Public Folder To Mailbox Map Generator maximum mailbox size

Hello,
I am in the planning stages of a 2010 to 2013 public folder migration.
Upon running the following script to generate the mailbox mappings in 2013 I receive the following error regarding the maximum mailbox size requested.
[PS] C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\scripts>.\PublicFolderToMailboxMapGenerator.ps1 5120MB E:\Migration\
PublicFolders\PFMapNameToSize.csv E:\Migration\PublicFolders\PFMapFolderToMailbox.csv

[25/11/2014 11:32:08] Unable to load public folders...
I want to set the maximum mailbox size to 5GB, however it seems that this is not possible given that some of the existing folders exceed the maximum mailbox size specified.
I have increased the mailbox size gradually until there are no errors reported, but this leaves me with a maximum mailbox size of 50GB which is not what I require.
There is circa 45 GB of data in the PF hierarcy currently, with the largest folder containing around 42 GB of data.
I thought the idea was that the mapping generator would split the public folder data up and distribute it across multiple mailboxes as required?
Can anyone assist with achieving this please?
Regards
Matt

Hi Belinda,
Thanks for the reply. I've done some more investigating, as I thought the public folders sizes being reported were larger than expected.
Upon running the Get-PublicFolderStatistics cmdlet across the public folder hierarchy I can indeed see that the largest public folder we have is only 4.46GB in size, not the 42GB being reported by the generator.

Going back a step - before running the PublicFolderToMailboxMapGenerator.ps1
, the issue is initially occurs when running the Export-PublicFolderStatistics.ps1 as this is where the folder sizes are calculated and output to the PFMapNameToSize.csv. This is where the folder size is inflated by 10 times!
Is this a bug?
Does anyone know how to change this behaviour?

    Hi,
I have public folder on exchange 2003 and separate public folder on exchange 2010. On exchange 2010 user mailbox, I can see both 2003 and 2010 public folders. On exchange 2003 user mailbox, I can only see 2003 public folders. It is not the permission issue
as I have given the user "owner" right and see not able 2010 public folder inless i move 2003 user mailbox to 2010 exchange.
Appreciate if anyone could help me if to point me to directions or any hotfix I can run?
    Thank you very much.

Are you using OWA or Outlook to view the public folders?
If you're using OWA, the reason you can't see the folders is that OWA in Exchange 2003 uses WebDAV, which is no longer present in Exchange 2010.
If you're using Outlook, you'll need to use the troubleshooting logs to determine the cause of the problems.
It could be related to Outlook trying to connect directly to 2010 mailbox server instead of CAS. Because normally the mailbox server is installed without the CAS role, it does not allow a direct Outlook connection. Or it could be something else,
    like authentication.

  • Exchange server 2013 supported mailbox databases and public folder databases

I want to know about Exchange server 2013 SP1 Standard and Enterprise version support how many Mailbox databases and Public folder Databases? Total Mailbox and Public folder databases supported information.
I Know as below but not clear:
    1) Exchange server 2013 SP1 Sandard edition support 5 Databases, It's include Public folder databases, total=5 or 5 mailbox databases+5 public folder databases=10 databases
    2) Exchange server 2013 SP1 Enterprise edition support 100 Databases, It's include Public folder databases, total=100 or 100 mailbox databases+100 public folder databases=200 databases

  • Mail Sender Adapter - read from public folder.

    Hello Experts.
I have a scenario, where I need to read an incoming mail from a public folder, and after mapping the attachment (which is a csv) I need to put the result as a file in a shared folder.
right now the problem is, I am not sure how to access the public folder.
should I use one of the exchange users, and try to access the public folder?
what should I be writing in the URL parameter in the mail sender adapter ? (imap://server/???/public folder ?)
Also - in case I will want to switch the location of the mail to a private foler inside of the user mailbox - what is the URL parameter in that case?
Anyone ever did something like this and can help?
    Thanks,
    Imanuel Rahamim.

    Hi Imanuel,
do u mean u want to pick the mail which contains an attachement from a specified folder instead of inbox?
u can configure the URL like imap://host:port/path/PublicFolder.
after PI received the mail. we can use PayloadSwapBean to get the attachement payload and do following message mapping.
ur question: Also - in case I will want to switch the location of the mail to a private foler inside of the user mailbox - what is the URL parameter in that case?
do u mean u want to pick the mail from a specified mail account? if like this, create an user for the interface only. then configure the UserName/Password in the channel.

