Question on installing Multiple Directory Servers

Hello All,
I seem to be having a problem installing multiple directory servers, and I was hoping that somebody could help me. Here is what I am trying to do:
I install DS 2005Q4 on HostA. I have it be the User/Group and Configuration Server. This install goes ok and I can use the administration server and console to manage the servers.
I then go to HostB and install DS 2005Q4 and tell it to use the configuration server on HOSTA. I use the the passwords for Admin and Directory Manager and tell it to store User/Group information. I also install the admistration server.
The problem is when I go to manage this second ldap server throught either administration server it tells me that I have insufficient rights. That is if I click on the configuration tab and try and look at anything.
The second adminsitration server can see and manage the DS on HOSTA fine, but not the DS on HostB. The same thing goes for the administration server on HostA. It can manage the DS on HostA but not the DS on HostB. It keeps saying insufficient rights.
The end goal is to setup these DS in multimaster replication and have the o=netscaperoot replicated to HostB.
I am sure I must be doing something stupid, but I have banged my head on the wall all week and I thought I would see if somebody had any suggestions.
The hardware is a pair of v210's with 4GB of memory and I am running Solaris 10 01/06 fully patched.
Thanks for any help,
Gary

just for completness, when you have installed the consumer, you have manually started the admin server up haven't you??? if not, do so!
also ensure that the host file holds the correct IP and host/host domain name.
ensure you can contact the config server from your consumer etc.
ensure you can connect to the consumer from the config server etc.
if using the GUI from a machine other than the config server, ie pc based. ensure connectivity and host look up is acheivable from the PC.
HTH

  • How to bind a ldapclient to multiple directory servers

Currently i have 2 directory servers that have replication agreements (master, master). How do i bind a client to both servers in case one goes down?
    Ex.

    Doesn't seem to work....
    cat ldap_client_file
    # Do not edit this file manually; your changes will be lost. Please use ldapclient (1M) instead.

That should work. Did you try space-separated list instead of comma?

  • Installing multiple Application Servers using setup

    Hi there,
I successfully installed SunONE application Server on my machine. I wish to install a completely new Application Server in a different directory, however using the setup GUI - when I get to the "Select Components" screen, all options are greyed out and I cannot continue.
I have already created a new domain in the original install and deleted the default "domain1" domain, however it seems that there can only be one installation of Appserver 7.0 on a machine.
    Is this correct?
If not, how do I install this a second time?
    Regards
    Brian.

With the full version of the product (non evaluation copy) that installs as root on your unix environment, you can only have one install image. That is not a problem it is designed that way.
You can have as many admin domains as you wish on a server. With the PE version, you can only have one instance per domain. With the SE version this restriction is lifted. You can put those domains anywhere you want and have them owned by any user (as long as asadmin create-domain is run as root)
For assistance you and get help from asadmin:
    # ./asadmin help create-domain
    User Commands create-domain(1)
    NAME
create-domain - creates a domain with the given
    name
    SYNOPSIS
    create-domain [--path domain_path ] [--sysuser
    sys_user ] [--passwordfile filename ] --adminport
    port_number adminuser admin adminpassword password
    domain_name
    DESCRIPTION
Use the create-domain command to create a domain
with the specified administration port number,
administration user, administration password, and domain name.
By creating a domain, an administration server is
created in a directory named as the domain name. This
command can be run locally only.
    OPTIONS
--path directory path where the domain should be
created. If specified, path must be accessible in the
filesystem. If not specified, the domain is created under
    $AS_DOMAINS_PATH directory.
--sysuser owner of the domain directory. Must be
a valid user on the system (Solaris only). The
domain is created under the specified system username.
If not specified, the current username is used.
    --passwordfile file containing passwords
appropriate for the command (e.g., administrative instance).
--adminport port of the administrative instance.
The port number cannot be currently active.
--adminuser user name assoicated with the administrative instance.
--adminpassword password associated with the administrative name.
    OPERANDS
domain_name name of the domain. Must be a unique name.
    EXAMPLES
    Using create-domain
    asadmin> create-domain --path /u/domain1/domain_root
    sysuser user1 adminuser admin --adminpassword
    adminadmin --adminport 6868 domain1
    created domain domain1 successfully
Where: the domain1 domain is created in the domain_root
    directory.

