QuickTime auto update after Sysprep in Windows 7

Hello all,
My orginization is in the process of developing and deploying Windows 7 images. We used to customized the Default User profile in Windows XP and when users logged in all their settings would be pre-customized so there were no update notifications or terms of agreement. The PCs are also frozen using DeepFreeze so updates would just be a nuisance.
One thing that does not transfer over in the CopyProfile phase of Sysprep is the "Do not automatically update Quicktime" setting. I uncheck the box on my base image and after the profile copies the box is checked back on for all new users.
The Java application also had this problem but I solved it by disabling JavaUpdate in the registry.
I have read up and it seems that copying the .QTP file with all the QuickTime preferences is one solution but is that file present in the Default profile on a Windows 7 environment?
Is their a registry value to change to disable update?
Does removing Apple Software Update disallow QuickTime updates?
Thank you in advance,
SMCC IT Staff

Well, I solved it!
Thanks to a YouTube video showing the correct registry keys to change I added the following commands to my Sysprep file:
     7 (oobeSystem)
          x86/amd64-Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup_6.1.7600.16385_neutral
                    FirstLogonCommands.
Check out this post out for details on how to setup a Sysprep answer file.
reg.exe load HKEY_USERS\TempHive "C:\Users\Default\NTUSER.DAT"
(Loads the DefaultUser's NTUSER.DAT file into Registry Editor)
reg.exe DELETE "HKEY_Users\TempHive\Software\Apple Computer, Inc.\QuickTime\LocalUserPreferences" /v FolderPath /f
(Deletes the incorrect value set by Sysprep (the value is pointing to the Administrator profile)
reg.exe ADD "HKEY_Users\TempHive\Software\Apple Computer, Inc.\QuickTime\LocalUserPreferences" /v FolderPath /t REG_SZ
     (Adds a blank value)
reg.exe unload HKEY_USERS\TempHive
     (Unloads the NTUSER.DAT file)
When a new user logs in the QuickTime folder path defaults to the new users profile: preferences set in the reference profile are copied, just like what happened in XP, and the browser plugin works correctly.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Yay!

  • JRE update after sysprep fails

    Hi,
During our rollout of windows 7, we are having problems with JRE 7. We can install and update without any problems before sysprep. But after sysprep when a user tries to update it fails with "installation Interrupted". We setup logging the install and found MSI error 1603, with a reference to CustomAction InstallJava. Any1 have any experience with a situation like this?

    We found the issue!
Apparently our Symantec Endpoint Protection, anti-virus program, had a definition setting called:
"Prevent registration of new Browser Helper Objects (HIPS) [AC15]" that was causing the issue.
We disabled this and the problem completely disappeared.

  • Disable auto-update for SYSTEM on windows

I wrote an AIR app that is called via a php 'exec' command for my employer. This is part of an automated system where there is no user interaction. The problem is that whenever the application is run, every now and then it will open the Adobe AIR Updater, expecting user input to allow the update or cancel.
I downloaded the AIR Settings Manager app, and it does a great job of disabling this auto-update, but ONLY for the user running the app. Is there any way to disable the auto-updates for SYSTEM?

    Hi Ozzy,
Setting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\AIR\UpdateDisabled to 1 will disable runtime updates for ALL users.  Adding the file%APPDATA%\Adobe\AIR\updateDisabled will disable updates on a PER user basis.
    Hope this helps,
    Chris

  • Start Menu Not Auto Updating After Installation of New Applications

// Also reported via Windows Feedback Tool //
After the installation of several applications, the new Start Menu does not necessarily automatically update to reflect the added programs.
The application’s folder is properly installed under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs, but it will not show under the Start Menu until the user logs out and logs in.
Interestingly enough, this behavior is not consistent.  Some applications installations are immediately reflected while others are not.
In this particular example, LibreOffice 4.3 was installed.

    Hi @Senttu
    Thank you for your reply.
You can try running the file checker to look for and try to repair corrupted files.
    Go to the command prompt.
Right click and run as administrator.
Type sfc /scannow and press enter.
You can also try  using the Windows troubleshooter.  Diagnose and repair Windows File and Folder Problems automatically.
If the issue should still remain, I suggest contacting  MIcrosoft for assistance.

  • 150 failed updates after system recovery, Windows 7

My machine is a Toshiba  Satellite L755D-S5160 running Windows 7 home premium.
after performing A complete recovery to out of box state, I immediately attempted to run windows update in order to install over 150 updates. I did not interrupt the process, nor was I running any other programs at the time. after taking an extremely long time, most of which it seemed like the computer had frozen, I was prompted to shut down the computer to finish installing the updates. But when I turned it back on I found that only a very few had actually installed. I have tried the Windows 7 update hot fix. I have tried the fix it utility. I even followed a rather lengthy step-by-step manual update reset process that involved typing dozens of commands into the command prompt. I did make sure that Windows Update had in fact updated itself before I even tried downloading any other updates. I have been working on this now for the last two days and have had no luck. Because Windows is not fully updated, I can't even update any of my other software because Windows is so thoroughly messed up. Please help! Even if I have to start the recovery process from scratch it would not be that big a deal just so long as I knew what to do to avoid this problem the next time.

