Question re: making root a role

Once root is made a role, you cannot log directly in as root, even on the console. If all your user accounts are maintained in NIS/NIS+/LDAP etc, and your naming service is unavailable, does that mean you cannot log in? Is it a standard practice to always create a local account with the root role?
Thanks,
Mark

Yup works fine... to add even more complexity - there wasn't a cable in the house long enough to reach between the APExtreme and the Cisco switch, so I tried something else.. I had my bluray player plugged into the rj45 of an  Airport Express in wireless bridge mode. I plugged that AP Express into port 2 on the Cisco switch, and my laptop into port 1, turned off wifi on the laptop - everything works fine.
A little laggy, but it proves that the setup works, and I can get to moving some components around now so that I can run a cable between the AP Extreme and the Cisco switch.
Thanks for the help!

I am being prompted to enter security questions when making a purchase on my new IPad.  I don't believe I have ever setup security questions on my apple id.  I have tried logging into my apple id and have chosen the security and priviacy settings to set up security questions.  However I am prompted to enter answers to security questions and am told they don't match.  How to I create new security questions or reset them?

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • Questions on making a super simple dvd

I have a few (probably simple!) questions about making a dvd with iDVD. I made the movie in iMovie using the computer's camera and imported it into iDVD no problems. 1st question - how can I put track markings in? 2nd question - I don't want any fancy themes or anything, just a simple black page at the beginning with a title, or even nothing at all, just straight into the movie. How can I do this? 3rd question - I recorded it with an external mic, but the sound is quite soft. I increased it to 150% in iMovie (any more than that and it started to have an electronic kind of buzz); can I increase it anymore in iDVD?
    Thanks for your help!

ad 1) in iM, click on 'help', type 'chapter markers'
ad 2) switch to Structure View in iDVD and drag movie into the Autostart Box
you have about 4.5 options to create a non-themed DVD, read advice on my website:
    http://karsten.schluter.googlepages.com/nothemedvd
and, by standards, a DVD HAS to have a menu.. if someone pushes the 'Menu' button on the remote, the disk HAS to offer some.. any.. content..-
ad 3) no, iDVD is no editor... 'share to Mediabrowser' in iM, launch Garageband, open project from Media Browser and try to 'push' volume in the audio processor of iLife.. share again, to get audio changes in iM ..

  • Terminology question: "booting as root" vs. "booting in single user mode"

Terminology question: "booting as root" vs. "booting in single user mode".  Are these terms interchangeable, or is there a subtle or not-so-subtle difference?  (Obviously something I don't do often.)
    Thanks in advance.

Boot to Single user allows root access.
It isn't "booting to root" as in Linux, but I think is as close as it gets.
You can enable root from a normal boot:

  • Question on Contract Manager Adminstrator roles

I have a question on IT roles around contract manager. What do people typically see as far as contract manager IT administrator roles ?
We are deploying contract manager to a user base of about 500 users and perhaps 100 concurrent users (eventually). Right now we have a small production deployment for 3-4 construction projects.
We are trying to figure out how to structure the contract manager admin role. One idea we have is to establish a 1st level of support, provisioning users and possibly setting up new projects. I could be involved in a 2nd level of support, dealing with more infrastructure problems, such as defining new security templates, configuring document attachment storage, troubleshooting problems with the server or with letters. We’d structure it this way so that the day-to-day work of dealing with users would fall to the 1st level of support and the more backend problems would fall to me. I have some other projects I’m involved in so the day-to-day dealing with CM users would not be as much of a burden on me.
My boss is concerned about clear cut roles. If his group is responsible for an enterprise system (contract manager) then only members of his team (me) have the power to do things like modify the configuration of CM, start/stop the server, reboot the machine. Other IT team members, not a member of his team (1st level support person) could have admin privileges to deal with user/project provisioning only. 1st level support person wouldn’t have full administrator privileges. Is this technically possible? Does the security model of CM support such a division of labor?
What else have people seen that works as far as roles? Is having just one person take on both user/project provisioning and the rest of the admin tasks doable? If a single person is managing contract manager, is this a part-time load or a full-time load? Recall that I’m slated to be involved in other projects such as UCM in general, I/PM (Oracle Imaging and Process Management), possibly some integration projects too.
Are there any guidelines for best practices around admin roles?
If anyone has any experience/opinions on Primavera P6 roles I’d like to hear about them also.