  • Is it possible to install multiple Password Export Servers (PES) in the source domain?

I'm unable to find definitive information that says it is not allowable or feasible to install multiple PES servers in the domain.  The only hit I have is "Can
PES (for password migration) be installed on more than one DC on source domain?.
I'm unsure if the generated key is good for only establishing a single PES connection, or if it can be used multiple times, or if by generating a new one for the same domain, does it deactivate the other one.
The reason I ask is that we have a distributed forest and will be migrating users from many different locations.  We've found that the replication delays between the DCs in the source location can take quite a while to reach the site where the PES server
is running.  We can create replication connectors, but I'd also like to see if simply adding another PES service to the local DC is possible.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your posting.
According to this article, the PES service should run on a domain controller in the  source domain:

  • Load Balancing Directory Servers with Access Manager - Simple questions

    Hi.
We are in the process of configuring 2 Access Manager instances (servers) accessing the same logical LDAP repository (comprising physically of two Directory Servers working together with Multi-Master Replication configured and tested) For doing this, we are following guide number 819-6258.
The guide uses BigIP load balancer for load balancing the directory servers. However, we intend to use Directory Proxy Server. Since we faced some (unresolved) issues last time that we used DPS, there are some simple questions that I would be very grateful to have answers to:
    1. The guide, in section 3.2.10 (To configure Access Manager 1 with the Directory Server load balancer), talks about making changes at 4 places, and replacing the existing entry (hostname and port) with the load balancer's hostname and port (assuming that the load balancer has already been configured). It says that changes need not be made on Access Manager 2 since the LDAPs are in replication, and hence changes will be replicated at all places. However, the guide also states that changes have to be made in two files, namely AMConfig.properties, and the serverconfig.xml file. But these changes will not be reflected on Access Manager 2, since these files are local on each machine.
Question 1. Do changes have to be made in AMConfig.properties and serverconfig.xml files on the other machine hosting Access Manager 2?
Question 2: What is the purpose of putting these values here? Specifically, what is achieved by specifying the Directory server host and port in AMConfig.properties, as well as in serverconfig.xml?
Question 3. In the HTTP console, there is the option of specifying multiple primary LDAP servers, as well as multiple secondary LDAP servers. What is the purpose of these? Are secondary servers attempted when none of the list in the primary list are accessible? Also, if there are multiple entries in the primary server list, are they accessed in a round robin fashion (hereby providing rudimentary load balancing), or are other servers accessed only when the one mentioned first is not reachable etc.?
    2. Since I do not have a load balancer setup yet, I tried the following deviation to the above, which, according to me, should have worked. If viewed in the HTTP console, LDAP / Membership / MSISDN and Policy configuration all pointed to the DS on host 1. When I changed all these to point to the directory server on host 2 (and made AMConfig.properties and serverconfig.xml on host 1 point to DS of host 2 as well), things should have worked fine, but apparently Access manager 1 could not be started. Error from Webserver:

In effect, AM on 1 did not start. On rolling back the changes, things again worked like previously.
Will be really grateful for any help / insight / experience on dealing with the above.
    Thanks!

