Random Transposition of MIDI Part?

Hi all,
I don't know what I did, but for some reason one MIDI track (out of about 7) suddenly found itself transposed from a C to an E. The MIDI controller has been affected, too (i.e. to get a C note I have to play an E note on the controller).
I have no idea what has happened (I'm not a MIDI guy). Can anyone suggest where to look to fix this?

hey pal, just saw your post. I love midi- everything about it. I did not flash on your answer as of this moment- but as I'm working today or whenever (like ASAP) I'll make a note to jot down an answer. I get ****** because I spend so much time going back and forth from the inside environment windows just manipulating stuff for my midi setups. And Logic keeps forgetting my keyboard re-assignments for key shortcuts [even though I save everything-and I mean •everything• I do. I wear out the ⌘S buttons... I got something vaguely similar just yesterday, my Kurzweil keyboard which dup's as a controller besides having some ******* sounds was like an 1/8 or a 16th of a semitone flat. So I'm already in your ballpark. Lotta cats today think midi is passe- that's because they don't know midi codes or can't understand 'em. Mixing midi with software and audio stuff all together is the sh*t. And as for the Logic know-it-all that answered your question- how's he know if you don't mean -7 1/2 steps... never assume anything...

  • Splitting midi parts

    Hi All,
    can anyone tellme how to split midi parts up, i.e. if I got a midifile which has a brass section in one part but I would like to split the parts up trumpet/saxes/trombone/baritone etc. and use diff. instruments to trigger the sounds.
    Is there a quick way to do this.
    When I used to use Digitalperformer there was a v. good split notes facility which would allow you to send selected notes to a new midi channel etc.
    Any help would be much appreciated.
    James B

    I assume your original MIDI file is outside of LOGIC and has each part on a unique MIDI channel (Format 1, I think). If so, import the file and it should send each MIDI channel to a separate track such that there are as many regions as there are MIDI channels from the original.
    I import the MIDI file using (APPLE-I) or File>Import . My system does this "breaking out" of the MIDI file automatically. There may be a preference setting of which I'm unaware, however.
    If the file is currently in LOGIC, you could Export the File (as Format 1, I think) and then re-import the file.
    Hope this works for you,
    Mitch

  • Creating a Staff without a midi part??

    Hi,
    I'm trying to score something in Logic. If look at scoring in the manual, it tells me "a staff must exist" before you can score (well obviously!).
    Is it possible for me to create a score before a midi part exists. So can I create a new project, go to score editor and start scoring? If so, how to I create a new staff/stave to work with. When I bring up the score window, it says nothing to display.
    Any help would be really useful.
    Regards
    T.

    Hi
    you just need to create an Empty Region for first in the Arrange..
    after that, select the emty region and open the score page.
    you can use Pencil tools to create an Empty region

    Euphonix MC Mix

    Are your MC Mix in Eucon mode? If you use a midi mode, there's a possibility the MC Mix is sending MIDI messages. And are you sure we're talking midi parts and not automation?

  • Any way to do random quantize to midi to make it feel more 'real'?

    anyone know how to take a strict 16th midi performance and give it a little more of a real human feel? i dont want to swing but instead just make it feel a little more live. it is for an acoustic piano part. thanks!

    Yes - the Humanizer transform window preset - adjust the parameters to taste... by default it adds a random about of about "10" to the velocity and note positions, but you can adjust those parameters to get the randomisation you require...

  • Random Transposition - PLEASE HELP!

    Last week Logic Studio 8 started doing a very odd thing. I record some MIDI tracks. I move the tracks in the timeline and every bar is transposed by some completely random amount. It is the strangest thing I've ever seen. Needless to say, it's KILLING me on this project.
    I've trashed prefs to no avail...Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks-
    chris

    If you didn't enter any chords or transpositions manually but the problem occurred seemingly randomly, I wouldn't be surprised if that's exactly what happened -- transpose data got into your transpose track all by itself, completely spontaneously, and screwed everything up. I've seen this happen in Logic 8 plenty of times, not just to me but other people's systems. It's some kind of bug.
    If this happens, first save your song but then hit UNDO until you can get your song to sound like it did before.

