Raw file changes

Hi, I have another question, When I open a CR2 or DNG file in raw and I do changes to it, then click open image which takes me to photoshop CS4 and save it, then I click on Bridge again to open another raw file, I noticed the previous original raw file I was working on also has changed it has all the changes I did in raw. If I remember right it didn't do this before.

Thanks for the quick response.
So what you're saying is that it does change the original raw file, and if I want it to go back to its original state I have to right click that raw file in bridge and clear the settings or go back to raw defaults in the develop settings.  Thanks for your time.
The changes you make and apply in Adobe Camera Raw leave the original raw file unaltered but the changes are recorded in metadata or a "sidecar file" and affect the appearance, showing a little icon in the Bridge thumbnail.
If you clear the settings they are, well, cleared.

  • Raw file changed. How come?

I opened a raw file in CS4 Bridge, made some adjustments and opened it in PS.  After I saved the file to my desktop I discovered that the changes I made are now reflected in the original raw file.  I thought raw files are not chageable.
I am sure there is a way to get back to the original, but how?
    Thank you in advance, Peter

" I thought raw files are not chageable."
Edits in Camera Raw are none destructive. That is, the actual image pixels are not changed.
What Camera Raw does do -- when you make changes to an image in Camera Raw -- is to save those changes are metadata.
You can remove the camera raw's metadata from an image and thereby "undo" your Camera Raw editing.
In Bridge, you can also view the Camera Raw metadata for an image, which describes the changes you have made to the image in Camera Raw.

  • When is my RAW file changed? Upon import? Upon viewing? Only after edit list started?

    All:
I now have a "second copy" made in a separate hard drive when I import files from my camera cards. I want an untouched file for possible comparative "developing" or rendering in DxO or PhotoNinja. Might convert everything to DNG someday.
Asking LR to do this at the top of the Import pane is I assume, creates a copy *and* makes NO changes to the RAW data.
OTOH, Lightroom will offer me the image in Camera Raw to view, create, and interpret my edit/develop decisions. But I have been thinking about this and need to ask all of you: Is that CR2 file in my dated Lightroom database folders a changed file in any way from the RAW file while it was still on the card? The decision to hold edit data in sidecar files plays a part in this, right?  External sidecar files means even after edits I can copy the CR2 file and use it in other [RAW]converter's software?

Being a "non-destructive editor", Lightroom does not (cannot) change your CR2 files....with one exception, which is when/if you choose to edit the capture time of an image, in which case the changed date is written back into the file header's EXIF field. But apart from that, it is never ever changed.....all edits are stored primarily in the catalog's database, and optionally you can have them written into XMP sidecars. Having the XMP sidecar would allow you to open the raw file in another XMP-capable Adobe program, outside Lightroom, and see the edits applied. Not sure if other non-Adobe raw converters would be able to interpret all of that XMP info.
For non-proprietary raw files (e.g. DNG, Tiff), you can also choose to save the XMP data but in this case it would be written directly into the files header, not into sidecar files. The underlying image data is still, however, unchanged.

  • Colours upon importing Raw files change

    Hi,
I shoot raw on Canon EOS 30D. As I wasn't happy with colour cast on my images (a bit reddish) and I couldn't get the results I like in Lr, I tried to change Picture Style Settings on the camera.
I shot 3 images with 3 different settigs of Colour Tone (max left, middle, max right).
I can see they look diffirent on the camera screen, they look different in import dialog box in Lr but when they get imported into Lr, they all look the same!! And the same redddish colour cast on all of them...
Is Lr applying any settings upon import?

  • Raw files management

    Hello!
I usually shoot in RAW. Raw is better than jpeg for many reasons, however, sometimes, to my surprise I get great previews in Aperture. However, when i open them, the colors immediately change to something disturbing. Of course this is to be expected, since the Raw file does not contain any specific settings and this is left for the user to decide (duh).  However, given the fact that sometimes the preview looks great, i open it and boom - i have to reedit it because the raw file changed its settings.
So my question is - is there any way to keep the preview settings of the raw file and say to Aperture - "Please dont change it because its gorgeous the way it is !!!!" ?

I do understand what everyone is saying and everyone is right. I do understand that if i want my camera settings i need to shoot in jpeg. But that is a bit weird, isn`t it? I want to shoot in Raw, because 90% of the time i will edit the shots properly so i don`t care about camera settigns. However, sometimes Nikon`s algorithm surprises me and i decide that this some particular shot doesnt need serious editing. Maybe i want to tweak couple of small things like brightness/contrast/WB, but i want my camera settings to be my starting point. Because when i open the picture full size - KABOOM, colour and detail vanish, the picture becomes disturbingly "common", and i have to spend 10 more minitues trying to figure out what settigns i need to change in order to get the preview. And i dont know when the camera`s algorithm is going to be nice and when not, which is why i alwaya shoot in RAW. And i do understand that using Nikon software for raw processing might help with this issue, but it is not enough. Because my workflow is shattered to pieces now. I use Apreture all the time, everything gets imported to it. Using extra programs before aperture complicates the process and it is very inconvinient. So there`s got to be a way to go around this.
Maybe camera settings presets? Or scan the colours and settigns of the preview and apply them to the raw?

