RAC on SunCluster 3.2 Solaris 10

Hello all,
I am testing a new system build on two new servers with Solaris 10 running SunCluster 3.2. Oracle RAC and database 10.2.0.2.0 has been installed without any issue. Basic Oracle RAC tests were performed successfully. ie database balance, failover, failback. SunCluster was installed by Sun technicians and they didn´t get any issue installing it.
The system is still in testing but waiting to the outcome of next problem:
The system has four NICs each node 1 for public service, 1 for internal service (backups and monitor) and the last 2 for the cluster interconnect in an active/standby configuration. Everything works fine until we started to test the interconnect fail over. Whenever we unplug any of the interconnect cables the instance in node2 dies and this node reboot.
I have tried different combinations of configurations, even deleting all the private from the OCR to 'force' the RAC to use the public interface as interconnect and still getting the same behavior.
Has anyone faced a similar situation before???
If so could you please post examples of cluster configuration either RAC and SunCluster and how was this addressed and solved???
There is a SR currently open in support. Any successfully outcome I will let you know.
Thanks.

Here is another problem I am getting in the preproduction system.
I am testing to move the OCR to a new location and following the steps in the METALINK note 452486.1 I get an error on step 6:
# ./ocrconfig -replace ocr /dev/md/oracle-set/rdsk/d665
PROT-1: Failed to initialize ocrconfig
and the error reported in the $ORACLE_CRS_HOME/log/client/:
-bash-3.00$ more ocrconfig_27033.log
ocrconfig_27033.log: Permission denied
It seems some permissions on the raw partitions not being set correctly.
These are the current permissions assigned to vote (d601,d602 and d603) and ocr (d607 and d608) disks. The test I am trying to perform is to move the current OCR (d607) to a new raw partition (d665).

This text is comming from METALINK note 220970.1:
The Oracle Real Application Clusters install guide is correct. It describes the PRE INSTALL ownership/permission requirements for ocr and voting disk. This step is needed to make sure that the CRS install succeeds. Please don't use those values to determine what the ownership/permmission should be POST INSTALL. The root script will change the ownership/permission of ocr and voting disk as part of install. The POST INSTALL permissions will end up being : OCR - root:oinstall - 640 Voting Disk - oracle:oinstall - 644
From this note it seems to me permissions are correctly setup.
Can anyone clarify this???
Thanks.

  • Problem with Oracle 10g RAC VIP network setting at Solaris 9

    Dear All,
I have tried to set up a Oracle 10g RAC Release 2.
With OS solaris 9, and 2 nodes.
The nodes setting as the following:
    nodes 1:
    Public address: 172.16.0.121
Private address: 192.168.0.121, 192.168.1.121 (dual path for heart beat)
    nodes 2:
    Public address: 172.16.0.122
    Private address: 192.168.0.122, 192.168.1.122
And i have assigned two IP adress 172.16.0.131, 172.16.0.132 as the VIP address for the
    RAC.
And the following is the /etc/hosts file:
    root@shk01 # cat /etc/hosts
    # Internet host table
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    # public address
    172.16.0.121 shk01 loghost
    172.16.0.122 shk02
    # heart beat
    192.168.0.121 shk01-priv1
    192.168.1.121 shk01-priv2
    192.168.0.122 shk02-priv1
    192.168.1.122 shk02-priv2
    # VIP address
    172.16.1.131 vip-shk01
    172.16.1.132 vip-shk02
But when i run the command "$ ./runcluvfy.sh comp nodecon -n shk01,shk02 -verbose"
    it shows the error:
    ERROR:
Could not find a suitable set of interfaces for VIPs.
    Result: Node connectivity check failed.
I did try to add the VIP address on bge0:1, as i using bge0 for the public address.
Both nodes i did using the same interface name for it.
Anyone have idea for me to check out the error?
Also, I have other question about the raw device.
As there is option for setting for ASM or raw device. If choosing raw device, does it mean that it just need to
format the storage disk but without newfs it? And then the Oracle program will able to handle it?
    Thanks,
    Xentar