Yes, the arrangement you describe with you being the 2nd level support (server level functions) and another person being 1st level (user admin, etc) is certainly technically possible. You would have full admin rights to the server on which CM resides, and the 1st level person would only require access to the CM Admin web-based interface through an ID and password. From what you describe, that person would not need physical access to the server at all in order to handle the user account management.
Now, based on the number of users which you descibe, it really sounds like a full time job for at least two people. These numbers will vary based on how much the CM app will be customized and integrated with other systems. Beyond the IT support you describe, there will be a need to have "super-user" level users that can handle the application level requests such as how do I add a new contact, what value do I put in that field, etc.
Although it's becoming more common, 500 users is still a large implementation in the PCM world. I've seen organizations with up to 10 IT type people involved with implementations of that scale, but maybe not all full time.

  • OT: question about multiple root directories

ok, so on this website i just transferred to a new host, i
    password
protected a directory, and for many people (possibly
    everyone) it is
asking for the login info twice or three times before it lets
    you in. i
contacted the host tech support, who gave me an explanation
    that i don't
think makes sense. or maybe it does, but i don't think
    applies to my
problem. and even if it does, they didn't offer any advice on
    how to
solve the problem, just what might be causing it. bad tech
    support.
anyway, i had a different idea about what the might be. there
    are two
root directories on the server: public_html and www. they
    both have the
same files, and therefore my protected directory is protected
    in both
places. to me, that seems like it could be why it's asking
    for login
    info more than once.
so, i want to find out if this is the case by deleting the
    one i'm not
uploading to. so basically, my question is, if i have chosen
    public_html
as the directory that i upload to, is it safe to delete the
    www
directory? or is there a reason that i need two root
    directories and,
essentially, two copies of my site on the server?
i realize these are probably questions best suited for my
    host, but i'm
unimpressed with their tech support so far (though i like
    everything
else about them), and i'm confident that someone here will be
    able to
    answer this question for me.
    thanks!

ok, well that's good to know! thanks.
also, i changed my mind about the tech support response.
    here's what he
    said:
Typically when you are seeing multiple login prompts like
    what you
describe it has to do with content/site linking.
Here is a rather wordy explanation:
When entering a password-protected web site for the first
    time, you
will occasionally notice that you are asked for your
    password twice.
This may happen immediately after you entered the password
    the first
time, or it may happen when you click on the first link
    after
    authenticating the first time.
This happens for a very simple, but nonetheless confusing,
    reason,
again having to do with the way that the browser caches the
    login
    information.
Login information is stored on the browser based on the
authentication realm, specified by the AuthName directive,
    and by
the server name. In this way, the browser can distinguish
    between
the Private authentication realm on one site and on another.
    So, if
you go to a site using one name for the server, and internal
    links
on the server refer to that server by a different name, the
    browser
has no way to know that they are in fact the same server.
For example, if you were to visit the URL
    http://example.com/private/,
    which required authentication, your
browser would remember the supplied username and password,
associated with the hostname example.com. If, by virtue of
    an
internal redirect, or fully-qualified HTML links in pages,
    you are
    then sent to the URL
    http://www.example.com/private/,
    even though
this is really exactly the same URL, the browser does not
    know this
for sure, and is forced to request the authentication
    information
    again, since example.com and www.example.com
    <
    http://www.example.com> are
not exactly the same hostname. Your
browser has no particular way to know that these are the
    same web site.
at first i thought that didn't make any sense because i've
    been using
the same url every time. but after paying closer attention
    during the
login process, i see that he's right. i've been typing in the
    url with
the www, but once you get logged in, there is no www. so i
    tried typing
it in without the www, and i got right in with the first
    attempt.
so, i suppose my question now is, can i make it so that
    typing in the
url with the www, lets you in on the first login attempt? or
    should i
just tell everyone to leave out the www?
    thanks for the help!