  • Public Folder Free/Busy event 4003 and 4004

    Hello,
We migrated from exchange 2003 to 2010. Migration was successfull; all mailboxes are moved, public folder replicated and exchange 2003 was uninstalled like it should.  Public Folder Hierarchy was moved to the new administrative group.
Since the last exchange 2003 server was uninstalled, we get events 4003 and 4003 on our CAS servers.
    event id 4004
Process Microsoft.Exchange.InfoWorker.Common.Delayed`1[System.String]: Unable to find a public folder server for organizational unit (OU) EXCHANGE ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT).
The service will attempt to find a random server, which may take a longer time to service the request.

Process Microsoft.Exchange.InfoWorker.Common.Delayed`1[System.String]: DAVPublicFolderRequest for 1 mailboxes at EXCHANGE ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT) failed.
The exception returned is Microsoft.Exchange.InfoWorker.Common.Availability.PublicFolderRequestProcessingException: The public folder server for the given legacy mailbox was not found.. The request information is
    <Null>.
. Name of the server where exception originated: CAS1. The Availability service could not successfully retrieve Schedule+ free/busy data for one or more legacy Exchange mailboxes.
To find the root cause of this error, increase the diagnostic logging level of the MSExchange Availability service
I have set the log level to expert, but no additional usefull information showed up.  I can't find any legacy mailbox on the exchange 2010 servers.
I didn't receive any complaints about availability information so far. (all clients on OL2010)
Anyone an idea on how to solve this issue?

  • Public folder database guidelines

    hello.  thanks for the time.
I wanted to get some input and thought in regards to moving a public folder environment from exchange 2007 to exchange 2010. we are going to copy the files over using a 3rd party tool.  what i wanted to know is , is it possible to separate the public
folder traffic from Exchange 2010 mailbox traffic. also we have about 600GB of data in public folders. My thought was to have a dedicated public folder server in 2010.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb397221(v=exchg.141).aspx#MailEnabled
this link provides a good intro and says that public folder emails are treated differently.
"Because mail sent to public folders is directed to the public folder database instead of to a mailbox in the mailbox database, Exchange
routes e-mail messages by using a method that's slightly different from the method used to route e-mail messages to a regular mailbox."
Does this mean you can dedicate a hub server for it as well? we use public folders heavily. unfortunately.
thanks for the time and effort.

thanks for the quick response. so just to clarify to add the Exchange 2010 server (in the same Exchange ORG) I need to run:
    \AddReplicaToPFRecursive.ps1 -TopPublicFolder “\” ServerToAdd <new server to replicate to>
What if I wanted to add only parts of the heirachy?  like only the finance folder?  and then move marketing and Technology
later? It's because we have about 500GB in public folder data. I know it's a lot but we are trying to cut out archived data slowly.
Also if we want high availability do I need to provide another 500GB of space on another 2010 server so it can hold a replica copy if the new 2010.  we plan on turning off the 2007 environment and would like to keep public folders in high availabilty.
2007 was good in that sense where it held mailbox clustered server for the public folder database?  2010 does not provide that, correct because of the DAGs?
thanks for the time and effort.

  • How do public folder mailboxes across multiple DAGs work?

I have three Exchange 2013 DAGs in three different sites.  The three DAGs can communicate with each other fine but not necessarily the users in the sites.  Users in Site A can communicate with the Dags in Site B and Site C.  Users in Site
B can only communicate with the DAG in Site A and Site B.  Users in Site C can only communicate with the DAG in Site A and Site C.
I want the site specific public folders to live in a public folder mailbox on their local DAG.  My questions are as follows:
    1. If a user in Site A had rights to every public folder in all public folder mailboxes would all of the Public Folders show in Outlook for them?
    2. What's the best method of migrating from Exchange 2007 PFs to this?  Can I map certain Public Folders to certain PF Mailboxes?
    Thanks.

    1.  They should, yes.
    2.  Yes, you can.  There are migration scripts you download, and after you run the script, you can change the folder-to-mailbox mapping to suit your needs.  The process is pretty intuitive.

