Recommendations for updating

My procedure for a major OS or Security update
I never run a major update right away. I always wait at least a week or so to see what develops. Most problems I see here are the result either of a specific incompatibility with a third party application or plug-in, or some pre-existing software or hardware issue related to that unique user, which only comes to light due to the stress an update writing many thousands of new files causes. Then, there are occasionally, presumably, as in the instance of font and PDF problems with the 10.6.7 update, bugs in the update itself, which affect the majority of users.
External drives are not that expensive these days. I have two clones on externals and if I'm concerned enough about an update, I can install it on one of these and test it first.
Here's my own updating procedure. Major updates don't come along that often. It's worth going to the trouble to do this.
1. Have a backup, so if something does go wrong you won't be left in big trouble.
2. Verify and if necessary repair the drive from Disk Utility. (To repair, you must be booted from the Install Disc or an external clone.)
3. Disconnect all peripherals except the keyboard and mouse.
4. Download the Combo Update from Apple Downloads. It's generally more reliable to update from the standalone Combo than from Software Update, and the Combo, as it includes all updates from 10.6 onwards, may correct any files that have been corrupted or somehow gone missing.
5. Boot in Safe Boot. Hold the Shift key down at start up. Give it time, it will take longer. (The Safe Boot will also actually check and repair the drive if necessary--and if possible.) Safe Boot loads a stripped down system which may reduce any chance of incompatibility while the update is running. Keep all Applications closed.
6. Repair Permissions from Disk Utility while booted in Safe Boot.
7. Install the update from Safe Boot. Keep all Applications closed.
8. Restart when prompted and give the system up to five minutes to finish the final touches of the update with all Applications closed.
9. Verify the Drive and Repair Permissions again.
10. And then I like to restart again.
One other caution. If you are running updates from Software Update, run them one at a time, never all at once. This gives the system a chance to assimilate each one, especially if restarts are involved, and not choke on them.
I also prefer to get "non-major" updates as standalones from Apple Downloads, rather than from Software Update. I only use Software Update to see what's available.

10.6.8 Combo Update

Hi WZZZ, I want to ask you about a new problem that has come up since UNinstalling MacKeeper yesterday. I wasn't having problems except thought that it was slowing Mac down and had also read your posts and others' that MK is bad news. Now....it is just about FUBAR. Letter Opener, which I used over a year ago/free version, is now pop-up containing the name & email address of a past friend whose info I just deleted a few days ago. It won't budge. I tried re-installing the free version thinking that it would override whatever is there from before--same result. If I want to use the free version, which of course I don't, and enter in/out mail conf, supposedly I can open Mail; however, I'm not much up for trusting that either. I can get/use email off my ISP web page, but doing business, that's cumbersome.
Put all LO I could find into Trash, deleted re-booted, re-booted using Safe Boot---nope--
I trust your knowledge...
also, now Time Machine says it can't back up because there is no disk, although it has been intimately involved with my Free Agent for about 4 years now....FA is backing up and can be opened as FA but TM is essentially not working as such. Thanks in advance for any advice-----unsure how to write directly to you, this forum is new to me. I appreciate your help!
UPDATE---TIME MACHINE LOOKS TO BE BACK, I just tried again---shows "FA on Nancy's computer" as disk, click & heavenly days, IT looks to be fixed-
now back to email/Letter Opener, obnoxious twerp that it is...

Is pk recommended for update speed and update/insert v merge performance

Hi there,
We are looking to merge 50,000 rows or so into a table each day.
What is generally faster merge or 2 separate sqls (1 to insetrt and 1 to update). Like the merge command but wonder about performance vs the 2 sqls.
Also with both merge and update is it quicker to try match on a pk or would matching on other unique indexes be just as quick.

Safe boot from raid1 system disk? Still recommended for updating OS?

My MP just reboots or hangs.
Is safe boot still better way to update OS in .5?
GUI is disabled anyway in "normal" update procedure and maybe same services than with Safe Boot?

Does this only occur with 10.6.8? I just gave this a try on my 10.8.3 system with AIR 3.6 but couldn't reproduce the crash on quit. However, I also was unable to log into the application due to lack of credentials. Could you please open a bug on this over at bugbase.adobe.com? Recent Software Update - Recommended for FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4 Users

There is a recent Software Update ("ProApps Quicktime Codecs") that is recommended for the FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4. Should FCP 7/FCS 3 Users download this update as well, or avoid to prevent any conflicts?

I have one boot drive with 10.6.8 and FCS 3, and a 2nd boot drive with 10.9 and the FCP X Trial - best to avoid any problems. Everything is smooth as glass at the moment.

Sometimes the updater gets in a funny state - Go to http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ and download the full installer. Close Firefox and run the installer

Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing when trying to perform an update. I recommend trying to update using iTunes, and as always, it is a good idea to make a backup first.

HP LaserJet Pro 200 color M251nw won't connect for updates

Printer works fine with desktop and wireless. Can't get it too "UPdate" or connect with webservices.