  • Questions on making Movies with new camcorder

    Hi all,
First, let me say these forums are extremely useful. Thanks for taking a minute to read (and maybe respond). I have a couple of questions / need some advice about making iMovies with my new camcorder.
My camcorder is a Sony DCR-SR40 - it's a 30GB hard-disk based digital camcorder. It creates MPEG-2 files (and connects to my G5 with USB2.0).
    1. When I get the camcorder connected and copy over the files, I can't play them in QuickTime 7 (I got an error opening the file). So I spent $20 and bought the QT MPEG-2 plugin - now I can play them but there's no audio. Am I doing something wrong or is there a bug with QT?
    2. So I downloaded Streamclip and can happily convert files to a bunch of different formats (what a neat app!). Is there a format that would be best to convert to for making iMovies (iM 6)? DV? MPEG-4? (see next question).
    3. When I create my iM6 project, should I create DV or MPEG-4? (Is there a good summary anywhere on all these formats? It confuses the heck outta me.) I want to turn my iMovies into DVDs to watch with my family and QT movies that I can leave as files and watch on my work laptop. What's the best format (DV or MPEG-4) to use?
    4. Assuming I create DV iMovie projects, my thought was to convert my MPEG-2 files (from the camcorder) and AVI files (from my digital cam that takes short movies) to DV using Streamclip, then import those into iMovie; all that seems like a bunch of work (I guess I could use the batch function) - but is this the right way of doing things? Or can I just let iMovie do the translation to DV when I import?
Sorry for all the noob questions here, I just don't have a lot of time to tinker (15 month old and newborn) so I'd prefer to just get advice from the folks that know (you all!).
    Thanks so much
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
as you allready realized: the iApps are made for miniDV/D8, … but you have found the workarounds...
    1) … you hear no audio when exporting/converting the mpegs with QT... that's no bug, that's due to the nature of mpeg2... the audio and video are "woven together" (tech term= muxxed)... QT supports this playback-format for ... ehm, playback, but "de-muxxing" is not supported by QT....
    2) best format for use in iM/iDVD? my standard reply: DV
(I've read in the meantime, some report using the Apple Lossless Codec, you should find in the export options of SC, delivers better results - beauty lies in eye of... needs a powerful Mac and "eats" 4 -5x more diskspace then DV)....
    3) DV; mpeg4 is supported to handle iSight "video" and some digi-stills deliver in this format; again, mpegs are for delivery, not for processing.... I didn't found THE website for explaining all that, you can spend hours on wiki and many, many more sites... for the average user (as me), I wrote (still write...) a short summary, click here >> Codexx; an excellent source for background info is forum's member QuickTimeKirk's "book" (=.pdf delivery), you get for 10$ here >> QTpro explained
    4) … that IS a bunch of work, because you tought the old dog new tricks... with my miniDV and still-cam all that is done with a single click and works like charm ...
this board is full of Qs concerning support of DVDcorders/HDcorders... One can just speculate, wether Apple will implement the support of these formats... I strongly guess NOT, … we saw in the past e.g. no support of (S)VCD, another popular format (to its time), but not fullfilling the high standards of SJ....
no, you're not a noob - excellent prepared, precise discription of your problems... I wish, all posts are read like that....
have fun with your kids! it's getting better every day!! (my son now is 6y, in two weeks he starts with school....adventure!!!)

  • Question on Olite and its role

Hey guys I am a newcomer to BPEL. I have been playing around with this stuff for a couple of days. The first time I ran the BPEL server I set up Oracle 10g as the database to store all the process information and so on. I avoided olite at that time because I was accessing a remote database. I setup oracle 10g and ran the scripts as described in the IRCA zip and all was well.
So now I have reenabled olite and my question is, in the IRCA zip there was a directory called olite that had olite specific scripts in it. There was no README in there however. Am I correct in assuming that the olite datbase if reenabled already hsa the tables required for the BPEL PM to work? Or do I have to run the scripts in the olite directory and if so then how and in what order? I hope my question makes sense. I am just trying to get comfortable with the whole environment.
Thanks in advance for all replies to my question.

OLite that comes with BPEL standalone version (not mid-tier) already has the necessary schema. You dont need to run any other script.

  • Making WF_Admin a Role

We currently have a single user set up as the Work Flow admin in transaction SWDC. We want any system notifications from workflow to go to more than this one individual. We attempted to set up the WF Admin as a Role but it does not seem to work. Looking for advice on the best way to do this.
    This is what we tried.
    Created a role called BCQAS:WF_ADMIN.
assigned two people to this role using PFCG.
Changed wf admin to be Role BCQAS:WF_ADMIN using SWDC.
We have an event defined which, when executed, is guarenteed to generate the error "Error in event receiver".
When we set up the WF Admin as a User, only that user recieves workflow system messages.
When we set up the WF admin as a Role, nobody recieves the system message.

We needed to get SAP involved to help work out the kinks but this is now working. This is what we did:
    1) Created a new role (role name less than 12 characters per OSS note above)
    2) Assigned several SAP Logon ID's to that role.
    3) Had each of those individuals activate Auto Forwarding in their Office Settings to an Outlook Email address.
    4) Now the WF Admin and the technical support staff all recieve the notifications.
    Thanks to All.

Hi, i need some help understanding untrusted forests and system roles.

  • CUP question - Possible to restrict available roles based on the requester?

    Helo all,
One of our customers wants to put restrictions on the access requester in the CUP module: meaning that some requesters should only be able to request roles assigned to functional area u2018Procurementu2019, while other requesters should only be able to request roles that are assigned to all functional areau2019s except for u2018Procurementu2019.
Do you know if this is possible or do you see an alternative solution?
    Thanks in advance,

There is no real way to restrict people from doing that, but you could use the buisness process in role attributes to ensure if the select the correct buisness process only roles listed under a particular buisness process are listed when being searched.
You could make the buisness process field mandatory on the main screen and than that gets carried over when searching for roles, obviuosly that can always be changed by the user.

    Chinmaya
