Pulseaudio doesn't detect all profiles

Hello archlinux forum
I have problems setting up pulseaudio on my new archlinux installation, it fails to detect the full capabilities of my soundcards.
alsa detects every sound card (there are 3: my audigy sound card, my internal intel hda and my graphics card's hdmi), but pulseaudio only registers the inputs of my audigy and the intel hda, so i have no sound without tinkering

sound works if i manually load the modules for my audigy and my intel sound card and set them as defaults, but this stinks because alsa seems to randomly renumber the cards after reboot
I hope for some helpful input
thanks harlequix

Why do you use alsa and pulseaudio at the same time? You could have only pulseaudio and in, for an example, pavucontrol (gui for pulseaudio settings) you could choos which should be first, and rest mark as the spare. If you want to use pulse and alsa (in my case i have this option because i use mainly alsa and pulseaudio only for skype) you could set index for alsa (you have to crate file in /etc/modprobe.d/ and name it alsa-base.conf) and configure pulse to not grab alsa hadrware by editing /etc/pulse/default.pa. Both of these metods are explained on archwiki in pulseaudio and alsa pages.
BTW - about nvidia hdmi. nvidia sound chip use the same driver, that intel hda does:
lspci -vvvv

but also something that in my opinion is an front end for it:

  • [solved] Pulseaudio doesn't detect sound card after system update

Before a recent system update I had pulseaudio working flawlessly, but after doing a recent system update with pacman -Syu,
pulseaudio no longer sees my sound card and only displays the Dummy audio device.  Among the packages updated that I can
remember off the top of my head are the Linux keneral, udev, kmod, instead of trying to roll back my system I figured I would try
to fix the issue.  The only thing suggested in the Pulseaudio wiki is that a asound.conf directory is overriding the /etc/asound.conf
file which is not the case on my system.
Looking at the output from lsmod I can see where the kernel modules for the sound card is getting loaded
    snd_hda_intel 23375 0
    snd_hda_codec 89160 3 snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_codec_hdmi

    snd_page_alloc 7153 2 snd_pcm,snd_hda_intel
    snd_timer 19544 1 snd_pcm
and looking at the output from the ps command I can see that pulseaudio is getting started
    1190 ? S<l 0:00 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start
    1195 ? S 0:00 \_ /usr/lib/pulse/gconf-helper

Digging into this further aplay -L gives different output based off of whether or not I ran is as my normal user or with sudo/as root.
As a user (which is how pulseaudio is also being ran):
    > aplay -L

as root it does see both my sound cards when I run it with sudo or as root:

  • Installer doesn't detect all instances

I have 2 separate Oracle 8.0.5.1 instances running on a RedHat
6.0 server (2.2.10ac12). During the installation of 8i, the
Universal Installler detects only one of the databases, not both.
Both databases are the result of my own doing. Both instances
were created using essentially the same procedures. When I
installed 8.0.5, I chose custom install, and selected NOT to
    create the sample database.
I'd like the installer to see all the instances so I can perform
the upgrade to all of them (AFTER I'm conviced it'll work). Right
now it sees only my production database, not my test db.
Does anyone know what the installer means by, "The Oracle
Universal Installer detected the databases listed below as
registered on your compute"? How does a database get "registered"
    on a Linux box?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    null

A database is "registered" if there's an entry for it in
    /etc/oratab. Plain and simple.
    Sorry to bother you all.
    null

  • [SOLVED] PulseAudio doesn't detect HDA Intel, only HDA NVidia

    Hi,
I get sound only through my monitor (DP - HDA Nvidia), my external speakers or headphones (HDA Intel) are not recognized by PulseAudio. Both worked in the past, I don't know what broke it.