Hi Dakine50. There are a few possible reasons the printer will not connect to Web Services (which will allow for updates). The first thing I recommend would be to turn the printer off. Unplug your router and count to 10. When the router comes back online, turn your printer on. When your printer is back online, try to update again.
If that fails you can set a Manual DNS in your printers Embedded Web Server (EWS).
Print a network summary page to obtain your printers IP address.
1. On the printer's control panel, touch the Setup icon. The Setup menu opens.
2. Touch Reports .
3. Touch Network Summary . A network summary page prints. Locate the printer IP address.
4. Open a new Web browser window (such as Internet Explorer).
5. Type the IP address from the network summary page in the Web browser address window.
6. Press Enter to open the EWS.
7. Click the Network tab. Here you need to find the section that allows you to set a Manual DNS (cannot recall which sub section it is under).
8. Set the: Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8 and Alternate DNS: 8.8.4.4 . This will route through Google's DNS and will usually resolve the issue.
9. After you apply these settings, if your EWS has a Web Services tab, try to enable them through there.
*Sometimes a network reboot as I instructed above is necessary for those changes to take effect.

Software update will only bring you up to the current level of the system you are using - you are at the maximum for Snow Leopard. To get Lion or higher you will have to go to the Mac App Store in Applications and purchase it there (Yosemite is free). You will need to check that your Mac meets the requirements and you should particularly note that PPC programs such as AppleWorks will not run in Lion or above.
The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
Lion is available in the Online Apple Store ($19.99). Mountain Lion (10.8.x) is also available there at the same price (though it's reported to have been removed from sale in some countries so may well cease to be available generally) but there seems little point as the system requirements are the same for Yosemite (10.10.x) - which is free - unless you need to run specific software which will run on Mountain Lion only.
The requirements for Mountain Lion and Yosemite are:
OS X v10.6.8 or later
2GB of memory
8GB of available space
and the supported models are:
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)

If the problem is only with Safari and you are otherwise happy with Snow Leopard you could switch to FireFox (free) - the latest version of that will run in Snow Leopard.

What is the best method for updating Bios for 8.1 on GT70 2OD

I've been getting a bunch of different BSODs and its been recommended I update my bios because I am running win 8.1
Im just a little confused with which method would be best to update the bios. The EFI bios utility method on the PDF looks easy enough, but the information above that says to use the flash utility in the compressed file. Is that the afuwinx64.exe file and I run it from windows? or can I do something with the .bat files?
As you can tell I dont know to much about this kind of thing, I have been avoiding this update hoping to solve all issues without it, no such luck unfortunately. The feedback I got said that it seems as If something is misconfigured. in your opinion is it likely not having the bios updated could cause issues?

Use one of the methods outlined in the PDF files on the website from MSI. Either of those methods should work just fine.
The generally recommended method though is using the BIOS HQ Flasher.

I would NOT just flash using the exe or the bat files, as this can cause issues if done improperly.
I believe there was a bios update for the GE series of laptops because of a configuration issue for Windows 8.1. I don't believe the update for the GT series for Windows 8.1 had that same issue.

RV_INVOICE_DOCUMENT_UPDATE is used to buffer header updates, i don't think you need this. what you most likely need is RV_INVOICE_DOCUMENT_ADD to process the buffered item updates. but its highly recommended to have complete sequence 1. RV_INVOICE_REFRESH 2. RV_INVOICE_DOCUMENT_READ 3. series of RV_INVOICE_ITEM_MAINTAIN, if multiple line update 4. RV_INVOICE_DOCUMENT_ADD

"a new version number" for updates

Hi,
in iba2.0 there for updates there is a new field for: "new version number". default is 1.0.
it the support it said the number must be higher than in the store.
actually I don't see a version number at my book page in the store.
however - since it is published yet the version number probably should be 1.1 or 2.0. I don't see any information how the numers have to be increased.
furthermore I did not see any field to explain about "what's new".
After uploading I got a waring: "ITMS-4172..."

New info: Updating to iba 2.0 without updating to producer 2.8 is not to recommend:
Book Versioning is available for books constructed in EPUB 3 or using iBooks Author version 2.0.
If your book is in EPUB 3 format or was created using iBooks Author version 2.0, it is important to note you are required to fill out the "What's New in Version" section in the Info pane in iTunes Producer. If you update your book and you do not fill out this section, your book will not continue through our review process and thus, will not go live on the iBookstore.
First please ensure you are using the latest version (2.8) of iTunes Producer. You can download this new version in iTunes Connect under the Deliver Your Content module. Once you have launched iTunes Producer version 2.8 and clicked on Look Up Metadata from the “Welcome to iTunes Producer” window, you will see the "What’s New in Version" section in the Info pane.
If your book is not in EPUB 3 format and was not created using iBooks Author version 2.0, you are not required to fill out the "What's New in Version" section in iTunes Producer.

Windows update cannot currently check for updates

when I Try to update my windows 7 by clicking on windows update ( control panel or windows update) I get some notification saying
"windows update cannot currently check for updates because of the service is not running you may need to restart the computer"
I have tried with 2 solution in internet found but not successeded as below :
1) stop windows update service and rename " SoftwareDistribution" folder in order to be created later after restart aformentioned service" and some solution as for stop "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" before windows
update service even though didnt pass.
2) run windows update troubleshooter to idnetify the problems and fix the issue , it tells me its fixed but nothing there.
I need your support please if somebody encounter that to let me run my windows Update for more information its colored with red.

First of all ,I would you suggest to check the status of the "Windows update "services " and "Background Intelligent Transfer service".Run "Services.msc" to open the services manager.
Someone has tried the following methods to resolve the similar issue,please have a try :
1.go into Windows Update and change the settings to "Never check for updates (not recommended)", click OK, and then change it back to "Install updates automatically".
2.Turn on the Windows Defender and update it .