Update to the above, incase anyone is reading:
We setup a similar setup in Windows, and it worked. Here is a detailed account of what was done:
    1. Host 1: Start installer, install automatically, chose Directory server, Directory Administration server, Directory Proxy server, Web server, Access Manager.
All installed, and worked fine. (AMConfig.properties, serverconfig.xml, and the info in LDAP service, all pointed to HOST1:389)
    2. Host 2: Start installer, install automatically, chose Directory server, Directory Administration server, Directory Proxy server, Web server, Access Manager.
All installed, and worked fine. (AMConfig.properties, serverconfig.xml, and the info in LDAP service, all pointed to HOST2:389)
    3. Host 1: Started replication. Set to Master
    4. Host 2: Started replication. Set to Master
    5. Host 1: Setup replication agreement to Host 2
    6. Host 2: Setup replication agreement to Host 1
    7. Initiated the remote replica from Host 1 ----> Host 2
Note that since default installation uses abc.....xyz as the encryption key, setting this to same was not an issue.
    9. Started webserver for Host 1 and logged into AM as amadmin.
    10. Added Host 2 FQDN in DNS Aliases / Realms
    11. Added http://HOST2_FQDN:80 in the Platform server (instance) list.
    12. Started Host 2 webserver. Logged in AM on Host 2, things worked fine.
At this stage, note the following:
    a) Host 1:
    AMConfig.properties file has
    com.iplanet.am.directory.host=host1_FQDN
    and
    com.iplanet.am.directory.port=389
    serverconfig.xml has:
    <Server name="Server1" host="host1_FQDN" port="389" type="SIMPLE" />
    b) Host 2:
    AMConfig.properties file has
    com.iplanet.am.directory.host=host2_FQDN
    and
    com.iplanet.am.directory.port=389
    serverconfig.xml has:
    <Server name="Server1" host="host2_FQDN" port="389" type="SIMPLE" />
    c) If one logs into AM, and checks LDAP servers for LDAP / Policy Configuration / Membership etc services, they all contain Host2_FQDN:389 (which makes sense, since replica 2 was initialized from 1)
    Returning back to the configuations:
    13. On Host 1, login into the Admin server console of the Directory server. Navigate to the DPS, and confgure the following:
    a) Network Group
    b) LDAP servers
    c) Load Balancing
    d) Change Group
    e) Action on-bind
    f) Allow all actions (permit modification / deletion etc.).
    g) any other configuations required - Am willing to give detailed steps if someone needs them to help me / themselves! :)
So now, we have DPS configured and running on Host1:489, and distributing load to DS1 and DS2 on a 50:50 basis.
    14. Now, log into AM on Host 1, and instead of Host1_fqdn:389 (for DS) in the following places, specify Host1_fqdn:489 (for the DPS)--
    LDAP Authentication
    MSISDN server
    Membership Service
    Policy configuation.
Verified that this propagated to the Policy Configuration service and the LDAP authentication service that are already registered with the default organization.
    15. Log out of AM. Following the documentation, modify directory.host and directory.port in AMConfig.properties to point to Host 1_FQDN and 489 respectively. Make this change in AMConfig.properties of both Host 1 as well as 2.
    16. Edit serverconfig.xml on both hosts, and instead of they pointing to their local directory servers, point both to host1_FQDN:489
    17. When you start the webserver, it will refuse to start. Will spew errors such as:

    Success!
The server https-host1_FQDN has started up.
The server infact, didn't start up (nothing even listening on 58080).
However, if AMConfig.properties is left as it originally was, and only serverconfig.xml files were changed as mentioned above, web servers started fine, and things worked all okay. (Alright, except for some glitches when viewed in /amconsole. If /amserver/console is accessed, all is good. Can this mean that all is still not well? I am not sure).
So far so good. Now comes the sad part. When the same is done on Solaris 9, things dont work. You continue to get the above error, OR the following error, and the web server will refuse to start:
Differences in Solaris and Windows are as follows:
    1. Windows hosts have 1 IP and hostname. Solaris hosts have 3 IPs and hostnames (for DS, DPS, and webserver).
No other difference from an architectural perspective.
Any help / insight on why the above is not working (and why the hell does the documentation seem so sketchy / insecure / incorrect).
    Thanks a bunch!

  • Multiple Database Servers Question

    Hi,
Please forgive this ignorant question, but can someone tell
me how one would go about using multiple database servers?
Just as there comes a time where one would need more than
one web server and would need to use a load balancing
solution, what happens when one would need more than one
    Database Server?
How does one go about implementing that solution?
Is there some way to have two database servers carrying the
same information with some kind of load balancing solution
in front of it(?) or does one place some tables on one
    Database
server, and other tables on the other database server?
(I have no clue as to how things would work.)
    Thanks in advance,
    Joe

Microsoft SQL allows for clustering of SQL databases, so for
instance two servers connected to a fileshare and a virtual address
shared across the two physical boxes. Database connections are made
to the virtual addres which will then be handled by the active
node. Becuase a database is ultimately a file(s) on a disk it can
only be attached to one node at a time so you end up with an
    active/inactive cluster.

