RAM upgrade MBP 7.1 fail. Only stock RAM works. Logic board problem?
pulling my hair out here.
I have recently uprgraded my mid 2010 mbp to mountain lion and thought i would upgrade as much as i could but ran straight into frustration town.
after a full day trying 8 different types and amounts of RAM, my MBP will only boot to a useable state with the stock ram it came with.
I made an appointment with a 'genius' at the apple store (the annoyance of having to call a condescending punk a genius is just too much to handle) and had said 'genius' disappear with my mbp for a half hour or so. Once he returns he tells me it is logic board problem and 'boy you aren't going to like the price of the repair'. F'n' right, genius!
My question is this:
would a faulty logic board allow the stock ram to work but NOTHING else?
secondary question: anyone else notice a slowing down of operations with mountain lion?
In your original post I got the impression that your MBP worked with the original RAM. Apparently that was a misconception on my part. My suggestions are to first run an Apple Hardware Test and see what clues, if any it offers:

RAM Slot / Logic Board Failure
Hello.
I tried to upgrade my MBP 2.16GHz (sept 2006) from the original 1GB RAM (DDR2 667Mhz) by 2GB (new total 3GB) using the second slot that was still free, but the computer did not reboot after doing so.
After trying out different combinations including placing only the original 1GB into the second slot (no rebooting either) I placed the new 2GB into the first slot and it now workes fine there. By that I have got at least 1GB more than before but I don't know what may have happened to the second slot and if there is a way to fix it, so I could also use the old 1GB (the max. RAM for this machine is 3GB I was told)
The only possible answer seems to be that the logic board is damaged.
Has anybody experienced anything similar or knows what to do?

As for failure of RAM slots, any sorts of misbehavior of the system may be due to logicboard issues with the RAM. You could get kernel panics, which can result in data loss, or further damage to the file system which you have to periodically repair. The speed sometimes may be negatively affected, but data loss issues are more paramount. Backup frequently!

2010 MBP 13.3 Lags and Fan on High Logic Board?
Hello Everyone,
I recently was given a 2010 Macbook Pro 2.4 13.3. When I got it the computer lagged really bad, and the fan is stuck on high. With that and the backlight for the keyboard not lit, I suspected the logic board but when I went to disk utility I could not see the hard drive and it would not show any partitions. I replaced the hard drive and booted the computer in internet recovery and the same thing happens, when it is on during internet recovery, when you are selecting the wireless router the mouse works great and it is super fast, but as soon as it begins to load and start the internet recovery it starts lagging really bad.
One weird thing I noticed that its doing was during one of the installation process the fans slowed down to normal for about 30 seconds. During this time the mouse did not lag and the thing was moving quite quickly. But every time I attempt to reinstall OSX it says it was not able to install the program because of a missing file, and quits.
So no I can't reinstall anything. the keyboard light is out and the fans on high. I tried SMC reset and NVRAM and neither made a difference. So I took the logic board out, cleaned it super good, shows no signs of liquid damage or corrosion. Reinstalled and still the same issues.
I guess the long story question here is do you think its a logic board going bad? I am going to try and reboot with an individual stick of ram to see if that makes a difference but I feel the combination of the lights out and the fan on high tends to make me think that the board is not happy.
Any thoughts, and if you think its a board, any suggestions where to repair or replace for the best price. For a free MBP I am not afraid to spend a few bucks to add this to my arsenal of macs.