    Satellite L755D-S5160
Some tips for you and others.
    1. Disable your anti-virus for this. It may be necessary to do it again after each reboot. Make sure the Windows Firewall is enabled.
    2. Don't run other applications. Only Internet Explorer should be running.
    3. Disable Automatic Update. Install only "Important" updates. Forget all the others for now. Never install drivers from Windows Update in any case.
    4. Choose at most 20 updates to install at a time.
    5. If you have difficulty with some, you may want to boot into Safe Mode with Networking.
6, Your model (Satellite L755D) came with Service Pack 1 already installed. Others who start with Window RTM need to install it first thing. There are 625 updates included in SP1.

  • Installing hp updates after upgrading to windows 7

I recently did a clean install (reformatted) of windows 7 on my touchsmart laptop, installed the updates off the windows 7 hp update page. However, the shortcut keys on the side of the touchscreen (the settings, mediasmart, screen rotate) no longer work. This may be due to me not installing the updates off the web page in the correct order?
I just started at the top of this page and worked my way down anyone know if these updates (specifically the hp mediasmart updates) need to be installed in a specific order?
or do I need to just open up specific programs and alter their startup settings?

ok I;ve given up for now heres a list of what tinkering Ive tried to no avail
    1) digitizer originally worked, showed up in device manager (n-trig digitizer, 2 digitizer hid compatible input, all 3 entries labelled under "digitizer")
    2) installed 2.59 win7 64bit n-trig multi touch pack got fatal error please restart and try again
    3) digitizer  no longer works, "unknown device" shows up in usb controllers
    4) flashed memory (turn off computer, hold on button in on position till computer turns off)
    5) digitizer still not working but now shows up in device manager under digitizer 3 entires
    6) installed 2.184 rev A win 7 64bit n-trig driver got fatal error
    7) restarted, unknown device in usb controllers again
    8) flashed memory again BUT only 1 entry in device manager under digitizer (n-trig_DIGITIZER, found HID-compliant consumer control device and n-trig multitouch HID device under Human Interface Devices
    9) trying to install either update (separately ) still get fatal error
    10) flashing memory no longer returns laptop to 3 digitizer entries stays in 1 digitizer 2 hid entires no matter what i try
so to summarise neither the 2.59 update or the slightly newer 2.184 rev A i found on the hp ftp will give touchscreen function.
N-trig's new driver update for multitouch has caused me to LOSE ALL TOUCHSCREEN FUNCTION

  • Secmon slow to update after resizing the window

I never noticed this in 2.1. In 2.2 SecMon, when I resize the security monitor window, it appears to hang. The resizing of the window takes a long time to update.
Can any one on the list please explain why?

If Security Monitor has been upgraded to 2.0 or 2.0.1 and a circular path has accidentally been configured between Security Monitor hosts, the system resources may become overwhelmed with updating the database with duplicate events. The system or database could become unuseable if the configuration is left uncorrected.
With Security Monitor 2.0 or 2.0.1, if a circular path is configured between Security Monitor hosts, a single event can be forwarded along the path and stored in each host's database many times. As a result, much of the system resources can become involved with receiving and sending this single event, and the database will be filled with copies of this single event.

  • What is the Flash Player auto-update behaviour for users without admin credentials on OSX and Windows?

    Hi
Does Flash Player auto-update have the ability to update systems when a user does not have administrator access on their device?
What will the results be if we enable Flash Player auto-update on OSX and Windows systems where:
    1.  Users are log in with accounts that DO NOT have administrator access; and
    2.  Internet access is granted via a proxy server, but only when a user with NO administrator credentials is logged in.
    Thanks in advance.

    Maria
So there's no way to completely turn off user notification AND allow background updates unless you use a locally hosted update server?  That's too bad.
Reading page 26 of the manual, I see there's an mms.cfg file that you can configure, with an option SilentAutoUpdateEnable, which is described on page 32:
    SilentAutoUpdateEnable
    SilentAutoUpdateEnable = [ 0, 1 ] (0 = false, 1 = true)
Availability: Flash Player 11.2 for Microsoft Windows, and Flash Player 11.3 for Macintosh
Enables a Flash Player update to install silently in the background with no user interaction. Installs both the ActiveX and plug-in players when appropriate. This type of update is called a Flash Player background update.
Standard users cannot disable background updates if they are enabled by an administrator.
Depending on the type of browser, if the user has a browser open at the time of an update, the browser might not use the updated player immediately. For more information, see "Performing a background update" on page 19.
The default value is 0 to disable background updates.
So you're saying that even if we enable this option (but don't configure a local server), users may still be prompted some or all of the time?

  • CS4 InDesign Auto update Links

I seem to be having a problem with CS4. When I click the edit original button the image is brought up, change done, Indesign updates. The problem is when I switch back to the image with out clicking edit original and come back to InDesign. It no longer updates with out me clicking update. Is there a prefrence I'm missing or is this something new where it no longer updates automaticlly. Do I just need to reinstall?

