Question on original work and actual work

Hey folks,
Sometimes the simplest things in Project befuddle me. I'm working in Project 2010 Standard. I have a whole bunch of "Fixed Work" tasks. This is a pretty simple project, and I haven't done baselines or anything like that.
So let's say I have a task, "Build X" that is was originally estimated as 4 hours of work. That is entered into the Work column.
During the project, Build X gets completed, and I learn that it only took 2 hours of work. I want to enter this into Project so that we know that:
Task "Build X" is 100% complete
The actual work was only 2 hrs
The original estimate was for 4 hrs
However, if I enter 100% into either % complete or % work complete, Project changes the Actual Work to 4 hrs, which is wrong. If I set the Actual Work to 2 hours, Project changes % complete or % work complete to 50%, which is also wrong.
Is there anything I can do here that doesn't involve baselines?

What have you got against setting a baseline? A baseline captures your original plan. The schedule will be dynamic and as things happen Project updates that dynamic plan to reflect what really happened. So no, there is no way to do what you want without
a baseline, except perhaps of capturing the original work value in an extra field (e.g. Text1), but there's no point in doing that.
Set a baseline. That will capture "Build X" as being originally planned at 4 hours work. When you later find out that it only took 2 hours, you enter that into the Actual Work field and set the Remaining Work field to zero. That tells Project that
the task is in fact complete and it only took 2 hours. If you then display the Baseline Work field you will see that the original plan was 4 hours. You can also display Work Variance.

    We have the following scenario: The system does not default the Actual Duration when the Start Date, Time and Finish Date, Time are entered on the time confirmation, it should calculate the time and insert the value in the Actual Duration field.
    Is it possilbe.

  • Error Project Server 2010, % Complete, Work and Actual Work

    Hi Everyone
    I have a Project Server 2010 SP2 Environment, The farm contains 3 Servers.
    1 WFE, 1WebApp, 1 BD. All servers in the farm are Windows Server 2008 R2 and the Data Base Server is SQL Server 2008 R2
    The Context:
    The Project Managers create the Project in Project Professional 2010 SP2 for support Annual Maintenance about a software, then the team members go to my tasks in PWA to create the task inside the stage in the project, then they put the actual work, then they
    send the progress to his project manager.
    So, the project manager goes to the approval page to approve two times, one, the task creation and two, the progress.
    So far all ok but when the project manager open the Gantt in Project Professional 2010 SP2 , the task that the team member has sent appear with a 100 percent complete, but the work with 0 hours and the actual work with 0 hours too, being that should appear
    with the hours the team member has sent, that is my problem.
    This occur only with this project manger and his team member, all of others project managers in the platform don't report this issue.
    I already have  re open the project and re publish too
    So , let me know if you have some idea about this issue.

    Only other ideas is to make sure the duration isn't 0, which would make it a milestone.
    Have the resources, recall the timesheets and resubmit.  Run it thru cycle again and see if they actual show up.
    Finally, you can run SQL query and see where the data may be. 
    1) Check if status manager is who you think it is
    2) Check if project shows actuals in sql.  Doesn't explain why not showing in schedule.

    This statement will apply any outstanding database updates and wait until they have actually been put on the database before proceeding to the next statement.
    An ordinary commit work will initiate the process to update the databases in a separate task and will press on in your abap.
    COMMIT WORK: ( Asynchronous)
    Your program does not wait for any acknowledgement. it just start executing the next statment after COMMIT WORK.
    <b>COMMIT WORK and WAIT</b>: (Synchronous)
    Whereas For <b>COMMIT WORK and WAIT</b>, the system waits for the acknowledgment, and then moves to the next statement.

    I am trying to make a permanent (default) change in working and non-working days. I am living in Israel and our non-working days are friday and saturday. I want to configure these as the non-working days so I won't need to do it manually via the change work

    If you are using project server then you can do it permanent from 
    PWA --> Server Settings --> Enterprise Data --> Enterprise  Calendar then
    You can configure either your stranded calendar or create a new calendar in which you can make Sunday to Thursday as working days and Friday and Saturday as non working days.
    You have to do it manually. There is no tool available which will do the same for you.
    Where as if you are using Microsoft Project professional stand alone then for every plan (MPP file) you have to do it.

  • Need to Enter Real Subtask "Actual Work" and "Actual Finish"

    I am creating a Project file by importing a CSV file.  I need to be able to import both the real Actual Work hours and the real Actual Finish dates contained in the CSV file.  Somehow Project ties these two together for finished Subtasks: 
    entering the Actual Work sets the Actual Finish.  And entering the Actual Finish clears the Actual Work.
    Is there a sequence to enter those for a Subtask, and display what is in the CSV file, rather than what Project wants to compute?

    If you set the % Work Complete field to 100%, then the Actual Finish field should not be empty. Do you have automatic calculation turned off? Are you using manual scheduling mode?
    For the test sequence I ran, my task type is Fixed Work. I set % Work Complete to 100%. At that point Project assumes the task finished as planned so it sets the Actual Finish date to be the Finish date and the Actual Work to equal the Work. Now you need
    to adjust the work and finish date. If you simply change the value in the Actual Work field, Project will reset the % work complete if the actual work value does not equal the Work field (remember, task is fixed work). So to "replan" the task to what actually
    happened, you must update the Work field with the actual work value. Finally, if the Actual Finish is not the Finish, then the Actual Finish date must be updated. Try that.
    Project's scheduling equation is:
    Duration = Work/Units.