  • Random crashes iMac mid 2011

    Hello fellow iMac users.
    I’ve been experiencing random crashes/application crashes on my mid-2011 iMac for the last three months or so. I’ve taken the computer to my local Apple store twice, but the Geniuses there weren’t able to identify the problem after running their various diagnostic tools.
    In addition, I have:
    reformatted my hard disk and reinstalled all software from scratch;
    updated to Mavericks;
    removed one set of 2x 4GB RAM chips (purchased in mid 2013 from Apple online store), leaving original 2x4GB RAM;
    removed original 2x4GB RAM chips and reinserted 2x4GB RAM purchased in mid 2013 from Apple online store;
    restored all 16GB RAM;
    run iMac diagnostics, disk utility, etc.
    Following is the latest crash report. I would be most grateful if anyone could provide insight on what the problem might be related to:
    faulty software (I was running Office 2011 for Mac, Parallels, and Safari at time of latest crash)?;
    faulty RAM?;
    hard-disk;
    graphics card;
    CPU…
    Many thanks in advance for any help and advice.

    I used the shift key to boot and had it running for 4 hours and the gray progress bar never got past about 20%. That said I never got into a working safe mode.
    I did however boot from the recovery drive and did the fix permissions and fix drive options. Drive check said drive looking good. Permission check showed about 5 permission issues which it was able to fix.
    Restarting the system just takes ages and the harddrive keeps crunches away (not a clicking which would be an easy indicator for a bad hard drive). At 20GB Ram this is an odd behavior.

    Ok, I solved this.
    This is a common issue on Mac Book Pro 15" 2010. The problem was well known by Apple Support and it is the logic board (they said). There is a free support by Apple that will repair your computer for free if you bring to them within three years from purchase. In my case they did me an exception and they repaired the computer even if it was out of warranty and was bought purchased then three years.
    I have never had any experience with Genius guys at Apple Stores but I had to say that they are really nice and supportive (at least the guy who helped me). He fixed the computer in less then 3 hours and I came back in the same day to pick it up. Amazing!
    I just am so happy and I hope that it will lasts for a very long time

  • Random, and rather odd, MIDI bug?

    For some reason, in the current session I'm working in, there seems to be some weird MIDI bug. I haven't changed any settings, so not sure what it could be.
    Here's what happens:
    Every time I record a MIDI part, once I stop recording, it automatically copies the part I just did and pastes it all the way to the end of the song. I need to delete the stuff following each time.
    Have a look at this pic so see what I mean:
    http://www.dicejar.com/happy/example.jpg
    Any ideas what it could be? It only seems to be doing it with this instrument though (Miroslav Philharmonic Orchestra) and didn't do it with BFD. It's not something that usually happens, seeing as I often use these two instruments together in a session.
    Any thoughts and ideas would be most welcome!

    Did you see it yet?
    In the inspector for that track, do you have the "Loop" check box selected.
    It's in the upper left part of the screen.

  • Can I transpose only part of a song?

    I need to lower the key of a song that's part of a medley. The first two parts are fine, so I don't need to lower the whole thing. Is there a way that I can just lower part of the song?

    You have to think of three different levels where you apply transposition
    1) MIDI Event
    You can just transpose individual MIDI Events bu dragging them up or down
    2) Region
    Select one or multiple Regions and use the Transpose Slider in the Inspector of the Audio or MIDI Editor. The Region Header in the Workspace (Tracks Area) will indicate  the transpose number with a number (see the screenshot)
    3) All Tracks
    Apply Transposition to all Tracks with the Transposition Track by setting up the Transposition Curve, the section along the timeline that is transposed.
    One important thing to keep in mind is that specific Regions (imported Audio FIles or Audio Files with Flex disabled) ignore the Transpose command and can't be transposed that way.
    You can find more on all those transpose topics with a detailed explanation of the Flex Mode in my book "GarageBand X - How it Works"
    In this screenshot, I transposed the Audio Region (+2) and the MIDI Region (+4). In addition I setup the Tranposition curve to transpose the Verse by +5 semitones and then go down -2 (not that this would make any sense musically).
    Hope that helps

  • Random lines around screen and then cannot restart computer

    I'm having an issue with my iMac. recently i i will turn it on and after a while there will be random lines across my screen in certain windows. when I move the windows around the line moves with the window. as i open other apps i start getting other random lines in other parts of the screen. after a little while longer there is so much random pixels all over the screen that I cant work anymore. at this point hte computer is basically stuck and I cannt do anything. I will then hold the power button down to turn off the computer. when i turn it back on I get the black screen of death which says I have to turn the computer off and turn it back n. if i keep turning it off and on it wont start and give me the same screen. if i wait a couple of hours and start it back up it will first give me the screen again. the second time it will start and tell me that mac unexpectedly shut down. at first the technicians told me that I should reformat the hard drive and I did that. is still have the same problem. does anyone have any idea what this could be?

