Ramdisk issue in Solaris 10

When I try to create a ramdisk I get the following error;
# ramdiskadm -a disk1 4g
ramdiskadm: couldn't create ramdisk "disk1": Resource temporarily unavailable
Has anyone seen this and how it was resolved.?
Thanks in advance
Ali

  • Installation Issues on Solaris 10

    Hi all,
I've tried several times to install Sun Java Platform Application Suite on Solaris 10, and each time after the installation finished, it shows the same issues. I'll attach the errant installation summary file and the critical part of the install log below.
If someone can point me in the right directiron or tell me where else to look for more details on what might be wrong. I'd appreciate it.

    Hi Philippe,
    Thanks for your reply.
I installed the whole suite including directory server in a non-defaut install directory. I am wondering if changing install directory will cause issues.

  • Sendmail issue on Solaris 10 system...

I have two systems running Solaris 10 that are having sendmail issues. If mail messages like the one below gets bounced back or if someone replies to it, the message will go to [email protected], and that should not happen. I believe I configured these systems the same way as the others and they seem to be fine. I have reconfigured the sendmail on the problems systems and I am still seeing messages going to [email protected] Below is what our reports should be sending to us and below that is what we should not be sending. How do I fix this problem? Can someone help, please. Thanks.

So far it is happening for root. What do you suggest I do to fix it?
Below is an example of what I have been seeing. If you look at "To", you will see where the problem is..."relay" should not be there. The host name should not be there either as the masquerading configuration is set up. Something is causing "relay" to appear and I cant seem to find what it is.

    Hi,
I wanted to send mails from my solaris box. Below is the step i used
    # svcs | grep mail
    # svcadm enable smtp
    # svcs | grep mail
    online 14:24:58 svc:/network/smtp:sendmail
    # mail -s "HELLO" [email protected]
Nothing happens after this... i tried with different mail id's and different mail servers but all failed.
can someone help me in troubleshooting this issue?
    Regards,
    Ashok Kumar.G

    Hi Chris & Darren,
Thanks for your updates. Currently i have resolved the issue and i am able to send mail to gmail & yahoo accounts. The issue was with my domain name present in /etc/hosts file and settings in /etc/nsswitch.conf file.
But i am unable to send any mail's to my company's POP3 mail server email accounts.

  • German character set issues on Solaris

    Hi,
I am facing an issue with German character settings with my Java application on a solaris box.
When I run my application on the box, and I pass an input file with German special characters they get converted as ?. However, other normal English characters are formed properly.
When I run the same application on another Solaris box with a different JRE, the German characters are formed properly.
I understand that there is a difference in the archiecture between the 2 boxes ie.e
    64 bit SPARC machine v/s 32 bit x86 machine
    the JRE
    1.4.2_03(64bit) v/s 1.4.1_01
I am tryinbg to evaludate further differences between the 2 environments to pinpoint the issue, and get this resolved on the 1st box.
Can anyone provide me any inputs?
    Lavin

When you read the file, please point out what character set using. For example:
    FileInputStream fstream = new FileInputStream(url.getFile());
    DataInputStream in = new DataInputStream(fstream);
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(in, Charset.forName("ISO-8859-1")));
    br.readLine();
This link possibly can help you.

  • Mutex locking issue on Solaris 10

We are having a problem with mutex locking.
On one scenario we are running our application
    On a v245 running Solaris 10 6/06 update 2 patch 118833-24
    On our 5120 we are running Solaris 10 8/07 update 4patch 137111-05.
Our application creates several thousand simultaneous mutex inits (pthread_mutex_init). Approx 12 are locked at any one time. Our problem is after several min the application fails because the mutex destroy does not appear to destroy the mutex. This is true only on our 5120 but not on our v245. As a result our application runs fine on the v245 but fails quickly on the 5120.
Do you have any knowledge of why this might be happening?
Any help you can provide in this will be greatly appreciated.
If this is not the right group to post this messages please let me know.
    Thanks!

How many threads do you have performing these mutex operations? The 5120 probably runs a lot more concurrent threads than the v245 does, so it's likely you're running into a race condition that's only apparent when the number of concurrent threads is large enough.
What kind of mutexes are they? Recursive, process-shared, "normal"? Where are they located? Dynamically-allocated heap memory, local stack variables, mmap()'d memory? If they're recursive or "normal" mutexes in heap memory, you've most likely got a race condition in your application, because the source code at opensolaris.org for pthread_mutex_destroy() is pretty much nothing but "memset( &mutex, 0, sizeof( mutex ) )" for normal mutexes. It's hard to imagine how that could fail.
You can use the race-condition tools that are part of Sun Studio 12 or another memory-checking application such as Purify to find out where your error may be. Given the timing issues apparently involved, those are probably your best options. The overhead of tools such as watchmalloc or even the run-time memory checker in Sun Studio may be too much and mask your timing issues. Assuming that's what the root cause of your problem is.
    I didn't look at what's involved in destroying a process-shared mutex, though. That's a lot more complicated.
On edit: How do you know that pthread_mutex_destroy() is not destroying the mutex?