Get files from old MBP to new MBP when the old one has suffered a Logic Board failure
Recently, my 2009 unibody MacBook Pro died. Logic board failure, I am told. It is out of warranty, and replacing the Logic Board would cost a grand. It had some other issues too, so I figured upgrading to a brand new system would be the best idea. So, I am going to purchase a brand new one within the next few days. My question is this: How to I get the files from my old MBP (I NEED them, plain and simple) to the new one once I get it? Should I take out the harddrive from the old one and connect it via a SATA>USB cable and connect it to the new one? Can anyone shed any light on this? It will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Yep, all you need is a IDE/SATA to USB adapter for about $20 online at OtherWorld Computing, NewEgg and other online computer sites like Amazon etc.
You can find the screwdriver or other torx driver at iFixit or OtherWorld, just look for your Mac model or just be rough with it and drill out the screws.
You can choose to get a enclosue and use the drive as a external drive, it will cost more naturally, but for a few bucks more though you can get a brand new external drive and likely twice the capacity.
Some external drives can't be Carbon Copy Cloner and option booted from, so perhaps a adapter is best. (don't clone a OS from another Mac to your new Mac)
Setup:
When you set up the new Lion Mac, name the hard drive the same name as the external drive, also setup the same user name as the old Mac had. Software Update.
Install all your known third party programs from fresh sources as many as possible.
The last thing you do is connect the old Mac drive, transfer all the files from the user folders right back into their respective folders on the new drive (Music, Pictures, Documents etc) Not User/Library.
Open all your programs like iTunes and iPhoto and it will update for your files, then go through the folders and delete what you don't want.
Don't use migration or setup assitant, it's a blind copy, includes programs you can't use anymore and other headaches.
If you do things in the order I specify, your drive will be optimized and run fast for a decent amount of time.
If Lion act's glitchy, Carbon Copy Cloner to a new HFS+ Journaled (Disk Utility) and then hold Command R to get into Lion Recovery, Zero Erase the OS X Lion partition and then option boot from the Lion clone and reverse clone onto the OS X Lion partition on the internal.
You can also reinstall Lion on top of the factory Lion from the Recovery Partition.

G4 MDD Quandary-No pattern to freezes-is it ram or logic board
Ok, I refuse to give up on this money wasting project. Original post is at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2209693&tstart=0. Anyway, replaced heat sink and CPU to get it to boot and indeed it does, flawlessly. I thought it was finally fixed but I still get freezes. I have and have tried every combination of ram swapping and the freezes still do not make sense. It is not heat related as I have temp moinitor installed and the temp window on screen after the freeze shows normal operating temperatures. Here is the conundrum. it boots and runs for days and then it freezes. During these tests I am not using the computer-just letting it run unattended. I thought two of the dimms were bad since they caused it to freeze more quickly (about 6 hours). I thought maybe the slots were bad since sometimes with those sticks in I would get kernal panic freeze. So I would run it with one 512k dimm, in the fourth slot (dimm #3 (to keep it away from the heat sink) and it will run for days before freezing. Runs the same way in the other slots. Battery is good and keeps current settings. Apple tech tool indicates everything is fine. So then, do I replace the logic board or is it a complete lost cause? I would assume a cracked soldering, or faulting capacitor that at some point heats to failure, even though it might take days.
Vernon, I appreciate your reply but I don't think it addresses the problem I am experiencing. The internal drive I am booting from is about a year old and was simply a backup drive to the main drive that was in the computer before I was experiencing the trouble. This back up drive had a clean install of the OS at the time. I pulled the main drive from it and put it in an older G4 which is what I am typing on now. Quite frankly the G4 MDD is the worst Mac I have ever owned. This was the lemon that they did the free power supply swaps on about 3 months after it came out. Incidentally the replacement power supply died and I replaced that last spring. They do have heat problems because of an aesthetically unique but practically flawed design and it is a 1.25 dual adding to the burn. Money is not an issue. My history with Mac started with the MacPlus, MacSE, Quadra 950 running an early Avid, 9500 running an Avid Media Composer, G4, G4, G5, 15" MacBook and I am in the decision stage between a 4 or 8 core to run FCP. I have a 30" cinema display, 2 24" Sony GDW F900 monitors, Aja Io, and 2T Xserve raid. I junked the 950 and the 9500 is next to go to the dump along with 6 Avid SCSI drives. I kept my MacSE and at times play Dark Castle on it. Incidentally I ran a Radius 2-page grayscale monitor on that for 6 years before I abandoned desktop publishing with Pagemaker and Quark and went full time with video production. Just sharing my history since you did yours. But, getting back to the problem, I created the new user account per Allan's recommendation, put all the DIMMS in and it has been running for a few hours now. The reason I do not think it is software related is that the freezes are random and illogical, leading me to believe that it is in fact a problem with the logic board and also because that is the last fix in the Apple tech troubleshooting pathway after pram, batteries, ram, heat sink and CPU. It has just become something I want to conquer because I can't let the machine win. Too much tech in my life I guess.

