RemoteApp 2012 R2 CAL issue

Hi,
Could we use this CAL in the Windows Server 2012 R2 RemoteApp Service.
If cannot, which CAL should I need to purchase?
The site will have 5 - 8 users to use the RemoteApp Service.

Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
As per my knowledge, sorry to inform you that you can’t use current CAL for RemoteApp.
For this you need to install RDS Licensing role on server 2012 R2, activate the license server and then need to purchase and install RDS CAL (There are 2 varieties of RDS CAL: Per User CAL or Per Device CAL) depending on your requirement. In your case, I suggest
you to purchase user CAL depending upon your requirement.
When you purchase RDS CAL for server 2012 R2 it can be used to manage for lower version of OS (such as server 2003, 2008\R2, and 2012\R2) but the reverse can’t be possible.

  • Windows Server 2012 RDS CALS on Windows Server 2008 R2 Licensing Server

    Hi,
at the moment we are installing the first couple of Windows Server 2012 in our infrastructure.
Some of them have installed RDS.
Now we are wondering whether it is possible to use our existing Windows Server 2008 R2 licensing server for serving the licenses we have (yes we to have new Windows Server 2012 RDS CALS) or whether we have to install a new host based on Windows Server 2012.
We tried to add the new license to the 2008 R2 licensing server, but it is not possible. The licensing manager's error message: "The license code contains invalid characters or not enough characters."
    Is there any other way?
    Thanks and regards

    Hi matt_will_fix_it,
    How about Windows 2012 R2 ?
Will a Windows 2012 RD Licensing server provide licences to a Windows 2012 R2 server?
I have not tested it, but it should work.  Server 2012 R2 requires the same RDS CAL version as Server 2012.  If you try it and have an issue please reply back.

  • Windows 2012 RDS CALs - OLP NL downgrade to Windows 2003 TS CALs

    Hi,
Hope someone can shed some light on this inquiry
I plans to purchase the following:
2x Windows 2014 SQL STD 2 Core License OLP NL
30 Windows 2012 RDS CALs (User or Device) OLP NL
               Breakdown example
                Site A = 10
                Site B = 5
                Site C = 15
Existing servers are Windows 2003 R2 STD running Terminal Services
Tried setting up a Windows 2003 R2 TS Server and install TS Roles & Licensing Manager
    Questions.
     1. When I tried to add Windows 2003 TS CALs - OLP NL, the activation screen requires to enter the Authorization & License numbers.
Can I use the Authorization and License number of the newly purchased Windows 2012 RDS CALs on the Windows 2003 TS Server?
     2. Should I get a separate Authorization & License number per site? (In the example above 3x Authorization & License numbers). Or can we use a single Authorization & License number for all sites? Each site is independent from each
    other.
     3. As I understand, SQL 2014 can be downgraded to any prior previous version at the same editions. (as far as SQL 2000, provided he has the installer), If client has an existing SQL 2003 STD activated already, does he need to change the license key?
    Thanks,
    Paul

    Hi Paul,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server forum.
Yes, you can use newly purchased server 2012 RDS CAL on server 2003 terminal server.

For detail regarding the licensee issue I suggest you to contact MS Volume Licensing.
As per my research, I think you don’t have to change the old license key if client already have the key. And in regards to SQL server you can have a look over beneath article.

  • Multiple RDS Device CALs Issued through Windows 2003 RDS Hosts

    Environment
Windows 2012 R2 RDS license server issuing device CALs
    5 Citrix farms (PS4, PS4.5, XA5, XA6, and XA6.5)
    Symptoms
    - RDS device CALs issued through the PS4/Windows 2003 R2 and PS4.5/Windows 2003 R2 servers show the Citrix server name in the Window 2012 R2 RD license manager console instead of the workstation name (See below).
    - The PS4/Windows 2003 R2 and PS4.5/Windows 2003 R2 servers are issuing a large number of device CALs to workstations.  For example, we have two PS4/Windows 2003 R2 servers that publish a single application.  There are 20 users
of the applications with dedicated workstations that should all have a device CAL, but everyday I see device CALs being issued from these servers (See below).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