I think that it's safe to call a configuration conflict a 'bug'. It might not be a bug from within InDesign, but it's a bug. A programming error, if you will, or an oversight.
At any rate, in my case, the issue is with the image management plug-in we use. It's a conflict or configuration issue - or bug - with the add-on. If I leave it off, I can use Edit Original all day. If I turn it on, Edit Original does not auto-update after I close that first file. So for me, it's a matter of whether I want the ease of auto-updating after Edit Original, or quicker access to our image database. A bug caused by the one thing means I can't have both.
I don't think anyone was confused about how Edit Original is supposed to work. It just wasn't working right for HG. If I had to guess, I would say that HG had some sort of issue with his/her system or software setup that was screwing up the auto-update in CS4, and CS3/CS5 circumvent whatever bug caused that problem in the first place. Which means that the functionality was not removed from CS4, it was simply a bug. Or issue. Or conflict. Or configuration.

Visual Studio made changes for your whole system, if the file has been moved or deleted this error would occur.

  • Black screen after windows auto update

New laptop in use for 3 weeks.  After Windows auto update restart I get to splash screen and am able to enter Windows password to log onto desktop.  After successfully entering password I am not able to view my desktop; I get the black screen with cursor function; cursor disappears when moved within an inch of left or right of screen (seems to go behind something).  I believe I am at the desktop but just not able to view it, because I receive app popups on the black screen (need to update McAfee, etc).
In safe mode I restored to pre auto update date; manually installed all Windows updates;  worked fine until NEXT auto update, same problem.
Graphics Card:  Stock Intel HD Graphics
    Monitor:  Generic PnP
Why would it be fine with the manual update and not after auto update?
I do not have an external monitor to attach this laptop for diagnosis.  I have run windows partition checks and hard drive partition checks with no issues to resolve.
I did get an error message once when running a diagnosis (can't remember which) : Windows Update Error 0x80070490
No real luck finding anyway for me (the average Joe) to resolve this issue.
If this is a harddrive issue I don't want to keep pussyfooting around while my warranty window shrinks.
I have downloaded driver updates from HP, but cannot get the Synaptics Touchpad driver to download.  I don't think this is my issue though.
I am going to manually update all my drivers then manually update Windows.  We will see what happens on the next auto update.
Please advise if this is an issue I need to just give up on and return this laptop for replacement.  It seems like this is not a completely unheard of issue, but I'm shocked at what we are asked to do to attempt to resolve it.  Out of my depth.

    Hi @Justanothermom
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are having troubles with a black screen after an update. I am happy to help you with this.
Firstly, there is nothing wrong with modifiying your update settings. I was going to suggest it myself as I read through your post, and then saw you ask the question. Sometimes updates can have unintended results by the creator. With all the different combinations of  hardware, and the fact that updates come from different sources, it is one of those things that is hard to completely control.
Please see the following for how to make adjustments to your update settings.
Turn automatic updating on or off - windows.microsoft.com
Or if you know which update seems to be causing the issue you can take a look at this page:

  • HT1926 I received an ITunes and Quicktime update notice on my Windows 7 PC, from Apple this morning. During the update installation, RealPlayer installed. What gives? Why is Realplayer installing with the Apple software.

I received an ITunes and Quicktime update notice on my Windows 7 PC, from Apple this morning. During the update installation, RealPlayer installed. What gives? Why is Realplayer installing with the Apple software.

Thanks for the reply. I went back to check if there was a history in windows (Event Viewer) but could not locate it in Win7. The only updates that were in the Apple Updater window were the Quicktime and ITunes. Had I let the Realplayer continue on its own, it would have installed the Google Chrome and other apps. I let it finish installing and then removed the entire program. I do not remember checking or seeing anything saying that realplayer was being downloaded until after a reboot was requested from the ITunes Update Installer.
I just thought it was strange since I do not use Realplayer and have not downloaded any software for it.
I am on a corporate PC with a pretty thick firewall, but something may have slipped through.
    Thanks again for the assistance.

  • Windows 8 auto updates

I purchased an ACER laptop with windows 8 last week. I was previously using a laptop with Vista.
Last night when I decided to shut down, I noticed the message indicating updates were being downloaded and I should not shut down until completed. I've never been happy with auto updates. In my opinion if it's not broken don't fix it. I always think that
updates should be decided by the end user, after all they own the computer, not Windows. However, when I turned on the laptop this morning and after the updates had been installed I noticed the Internet Explorer icon had disappeared from the desk top/task
bar. Then appeared a screen telling me to chose which browser I wanted to install. Why should this appear when I already had a browser installed which worked? I had to find the Internet Explorer in the Program files on the C drive and recreate the pin to the
task bar. I'm 63 years old and not an expert but I did figure out how to do this. However, I have friends some older than me who wouldn't have had a clue how to do this and would have had to call for help to recover this. Why on earth did that windows update
    do this ludicrous update?

you can goto control panel --> Window Update --> Change setting (on left) --> Select Check the updates and let me choose weather to download and install them.