  • 7.10 installation server, load balancing and multiple installation servers

    Hi
In the 7.10 GUI installation server, there is no Load balancing option anamore, also there seems to be no option to easily clone the installation server from within the nwsapsetupadmin.exe program.
If having MANY users at one location, and needing more than one installation server to accomodate the frontend installations, do you need to do this "manually" now ? grouping users and and the logon script directing different user groups to different sapgui installation servers ?
what about creating multiple installation servers easily, is it possible to simply copy the installation server directory (c:\sapinst f.ex.) to another file server, share the directory and configure the DS and IS services (if needed) ??
will configured packages and "on end install" scripts and such be copied too to the new installation server ?
I need to easily create installation servers in 15 countries, this is the reason for my question...

    Hi Kim Sonny,
    hope you're doing fine
    Regarding your question:
The "Load Balancing" was more a fail-over service and wasn't intended to use for several locations like in your case.
So the easiest way to do this is to setup one installation server and copy the files to the other servers. On the new Installation servers you only have to setup the service again and that's it.
    Cheers,
    Martin

  • How to use one certificate for two directory servers?

    Hi,
running Sun DSEE 6.3.1 on two servers, server 1 has name ds1.example.com, server 2 has name ds2.example.com. There is a round robin DNS record ds.example.com, which alternates between:
    ds1.example.com
    ds2.example.com
    and
    ds2.example.com
    ds1.example.com
An LDAP client connects to one of the servers over SSL using the name ds.example.com. We want to generate a certificate using the name ds.example.com and use it on both directory servers.
If we generate a CSR using DSCC on server 1 and get back a signed certificate, the certificate can be installed correctly on server 1. However, if we use the same signed certificate on server 2 it fails with error:
Unable to find private key for this certificate.
    Failed to add the certificate.
Error executing the operation. The error code is 11.
What is the correct way to generate one CSR, have it signed by a CA and then implement this signed certificate on multiple servers?
    /rolf

From one Directory Server (ds1) generate CSR with the name ds.example.com in the request. Once you get the signed cert import it into the same server you generated CSR with. Then from ds1.example.com :
    scp -p <slapd install/instance path>/alias/* <account>@ds2.example.com:<slapd install/instance path>/alias/
to copy the contents of the alias path to the same location on the other Directory Server. Make sure file permissions are the same.

  • Installing multiple copies of the SAME service on a BOX

This is a "Best Practice" question for BOE-XI (3.x).
I have dug through the 3.1 DEPLOYMENT training, Admin and Pattern documents, but none of them clearly discuss anything around installing multiple copies of the SAME service (eg. CMS, ReportJob) on the same physical server if it has more that 1 CPU.
The documents detail the "per CPU" limits of a service, but don't detail if we should install multiple services to take advantage of the multiple CPUs available on a specific Physical Server.
For example - the Crystal Report Job Server can support five (5) simultaneous report jobs per CPU by default.
If we have a 2 CPU machine, do we run one (1) CRJS service - but increase the "Maximum Jobs Allowed" setting to Ten (10), or do we install two (2) CRJS services each with a default limit of Five (5)...?
Does this rule apply to all services including the One (1) CPU for One-Hundred (100) simultaneous requests sizing-limit on the CMS..? That doesn't appear to be a setting we can control within the CMC.
Can you run more than one CMS service on a specific Physical Server...?
Thanks in advance for the advice.