    In the development system i have only few records its working fine,but when it is been moved to test system there are 2500 records in the database so the report is taking much time(more than 5 hours )

  • Screen sharing worked and not working

    i have set up both my computers for screen sharing and have accessed my macbook pro 17" (snow leopard- up to date)  for months on my macbook pro 15" (lion- up to date)- it worked....
    THEN, when i went in reverse- mb17" accessing my mb15"- it worked...
    BUT NOW... neither can access eachother's screen remotely! haven't changed anything, but get the message that i need to 'check the screen sharing is enabled, that my network is working', OR i get the endless 'connecting to mb17"' window that never connects- on both computers!
    HOWEVER- both computers can access files remotely... just not the screen
    what to do? like i said, IT WORKED until my mp17" accessed my mb15" and neither works... like it cancelled eachother out!
    any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Since the earlier post I have managed to Screen Share.
    I did put the Mac Firewall On.
    It was then as simple as using the item in the iChat Buddies menu (The option to allow sharing has to be On in the Video menu)
    It replaced the Video I was having and does not go back to the Video when the Keystroke of Control+ESC is used and the Video chat has to be re-established.
    I do not have Encryption.

  • Getting Archie to boot....by doing FSTAB work and GRUB work

    Hello Forum
    i am trying to get Archie linux working.
    I have managed to install Archie to my hard disc drive
    my next job is to do the FSTAB and then configure the GRUB settings (menu1)....can anybody help me?
    my machine currently just boots up to a grub prompt

    i noticed that Archie has a GUI tool on the live desktop concerning FSTAB.....could this help me?
    what do i need to do type and do to configure GRUB?

    yes....the CD used was
    Archie VIKA 0.6.....quite recent.
    The man who wrote the "install to hard drive script" is on the Archie forums.
    the GUI version of the HDD installer does NOT work in Archie....it is very buggy.
    but you run the HDD installer script from a terminal and it works...but of course, it does not cover FSTAB or GRUB...
    i found the other distro called ARCH OFFICE....now this is completely automated and looks very easy for anybody to install...

    if you read at the bottom it mentions FSTAB and the GRUB boot loader......
    these 2 topics are the only things needed to get my Archie going here....i was wondering if i could use the normal Arch CD to boot....and select those topics from the menu and my changes would then affect my HDD Archie?
    not sure if the normal Arch CD even has those 2 topics...or if they are only present in the Arch Office CD...
    would it be OK to use Arch office?....does it matter that it is 2 years old?....could i just update it when it's installed?

  • Multiclip working and not working at the same time... not making edits

    I sync'd and loaded my muliclips and it started off just fine, then i had to pause it while for a second, then i went back to it and it looked like it was running fine it was putting the blue marks in the timeline and my record monitor was switching fine. when i finished i clicked on the timeline and it didnt make the edits after i paused it. So the first half worked and the second half didnt, the blue marker points are still there. what could i have done wrong and is there anyway to put those edits in without redoing the whole clip over again?

    Have you loaded the multiclip button bars?...Tools/Button Bars/Multiclip.
    Exactly how are you working the multiclip...Buttons?, clicking in the viewer?
    It sounds like you are 'switching' the shots and not 'cutting' them. If this is the case, then you'll need to re-edit the cuts you thought you were making.
    As a general rule, I'll only go several 'cuts' at a time, then stop the playhead, let them activate, then carry on. The more cuts you do without stopping, the more you will lose, if you decide you want to make changes.

    Designed a 4 pp form monthly report.
    (Extended features in Adobe Reader are already applied)
    Eight persons will fill it in order to sent to specific clients who only will read it
    But only two say it works. And told that sometimes the information could no be saved...
    Doing this in Pc and Mac.
    At the same time other people (in our office and some friends) said it worked...
    How to detect the problem?
    They updated Acrobat Reader version 8.
    Does the end user need to hace Reader 8?
    Is necessary to save the form in some way before sending it to the end user?
    (Some body in this forum proposed as a solution to print as PDF. What does it mean?)
    Perhaps do they need Reader extensions?
    Of course, they want to come back to MWord, losing the time invested in the form... and losing the advantages offered by Acrobat.

    First step should be to compare the environments of the users, starting with:
    - Operting System (Windows/Mac), and version (XP,Vista, Windows 7, etc.)
    - Reader version (also making sure they're actually using Adobe Reader, and not some 3rd-party application, like Preview on Mac)

  • Re-allocating Actual Costs and Actual Work from one project to multiple projects

    My company would like to track costs in one project and then re-allocate those costs to multiple projects.  Example: An end user would submit a timesheet against a task named 'Analysis' for Project A.  Once accepted and published, the
    costs for those hours would be subtracted from Project A and 60% of those costs would be transferred to the 'Analysis' task for Project X and 40% of the costs for those hours would be transferred to Project Y. 
    We believe we can accomplish this through reporting, but before we go this route, we wanted to make sure there was not a logical, supported way in MS Project Server to complete these actions.  Could a script be developed to accomplish this?

    Out of the box Project and Project Server do not support this. However with VBA anything is possible. You could also use PSI to work directly with project data in teh Server db but that would take much longer to develop. Check you can do what you want
    in VBA then you can use the result to spec the server version afterwards.