    Hi Scott,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Have you find any Error\Event Id for this case?
From the description it appears that there is some misconfiguration for redirecting the server during load balancing the device CAL among the server and that’s why device is getting misplaced. You can please relook at configuration for License server with following

  • Terminal Server Licensing 2003 to 2012 mixed environment - issue

We have 1 2003 Terminal Server and 1 2012 RDSH. We recently
migrated 2003 Terminal License Server to new 2012 RD Licensing Server.
On 2012 RD Licensing Server we have been instaled 20 - 2012 RDS Per Device Cal and 20 - 2003 TS Per Device Cal.
    I sometimes works on Terminal
Server 2003 or 2012. And here is a problem with issued Terminal license for Device. When I Logoff from
2003 TS and then I log in to 2012 RDS - the 2012 RD Licensing Server issued new license for my computer on this same name. When I do the same in the reverse order - the 2012
RD Licensing Server issued next new license for my computer. I do this several times and now I have 10 permanent 2012 RDS license issued for this same computer with this same name, and 5 temporary 2012 RDS license issued for this same computer and 1 temporary
2003 TS for this same computer.
I have no idea how resolve this problem.

My NOTES have stopped syncing since 08 Oct 2012 - anybody same issues ?

    Hi!
No, you're not alone. Same behavior here since upgrading my 3g to OS4:
Every time I turn on the check mark at the check box for "Sync notes with Outlook" and choosing "Use" the check mark disappears so the following sync process is working without notes syncronisation.
I tried several things without results. Are there any ideas in the meantime?

  • Remoteapp Server 2012 std drawing issues

    Hello!
We are hosting an application trough Remoteapp on Server 2012 std. We have been struggling with a screen drawing issue where for example text in a textbox does not appear unless the textbox is clicked or borders of boxes are hidden until moving mouse over
them. Running the application trough full rdp session works perfectly. Our client machines are running on Windows 7 with latest updates.
We have tried changing some remoteFX settings but nothing seems to be working. Does anybody have solution or ideas what might work for the described issue?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Any furhter update for your case. Did you check with manufacture of your application, is this supported as RemoteApp?
As test what happens when you publish paint or notepad as RemoteApp, can you work easily with that.

  • RemoteApp 2012 R2 Restrict Access to Session Host Desktop

Here is our current situation: I have set up Remote Desktop Services on Server 2012 R2 and published RemoteApp programs. Everything works great with load balancing, collections, etc... and I have been very impressed. However, as it always has been an issue,
I have always had the question of how to allow users to access RemoteApp applications on the session host without allowing them to RDP directly onto the server to access the server desktop. Obviously, you have to add them to remote desktop users group and
they need to be allowed to access over RDP so I figure that the next best thing is to restrict access to the desktop should they manually type the name into an RDP client connection. I know you couldn't restrict them from using mstsc.exe because they need
that to open the RemoteApp since it just uses RDP and I am aware of using GPO's to restrict access to drives and many other things but I would like to remove the desktop altogether. Would it be plausible to remove the GUI feature and restrict access to CMD
and SCONFIG through Server Manager and still allow the session host to present RemoteApp applications or is there a better way to approach this? I figured if I just remove the GUI and access to cmd and sconfig then if they logged on, they would get a blank
screen. Thank you in advance for your time!

    Hi,
One technique for this is to set the Custom User Interface group policy setting to logoff.exe.  You would have the GPO apply to normal users, but not applied to Domain Admins (or other users that you need to have full desktop).
    User Configuration\Administrative Templates\System
    Custom User Interface     Enabled
    Interface file name: %systemroot%\system32\logoff.exe
You should also use NTFS permissions, group policy settings, AppLocker, etc., to further restrict what users are able to do.

  • RemoteApp 2012 problem on windows XP.

    Hello
I have a problem with RemoteApp web access on Windows Server 2012 when i connect with Windows XP clients. The internet explorer shows the credential promt always and i can not access to the server. I have not this problem when i connect with windows 7 clients
with Remote Desktop client 8.1. Remote Desktop client 8.1 is not available on windows XP but i have installed 7.0 RDC but the problem continues.
What i have to do to correct this problem?
    Thanks and sorry my english.