MBP A1260 (Early 2008): Won't start, black screen, continuously lit LED - bad logic board?
Hello everyone!
I'm having a rather serious issue with my MBP A1260 (early 2008) running the latest version of OSX 10.5. This is what happens (or doesn't happen) when I start it:
Usual start-up sounds (fans, HDD, Superdrive)
No chime at startup
Blank screen (I even can't see anything if I hold it against a light source)
The LED is on continuously. Bright at first, then after a second only dim
No backlight of the screen, no keyboard lighting
No reaction to pressing the volume or brightness keys, even after waiting for a while (the OS isn't password protected)
I tried a couple things and googled for a bit. This is what I've tried so far:
Plug in an external monitor - no signal
Removed the battery, used an old battery (which doesn't hold too much power anymore, but is working) - nothing
Restarted with alt-key pressed to bring up the bootcamp menu - nothing
Reset PRAM and NVRAM (P+R+opt+cmd at startup) - nothing
Reset SMC - nothing
Removed all RAM - nothing
Tried all combinations of RAM modules and RAM banks individually - nothing
As you can see, I've already tried quite a bit to get my computer back up, but there's been no success so far. As far as I can tell, this thing's logic board is broken, which would be a prohibitively expensive repair at about 600€ to 700€. I know the logic board is basically the whole computer, but that's an insane amount of cash for a four year old computer.
Do you wise people have any other ideas how to get this thing running again?
If not, I can only come up with three options:
Sell the MBP on ebay as broken
Buy another A1260 with a working logic board and exchange it or
Pay for the insanely expensive repair
Do you have other ideas?
Luckily, I have another early 2011 MBP, which I'm using right now. But to be honest, it may be the last mac I ever own.
Anyways, I'm thankful for all responses. I promise to keep you updated if I get the machine running again.Any ideas?

Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 Problems / Failed Logic Board?
Okay, it seems that many other people are having problems with the Power Mac G5. All I can really say to Apple is that I love Macintosh and the Power Mac G5 has been the greatest computer I have ever owned. It seems that the logic board is the main issue for most people. Maybe Apple still needs to work out some bugs, but one thing for sure is that it would really be nice if there were no more produced like this and that everyone gets their problems solved without going through it again.
Well, my G5 stopped working about a month ago. I've been really lonely and sad too... It started that the computer would randomly start, meaning that I would have to power it up and down several times until it randomly start. Other people have had these issues too. And after about 2 days of doing this it froze and now it refuses to start. I've done everything I possibly can without being a technician. I have two video cards and switching them dosen't help, my monitor works, and when I take out the ram there's no beeping. No power to keyboard or mouse, can't reset firmware, or reinstall OS or run hardware test. I reset PMU, but still no luck. I've tested both my Superdrive and Hard Drive. They both work. I have a friend with a G5 and I put my Hard Drive in and it booted up perfectly.
Fans are functional, they speed up after about five minutes with no chime at start up. Which the chime is supposed to indicate a hardware failure. My only clues are the logic board and the processors, possibly the power board. Though it seems to be the logic board most of the time. The big thing is, does Apple know what's causing this to happen to Apple fans and costumers?
I saw an earlier post with a guy who bought the same G5 a year and a half ago with three year warranty and had the logic board replaced-three times already!!!
Unfortunately my G5 is out of warranty. I bought it from CompUSA and someone had boughten it and decided to return, unused still. They gave me a the 3-year warranty extension program, but I could never activate it. I've had the computer about a year and a half myself. I bought it early June last year June 2004. But this was right before the new line-up came out. So it's the November 2003 model. It's ecspecially depressing that a week or two later I could of gotten it for $500 dollars cheaper and a newer model. Not to also mention the beautiful new Apple Cinema Displays that match the G5. Though I doubt that Apple with have any sympathy for me for not waiting a little longer. I love my G5 and I just want to hear the chime and watch my 20" Apple ADC Display turn on. I don't live anywhere close the any Apple Stores to take it in for diagnostics.
So I'm really in a tunnel of doom. I'm thinking of buying the logic board from mac-pro.com for $700. I heard Apple wants a $1000, but I don't know. Though driving it in to the Apple store isn't gonna be easy for me. Even so, I'm afraid of how costly it will be. I need to know what's defective and needs replacement more than anything. I only wish there was some way I could activate my 3-year warranty extension program. Well, I suppose that's really enough of my pitiful crying.

