Quicktime 7.6.6 problems

I have been having a problem with Quicktime Pro 7.6.6 for about a month (previous versions have worked with out problems).
The problem is that Quicktime requires administrative permission to run when UAC is enabled. As a result, "right click" to play a .mov file returns an error, "Error-1856: An unknown error occurred". Additionally, other applications that use the Quicktime engine to import/export .mov files fail with a message that Quicktime is not properly installed (Vagas MS 9 Platinum, Bryce7, Photoshop CS3 extended, Premier pro CS3, etc.)
Browser integration with IE8 is working as expected. I can play and save .mov files from web pages with no problem.
The "unknown error 1856" is an ACL problem (from some other sites).
I have searched the system for any "old Quicktime fragments", and have not found any (My Windows 7 install was a "clean" install Nov 1, 2009).
I have moved / rebuilt the preference files.
I have reviewed the folder and file permissions, and they seem to be correct.
Can anyone point me to some solution?

64-bit makes things a bit fiddlier.
If it is an ACL issue, and we don't know which keys/files/folders are affected, we can possibly get past this by using a shotgun approach.
We can try the technique from the following weblog entry:
[Solving setup errors by using the SubInACL tool to repair file and registry permissions|http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2006/09/04/solving-setup-e rrors-by-using-the-subinacl-tool-to-repair-file-and-registry-permissions.aspx]
... but we'll need to make some additional modifications to the Reset.cmd file.
When you're in Notepad, editing the two YOURUSERNAME values, also change the %programfiles% values in lines 1 and 8 to %programfiles(x86)% (Subinacl is a 32-bit program so it installs in (x86) by default. If we don't make the line 1 change, Windows can't find the program. Since QuickTime is 32-bit, all its program files lurk in Program Files (x86) rather than program files. Hence the change at line 8. The QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx that live in SysWOW64 on a 64-bit system (instead of in System32 as on a 32-bit system should be caught by line 9 as it stands, so no changes needed there.
Also while you're in Notepad, make sure that all nine lines start on a new line. They can all get smooshed up into a single line for some folks, and if that happens the Reset.cmd won't work.
I'd also strongly recommend setting up a System Restore point immediately prior to the subinnacl run.
The log file created is, unfortunately, in the order of a GB in size. So unless you're got some really-heavy-duty text-editing software to hand, it'll probably be of no help to you.

  • Quicktime and media encoder problem

I am trying to make a quicktime movie with Premiere CS4. The project is 870 still frames rendered from 3DS MAX. Everything works fine when I export and it sends the movie to Media Encoder's Queue. When I hit "Start Queue". the project starts to encode then quickly finishes with a green check mark next to the project, however no video is made. Please note I have tried other file formats such as AVI and it works fine. This seems to be am issue with QT. I have tried just about every QT codec as well and nothing seems to work. The codec I normally use is animation.
I have successfully done this many times in the past with no problems. Unfortunately, I recently had to replace my main harddrive which died that stored Windows XP, therefore I had to re-install Adobe Master Collection CS4. After the reinstall media encoder won't make Quicktime movies anymore.  And yes I have QT installed. I had ver 7.6.2. I read somewhere that 7.5.5 works better with premiere CS4 so I found that, uninstalled 7.6.2,  and installed 7.5.5, however, unfornuately it did not fix the problem. Anyone know how to fix this or having the same issues? Please see my specs below. Please let me know if you need more info. Thanks for help in advance.
    Intel Quad processor
    4 GIG Ram

Quicktime 7.5.5 (also tried 7.6.2 - the most recent)

There was someone having a similar problem on the www.weddingvideodoneright.com forums, and others were having various issues with ME not creating files and so I've copied this from that thread and hope it helps. Also, check out the Adobe link at the bottom-