I personally have run 20 jobs per Crystal Job server and most were dual processor dual core.  I had over 1000 jobs a night, but not all at 1am...although most were within 2 hours of the same time.
I was able to get through them.  However, I had 4 Crystal Job servers.  Its all about your hardware being taxed.
I broke off my CMS away from the processing tier.  So I could have multiple Crystal Job servers.
We had 3 processing tier servers all doing Crystal Jobs and Webi jobs.  I had 60 running at one time for Crystal. 20 per job server.
i could have added the Crystal job servers to the same server, but the hardware was getting busy.
I would have at least 2 CMS's as they support 500 concurrent users (Sessions?) each.
This helped us - and we had over 8k reports in our repository.  We were getting bound by memory constraints.
Once you get to 64 bit OS and App, (BO XI 4.0 sometime in 2010) it will help with this problem.
The only other way in the 32 bit environment is to add servers, even VM's if you have to as long as they are different hosts, but that adds expensive BOE CPU licenses - the big caveat to that.
That's how we solved the problem...

  • Installing all MDM servers on same physical host/server

    Dear All
For production MDM environment we have installed all mdm servers- MDIS, MDSS, MDS and MDLS on the same physical server.
Will this have any impact on the performance. We are using MDM 7.1 and on HP Unix.
Another question is- If we have multiple repositories Vs single repository with multiple main tables( Vendor, Customer and Materials) why the choice should have performance impacts on the server level.
    Thanks-Ravi

    Ravi,
I don't mean to muddy the waters here, but performance tuning and system sizing is a slightly more complex exercise than simply determining how many records your repository will contain and how many fields it will have.  There are many, many considerations that need to be taken into account.
For example. the MDM server's performance can be dramatically improved or worsened depending on things like sort indices, accelerator files, data types and fill rates, validation logic, remote key generation, number of users, number of Java connections, web service connections, etc.  The list goes on and on, and that's not even taking into consideration the hardware (multi-processor, RAM, the physical disk configuration, etc.)
With regards to the Import Server and Syndication Server you have to take into account things like map complexity: are you doing free-form searching to filter records in maps?  Are your maps designed for main tables, qualified lookup tables, or reference data?  How often do imports / syndications occur?  What keys are you matching on when importing?  Do you plan on importing by chunks?  What is the import volume, etc?
Once again, I don't want to scare you, but I also wanted to bring up a few topics for you to think about.  There is a reason why SAP and other vendors charge a fee for doing system sizing.
These are just a few small examples, but the list goes on and on.  I hope this helps to get you thinking in the right direction when designing your architecture and system landscape.  Good luck!

  • NT startup parmaters for multiple weblogic servers started as a service

I have the need to start multiple weblogic servers, using NT services.
I have created a second folder with a properties file listening on another
    port.
I am using the following startup parameter
    -J-Dweblogic.system.name=Test
My question, this works when I type the startup parameter, is their anyway
    to have this automatically entered
    on server startup.
Is their a registry setting to make this permanent
    Thanks

    The answer is...
    - Use a product to turn applications into an NT Service (e.g.
    ServiceMill)
    - Directly run the Weblogic Server Java class via that application
--> As many WLs on one machine as you like.
Send mail if you need specific details.
    Best regards

I wish that was the case.
The problem is, while you enter the startup parameter once, it only
is good for that startup of the weblogic server,
The next time the server reboots and the services start, unless you
    re-enter the startup parameter -J-Dweblogic.system.name=Foldername
The weblogic server starts using the wrong properties file.
Is their anyway using NT services to have the correct instance of WL
    to start everytime.
I have checked this newsgroup and this question has been posted
before, but so far no one seems to have the answer.
I know in a production eniviorment someone must be running more that
one instance of a WL server as a service, Hopefully their is an
answer on how this is done.
    Thank you

  • Installing multiple packages with pkgadd...

    hi there,
sorry about this silly question but I am having some problem to install multiple packages with pkgadd. Basically I have packages with this form "apache-2.4.3-sol10-sparc-local" and not with pkg extension. So, checking the man page pkgadd -d /packages/dire/ all suppose to work, but it doesn't.
I am sure I am doing a very simple error but couldn't figure out.
It will be appreciated if someone help.
    Cheers!