My computer was freezing up, not booting up, locking on the blue page, static looking when trying to boot up, etc. I took it in to the Apple Store yesterday, and they will be replacing the board within the next 2 weeks. Although my have an extended warrenty, the replacement program is avaliable for certain first generation iMac G5 models that were sold between approximatrely September 2004 and June 2005 freaturing 17- and 20-inch displays with 1.6GHz and 1.8Ghz processors.
If Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider determines that your iMac G5 computer is eligible as part of the program, the repair will be covered by Apple for up to two years from the original date of purchase even if your iMac G5 is out of warrenty. This is a worldwide Apple program.
It's worth looking up the article, it list the serial number ranges that apply. Worth a look! -
I just dropped off my MBP 2010. They said it was a logic board.
Symptoms : Fan running high. Beach ball , jerky cursor, very slow response time
I zapped the PRAM about a month ago. When some of the symptoms started. It worked for a while ...
Could the new OS download have anything to do with this? I have been using Apples since 1996 and hope Apple will rectify this issue if there is a fault in the manufacturing side or software .
No Appplecare cost 280 flat fee...You got an excellent price - I try to let as many people that I can know of Apple's flat-rate repair policy. They could have been unscrupulous and charge you nearly $800.
I doubt that any software download could have caused logic board failure - I've never heard of it occurring. Faulty logic boards just turn up from time to time. Sometimes the symptoms can go unnoticed for years, sometimes they just fail at any given moment. Thank goodness, it's not pandemic around the Mac community.
Once you get your logic board replaced, I think that you'll be pleased. And you did get a great deal on it.

Dear all,
I am writing to ask for your help. My MBP 13 laptop was dead due to the logic board failure diagnosed by the apple authorized technician.
He determined that the logic board is not properly providing voltage and connected multiple chargers but still won't stay powered on. The cost of a logic board is $426 and $100 for labor.
Worst thing is, my laptop is out of the warranty...my original warranty expired just a week ago and I did not extend it since I had thought I had purchased it in August last year and I still have time to do this later.
What shall I do now?
Thank you very much for your kind attention.For future reference, seeing as Apple have agreed to cover the repair cost, all goods sold have an certain life expectancy and should be 'fit for service' for that period. For most computers its about 6 years.
I've recently needed a logic board replacement and Apple refused to do the repair free of charge because I was out of warranty (my iMac is over 3 1/2 years old). I got in touch with Trading Standards who agreed that according to consumer law 1979 I should expect my iMac to be working. Trading Standards provided me with letter templates to send not only to Apple (I purchased mine directly from them, if you purchased it elsewhere then your claim would be with the retailer), but also my credit card company as I used my card to make the purchase.
After a number of letters, emails and phone calls I now have a fully repaired iMac without any cost to myself.
It may take a little while (about 3 months for mine) but it's worth chasing. Trading Stadards were very helpful. They even checked out the T&Cs for me because Apple are based in Ireland so may not have been bound by UK law but it states in their T&Cs that they are. -