Digging further, this is the "official" solution  from adobe  -
    Quote
Do one or both of the following solutions:
Solution 1:  Create a shortcut to the Premiere Pro executable file, rename the shortcut to  Premiere, and move the shortcut to C:\Program Files\Common  Files\Adobe\dynamiclink.
    Close all Adobe applications.
In Windows  Explorer, navigate to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. (If you  installed Premiere Pro CS4 in a location other than the default of C:\Program  Files\Adobe, then navigate to your custom installation location.)
Right-click on Adobe Premiere Pro.exe (which might appear without the .exe  extension) and choose Create Shortcut.
Rename the newly created shortcut to  just Premiere.
Important: The name of the shortcut must be exactly  Premiere with no other characters.
Open a second Windows Explorer  window, and navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\dynamiclink.
Move the Premiere shortcut that you created into the dynamiclink folder.
Solution 2: Remove and reinstall all Premiere Pro CS4 components or all  Adobe Creative Suite 4 components.
    Do one of the following:
Windows  XP: Choose Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
Windows  Vista: Choose Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
In the  list of installed programs, select Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, Adobe Creative Suite  4 Production Premium, or Adobe Creative Suite 4 Master Collection.
Click  Change/Remove (Windows XP) or Uninstall (Windows Vista).
Follow the  on-screen instructions to remove all components of Premiere Pro CS4 (including  Adobe Encore CS4 and Adobe OnLocation CS4) or to remove all components of your  edition of Adobe Creative Suite 4.
    Re-install your Adobe software.

  • ITunes 5 (Quicktime 7.0.2) problem with Archicad

Apparently Quicktime 7.0.2 is incompatible with Archicad (both R8.0 and R9.0).
After installing iTunes 5, archicad starts to crash.
When uninstall Quicktime 7.0.2 and install a previous version (6.5.2) Archicad works fine. Then iTunes5 can´t start.
Is it a configuration problem, where to find iTunes 4.9 to download?

    hi Rui!
hmmmm. we've had similar reports about Quark and QT 7. in the Quark case, it's apparently a problem with a dll. Kari seems to have the best handle on this:
Kari Horst, "ITunes update hoses other software ..." #2, 04:34pm Sep 13, 2005 CDT
does that seem at all relevant to your situation?
(hopefully you'll be getting more helpful "advice" than mine over at your QT for Windows thread.)

  • Quicktime 7.6.4 problem that might not have really been addressed yet

Other than the export controller problem that has been mentioned before, in which the export controller stops working, I am having another problem with 7.6.4 that needs a solution. Well, to me, it looks like it has something to do with QuickTime 7.6.4...after explorer.exe stopped working and then restarted, I looked at the event viewer on my computer, which runs Windows Vista, and saw the following in the entry for the error:
Faulting application: Explorer.EXE, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e01da5
faulting module QTCF.dll_unloaded, version 0.0.0.0, time stamp 0x4aa21f2c,
    exception code 0xc0000005
    fault offset 0x739bc11b
    process id 0x16ac
    application start time 0x01ca58dccfc02c07
This has happened several times since 7.6.4 was installed with the iTunes 9.0 upgrade I did. Today, I installed iTunes 9.0.2.25, which had QuickTime 7.6.4 with it also. I know iTunes won't run without QuickTime, and I need iTunes because I have an iPhone 3G. Most of the time when the incident with explorer.exe happens, it's while I am accessing the My Computer folder, which has an iPhone icon in it along with the drive letter icons and so on. Occasionally, it happens when I access any other random folder on my computer. It's annoying, and I'd like to know something: other than going back to a previous version of Quicktime, is there some other way to stop the QTCF.dll_unloaded problem? I am thankful to anyone who can help.

sfc worked that time. After the scan, it told me that there was a corrupt file that it couldn't repair, and it told me to look at CBS.log for details. All the CBS.log file said for the time of that scan was something about the settings.ini file for Windows Vista's sidebar being corrupt and unable to be repaired. Here's some of what it said:

  • QuickTime X plugins causing problems?

Still after trying to export videos from QuickTime X they appear as a black screen with no audio.
Could it be any of these plugins causing a problem?
    Plugins:
    AC3MovieImport
    AppleAVCIntraCodec
    AppleHDVCodec
    AppleIntermediateCodec
    AppleMPEG2Codec
    AppleProResCodec
    DivX Decoder
    DivX Encoder
    DVCPROHDCodec
    FCP Uncompressed 422
    IMXCodec
    MayaIFF
    Perian
I'm trying to export using QuickTime X presets with a variaty of different source files, but nothing uncommon.