You don't seem to state categorically that you are using Solaris Cluster, so I'll assume it since this is mainly a forum about Solaris Cluster (and IMHO, Solaris Cluster with Clusterware is better than Clusterware on its own).
Clusterware has to see the same device names from all cluster nodes. This is why Solaris Cluster (SC) is a positive benefit over Clusterware because SC provides an automatically managed, consistent name space. Clusterware on its own forces you to manage either the symbolic links (or worse mknods) to create a consistent namespace!
So, given the SC consistent namespace you simple add the raw devices into the ASM configuration, i.e. /dev/did/rdsk/dXsY. If you are using Solaris Volume Manager, you would use /dev/md/<setname>/rdsk/dXXX and if you were using CVM/VxVM you would use /dev/vx/rdsk/<dg_name>/<dev_name>.
Of course, if you genuinely are using Clusterware on its own, then you have somewhat of a management issue! ... time to think about installing SC?

  • Recommendations - Oracle RAC 10g on Solaris 10 Containers Logical/Local..

    Dear Oracle Experts et all
I have a couple of questions for Oracle 10g RAC implementation on Solaris and seek your advice. we are attempting to implement oracle 10g RAC on Solaris OS and SPARC Platform.
1 We are wondering if Oracle 10g RAC could be implemented on Solaris Local/Logical Containers? I was assuming that Oracle will always link it self with OS binaries and Libraries while S/W installation and hence will need an OS image/Root Disk over which it could go. However, in containers, I assume we have a single solaris installation and configuration which will thus be shared to the containers which will be further configured in it. In such situations how does Oracle instalation proceed? Do I need to look at a scenario where, the global Container/Zone will have Oracle install and this image be shared across to zones/containers accordingly? If it is so, what all filesystems from OS will need to be shared across to these zones/containers?
Additionally, even if this approach is supported, is it a recommended approach? I am unsure about the stability and functionality of Oracle in such cases and am not able to completly conceptualize. However, I assume there could be certain items which needs to be approprietly taken care off. It will help if you could share observations from your experiences.
2 The idea of RAC we are looking at is to have multiple Oracle Installations on top of native clustering solution say veritas clusters/Sun Clusters. Do we still need to have Oracle Cluster solution Clusterware (ORACRS) on top of this to achieve Oracle Clustering? Will I be able to install Oracle as a standalone installation on top of native clustering solution say veritas clusters/Sun Clusters?
Our requirement is to have the above mentioned multiple Oracle installations spread across two (2) seperate H/W platforms, say Node A and Node B, and configure our Cluster Solution to behave as active-passive across Node A and Node B. In other words, I will configure Clustering Solution like VRTS/SunCluster in Active-Passive, then have 3 Oracle installations on Node A, another 3 on Node B. I will configure one database each for each of these Oracle S/W installation (with an idea not to have Clusterware between clustering solution VRTS/SunCluster and Oracle installation, if it works). Now I will run 3 databases thus on each of these nodes. If any downtime happens on any one of the nodes, say Node A, I will fail all oracle databases and S/W accordingly to the alternate available node, Node B in this case, using native clustering solution and I will want the database to behave as it was behaving earlier, on Node A. I am not sure though if I will be able to bring the database up on Node B when resources in OS perspective are failed over.
we want to use Oracle 10g RAC Release 2 EE on Solaris 10 OS latest/one before the latest release.
    Please share your thoughts.
    Regards!

