Read this when your memory speed seems too low

You noticed that your memory is not running at the speed that you expected and you are wondering
why that is. Here is the most likely answer to that.
Many monitoring programs don't show you the double data rate (DDR) of your memory. So, first, multiply your memory frequency by 2 to get the double data rate. For example, when using PC4300 ram, you get a memory frequency of 267MHz, in stead of 533MHz. 266 is only half the speed of 533, so your monitoring program shows single data rate, not double. With PC3200 it goes 200/400MHz, etc.
The second thing you should consider is the following. The combination of certain memory frequencies and CPU-speeds make it impossible for the memory/cpu to run at full data rate specified by the memory manufacturer. I'll take my own system as an example to show what I mean.
- 2 Opterons 2212, running at 2000MHz.
- PC4300 memory installed. Maximum speed is 267 (single data rate) or 533 (double data rate) MHz.
Now, the following happens: To get the right memory clock speed, the cpu speed is divided by a number. In this case, it would be:
2000/266=7.5 .
This outcome is not possible for the CPU. It needs a round (solid) number. In this case the choice is between 7 and 8. However, when using 7, chances are that the system will not run stable, because the outcome is higher than the memory can handle (guarenteed):
2000/7=286MHz (572MHz DDR).
So, the higher numer (8) is chosen, giving this result:
2000/8=250MHz (500MHz DDR).
In my case, CPU-Z reports a data rate of about 250MHz. Note the first remark I made: you need to
multiply by 2, to get the doube data rate (DDR) speed: 500MHz.
If you oc the cpu speed slightly, memory speed will increase a bit as well. Example: when overclocking the cpu to about 2125MHz, the memory will start running at the speed it can handle:
2125/8=266MHz (533MHz DDR).

Does the number of memory chips affect this behavior? I have two 1GB PC3200 chips for my MSI KT8 Neo FISR. When I run each one separately, it registers as 200MHz (DDR400) in memtest86. When run together, they register as 100MHz (DDR200). This alarms me to no end, but it sounds like this is expected, yes? If so, why do they "appear" to run at full speed singly, but half-speed running together? And will the actual speed of the two running together match the speed of one by itself (otherwise, I'll see a performance hit when upgrading from 1GB to 2BG)?

This should solve the problem
Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
It will not erase any of your personal data, just reset the settings.

It depends on your internet service provider and only the ISP can increase it!
If you have some issues with the data transfer speed then I recommend contacting your internet service provider!

So, after much heartache, many trials and moments of desperation I have succeeded in doing what every HP support person told me was impossible:
I have unbricked my drive AND have recovered ALL of my data!!!
How did I do it, you might ask? First let me tell you what happened before my joyous moment:
I have been researching the Seagate firmware issue since Decemeber and read a lot about the issues people were having and the causes for these problems. Seems like what this firmware bug does is cause one of two problems: either the drive shows up in BIOS but shows 0 capacity, or it doesn't show up in BIOS at all. It seems that the OEM drives we all have in our TouchSmarts were affeced by the latter issue (hard drive no longer showing up). This is due to the drive getting stuck in a mode (google BSY error and you'll find the issue) which does not allow it to respond back; it is, in effect, eternally busy.
As a result of this BSY error, I could not run the newly posted HP firmware update for our Seagate drives. This is when the heartache began. After countless hours of research and digging, I came across the following forum which became my El Dorado.

Basically, the tutorial walks you through the steps needed to "hack" into your hard drive's board and "talk to it directly" via Hyper Terminal (I ended up using a USB data cable for my old Siemens mobile phone, though). It took me two goes at it and a lot of patience and careful reading, but my drive came back to life!
So again, here are my details and issues for you in summary:
Hardware:
- HP TouchSmart IQ506
- Seagate Barracuda drive: 500GB, ST3500620AS, model series 7200.11, HP firmware version HP24
Problem Description:
- The drive just stopped working
- Booted my PC and the drive was no longer showing up in BIOS
- Hard drive light was continuously lit
- Hard drive made no funny clicking noises
- The drive was not responsive to the new firmware fix (HP13 Rev. A from 6 Feb 2009)

CS6 Photoshop reads this when attempting to "Could not initialize Photoshop because the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted). HELP!