So removing either Perian or DivX should resolve the problem?
It may or may not fix your particular problem—but, it would remove one possible source of conflict. Frankly, many people are experiencing "black" screen issues with the problem being blamed on everything from conflicts with installed hardware devices to issues with security updates to problems with FCP file output. Since you did not provide any work flow specifics, it is difficult to classify your particular problem.

  • Quicktime X Aspect Ratio problems.

I recorded films on my Samsung HMX-H100N camcorder and imported the files on to my macbook.
Having OSX Lion I am forced to have Quicktime X as a default for Final Cut Pro. MY camcorder
films in 1280x720 however the aspect ratio displayed in Quicktime X is 2275x720. The width is very
stretched out. I downloaded Quicktime Player 7 and the aspect ratio was displayed fine. Is there a way to
have Quicktime X display the correct aspect ratio?

Is there a way to have Quicktime X display the correct aspect ratio?
No. There are basically two ways to correct the problem. One is to re-compress the file and the other, in the case of H.264/AAC content in MOV, MP4, or M4V file containers, is to simply reset the PAR display value and/or the current display size dimensions.
In the case of recompressing the files, you export the file as either a non-anamorphic file (one in which the encoded dimensions of the file equal the display dimensions, in which case the PAR is 1:1) or you encode a valid anamorphic file which sets a non-1:1 PAR value and also stores the actual display dimensions for media players that require them.
Your main problem is that applications like the QT X Player and iMovie '08/'09/'11 use the file's PAR setting to display the width of the video given its height dimension while other applications like QT 7/QT 7 Pro, GarageBand, and MPEG Streamclip display the files based on the actual "Current Size" dimensions stored in the file. From what you've said, it appears that either the PAR value was either changed by your work flow or was originally encoded incorrectly for use by the QT X Player. Unfortunately, while QT 7 Pro can be used to correct the scaled display dimensions for a file having the wrong "Current Size" dimensions and correct PAR setting, QT X cannot correct erroneous PAR values whether or not the "Curtrent Size" dimensions are correct. In the former case, the QT 7 Pro correction will allow the file to play correctly in both QT 7 and QT X, but in the latter case the file will always play incorrectly in QT X and correctly in QT 7.
Luckily, in the case of standard H.264/AAC files wrapped in MOV, MP4, and/or M4V file container, there is a way to correct either or both problems. The question at this point is what kind of files are you working with at this point. In reviewing the manual for your device, it was unclear if the actual recordings are standard H.264/AAC files in an appropriate file container or AVCHD content which has to be process by some sort of included software processing before it is in the required compression format and file container type.
In any case, if/once the files are in the proper format and file type, they can be processed by a utility called "Subler" which is available online free but is supported by user donations. The work flow is essentially straight forward. You open the source file and select the the audio and video data to be included in the final file. You then select the video track, deselect the "Preserve Aspect Ratio", enter the "Scaled Size" for QT 7 playback, create the "Aspect Ratio" value of QT X playback by entering the QT 7 "Scaled Size" width value followed by the "Normal Size" width value, press the "Tab" (or Return) key to "lock in" the last entered value, and save the resulting file. This should create an M4V file which plays correctly in an QT or QT-like media players.

  • Quicktime 7.0.3 problem

I system restored from my previous problem, installed 7.0.3 but now i get the following error:

Description: DLL function call crashed: QTInstallCode.QuicktimePostInstallProc
    Please help

Nothing wrong with QuickTime 7.0.3 (or you'd see more posts).
Open your Utilities folder and then the Audio MIDI Setup app.
Set the Audio Output /Format to 44100 Hz.
Quit and restart QT Player and see if all is well.

I know this topic has been discussed alot but I dont seem to have found a solution to solve my problem. I just got a new laptop and downloaded the latest version of quicktime to find out that I am not having any visuals just sound I have read many threads but none of the solutions seem to work, however I investigated and found out that the problem is with this codec (Streambox ACT- L2).This codec is responsible for the video streaming and use to be available through the Quicktime components page however now it is listed and not available for download not even the newer version ACT-L3. Does anybody know where I can download this codec? Thanks in advance.