When you say "The internet explorer shows the credential prompt always and i can not access to the server" do you mean it simply keeps re-prompting you to login and doesn't get any further, or are you getting any error messages?
Since you've already installed RDC 7.0, the other two things to check are that the XP machine is running SP3, and that you've enabled CredSSP on there (as it's not enabled by default on XP). To check this, click Start > All Programs > Accessories >
Remote Desktop Connection, then click the little computer icon in the title bar, left of the words "remote desktop connection", then choose "about", or "help > about". If it says "Network Level Authentication not supported"
or has no reference to this at all, you need to enable it. If it's not enabled then have a look at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951608 which has instructions for enabling it.
Depending on the options enabled on the 2012 server, it's possible however that you simply can't connect from an XP machine at all. Some of the newer features on 2012 RDP don't support XP as they rely on functionality that is missing from XP. Annoyingly
I can't find a reference to what those features at right now, but I know with our setup (with those features disabled currently) we're able to support XP clients, but have are intending to end support for it so we can enable those features and improve functionality
    for the newer clients.

  • Macbook Air mid-2012 battery life issues -- a possible culprit ?

    Hi all,
I've posted and followed a thread regarding diminished battery life for the mid-2012 MBA, when Mountain Lion was released. I never could fix the problem, was contacted by Apple but that didn't solve anything either.
The troubles I was (and still am) having with my MBA were :
Battery life reduced by at least 33% when I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion, following a firmware update.
No change when I clean installed ML.
No change when I upgraded, and then clean installed Mavericks.
My battery, after 13 months of use, had its capacity reduced to 70-80%, and has now been stable for one year at 70-80% capacity. It now lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours, and has never lasted longer than 5 hours since I upgraded to ML, which was a few weeks after the laptop was purchased...
I've tried everything that was posted on the forums, SMC resets, etc. Now to the (maybe) interesting stuff.
I stumbled today on something interesting. I was researching my issue to see if people with the same laptop, that followed the same firmware upgrade path than I did had similar issues. Long story short, a forum post led me to something interesting, located at /System/Library/Extensions/IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/ACPI_SM C_PlatformPlugin.kext/Contents/Resources
DISCLAIMER Whatever you do, do not try to remove / move anything in this folder.
What is interesting is that my Macbook Air has the following identifier : MacBookAir5,2. However, in the above-mentioned folder, there is no MacBookAir5_2.plist, it stops at 4_2.plist and then goes on to MBP models. Now, the question that I have is could the fact that this plist is missing be related to my battery issues ? In the sense that without this file, the kernel does not know how to properly manage the power, read the battery status / thermal sensors ?
I would really love to fix this 2-year old issue that has been plaguing my laptop ever since I purchased it.
    Cheers,
    Hadrien

Edited to add a screenshot of the plists directory.

I leave my LithiumIon battery plugged in when near an outlet.  But I use it on battery down to 40% at least once a month.
Using Coconut battery (download from macupdate.com) you see my battery is just fine after 18 months:

  • 2012 rMBP Desktop Issue w/ Mavericks

    Hi all,
I'm on a 15" retina macbook pro from 2012, and use multiple desktops for different applications. Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks, dekstops 2 and 3 have been randomly switching places, which is getting very annoying. While it's not an enormous issue, it messes with my workflow, and just generally is frustrating. Anyone else experiencing anything similar? If so, has anyone found a fix?
    Thanks!

Thanks! Was this a setting in Mountain Lion? If so, I wonder why it never affected me before. Regardless, seems like a rather silly setting for people like me... obviously it tends to totally screw us up!