Finally got a call this morning from an Adobe Rep and he explained to me the issue. He explained that I needed to uninstall the adobe product, in this case Photoshop CS6 and download it again and reinstall it! So, I did that and get the same message when attempting to open the newly downloaded software: "Could not initialize Photoshop because the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted). Please, if someone could help me as soon as possible! I am very anxious to remedy this situation. Thank you!

This seems to have cropped up a lot recently. What has seemed to work so far is intentionally resetting your preferences:
Reset Preferences
1) Close the program and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Win)/Cmd+Option+Shift (Mac) during startup (not reversible)
or
2) Move the Folder. See:

Read this if your Airport connection drops

I just got off the phone with support. I noticed that many other people are having this same issue, where if there is no network traffic, the Airport drops its association to the AP. They are unaware of others having this problem. So, if you're having this problem, you need to call support and tell them, or it's not going to get fixed.
We troubleshooted for about 30 mins, ran a hardware test, and found nothing. It definitely only happens when there is no network traffic, if I start a continuous ping, the connection never drops. I've tried it on my Airport Express, a Linksys WRT54G, a NetScreen 5GT-Wireless, and an Airespace network. I read on some other forums that MBP users were having the issue, and it seems to have surfaced in 10.4.5, and continues to exist in 10.4.6.
Bottom line, if you're having the problem, stop posting here and pick up the phone. It won't get fixed unless they create tickets for the issue.

I think i have figured out the problem between the networking (airport or ethernet) on linksys routers and the macbook. For some reason the macbook only kills the router when it goes on standby or when you shutdown. Think it has to do with the way the new airport card is disconnecting from the router that is causing for the whole router to drop. What i did was check on the box where it says to disconnect from ap before logging off. Which means you also have to set the macbook to log off the user account when it goes on standby that way the airport will properly log off. I think its not an issue related with the atheros card on the new macbooks but with osx itself. Especially considering that when i boot up windows on the macbook the wireless works fine after a shutdown or standby.

It took me weeks(!) to find this solution here, but I think at least for me it worked and could be helpful for anyone else who has this or similar issues (such as when typing you lose the cursor
and you have to click back into the program you are using) after the last Apple Security Update that caused this bug.
I do not know if this will work for everyone, but it worked for me.
It seems all to be linked to Stuffit and a preference called Stuffit AVR (Archive Via Rename): In your system preferences go to the bottom and click on the Stuffit AVR option. Click the Stuffit AVR tab
on the left, and click the "STOP" button. This should do the trick. For some reason this is cycling through our desktop/finder and causing so much of the frustration since this update.

After the quicktime 7.6 update I can no longer open Civilization, Mail, Logic Pro, iTunes, or even the System Preferences panel (crashes immediately). Finder crashes upon selecting an audio files but doesn't seem to be doing the same looping. I've reverted to 7.5.5 using pacifist but this hasn't fixed anything. Also moved into a new folder all codecs from the Quicktime library. I only have Stuffit expander, so no AVR preference even if I could open the system prefs.

Processor Speed Slightly too low

Hello,
Whenever I watch videos they are choppy (Youtube.com, Weather.com, even listening to Pandora.com and doing other things Pandora can be choppy). After doing some troubleshooting I came across the page with System Requirements.
It says that I need a minimum "2.33GHz or faster x86-compatible processor, or Intel® Atom™ 1.6GHz or faster processor for netbooks".
I have an "AMD Sempron (tm) Processor LE-1300 2.30 GHz". I think this is probably the problem.
Is it possible for me to download a previous version which would run with this processor, or do you have any other suggestions other than replacing the processor?

What you're describing is CPU contention. The machine isn't fast enough. We will use hardware acceleration for graphics and audio if it's available, but it sounds like we're not doing that on your system. Either the videos aren't encoded in a way that we can take advantage of hardware, or your drivers aren't supported.
There's some information here on checking that hardware acceleration is enabled and on updating your drivers:
Video playback issues
If you've done all of that and you're still stuck, there's probably not a lot you can do. Also, it's probably actually less about the speed and more about the number of cores (which allow things to be processed concurrently). Clock speeds haven't really increased, but you'll see 2.7-3.0 Ghz quad-core chips now at the high-end, instead of single-core chips. If cost is an issue, there are some really nice Chromebooks in the $2-300 range that would be more than adequate.

What if my processing speed is too low?