    Hi.
pkgadd -d - used for install many packeges from one location.
    location may be:
    1. Directory
    2. Separete file.
You have many files that contetns packages. You can't do it with one commands, or you should previos converst all packages to one file ( man pkgtrans).
    You should use command:
    pkgadd -d <path>/apache-2.4.3-sol10-sparc-local all
    pkgadd -d <path>/gmp-4.2.1-sol10-sparc-local all
    pkgadd -d <path>/libtool-2.4.2-sol10-sparc-local all

  • SIU "Apply system configuration settings" and Connect computers to directory servers

    Good morning/Afternoon/Evening everyone.
I've currently been studying/researching imaging with OSX 10.9 server, using the SIU.  As I'm going through it, one option that is appealing to me, is the "COnnect computers to directory servers:" option under the Apply System configuration settings workflow action.
The issue is that when click on the + to add a server, it only comes up with Localhost (127.0.0.1) and won't give me the option to point to my OD server for binding.  Is there a way to change this, or some other option I am missing?
Also, I'm at a loss to find any setting in Profile manager that will enable/turn on "Remote management" for ARD and SSH.

Thank you for that link, it is insightful.  So let me throw this into the mix:
When it comes to ARD, we have to have a local user on the local machine, in order to login, correct? It won't allow us to have OD authenticated admins/users login to the client machine. Is that correct?
If that is the scenario, then how are we to lock down a situation where we are imaging multiple macs and have the potential to have admins changing or leaving, and a need to reset local machine admin credentials. Obviously we aren't going to do this individually per machine. This would also need to be done via scripting (or ARD CLI to our enterprise), but then each image needs to be updated or all new machines need to be touched after image/install.
Am I thinking of this the correct way?
Also, is it possible to create an image that has no local user at all, or is that just nonsense?

  • DMS need to send the same document to multiple content servers

    Dear Experts,
We are implemeting DMS with three content servers(A,B,C locations). We have requirement that need document must save on 3 content servers and user can see document from any one of them.
As per understanding while create document ECC system ask which content server need to save,We can select one of content servers.
Kindly give me answers for below questions
    - Is there any posibility to select multiple content servers which creating document?
    - Is there any posiblity to shared repository for 3 servers?
    Please advice on the requirement.
    Thanks in advace.
    Regards,
    Santhosh.

    Dear Santhosh...
for this kind of scenario SAP Provide
    Content Servers and Cache Servers
Any number of content servers can be installed in different locations. The contents are transferred directly between the client and content server. A cache is used to store copies of documents when they are accessed for the first time. As a result, the documents can be accessed again more quickly, since the contents are taken directly from the cache. Caching, however, must not be confused with replication.
With caching, the original documents are stored in one location, namely on the content server. The copies in the cache can be replaced with newer content at any time.

  • Is it possible to deploy SharePoint or its Service Applications on: multiple DB-Servers and multiple SQL Instances?

    Hello Forum,
We have a SharePoint 2013 farm (Enterprise edition) that uses one single SQL Server 2012 (Standard edition). That statement means: All my SharePoint DBs e.g. (Config, Admin, Content, and Service Apps) DBs are hosted and running onto one single instance e.g.
    Server1\SQLInstance1.
We have some new requirements to install and configure BI tools such as: PerformancePoint services and PowerPivot. BI tools require either SQL Server 2012 Enterprise or BI editions, and we do NOT want to upgrade our current SQL Server1\SQLInstance1
Instead, We have other separate SQL Server instance which is enterprise edition let's name it (ServerX\InstanceX) that is running standalone, and we are thinking or using it, and my 2 questions are:
    1) Can we use this other separate
SQL Server instance which is enterprise edition to host the create and hosts the DBs of PerformancePoint services and PowerPivot ?
    2) My second question is the same: Can I create PerformancePoint services application in my SharePoint farm, But in the Database Server field, I fill up
the details of the other DB server ServerX\InstanceX  which is the one that is SQL
enterprise edition ? Will this work ?
Any official Microsoft resources/links tell that it is possible to deploy SharePoint or its service applications on multiple DB-Servers and multiple SQL Instances?

    Thank you Alex and Anil,
What are the ramifications of that?
I mean, Assuming that I have created such a farm where most of SarePoint DBs in Standard SQL instance while the PerformancePoint service application and others e.g. PowerPivot and reporting service are deployed and configured onto other Enterprise SQL instance.
Are there any recommendations or concerns that you would like to draw my attention to ?