  • Quicktime 7 Pro Export problem in Snow Leopard

    Hello.
I always use the QuickTime 7 Pro Export feature, but ever since I've upgraded to Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.0), whenever I hit Command+E or click "Export..." from the File menu, QuickTime will just quit with no warning. No CrashReporter will open, nothing. It does this with every movie. Has anybody else had this same problem? Is it as easy as reinstalling QuickTime?
    Thanks in advance.
    -Ben

I Leopard I used QT7 to export .avi files with .srt subtitle files to AppleTV. It worked slowly, but perfectly. Now in Snow Leopard I tried to do the same, the result is a file with subtitles over black video. (not with the new QTX nor with the old QT7 left behind in Utilities)
This situation is so frustrating! it has nothing to do with mac! this is so Windows! How come the new QT o System environment limits you in this freaking way? I want my Leopard back. I could live without every new feature in Snow Leopard, but I can´t live without my old Quicktime 7.

  • QuickTime/After Effects redner problem

This is a strange one. When batch rendering from After Effects CS3 to .mov format, some random files will have an upper case file extension, and the rest lower case. Our automated QA process will only deal with lower case extensions, so this is a problem. I don't believe the issue lies with After Effects or the destination share, since AE projects render fine using different codecs (Etymonix, for example). Here's our config info. We are still using QT 7.5.5 because of other AE issues with the latest version.
    Clients/render nodes:
    Windows XP Pro SP3
    After Effects CS3 w/8.0.2 patch
    QuickTime 7.5.5
    Batch render app:
    Deadline 3.1 SP2

Actually I do. What seems to happen is that when the file name is short enough, it will end up being one case, when it's longer, in the other. The reason behind this certainly being how some file systems discriminate between long file names and short ones, and not adding a long name, if the file can be described with teh short name (or simply using the same name). Depending on which part your other system reads, this may show up as different case names. Likewise, you could simply be seeing code page/ Unicode conversion issues during network transfers. If only one workstation has a different setting than the others, it might royally interfere with the file naming on the storage, beause then the files will use the name defined by the workstation who requested/ created it (first come, first served). Anyway, this is far too high-endish and specialized stuff you are working with, so I don't think your will get conclusive answers here. I even couldn't find out what CIFS actually does use under the hood, as I strongly believe it's just a wrapper system for another native file system (anything from FAT16 to Linux EXT), so maybe ask the Deadline people and Isilon...

  • Quicktime and iTunes 6 problems...Urgent Help! Please!

I have recieved an iPod for christmas, for use on my laptop which currently uses iTunes 6. I would like to be able to burn some tracks onto a disc, but a CD-Burner for the laptop is not availiable. My Family Computer however, does have a CD-Burner, so I thought I would be able to burn the tracks from here. I installed the version of iTunes supplied with the iPod and connected the ipod to the computer. I attempted to play some purchased music, in order to add it to my library and was told it was not authorised to play in the computer. I attemtpted to authorise it and it then told me that I needed to install iTunes 6. I did so, and half way through the download, it stopped and told me their was an error with the Quick time download (Error : - 3). I attemtpted to use iTunes after the installation finished and it told me that I could not use it becuase it require a certain version of Quicktime. I then attempted to dwnload the version of Quicktime, without iTunes. There was an error (1402). After tis there was another error (-1603). It then told me Quicktime could not complete its installation...Could anyone direct in the right direction to being able to have iTunes 6 and burn tracks from my iPod? Help would be MUCH appreciated...
I am using Windows XP Service Pack 2...

    hiya!
I then attempted to dwnload the version of Quicktime, without iTunes. There was an error (1402).
hmmm. that's the underlying problem that is causing the -3 on the itunes install.
let's try applying the following treatments:
Error 1406 or 1402 appears when you install iTunes or QuickTime for Windows
... and if you end up trying the regedit, let's take a few additional precautions on the standalone QT 7.0.3 reinstall after that.
reboot the PC first. then download and save a copy of the QT 7.0.3 installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off any antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    Quicktime 7.0.3 Standalone Installer
    keep us posted.