  • Bash issue on solaris 8 ( Segmentation fault for non root users)

    Hi,
This is solaris 8 on sparc and a NFS file server for the NIS+ environment. As supposed to be this file server is nis+ client.
Now this issue happens only sometimes and goes away on its own but it did not this time.
I connect to file server using ssh, system closes my session,
this is ssh -vvv log , copied here : http://pastebin.ca/1633893Please note that my shell is /bin/bash. It worked 99% time but not now, nothing is changed on system.
If I ssh root@fileserver then ssh connection works fine. root can also run bash command. and run other commands in bash
For a normal user with csh if the user tries "bash" , then gets
    user@fileserver%> bash
    Segmentation Fault
I am thinking this is somewhere related to rpc but I do not see any errors on nis+ server nor on fileserver.
    %>truss bash o/p is here :
http://pastebin.ca/1633907Please let me know what is this issue related to. If by stopping/restarting a process helps that would be great.
one more thing to note is, other nis+ clients can mount shares from this fileserver properly and authentication also works fine on them even for users with /bin/bash shell and bash does work manually also.
If you need any other info, please let me know
    Please help!
    Thanks!

Anyone any idea? I thought the truss o/p copied in pastebin might be very useful

  • Logrot.pl (v.4.4) issue on solaris 9

    logrot.pl does not check diskspace before doing a copy process of syslog_info; if there is not enough space, the copy process fails and the content of syslog_log is lost;
I know, that the error handling of such a script cannot take respect on each and every possible error that could appear but in case of the syslog file I would say it is such an essential file that it would be great that the loss of the content could be avoided.
currently I am unable to test if this issue is present in the current version but I found it to be valid in LMS 3.2 on solaris 9; here is the confiuration of logrot.pl
/var/log is configured as the backup directory,
/var/log/syslog_info is configured to be backed up
it seems when starting logrot.pl it first tries to copy syslog_info
the copy process fails due to /var being 100% in use

One thought...: Possibly a old Novell client installed on those models... I remember having an issue with users having to open the advanced login options, goto the windows login box. There the previous logged in user name needed to be cleared and login would be transparent again.

  • DAC Server to DB Server Connection issue on Solaris 10

    Hi,
I have a connection issue that has me completely miffed as to what is going on.
We have a Oracle DAC Server running on Solaris 10 that connects to the DAC repository inside a database on another host also running on Solaris 10. When I try and build a DAC execution plan I get an error where I unable to complete the build due to by repository connection being lost. Looking at the DAC logs you can see multiple entries of
    32231  INFO  Tue Oct 15 10:04:05 BST 2013  CONNECTION_ISSUE Repository ending polling
    32232  INFO  Tue Oct 15 10:09:05 BST 2013  CONNECTION_ISSUE Repository ending polling

Then eventually you see connection lost.
When I check the DB host using dmesg I notice the following entry over and over

There is no entry for the link going down just up all the time. The timing in the logs match with the DAC logs which makes my think this is where the issue may lie.
    root@v10emsu101 # dladm show-dev

Does anyone have any idea on why this keeps occurring or can it safely be ignored?

Did you find a solution to your problem?  It sounds like something we are experiencing.

  • Gnome panel issue in solaris 10 - help

    Hello ,
I have here solaris 10 (137111-01) on sunblade 1500 machine ( total 50 machines). There is a strange problem appearing since this week, when a user logs into JDE(gnome DE) then users gets logged in but gnome-panel does not show anything. If PID for gnome-panel is killed, gnome-panel restarts but again it is blank ( grayed out)
The above issue new and only for nis+ users whose home directories get auto mounted from solaris nfs servers. Let me say here that it worked fine until now for these nis+ users but now. They are forced to use common desktop env which they don't like.
Local user such as root or any other local use gets the gnome-panel with start menu and everything works fine for it.
I have tried restarting nis+ services as well as nfs.server service and rebooting the nis+ clients which have the issue but still hasn't helped it.
Somehow I managed to set panel preference to Normal (from Restart) and then killed the Panel PID. Started with truss,
    Here is the truss o/p.
http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=thvekw7VAnother thing observed is when the nis+ user logs into these workstations, they can't do ssh to any machine , it hangs and CTRL C also doesn't kill it. They have to close the terminal itself to kill it.

Although my main choice and default is Preview for .pdf items, some of the
files I have were made in a version of Reader and for whatever reason,
appear to be encoded or somehow customized in a way Reader will do a
better job of rendering them in the computer. So, for those files, I have
chosen Reader; while leaving the system default set to Preview.
While I did read the question, in reference to Preview, this may be the only option.
Perhaps such an arrangement may work for you, with only the troublesome items.
    Good luck & happy computing!