1 We are wondering if Oracle 10g RAC could be implemented on Solaris Local/Logical Containers? My understanding is that RAC in a Zone (Container) is not supported by Oracle, and will not work anyway. Regardless of installation, RAC needs to do cluster level stuff about the cluster configuration, changing network addresses dynamically, and sending guaranteed messages over the cluster interconnect. None of this stuff can be done in a Local Zone in Solaris, because Local Zones have fewer permissions that the Global Zone. This is part of the design of Solaris Zones, and nothing to do with how Oracle RAC itself works on them.
This is all down to the security model of Zones, and Local Zones lack the ability to do certain things, to stop them reconfiguring themselves and impacting other Zones. Hence RAC cannot do dynamic cluster reconfiguration in a Local Zone, such as changing virtual network addresses when a node fails.
My understanding is that RAC just cannot work in a Local Zone. This was certainly true 5 years ago (mid 2005), and was a result of the inherent design and implementation of Zones in Solaris. Things may have changed, so check the Solaris documentation, and check if Oracle RAC is supported in Local Zones. However, as I said, this limitation was inherent in the design of Zones, so I do not see how Sun could possibly have changed it so that RAC would work in a Local Zone.
To me, your only option is the Global Zone. Which pretty much destroys the argument for having Zones on a Solaris system, unless you can host other non-Oracle application on the other Zones.
2 The idea of RAC we are looking at is to have multiple Oracle Installations on top of native clustering solution say veritas clusters/Sun Clusters. Do we still need to have Oracle Cluster solution Clusterware (ORACRS) on top of this to achieve Oracle Clustering? Will I be able to install Oracle as a standalone installation on top of native clustering solution say veritas clusters/Sun Clusters?I am not sure the term 'native' is correct. All 'Cluster' software is low level, and has components that run within the operating system. Whether this is Sun Cluster, Veritas Cluster Server, or Oracle Clusterware. They are all as 'native' to Solaris as each other. They all perform the same function for Oracle RAC around Cluster management - which nodes are members of the cluster, heartbeats between nodes, reliable fast message delivery, etc.
You only need one piece of Cluster software. So pick one and use it. If you use the Sun or Veritas cluster products, then you do not need the Oracle Clusterware software. But I would use it, because it is free (included with RAC), is from Oracle themselves and so guaranteed to work, is fully supported, and is one less third party product to deal with. Having an all Oracle software stack makes things simpler and more reliable, as far as I am concerned. You can be sure that Oracle will have fully tested RAC on their own Clusterware, and be able to replicate any issues in their own support environments.
Officially the Sun and Veritas products will work and are supported. But when you get a problem with your Cluster environment, who are you going to call? You really want to avoid "finger pointing" when you have a problem, with each vendor blaming the cause of the problem on another vendor. Using an all Oracle stack is simpler, and ensures Oracle will "own" all your support problems.
Also future upgrades between versions will be simpler, as Oracle will release all their software together, and have tested it together. When using third party Cluster software, you have to wait for all vendors to release new versions of their own software, and then wait again while it is tested against all the different third party software that runs on it. I have heard of customers stuck on old versions of certain cluster products, who cannot upgrade because there are no compatible combinations in the support matrices between the cluster product and Oracle database versions.
I will configure Clustering Solution like VRTS/SunCluster in Active-Passive, then have 3 Oracle installations on Node A, another 3 on Node B. As I said before, these 3 Oracle installations will actually all be on the same Global Zone, because RAC will not go into Local Zones.

  • Install ASM on Solaris RAC 10g

    Hello,
I installed CRS and database software on two nodes RAC 10.2.0.4 Solaris x86-64 5.10, latest updates for Solaris. I have no error with crs.
    Problems description:
    1) When I run DBCA to create ASM it fails to create it on the nodes, with error ORA-03135: connection lost contact.
    2) I see ORA-29702 into the logs (error occurred in Cluster Group Service operation
Cause: An unexpected error occurred while performing a CGS operation.
Action: Verify that the LMON process is still active. Also, check the Oracle LMON trace files for errors.)
    Question:
Do you think that the problem is that interface 10.0.0.21 node1-priv-fail2 is started? (see bellow bdump/alert_+ASM1.log).
This interface 10.0.0.21 node1-priv-fail2 is the one that frozens the prompt when I try ssh oracle@node1-priv-fail2 from node2?
Possible solution: I saw Metalink 283684.1 but don't know if/what to change in my interfaces.
    Details:
I think is something with the interfaces, but I don't know what.
    - One thing I noticed is that is not possible to ssh from node1 to node2-priv-fail2 (this I wad told is the private standby loopback insterface). The same is from node2 to node1-priv-fail2, it gives a frozen prompt.
    - in /etc/hosts on both nodes I have:

    Hi,
for a 10g RAC you need:
    - a host-IP for every node
    - a private IP for every node
    - a virtual IP for every node
Host-IP and Private IP must be assigned to both hosts and conenction between the hosts using either the host-IP or the private IP must be possible.
Is is possible to build the RAC and ASM only with the private IP without the public and the virtual IP, if yes how?The term "private" and "public" does not refer to public IPs. It refers to the fact "private" is only for communication between the nodes and public for communication between the client and database.
For a successful installation you need at least these three IPs on each system.
So for instance your public IPs reside in the network 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 and your private interconnect network can be 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0. Both networks consists of private (i.e. non-routeable) IPs.

  • Oracle RAC 10g on Solaris 10 in a non-global zone

I need to run Oracle RAC 10g on Solaris 10 in a non-global zone as I must cap the CPUs used for Oracle licensing limitations. My question is a simple one, but one for which I'm getting conflicting information depending upon whom I ask.
If I want to run RAC in a non-global zone on two nodes, does this require the use of Solaris Cluster?
I know there are good reasons to use Solaris Cluster, but the company for which I work cannot afford the additional expense of Solaris Cluster at this time. Is it possible to run Oracle RAC 10g in a capped container without Solaris Cluster or is Solaris Cluster absolutely required?
Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.

AFAIK, Oracle 10g RAC is not supported in solaris containers.
It is however supported in Solaris zone clusters...in order to use it, you would have to use Sun Cluster 3.2 (iinm).

  • Installing suncluster in vmware x86

    Hi,
Im new to suncluster. Plz advice me the following...
I have two solaris10-x86 OS installed in vmware in my laptop. Is it possible to install & configure suncluster in two solaris 10 OS.
    thanks in advance.

"pm_tickdelay" problem isn't present in VmWare. Problem is lack of the CPU power/scheduling of real-time suncluster's processes/modules which get out of sync.
I'm using 4CPU old Xeon machine to play with 2 instances of Solaris and Nevada (each VM gets 2 processes). It works even when i give only 1 CPU per Solaris Cluster VM. So better get deddicated SMP machine(for example dualcore) then install pure Vmware Server on it some Linux distro without X11 server. Connect to it remotely via Vmware Console - this way Vmware machine has much more free cycles to serve VMs. Try to contact Matthias Pfutzner for 32 bit kernel modules for x86 (of course no support and NDA).
Vmware Server can also emulate storage (with SCSI reservations, I've played only with 2-node emulated SCSI clusters, not sure whether it supports PGR-3). I can say only that vmware + sun cluster is very time consuming and frustrating, but worth trying. On the other hand you can setup third note as SunCluster Quorum Server insted of using SCSI as a quorum (example on your workstation, just install another Vmware on it and install Solaris).
The worst combination is the iSCSI+Sun Cluster which should to work on U4. Currently in U3 there is problem/kernel panic while offlining LUNs (it happen at random times). I've gave up on this one, as the only fix was tagged as "no-s10u4". Brief testing showed that quroum seemed to work on Solaris's iSCSI target using SCSI-2 reservations, but then you are limited to max 2 nodes only. I tryied also Solaris Cluster Express(based on Nevada sixty-something) for Oracle RAC on iSCSI and failed on another bug (metainit not found).
Big fat warning: iSCSI with sun cluster is currently NOT supported in any way and all of this testing was experimental/proof-of-concept.
Btw: I haven't tried U4 yet. Keep in mind that I can have outdated knowledge from 2 weeks ago.