My problem is when I open up a raw file from desktop into bridge edit the raw image click done sending it back to the desktop as a raw file those changes do not appear on the desktop image. I've tried making an obvious change to an image making it b&w but again that does'nt appear on the desktop image, as mentioned I'm running CS5 with Mavericks 10.9.2.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, you're not.  That's not an accurate description of any of the Canon 5D models.
There are EOS 5D, EOS 5D Mark II, and EOS 5D Mark III models.  Which do you have, specifically?  Details will matter for this.
If you have a 5D Mark III (three) it's too new and you will not be able to directly open files with Photoshop CS4.  You'll either need a newer version of Photoshop or to use the free DNG converter.

    Hi Jim,
yes after I imported my .cr2 raw files into new catalog it started to work. Windows 7 still does not recognize them but I can edit them as you said within the Lr5.6 and then export them into .psd or .dng files...as needed.
I bought Lr5 only because I got present - my new camera Cannon 70D and because my older Photoshop CS5.5 raw plugin does not recognize. cr2 files.
    Many thanks for your help.

  • When I move a RAW file from IPhoto to my desktop or Photoshop it changes to a jpeg and reduces in size. How can I get the Raw file across?

When I move a RAW file from IPhoto on my macbook pro to desktop or Photoshop it changes to a jpeg and reduces in size. How can I get the Raw file to move across?

I create separate folders based on the year and then the actual date of when I take images. You can make those folders anywhere on any hard drive that is connected to your Mac whether internal or external. I also use the Photoshop Photo Downloader that is included with Photoshop/Bridge and it will create the date folder so all I do is create a Year folder.
Open Bridge or click on the Bridge icon in PS and in the File menu item in Bridge select "Get photos from Camera". It can be a camera connected to your Mac or a memory card from a camera. A window will open and you then select the camera or memory card. Set the location they will be downloaded to, just the folder and you can Browse to a folder that you created, then in the "Create  Subfolders drop down select what date stamp you want to use or or custom name or not to create subfolders at all.
I've never cared for iPhoto one bit. I tried it but found it way to restrictive. It likes to have full control over how you interact with your images.

  • No changes appear when batch editing Camera Raw Files and saving as jpegs

When I batch edit my raw files, including saving the file as a jpeg, from bridge or photoshop the resulting file saved never includes any changes I made in the Camera Raw editor. For example if I have lightened the photo by changing the exposure in Camera Raw as a saved jpeg after batching the file is still as dark as when originally shot. Is there some little box I forgot to check or something? Thanks!
    andy

I've seen something like this, but have not figured out why yet. In my situation I select a group of images in Bridge and go to Tools / Photoshop / Image Processor.
There I click the "open first image to apply settings" box.
    Save in Same Location
Save as JPEG, resize to fit (1200 pixels), Convert Profile to sRGB.
    No Action selected
    Include ICC Profile
Run it and in Camera Raw roll the saturation down to -100 (convert to b&W).
    Click "Open Image"
The process runs and the first image is converted to b&w, but the others are not.

  • Mystery: How can RAW file spontaneously change to jpg file?

Although I have been using iPhoto 6 for some time I just noticed for the first time something strange when I dragged a NEF file (RAW Nikon file) from iPhoto and dropped it onto my desktop. What happened was that the NEF file suddenly transformed itself into a jpg file when I dropped it onto the desktop. Weird! I could hardly believe my eyes.
Later I noticed that the same thing happened when I dragged a NEF file from iPhoto and dropped it onto a Dock icon for Photomatix, a program for generating HDR images. The file opened up in Photomatix but it opened as a jpg file rather than as a NEF file. Holy Toledo!
What in the world is going on here? I hope that one of you iPhoto experts can tell me how NEF files can magically morph themselves into jpg files. I also need some expert advice on how to deal with this phenomenon.
By the way, I have converted many NEF files in the Adobe Camera RAW plug-in of Photoshop Elements, but to the best of my knowledge they have never changed identity from NEF files to jpg files when I handed them off from iPhoto to Photoshop Elements. In fact, in iPhoto Preferences/Advanced I have checked the "Use RAW files with external editor" box.

    No mystery whatever,
When you import a RAW file into iPhoto it automatically creates a JPEG preview of the file. That’s what you happen to be looking at in the iPhoto Window. Drag it out and you always get the current version of the file. Want to get the Original - select the pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and select the Original in the dialogue and you’ll get your NEF.
This is all covered in the Help. Now what help do you need to “deal with this phenomenon.“?

How did you save them to iPhoto? Because you change the format from NEF to JPG then you must save them to the desktop and then import the JPEG to iPhoto.