I wanted to buy the Retina Base model. Though it is very recently launched and there is a big risk buying it because they say it is unrepairable and unfixable as 'everything is glued into the motherboard' dialogue scares me. I am opting for Macbook Pro 15,2.6 Ghz,8GB RAM. Buying it for the sole purpose of editing(audio, video, photos).I need something which is fast along with a good screen size. My original decision was to buy the 17inch but after the launch of Retina and the upgraded 15 inch, I am only looking forward to the upgraded models. Many say 13 inch is fast, but it features a dual core with a maximum of 2.9Ghz clockspeed. I on the other hand want a quad core i7 with good upgradability options and a good screen size. The 13 inch may be a favorite for many, but I want nothing less than a 15 inch. One good option I get with non Retina 15 is its upgradability, while many say Retina MBP 15 can be made upgradable in future but that time is yet to come and by the time the whole web becomes ‘retina friendly’ and all applications supporting its 2880X1800 resolution, I may end up waiting only. Yes the picture quality remains unbeatable when compared to Retina Pro and it will always be. Though friends, I am a student, I want something which is fast, can run almost anything and future dependable. Retina Mac book Pro in India is 2799 USD - Base model. I cannot pay that amount just for the screen. As far as speed is concerned, I plan to get an OWC SSD and a 16 GB OWC RAM in the future resulting in greater speed when comparing the configuration with Retina 15.That problem is solved.
My problem here is this: The web is filled with reviews and videos of Retina Macbook Pro and the upgraded Macbook Pro 15 is just no where, if you even find a few videos, they only feature unboxing videos of Macbook pro 15 (i7-2.3Ghz-4GB-500GB-500MB Nvidea).Other videos compare the 2.3ghz model with Retina 15 pro. They are not elaborate like the 15 Retina Pro reviews.
I want to know about the real performance, potential, pros, cons of Macbook Pro 15 (i7 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB 1GB Nvidea graphics).
So my question to you is what is your opinion on the 15 inch non retina ? HOW FAST do you think is the new upgraded 15inch non retina i7-2.6Ghz-8GB-750GB model really is ?I have read on many mac forums and seen on a particular youtube video that 15inch 2.3Ghz model takes an alarming 40 seconds to start because of traditional hard drive ! A normal DELL Inspiron starts at 15 secs max with i3+4 GB RAM and this particularly confuses me about the whole quad core processing and stuff and speed when running applications like C6,FCP,Lightroom etc is to be determined in regard to the model I want to buy.

If SSD (quite expensive) it will certainly be as fast. One option is to get the smallest HD they have and with the Non Retina you can upgrade the HD to an SSD later or now but save a little money. Check with iFixit or OWC for instructions. HD's do take longer to start up and load, but once open, the processor and video work just the same as on the Retina model. The SSD speed is nice, but really not critical. So you have to wait a minute for your computer to boot up. The other big question is you need to find out if the non-retina model will take 16GB of ram. According to OWC's site, it will, 16GB for 150USD. Once you get programs open and resident in ram, everything will fly.

I've encountered issue during installation of SP1 to SQL Server 2012. After upgrade I'm getting this error in Event Log:
Script level upgrade for database 'master' failed because upgrade step 'msdb110_upgrade.sql' encountered error 537, state 3, severity 16. This is a serious error condition which might interfere with regular operation and the database will be taken offline.
If the error happened during upgrade of the 'master' database, it will prevent the entire SQL Server instance from starting. Examine the previous errorlog entries for errors, take the appropriate corrective actions and re-start the database so that the script
upgrade steps run to completion.
Can someone point me direction how I can fix it? This is a production server and currently only way to make it working is to use T902 flag in SQL Server startup params. I've found some suggestions to check Data path if it exists but it does so this is not
the issue here. Any ideas?