It depends on which processor it is and how many cores you have.
But, generally, I always recommend having at least twice the recommended minimums for any hardware. The 2 ghz Adobe recommends for Premiere Elements is based on a single-core Pentium. If you've got a quad-core processor, you're probably okay. A dual-core 1.4 ghz is a bit anemic for video editing -- although it also depends on which model of camcorder your video is coming from and if you're editing two-minute videos for YouTube or 1 hour videos for BluRay discs.
What model of processor do you have?
Have you downloaded the free demo and given it a test drive?

Speed 700mhz too low for iPhoto 8?

I would like to upgrade to iPhoto 8 from my present iPhoto 4, but notice the minimum speed is 733mhz. As I only have 700mhz, does this mean iPhoto 8 would not work at all? Would I be better to go to something between 4 and 8? Would appreciate comments. Thank you.

That requirement is for iDVD and doesn't apply to iPhoto, iWeb, or GarageBand.

Macintosh HD space seem too low

When I changed over from a PC to a MB in June this year I had a 60 GB HD in the PC of which I had only used 30 GB.
Today looking at the space left on my MB HD it's showing only 39 GB free out of a 120 GB HD! is there any way in Tiger to show were all the HD space is being used?

You can easily check the storage space being used by individual folders by right clicking on the folder and selecting 'Get Info' from the menu, it will provide you a readout of how much drive space is being used by that folder. If you find one using a lot of drive space, drill down a bit more until you can locate the offending file or folder!

Hey guys, I run rman with mhvtl. but the backup speed is too low(500kB/s).
the mhvtl debugging prints indicate that the block size is 64kB and the scsi command is running synchronous.

If you disable systemd service from startup, you will lose some kind of functionality, and you should try to figure out yourself whether you need that functionality of not.
If you use pulseaudio (I assume you do, since it looks like you're using gnome), you can safely disable alsa-restore.service and alsa-store.service, as pulseaudio will restore audio levels by itself.
I've masked systemd-vconsole-setup.service myself (disabling isn't enought), since I rarely use virtual console on ttys. I don't have correct keymap on ttys but that's not a big deal for me.
I don't think you need all those @backlight services either. I've personally masked all but one on my system.
e4rat will most likely reduce your start up time greatly, although it's a bit of a hassle to set up.
systemd-readahead might also help, but you should test it for yourself.
I'm also thinking you could probably optimize your initramfs a bit, as 11s is quite long for loading kernel. At least make sure you have 'autodetect' hook enabled in mkinitcpio.conf.
Also you can use lz4hc for compressing initramfs (COMPRESSION="lz4" and COMPRESSION_OPTIONS="-9" in mkinitcpio.conf), which should be faster on decompression than other algorithms.

Salary too low for programmers

I think that salaries are too low. After deductions I get 1.500 Euro on my bank.
Okay, I'm a junior programmer. But programming is hard and one needs a lot of knowledge. I don't think that I earn enough money. If I count the learning which I do in my spare time, I work at least 45 hours a week (38,5 are normal in my Country).
What do you think? Is it enough (1.500 Euro)? Its a German salary.

No one works this little, except people working at large companies where the unions have a big influence. But with ANY job (even at large companies) that gets you as much as you earn (1500 euro after taxes is a lot!) you will end up doing overhours. That is just normal.
So it is your pre-tax income that matters and that can be taken as a basis. Lets suppose you earn 2500 euro per month before taxes. That seems reasonable if you have no college degree. If you have a college degree you should earn more, lets say 3000 euro per month. If you have a college degree and several years of experience and most important good references (like applications that you have written that are in production use today) then you will be making 4000 per month easily. If you are creative and willing to work up to 50 hours per week and have a lot of allround experience (at least 5 years), then you can make 5000 euro or more per month ... that is BEFORE taxes, you after-tax income depends on your family-situation and all that ...
Also these figures depend on whatever extra benefits you get from your employer ?
Do you have a pension insurance ? (You should have one, because the public pension system will not get you anything when you are old).
Do you get extra monthly salary for christmas or for vaction ?
Do you drive a company car privately ?
So your salary might be too low, but from the given informatino that is hard to judge. Most of all your ability to create profit for your company matters, that is even more important then the skills you have. Since your boss couldn't care less, what your skills are, as long as the profit is ok.
So give additional information, and then we should chat about the strategy for your "gehaltverhandlung" :9