  • Mailbox and public folder backup frequency

    I appreciate this is very much organisation specific, but out of interest;
    1) how often do you do full backups of your mailbox databases..
    2) how often do you do incremental backups of your mailbox database(s)..
    3) how often do you do full backups of your public folder database(s)..
    4) how often do you do incremetial backups of your public folder database(s)..

You are right - this is going to depend highly on your organization - and more about how much redundancy is built into your system than anything else.  I have built Exchange solutions for many corporations (5000 to 200,000+ desktops) and have seen everything
from "we will backup daily and delete the backups the next day" (a legal firm who wanted no historic data kept in their system) to "we will backup every day and save two weeks, and save a weekly backup for six months and save a monthly backup for six years"
(can't remember who did that one).  My previous employer (20,000 seats) had Exchange 2010, and have about 100 databases (200GB limit) with three copies of each database (two local for HA, one elsewhere for DR), and did daily backups that were
kept for a week.  My current employer (13,000 seats) has Exchange 2010 with 24 databases (2TB limit) with four database copies (three local for HA, one in another datacenter for DR, and two DAGs that mirror each other, so both datacenters host
active mailboxes), and we have no backups.
Oh, and for both of my recent employers, we have no public folders.  Just another thing to break down that we don't need to worry about.  (-:

  • Move Mailbox database and Public Folder database from VMwar RDM drive to VMware VMFS/VMDK Drive

    Good Afternoon,
So I have 1 DAG with 3 mailbox server (1 physical and 2 Virtual (vmware)).  The Vmware server Mailbox and Public folder databases/logs are currently on RDM drive.  I need to get rid of the RDM drives and use VMFS/Vmdk drives for mailbox and public
folder databases.  I was thinking 3 options:
1- Introduce new VM Members into DAG and simply give these new VMs VMFS/VMDK drives, add servers into DAG and have DAG replicate databases to new server.  I really don't want to do this.
2-On current VM, delete RDM drive along with database, add VMFS/VMDK drive replacement and have the DAG copy database.
3- On current VM, suspend replication, copy database/logs in temp location, delete the RDM drive, create the VMFS/VMDK drive, copy the database and logs to new drive, enable replication.  Do the same for public folder database/logs, but not sure how
to stop/start replications, since its not in DAG?
I'm looking for solution that will take least amount of time.  Option 3 seems best solution, but not sure if there any gotchas.. What are you thought??
Thanks in advance for you help

Take the database offline means stop replications to the the passive mailbox server?
Also, what is procedure to take public folder offline.  We have public folder replicated on all 3 servers.
    Hi cuttabutta,
Yes, take the database offline on the passive server can stop replication from primary server.
you can also take the public folder database offline to stop replication.
In addition, you can refer to the following article to configure public folder replication:

  • Public Folder Mailbox causes database failover Exchange 2013

Hi , we are completing a migration from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013.  All was going swimmingly until we migrated our legacy public folders.  Now every now and again ( once a day generally ) the Exchange Database hosting the Public Folder Mailbox
crashes and fails over to another DAG member.
We are using CU5 and our old 2007 server is offline but not removed from the organization yet.
The error message is as follows :
    Event ID 1013
The mailbox with mailboxguid "xxxxxxxxxxxx" caused crash or resource outage on database (GUID="xxxxxxxxxxx")
    along with :
    Event ID 1001
Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store has encountered an internal logic error. Internal error text is (Unable to apply maintenance GetNonKeyColumnValuesForPrimaryKey-norow, index corruption?) with a call stack of (   at Microsoft.Exchange.Server.Storage.Common.ErrorHelper.AssertRetail(Boolean

The Mailbox Guild matches the Public Folder Mailbox GUID and the Database GUID matches the Database where the mailbox is mounted.
The error seems to be the same as this question :

However I'm after a bit more concrete information as to what actually causes this and if an upgrade to CU6 is required.  This link appears to suggest moving the mailbox will help.  Has anyone else come across this with CU5 and will a mailbox move
    correct it ?