  • Error installing Quicktime: Lots of interesting problems

Hookay, I got a problem, see? It all started when I tried opening iTunes, but it would try and fail. I tried uninstalling, then reinstalling. Upon trying to reinstall, an error message came up saying that it needed Quicktime to install, so, I started troubleshooting Quicktime.
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling, went fine this first time. When I tried opening Quicktime to do a run test, it gave me the "Buffer C++ \ shutdown" message. So, I tried to uninstall that version. No go.
I then used the online guide to erase all mention of QT from my HD, by going into Windows\system32, using the regedit tool, using Windows Install Clean Up, and manually deleting QT from Program Files. Using the "Add or Remove Programs" function would not work, and quicktime eventually stopped showing up there. The included "uninstall" function in Start-programs didn't work. In between each of the above fixes, I would try to install the latest version. To each, I would get an error saying "There is a more current version of Quicktime installed." type of message, then the program would quit.
After going through all the above methods, I decided to run a "Find" on my C: and deleted every mention of QT. The only remaining thing is a file in C:\Windows\Cache\Adobe Reader 6.0\ENUBIG\Data1.cab that I can't delete, only copy or extract. I figured that I could now install a current copy without any ghosts to foul me up. No dice. Now, when I try to install the current version, I get an error saying "The older version of Quicktime cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group." So, here I am.
    Status of QT: FUBAR
Shows up on "Add or Remove Programs" - No
Shows up on Start-Programs - No

    Deleted from C:\Programs - Yes
Deleted from everywhere else - Yes, as far as I can tell

Try launching your Windows Installer CleanUp again.
Are there any myssterious "blank" entries or entries containg nothing but a version number showing up in the list of entries in CleanUp?
(If there's a version number on the otherwise blank line, what is it?)

  • Compressor 2 Quicktime to iPod Sizing Problem

    Hello,
As a podcaster, I have to convert regular quicktime files into iPod-compatible m4v format all the time. Usually I use Quicktime Pro to do this - its simple and I havent had any problems with it. But I'm looking for ways to reduce my file sizes, so I was looking into using Compressor for this.
I used the new H.264 iPod video setting, but got an unsatifactory result that mystifies me:
720x480 quicktime file, when converted via Quicktime Pro's iPod conversion, becomes 320x213 and looks fine.
The same file, when run through Compressor's iPod setting, goes to 320x240, BUT it looks stretched vertically.
Any ideas why this might be happening?
    Thanks,
    Simon

Actually, 320x240 is the correct aspect ratio for playback on a computer display. NTSC TV is a 4:3 aspect ratio so the correct viewing format for your 720x480 clip is actually 640x480 (note that the latter is a 4:3 ratio). This confusion results from the fact that NTSC TV displays use rectangular pixels while computer display pixels are usually square. Thus, in order to get the correct aspect ratio during playback on a computer's square pixels you need to set the video to 640x480 or 320x240. However, if you plan on viewing the output on a NTSC TV then either 720x480 or 320x213 are acceptable since both of those will result in a 4:3 viewing ratio during full screen playback on the TV (the conversion happens "auto-magically" -- in effect -- since a standard definition TV has a 4:3 aspect ratio).
Note further that the iPod video display is 320x240 (also 4:3) so I'd suspect that the best quality playback on the iPod would be obtained with a similar sized movie.

I'm trying to export a project from Final Cut to a Quicktime file, but after its been converted, the audio is slightly in front of the video. Everythin is in sync in the Final Cut priject, so it must happen during the conversion. The original film source in HDV 1080p24. I'm just trying to turn it into a Quicktime file so I can put it on a website, but I need this audio to sync up properly with the video. How should I set this up?

ok, I output a lot of footage using quicktime conversion so I can edit in after effects or output for the web. I usually use the animation or h264 codec but the problem still persists regardless of which codec I use. < </div>
If the relationship between the tracks does not change over the length of the clip, that is, the audio doesn't drift more, your clip's tracks are actually in sync. One of the tracks, video or audio, has been set to start sooner or later than the other. I have no idea how that can happen, sorry, but I'm going to suggest the solution is going to be much less complicated than you might think: it's going to be a simple user error. We all have them.
It's a binary search, then, no way to shortcut it.
You try to find a good export and figure out what's different between a good one and a bad one.
Hope you get better advice on how to debug it.