    If the message you're getting is in several languages, that's a kernel panic. Kernel panics are usually, but not always, caused by hardware, with memory a leading cause. If you have a mid-2010 mini, you can easily reseat the memory (remove and reinstall) .... mini's prior to that are a bit more involved to open the case.
    See this FAQ on resolving kernel panics.

  • Random reset of ringtone volume since update to 2.0

    Since updating to 2.0 my ringtone volume level, which I keep on the hightest level, will randomly reset to mid-level, causing me to miss a number of calls. Anyone else notice this and is there a solution?
    Thanks

    My 1st gen iphone (16GB) is up to the same antics. Pre 2.0 all was perfect. Then then update... During calls, if you adjust the volume for either the iphone earpiece, speaker phone, or bluetooth headset (I'm using the Plantronics voyager 520, which was purchased at the apple store), the ringer volume gets adjusted as well.
    Just go into the sounds option under settings, make a call, and watch in awe as you adjust your call volume and ringer volume at the same time.
    I've missed calls b/c the volume resets it self to a lower (random) setting. Now I must check after every call. The best part is if you push up on your volume button while at the home screen (the ringer volume pop up appears) and note that you have it on the highest setting, go ahead and check the sound option under settings. It will be at some random lower level. Oh my phone never did this on 1.4. I do hope the engineers are reading this and release a fix ASAP. The main purpose of the iPhone is to be a phone. Missing calls due to a low ringer volume is crazy.
    Oh, I've already restored, don't bother, problem was not resolved. I haven't come across any other problems with the 2.0 update.

  • Problems with sysex midi dumps (Jomox Xbase 888 Logic Pro 8)

    Hello, I am trying to record sysex midi dumps FROM (Jomox Xbase888) TO Logic Pro 8 but I can't get the two devices to communicate. Can somebody help out? Many thanks. Seb

    Well, I was told that I would get the same (ext. 888 sequencer feel) when reading the sysex data.
    Sysex is not a way to transfer files between different devices, it is a way to back up a particular devices' data. Logic does not *see into* or understand any data in a sysex dump, it simply records it, or plays it back. You cannot transfer sequences into another sequencer or DAW using sysex. You have to do it via MIDI, or any MIDI file/export/import that the device in question has.
    Inputting the midi notes into Logic doesn't get me the same result or vibe compared to when the two devices are synced.
    Probably because you are trying to dump the whole sequence at once, and you are running out of MIDI bandwidth (or you are quantising in Logic on the way in). Play in a part at a time for better timing.
    When in sync mode, the 888 devices will start ON TIME on 1 (cycle range) but I try to start anywhere else in the track, it won't sync anymore, the 888 patterns will start on a random order.
    MIDI clock does not carry position info at all, it simply caries timing. If your device supports Song Position Pointers, that will work, or better still, use MIDI Time Code instead of MIDI clock.
    Logic supports all these things, but whether your other device does I don't know - check it's manual.
    The 888 won't sync with Logic unless I set Logic's "Delay transmission" parameter to -36ms -- is this normal?
    Dunno, it depends on your device, or whether you have any latency inducing plugins running that's delaying Logic's audio stream...

  • Creating and Saving My Own Midi Loops/Instrument

    I know how to create a new instrument in GB but can I also create and save midi loops that are attached to the instrument and save them in the loop browser? The same way other midi parts work so when you drag the midi out of the loop browser and into your session it loads both the part and the instrument at the same time?

    select your loop and use the Add To Loop Library menuItem

  • A simple question on random number generation?

    Hi,
    This is a rather simple question and shows my newbieness quite blatantly!
    I'm trying to generate a random number in a part of a test I have.
    So, I have a little method which looks like this:
    public int getRandomNumber(int number){
            Random random = new Random(number);
            return random.nextInt(number);
        }And in my code I do int random = getRandomNumber(blah)...where blah is always the same number.
    My problem is it always returns the same number. What am I missing here. I was under the impression that nextint(int n) was supposed to generate the number randomly!! Obviously I'm doing something wrong or not using the correct thing. Someone please point out my stupidity and point me in the right direction? Ta

    I think the idea is that Random will generate the same pseudo-random sequence over and over if you don't supply a seed value. (The better to debug with, my dear.) When you're ready to put an app into production, the seed value should be the current system time in milliseconds to guarantee a new sequence with each run.
    Do indeed move Random outside the loop. Think of it like a number factory - instantiate it once and let it pump out the random values for you as needed.