  • Encountered ora-29701 during Sun Cluster for Oracle RAC 9.2.0.7 startup (UR

    Hi all,
Need some help from all out there
In our Sun Cluster 3.1 Data Service for Oracle RAC 9.2.0.7 (Solaris 9) configuration, my team had encountered
ora-29701 *Unable to connect to Cluster Manager*
during the startup of the Oracle RAC database instances on the Oracle RAC Server resources.
We tried the attached workaround by Oracle. This workaround works well for the 1^st time but it doesn’t work anymore when the server is rebooted.
Kindly help me to check whether anyone encounter the same problem as the above and able to resolve. Thanks.
    Bug No. 4262155
    Filed 25-MAR-2005 Updated 11-APR-2005
Product Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition Product Version 9.2.0.6.0
    Platform Linux x86
    Platform Version 2.4.21-9.0.1
    Database Version 9.2.0.6.0
    Affects Platforms Port-Specific
    Severity Severe Loss of Service
Status Not a Bug. To Filer
    Base Bug N/A
Fixed in Product Version No Data
    Problem statement:
ORA-29701 DURING DATABASE CREATION AFTER APPLYING 9.2.0.6 PATCHSET
    *** 03/25/05 07:32 am ***
    TAR:
    PROBLEM:
Customer applied 9.2.0.6 patchset over 9.2.0.4 patchset.
While creating the database, customer receives following error:
ORA-29701: unable to connect to Cluster Manager
However, if customer goes from 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.5 -> 9.2.0.6, the problem does not occur.
    DIAGNOSTIC ANALYSIS:
It seems that the problem is with libskgxn9.so shared library.
    For 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.5 -> 9.2.0.6, the install log shows the following:
    installActions2005-03-22_03-44-42PM.log:,
    [libskgxn9.so->%ORACLE_HOME%/lib/libskgxn9.so 7933 plats=1=>[46]langs=1=> en,fr,ar,bn,pt_BR,bg,fr_CA,ca,hr,cs,da,nl,ar_EG,en_GB,et,fi,de,el,iw,hu,is,in, it,ja,ko,es,lv,lt,ms,es_MX,no,pl,pt,ro,ru,zh_CN,sk,sl,es_ES,sv,th,zh_TW, tr,uk,vi]]
    installActions2005-03-22_04-13-03PM.log:, [libcmdll.so ->%ORACLE_HOME%/lib/libskgxn9.so 64274 plats=1=>[46] langs=-554696704=>[en]]
    For 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.6, install log shows:
    installActions2005-03-22_04-13-03PM.log:, [libcmdll.so ->%ORACLE_HOME%/lib/libskgxn9.so 64274 plats=1=>[46] langs=-554696704=>[en]] does not exist.
This means that while patching from 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.5, Installer copies the libcmdll.so library into libskgxn9.so, while patching from 9.2.0.4 -> 9.2.0.6 does not.
ORACM is located in /app/oracle/ORACM which is different than ORACLE_HOME in customer's environment.
    WORKAROUND:
Customer is using the following workaround:
    cd $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib make -f ins_rdbms.mk rac_on ioracle ipc_udp

  • Datapump in RAC

    Hi,
    I have a 2 nodes RAC 11.2g installation on Solaris 10.
    I don't use Cluster Solaris.
I would like to plan to run, every night, a full datapump for my database.
I want an idea about this, because I don't want to put in crontab the datapump
only on one node and I would like that in case of a temporary down of a node the datapump
    should run on the other.
    I'm open to all suggestions...
I can use ASM to store datapump file (not log files i know this),
I can create a resource in crs... so please tell me something
    Thanks in advance
    c.

    I already use rman.
We need datapump for different reasons...
for example we don't want to use flashback and other (imho) amazing solutions for
restore single tables or singles schema and because often we have to migrate
schema or table from production to test environment.
    Thanks