Here, I dug up an old file I have kicking around.
    Put it in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
Name it anything you want instead of "alsa.conf" as long as the file name ends in ".conf"
    options snd_hda_intel enable=1,0 vid=8086,10de pid=3b56,0bea
    options snd_hda_intel index=0 vid=8086 pid=3b56
The VID and PID numbers are from my hardware.  You will have to replace them from your hardware.  Do:
lspci -nn | grep -i audio
And you will see both your on-board and nVidia audio devices.  Look for [xxxx:xxxx] in the listing.  The first xxxx is your VID - vendor, and the second xxxx is your PID - product/part.
In the "enable=1,0" line put the two VID's first with you on-board being the first VID and then put your two PID's with your on-board being the first PID.  Then in the "index=0" line put your on-board VID and PID.
This will disable the nVidia audio and just enable your on-board audio.  It will explicitly set your on-board audio to be the first audio device on your system.  This will fix a race condition.
Remember, you must put in the appropriate VID and PID's for your specific hardware.
PulseAudio builds on top of ALSA so you are configuring your ALSA devices at a lower level before Pulse starts and when Pulse starts it adds its layer on top of that.
Another assumption is that both audio devices are using snd_hda_intel which is a pretty safe assumption.  Use "lsmod" to confirm this.

    Hello,
It isn't the fw in Network you want o use or look at, that's for something completely different.
My first suspect is the Power Adapter on the LaCie has gone.
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware>Firewire, what is listed there?
    Reset the Firewire bus
If your Firewire or USB isn't recognizing any device.  A solution which has worked for some whose hard drive became invisible in 10.4 was simply to follow these four steps to reset the Firewire/USB bus:
    1. Shut the machine down.
    2. UNPLUG the power lead to the computer and any firewire/USB drive or devices.
    3. leave it for 10 minutes.
    4. Connect back up and reboot.

    Good Morning Denise -
Sorry to hear you are having issues connecting to your Wi-Fi network.  I'll include a few more things that you can try to troubleshoot this below.  The first thing that I'm wondering is if you cannot connect to your Wi-Fi at home -- are you able to connect to a different Wi-Fi network (at work, a local coffee shop, etc.)?  That would be one of the first things to try.
Turning the modem and router in your house of and then on is also a common step as it "reinitializes" everything.  Hopefully, one of the steps below will help you with this.
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won’t connect to a Wi-Fi network - Apple Support

    Restart.
For more help, try restarting your device, router, or cable/DSL modem. After each step, check to see if you fixed the issue.
      • Restart your iOS device.
      • Unplug your router and plug it back in.
      • Unplug your cable or DSL modem and plug it back in.
    Still can’t connect?
Reset your Network Settings. Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you’ve used before.
    Get more help
Try connecting to a Wi-Fi network in a different location. If your device can connect, you’ll need to get help with your Wi-Fi network. If it can’t connect to any Wi-Fi networks, contact Apple.

  • My router RV180 doesn't detect my dsl gateway

I just bougth a RV router but when i logon to the interface to configure it the router doesn't detect internet connection, i connected the ethernet cable port 1 from dsl to the WAN port at the RV180, but doesn't detetct the gateway, need i a cross cable? Because i can logon to the configuration wizard but it seems the router cannot detect the dsl internet connection.

    Hello,
Usually a DSL connection will require that the modem be put into bridged mode, and then our device is configured as PPPoE.  To configure the modem you would need to speak with the ISP.  Some of them call this IP passthrough, one-to-one NAT, or just bridged mode.  You may have to ask for a supervisor before they will do this for you.
You will also need to get your PPPoE credentials from your provider.  Then you log into the admin page on the RV180, go to Networking >> WAN (Internet) >> PPPoE Profiles.  Click on Add and enter the information from the provider.  Then switch to the IPv4 WAN (Internet) page and change the connection type to PPPoE and select the profile you just created from the drop down menu.
While you are there you may also want to change your MTU from default to 1472, most DSL connections require this smaller MTU size to work properly.
If you do have any issues with that your new router does come with 1 year of technical support, so you can give us a call and we can help get you setup as well.

Please note you would still need to speak with the provider first to get the modem bridged and obtain the PPPoE credentials.
    Hope that helps.