Before sending my message I've searched update script for "FROM master.sys.master_files" and I found script which you are showing me. I've made some digging and when I runned:
SELECT physical_name
FROM master.sys.master_files
WHERE (name = N'master')
it returned also path to one my customers database name which has filename set correctly but it's Logical DB name is master and mastlog. I'm running shared hosting company and I allow my customers to restore their DBs from .bak files but I have no idea why
this customers logical name is set to master and mastlog. Probably when I change this names update script will work as it should. On the other hand in my opinion there should be some kind of fail safe mechanism for situations like this one.
EDIT: After changing logical name for DB and log for mentioned DB your script runned fine so probably now when I remove T902 flag and restart my SQL Server update will run correctly. Big thanks for resolving this issue. -

SSIS 2012 ETL is failing only at one server (No BIDS) but running successfully from BIDS on different sever . In this ETL, I have used Stored Procedure in OLEDB Source.
Note: I have couple of ETLs developed in 2005 using same logic and upgraded to 2012, working perfectly.
I am getting Error Message:

I tried below word around and found It is working perfectly.
I loaded data into a table (dbo.TEMP) using Stored procedure and then I used this dbo.TEMP table in OLEDB source and then found no issue.

Yes you are right. At one sever where I was getting error, DateTime was in USA format and Where It was running successfully was in AUS format.
I changed from USA to AUS and I did another changes:

heartfelt thanks for your excellent answers.Have you gone to the Photoshop Help menu and selected Help > Activate... You need an internet connection to do this. All you have to do is follow the steps.
What is activation? Photoshop used to be unlocked with a serial number only. However software pirates simply passed the numbers around to unlock multiple copies without paying for the license.
As of Photoshop CS3, activation requires a connection to a remote server that validates the machine it was installed on on order to launch Photoshop. You are allowed to activate on two computers. Any change in hardware means you have re-activate.
We are basically volunteers not Adobe employees. If you cannot activate your copy as instructed, call customer service and they can help you by resetting the activations.

Logic board and third party ram upgrade on Macbook
I bought a new macbook about a month ago and the only change i made to it was to install third party ram myself. The logic board broke on Friday. Apple was kind of enough to replace the logicboard for free even though I had third party ram in there which they said violated the warranty. I called other world computing where I bought the ram and they said there was no way the ram could be the cause of the logicboard failure even if I installed the ram wrong. Is this true?
My real question is what do I do now for upgrading my ram. Do I buy mac ram and pay the extra money or can I use third party ram and not have to worry about it causing damage to my system? Whatever the resolution I don't want to void the warranty in any way.*"which they said violated the warranty."*
What they told you there is a load of crap. Installing RAM does not void the warranty. Even the RAM that Apple installs is from a third party.

Why does file sharing with OS 10.8.3 fail only in one direction?
I'm having trouble getting file sharing to work in both directions.
I have a late 2012 Macmini and an early 2013 MBP, both running OS 10.8.3.
I can get my mini to connect to the MBP, access the public folders, and even share screen.
Going the other way from the MBP, the connection fails.
Taking cues from all the other discussions of the question, I have created an additional
administrator on the MBP and given him sharing only privileges on the mini. Booting in
Safe mode works fine on the MBP. And, I deleted preference lists related to sharing and security
on both machines.
I have verified both HDs, and repaired all permissions with Disk utility.
Although the name of the mini shows up in the sidebar of the MBP, neither admin user on the MBP
succeeds in connecting to the mini. It's always the same message - check the IP, etc.
I'm wondering if I can use Time Machine to back up the one "real" home folder on the MBP,
then completely rebuild the user list on the MBP, restore the home folder from TM, and clear things up that way.
I've been fooling with this since long before the 10.8.3 update. After that update, it frequently failed in either direction
until I started in on it again this morning and got the mini-to-MBP link to work.
Any help will be very greatly appreciated!!

I can connect the mini to my wife's AirBook and share her screen.
I can connect via wired connection to a USB printer, as well as to a wireless printer
on our network.
The firewalls on both machines are OFF.
That gave me an idea to connect the two laptops.
I can connect the AirBook to the MBP, but to share screen I must use the
"ask permission" radio button.
I can connect the MBP to the AirBook and access wife's public folder.
Screen sharing option does not come up.
Her firewall is also off.