  • Exchange Public Folder Migration - Public Folder Mailbox "LockedforMigration"

    I've recently started a SBS2008 (Exchange 2007 - Latest SP3) migration to Exchange 2013CU6.
Most of the Migration has gone to plan however I've been following a few guides on the Public Folder migration and have seen more errors and time spent than what it is worth.
I've now decided to abandon the Public folder migration as there wasn't really anything of importance in the old 2007 Public Folders, and just setup a new Public Folder Mailbox and PF Folder on the 2013 environment, however... as I started with the migration
the 2013 Server is stuck in "LockedforMigration" mode and will not allow me to create a new Public Folder.
Is there anyway to forcibly 'unstuck/release' the "LockedforMigration = True value.
Or can I just start decommissioning the old 2007 Box and that will force the unlocking of Migration flag
By no means is this the only guide, but here is what I've been following if that will help
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj150486(v=exchg.150).aspx
    Thanks Ian

    Hi Ian,
According to the error message above, please make sure you are running the command as Administrator, and make sure the Administrator is a member of Organization Management Group and Server Management Group. Then try to run command to release "LockedforMigration
    $True".
Since Public Folders on Exchange server 2013 can't be coexisted with legacy Public Folders within an Org, you should delete Public Folder Database from legacy Exchange server 2007 first, then create a new Public Folder Mailbox on Exchange server 2013.
    Thanks

    Hi guys,
I was attempting to create a Public Folder using the Exchange Admin Center but when i tried it came up with the error "Couldn't find the public folder mailbox."
When I went back to check on the Public Folder Mailbox that I had created I noticed that there was no Primary Hierarchy even though Secondary Hierarchy where visible.

  • Public folder migration: Whats wrong with this Folder to mailbox file?

    Hi,
This is my Folder to Mailbox file, migrating public folders from 2010 to 2013:
    "FolderPath","TargetMailbox"
    "\","Hierarchy-PF"
    "\IPM_SUBTREE\Office1","Office1-PF"
    "\IPM_SUBTREE\Office2","Office2-PF"
    "\IPM_SUBTREE\Office3","Office3-PF"
    "\IPM_SUBTREE\Office4","Office4-PF"
All these PF mailboxes live in a dedicated database. But only the mailbox DB containing Hierarchy-PF is growing and my initial migration (New-PublicFolderMigrationRequest / Step 5 in the technet article) is over 50% percent complete. This mailbox is going
to be over 300GB big and I gather the limit is 100GB, I'm sure that can be exceeded without problems, but I had several different reasons splitting the mailboxes and data the way I wanted above.
    Questions:
    1. How do I achieve the end result I want? Do I need to add a \ to the end of the office1-5 ipm_subtree perhaps?
    2. Is there any problem with me stopping the existing migration, deleting that request/mailbox/DB and starting over?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
From your description, it seems that all public folders are migrated to the public folder mailbox "Hierarchy-PF".
Please run the following command to check if these migrated public folders are under the public folder mailbox "Hierarchy-PF".
    Get-PublicFolderStatistics | ft Name, MailboxOwnerId
And please use the following command to check migration report.

  • Exchange 2013 - Public Folder Mailbox and Single Item Recovery

    Hello,
I recently had a request to recover some messages that an ex-employee deleted from the "recover deleted items" folder in their public folder. Since this resides on a public folder mailbox and it does have the option for
"Single Item Recovery" to be enabled on the box (which I enabled not knowing if this really works or not), is there a way I can still recovery these items or do I have to go to a backup to obtain those messages. Since ExFolders does not work that
is not an option. I've seen commands to restore a public folder that was deleted but not items that were deleted directly from a public folder. I checked using MFCMAPI and I do see the dumper root and the public folder dumpster for each folder but it
looks to be only the "deletions" folder and don't see anything similar to a "purges" type folder. Any ideas or am I stuck recovering from backup? Thanks in advance!

So I think you are stuck and will need to restore the EDB to a Recovery Database to restore the items because when the end user purged the items from the "Recover Deleted Items" it removes them from the Recoverable Items/Deletions folder.
    Check out this article
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2013/08/23/recovering-public-folder-information-in-exchange-2013.aspx
I have not played with the recoverable items settings on the 2013 public folder enabled mailbox EDB  but you might try checking out Litigation or In Place Hold to use as a safety mechanism moving forward.  That said this will also increase the
DB size so consider all the options before implementing
Search, Recover, & Extract Mailboxes, Folders, & Email Items from Offline Exchange Mailbox and Public Folder EDB's and Live Exchange Servers or Import/Migrate direct from Offline EDB to Any Production Exchange Server, even cross version i.e. 2003 -->
    2007 --> 2010 --> 2013 with Lucid8's