  • ACPI doesn't detect closed lid until other acpi event

Basically I have the same problem as described in this thread:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=121224
No solution is posted so I bring this up again.
As said when I close the lid, acpi doesn't detect it not in the acpi.log neither with acpi_listen. When I insert the battery, acpi immediately detects the closed lid and my laptop goes in suspend as it's supposed to.
This happens with a WM + acpi + laptop-mode-tools, in Xfce and in Gnome. KDE however works fine.
The logs when I close the lid and then insert the battery:
    acpi.log
Jan 21 20:51:31 localhost acpid: client 1254[0:1000] has disconnected
Jan 21 20:51:31 localhost acpid: client connected from 1254[0:1000]
Jan 21 20:51:31 localhost acpid: 1 client rule loaded

I can tell with the lid closed because of which lights are on.
Anyway, I don't see anything interesting at all in the logs. This is so weird.
EDIT: I'm thinking that it might be conflicting kernel modules. For example I have phc-intel and acpi-cpufreq. Plus I'm using the CK kernel. So when I get home today, I'll first try removing phc-intel, then acpi-cpufreq, then I'll try stock kernel.

  • Windows 7 doesn't detect my Canon MX850

    Hi all,
I have a Canon MX850 printer connected to the network. Unlike other reports in this forum, Windows 7 doesn't detect my printer at all.
I can ping the printer and access it's network configuration page so network connectivit is not the issue (I even disabled the windows firewall, just in case).
Any clues where to go next?
    Thanks,
    S.

    Hi,
Can the printer work fine on other machine on the network?
At this stage, you can refer to the following steps for a test.
    1. Plug the printer to the Windows 7 machine directly and install the proper driver. For your reference, I have enclosed the latest driver for Windows 7 below:
    Canon MX850 driver
Please Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information.
Is the printer working fine on the Windows 7 machine? If not, please let me know. Otherwise, you can put the printer back and connect it via network again.
    2. If the printer still cannot be detected via network, I suggest you remove the original printer on the computer and recreate a new network printer icon.

  • Nvidia 195.36.31-1 doesn't detect horizontal refresh rate correctly

With both the nvidia driver 195.36.15 that was in the main repositories before the last update, and the nvidia-beta driver 256.35-1from aur my monitor's horizontal refresh rate is detected correctly(129.5khz with a 120hz vertical refresh rate).  However, the nvidia driver currently in the repositories 195.36.31-1 doesn't detect it correctly and forces a horizontal refresh rate of about 185khz.  This causes horizontal white lines to be seen all along the screen.
I'm now happily using the beta driver from aur, but I can try to pinpoint the problem if someone can point me in the right direction.
    thanks.

this is not a bug. this is a nvidia workaround so that xrandr is able to handle correctly multihead refresh rates. see the nvidia readme for details, and don't worry, the refresh rate is correct, else you would see garbage.

Ovi suite doesn't detect it. I tried 'add new device' it still didnt find it.

Then go to device manager ( Right Click My Computer-Manage) then ports- Uninstall all the ports which is by name nokia (
there might be multiple entries, but remove them), but please dont remove any other from there which might lead to
    malfunction.
    - go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\OviInstallerCache and remove all the sub folders inside that.
For windows vista and windows 7 it will be C:/Program Data/OviInstallerCache
    - Restart Computer
    - Download and install ovi suite
    - Restart computer
    - Then connnect the device and wait till all the drivers are downloaded.
    - Then launch Ovi Suite connect the device.
This has solved the issue in many cases.
    Hopefully this works.

  • Modem doesn't detect incoming calls

    Hi everybody,
I use an apple external usb modem for fax reception.
The modem detects the incoming call if coming from an internal call, but doesn't detect it if its an external call.
    The ring patterns are different:
internal call: DRON 100(1/100sec) DROFF 100
    external call:DRON 40 DROFF 100
It seems that the 0.4 sec DRON is not enough to trigger the ring.
Any idea on how to setup the modem to detect this type of ring?
    thank you

I just got the phone on Black Friday and I was receiving incoming calls why talking which displayed the other caller name but now It just comes up multiple calls. I call Sprint and all my features are working. I turned off the phone and turned it back on and nothing has reset this problem. I even went to the Sprint store and they talked about updates but they are all current, they could not help me. What next.
