directory in your home folder for oddball scripts and programs like these.  Then you can add that directory to your $PATH and use those utilities like any other program, instead of having to explicitly type out the path to the executable.

  • [SOLVED] Lid doesn't suspend anymore with xfce power manager

    The options "When laptop lid is closed" are set to suspend (and used to work), but still, when I close my lid, nothing happens. Using the logout dialog or the suspend button my keyboard works. Is it a problem with xfce-power-manager, or ACPI not registering the lid event anymore? Any idea how to fix that?
    [edit]
    I solved that problem by removing ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-power-manager.xml, killing the power manager and reloging in my session to flush the settings. Then I reconfigured the lid closed action to suspend (and everything else to my liking).

    Sorry to bother you again, but for some reason it doesn't work anymore...
    Somehow it can't lock the GNOME session, because when I enter the above line from /etc/acpi/handler.sh manually as root in TTY1, I get this error:
    ** Message: Failed to get session bus: Befehlszeile »dbus-launch --autolaunch=c9375f4ea0008d92177b28db000009ae --binary-syntax --close-stderr« brach mit von Null verschiedenem Beenden-Status 1 ab: No protocol specified\nAutolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n
    If I enter this command inside GNOME, everything works just fine, it locks the screen and suspends.
    EDIT:
    Setting the XAUTHORITY environment variable properly did the trick. Therefore, I borrowed some lines from here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Su … losing_lid
    Thread marked as SOLVED again.

  • [SOLVED] xfce-panel causing problems with mouse/touchpad

    Since upgrading the packages below  I mouseclicks occasionally do not work.  Also scrolling using the scrollwheel and touchpad doesn't start sometimes. I determined it is not a problem with the mouse or touchpad because 'xev' shows the correct events firing. Also  I see the icon change from arrow to hand when clicking.
    <edit>
    It appears that "xfce4-panel" is the cause. I use tint2 instead of  xfce-panel, but the process running an empty panel is started by default and  somehow interfered with mouse and touchpad events. solved it by removing it from the session, and comment it out in /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml

  • Problem connecting to SVN repository from Safari, works with FF

    *Hello guys,*
    I have a problem with Mac at work. I need to connect to internal SVN repository (https) first with Safari to see if everything is ok and then with my development client/tool - Eclipse.
    Neither works! It just keep connecting and it does not go further.
    But when I put SVN url in Firefox (FF) it ask me for SVN password and let me in. IT WORKS...
    Probably there is a problem with Keychain because it does not even ask me for password. I just see page loading in Safari but nothing happens. Also in Eclipse, nothing happens when I try to add SVN repository location.
    Other guys with MS and Ubuntu PCs can connect to SVN (FF and Eclipse) with no problem.
    Where is the problem?
    Why my Mac could not connect to this particular SVN.

    I digg some findings. When I open the page with Google Chrome it also does not load any thing, just keep loading.
    But when I open SVN url (ssl) with Opera, it behave like Firefox. First it tells me that this site is not trusted and after confirming this alert I get password promt and everything is ok.
    But there is still problem with Safari and Eclipse. Has Keychain anything here to do with this ???

  • Problems with firefox in xfce

    I'm not sure if this is a firefox or xfce's fault, but when I try to open a file or a folder (open containing folder) from the download manager in firefox it does nothing.
    Any clue?

    Well...I don't know if this helps, but I use Firefox and xfce4, and I have no problem with downloads. I click on a link, and get a dialog saying "You have chosen to open <filename> which is <filetype> from <URL>. What should Firefox do with this file?" If I select "Save to Disk", I get a second dialog to select the directory to save it in. If the file takes more than a few seconds to get, the download manager pops up with a nice progress bar. I've never actually had to do anything from the dl manager - it just appears, does the progress bit, and then disappears.
    If there's anything I can tell you about my setup, let me know,

  • Conky autostart with xfce problem

    I followed the instruction in the wiki for autostarting conky with xfce and put 'own_window_type override' in ~/.conkyrc and a desktop file in ~/.config/autostart/ folder. • Dreamweaver CC - Problem with SVN

    I have just upgrated from Dreamweaver CS6 to Dreamweaver CC only to find that CC has a serious problem with SVN.
    When I try to synchronize with SVN I get the following message "Before using this feature, you must enable check-in/check-out. Would you like to enable that feature now?"
    Clicking ok takes me to the servers list. There is only one server available wich is marked as Remote.
    I edit the server and go to advanced tab but when I click enable check-in another pop-up appears saying:
    "If your site is a Subversion site, enabling check in/check out will erase subversion meta data. To work with Subversion you must re-enter your SVN server information and re-synch the entire site"
    Something is seriously wrong here....
    to work with svn dreamweaver wants to have checkin/ checkout enabled but to enable check-in / checkout I have to disable svn!!!!
    Not working with SVN is not an option for us, I will revert to CS6 for now that does not have this problem. This problem makes DW CC completely unusable for people working in group environments. Please have this fixed or post a workaround as we cannot upgrade without this feature.

    I've found a workaround for this (I'm using the Trial to push my bosses into buying but it should probably work with the final version too).
    1.- Set up your site without check out or svn (save)
    2.- Edit your site and add the check out option in servers - make sure you put in a name or it won't let you save later on (don't save)
    3.- Set up your SVN info (say yes to disable check in)
    4.- Save your site and exit Dreamweaver immediately
    5.- Open registry editor and go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Common\13.0\Sites"
    6.- In the list (-Site1,-Site2,-SiteN...) go to the site you want SVN on
    7.- Find the key labeled "SiteServer N\Enable Check In/Check Out" (it should be a value of 0x00000000)
    8.- Edit that key (right-click -> Modify...) and change the "0" to "1"
    9.- OK out of regedit and close it
    10.- Dreamweaver should now be able to connect to SVN without a problem
    It looks like it's an error with the Site Manager in DW, since all I'm doing is changing a setting and it works fine.

    Welcome to the Apple discussion forums.
    As Joeuu stated, assuming you don't have an Intel-based MacBook Pro, that means that your PowerBook is PowerPC-based. There are several steps that should get you back on track.
    First, reset your power management unit (PMU). Follow directions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
    Next, repair permissions by running Disk Utility, located in your mac hd, application/utilities folder. Highlight your hard drive and repair permissions.
    Did you use the software update function or did you download the update from the Apple support site? In any event, download the combo update 10.4.6 from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1046comboforppc.html Updates through the software update function have recently created some unique 'situations', that use of the combo update have solved.
    After the update, repair disk permissions again. This is good housekeeping to do before and after any major software installation.
