Put comp to SLEEP-suddenly after 30 seconds the FANS WENT SUPER LOUD! HELP
Hi guys i put my computer to sleep today, and then afterl ike 30 secs my compuer just starting making the loudest fan noise, as iff the computer was hot, it was almost liek running the hardware test but not as loud, So i did just that ran the test and everythign passed on the extended test. Ive read some things on this, but no conclusions or reasons why it does this, just some odd anomalies.. should i be worried?
my G5 locked up yesterday. I did a hard shutdown. When I restarted the system start, but it would not go through the boot up process. then the fan took off. We had a similar problem with a couple of G5s when they were first installed. Our tech swapped out the RAM and it was resolved. I have had my G5 for almost 3 years and this is the first major problem I have had with it.

Have you tried resetting your iPhone, press and hold the sleep/wake button and the home button for 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo appears, ignoring the red slider, then turn back on. You won't lose any data doing this.

Dear all, Since a week ago I observe that when I press the button for my macbook air to start a nap, first the screen turns to black (although I can see it is stil on) and I can see the arrow (pointer). Only after 15 seconds the arrow and the screen really shut down. It did not occur before, as a matter of fact it was instantaneous. What could be the problem?
Note the time in your Mac's menu bar or some other accurate timepiece. Then, press the button to put the MBA to sleep. Wait until the cursor disappears and for all indications that the Mac appears to be asleep.
Then, wake the Mac the way you normally wake it.
Then, find the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder and looks like this
You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
Open Console.
If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu.
Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's sleep problem. To do that type the words sleep cause in the Filter field at the upper left of the Console window:
That will cause all log entries to be hidden, except for the entries containing those words. The last entry in the list will correspond to the last time you woke the Mac. It will have a time stamp in the form hh:mm:ss later than the time you noted in the Mac's menu bar prior to putting it to sleep.
Make note of that exact time in hours, minutes, and seconds.
Next: Clear the filter field by clicking the x in the above screenshot. It should then look like this:
All previously displayed log entries will reappear.
Next: Find the log entry that corresponds exactly to the time you noted in hours, minutes, and seconds containing the words "previous sleep cause". You may have to scroll up or down a considerable distance. When you find that line, select it and drag your cursor up and prior to the entry corresponding to the approximate time you noted before putting the Mac to sleep. This will result in a selection of perhaps 50 to 100 lines or so.
One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the fifteen second delay.
Copy and paste those log entries in a reply.
Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered. -
i am having an MacBook Pro 13inch , having an Startup Problem , the time i press the power button after few seconds the apple symbol appears with a loading sign below it and wont go further ahead of it . My data is all in the hard drive .. . I even tried the Internet recovery but no use !!!! but still no respons and the recovery and macintosh hd is now lock! but earlier only the recovery is lock and after both of them is lock. i can reinstall,... and i didnt try to back up any data bec i dont know how? so please help me to resolve my prroblem.?

Sorry, possibly you need a new hard drive or try reformating. First
you can try something like http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/ it has been known to repair disk that DiskUtility could not. YMMV and they don't give it away.
If Disk Warrior can not repair then you need to Reformate the drive. Make sure you have a back-up in place no matter what.

My macbook pro is making strange fan related noises. Sounds as if something is stuck in the fan. First time this has happened since I got my computer. Every time I put it to sleep I wouldn't hear the sound anymore. Any suggestions?

Probably is. They get dusty. Shut down your computer and clean it out with a vacuum (don't blow dust back inside). -
I have an old imac G5 (non Intel) The screen went blank but the fan turns very loudly. I cannot reboot the computer. whenever I start it I get power and black screen and the fan comes on loudly after about 30 secs. I have tried rebooting pressing varius keys, but no luck. I once got the flashing question mark, but I can't get that either. I'd like to reboot from the disc, but I cannot insert a disc. Any help out there??
If zapping the PRAM does not get it working, it's time for a new iMac. Repairs will not be worth the cost. Put it towards a new iMac.

Attempting to download IOS6 onto iPad2. Two minutes after download began, the screen went black. Over two Hours since download began and I still cannot get the device to power back on. Battery was 90% when download began. Is there a way to force the power on?
worked for me, then general software update showed "ios 7.0.4" is up to date. awful long and frightening update but all well that ends well. this Sleep/wake AND Home worked to shut off.

The following is how to do a proper reset of an iDevice:
Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)
1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally. -

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit") -

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

[SOLVED] Automatically put HDD to sleep mode after start
Hi everyone.
I use a secondary HDD for backups. It's plugged to my computer permanently but actually it is needed for a few seconds per day. A backup script automatically shuts it down after backing up with `hdparm -Y` to save a power and reduce a noise. And I want to shut down an HDD also every time after the system is started.
I tryed two ways to implement this.
1. Udev rule that runs `hdparm -Y` for the device identified by ID_SERIAL_SHORT attribute.
2. Following systemd service:

Both methods actually run hdparm, but state of the HDD is active after login (I check it with hdparm -C). It looks like something in systemd "touches" the hard drive and wakes it up back. And I can't find what may access the secondary HDD after udev rules are processed.
What is correct way to solve the issue?

Last edited by dimich (2013-05-03 02:32:38)Well, I think you would need to determine everything that might be polling your drives during the boot process, which might be a pretty big task. Then use that information to determine either when udev should run that command, and use the lexicographically ordered rules to try finding just the right spot (and even then it might just come down to a race). Or you can use the gathered info to try and make systemd's service dependencies do the work for you. Either way, I would honestly rather just use a timer.

Sounds like a #1 SMC or #2 PRAM reset is in order.