  • Hyper-V 2012 r2 Clustering issue

    Hi All
We have the following issue and I just thought of why this could be happening
We are using a 3 node cluster with a witness disk
The problem is that the nodes in the cluster fail daily and its not a specific node it happens to any of them, but there is always 1 online thou
Here is the specs we are running :
*3 identical high end desktop hardware
    *Server 2012 std R2
*ISCSI using free nas OS on a separate physical machine
*Teamed NIC's for Management, Clustering, ISCSI and Migration with weights defined
*9 VM's shared on this cluster between the 3
*The server have the exact same config except for the one server which is also running hyper-v with 1 vm which has our AD on
*Currently there is no backup software running for these VM's
*All the update have been done but no hot-fixes have applied
My theory why the system is crashing is because the 1 Host is running the AD VM on the HyperV which is different setup compared to the other servers.
Could this be the issue ?
    Thanks

What does the validation wizard tell you?  The validation wizard should always be the first thing to run when trying to troubleshoot, as it does hundreds of tests on the environment and will alert you to anything it finds wrong or questionable.
Out of the box, it sounds like you are running an unsupported configuration since you state it is configured with "3 identical high end desktop hardware".  One of the basic requirements of clustering is that you use hardware that the manufacturer
has tested for supporting Windows Server 2012 R2.
www.windowsservercatalog.com lists all that hardware.  Since you are using desktops, I feel comfortable in saying that those servers are most likely not on the list.  That is not to say that clustering won't work, but it does mean that you are
running an unsupported configuration.  Since clustering is usually done to provide highly available access to business critical applications, building the environment on unsupported hardware is not a good way to start.  This also means that you might
be using NICs that are not of server quality, meaning that you may be running into networking issues, as suggested by Darren.  Then there is your iSCSI configuration.  The validation wizard will tell you if you have issues with the storage - a free
NAS OS may not provide the features necessary for clustering.  Suggestion is to get proper hardware.  What you are describing might be okay for a learning lab, but not for production.

  • IMac (27-inch, Late 2013) with iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) in TDM issue

With the late-2013 iMac 27" (3.5 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 3 TB Fusion, Mavericks 10.9.4) as the primary and the late-2012 iMac 27" (3.4 GHz, 16 GB RAM, 3 TB Fusion, Yosemite Beta 10.10) in TDM, the screen on the target display blinks off and on (goes black and comes right back after a split second). It happens intermittently, regardless of which Thunderbolt port is used to connect the two computers. The other Thunderbolt port on the primary is used to connect two external FW800 drives via a Thunderbolt-to-FW800 adapter.
Through exhaustive testing, and in constant consultation with AppleCare senior advisors, I have seemingly ruled out all obvious potential hardware or software culprits:
An AVR is feeding both computers consistent power.
Each computer's RAM and video cards have been tested with TechTool Pro 7: everything passed.
The Thunderbolt cable has been replaced.
Reset the NVRAM and SMC on both computers (though with all the testing I've done since, it might not hurt to do this again).
Both computers have been running the latest version of OS X (the target display is currently running Yosemite Beta).
Made sure to enable TDM after the primary iMac has completed its full startup process.
Turned down the display brightness on both computers.
Trashed the com.apple.windowserver.plist file on the late-2013 iMac.
None of these steps have resolved the problem and I am having NO other issues with either computer. I'm stumped, as are the AppleCare senior advisors I've been working with. This issue has been present since I first connected these two computers this way. Design flaw not revealed in testing? Problem part not revealed in testing?
Anyone here seen anything like this or have any ideas of what else I can try? Help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Dana

Purchase a Windows PC?? Gasp, indeed! No, after months of software and hardware troubleshooting with an AppleCare senior advisor, and me refusing to believe my brand new 2013 iMac could have a hardware defect, I finally took my entire configuration (both iMacs, voltage regulator, back-UPS) in to my local Apple Store. They were able to replicate the issue, but then misdiagnosed the problem and replaced an internal display cable. Within minutes of reconnecting everything at home, the problem returned. So AppleCare sent an authorized service tech to my home to replace the logic board. That seems to have finally solved the problem. Inconveniently, the tech didn't have what he needed to flash the new logic board with my serial number right then, so I had to wait two weeks to get that done. It did finally get done though, and now all is well.
    Good luck with your issue!
