Renaming 2000 Computer Problem

Hi,
I've had to rename my computer and now I can't access or start my database. I got the Error ORA-12545. I read in this forum about creating an alias for the computer name in the Hosts file. I did that and now I get the message that the database is currently down and log in as SysDBA and start the database. I try that and it does not work.
Would you please guide me in the right direction? I am using Oracle 8i
Thanks in advance,

You need to provide a bit more information.
First, how does your internet connection get to your iMac? Is it direct from a cable or DSL modem? Is there a router in the network either built-in to the modem or a separate device? Do you have Internet Sharing turned on or just Sharing? Are you routing from the Ethernet port to the Airport on your iMac? How is the Airport connection setup in Network preferences? Do you have security disabled or enabled?
Have you been to the Airport Support site? Have you used your online Help - select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for 'airport' and 'sharing' to find relevant articles.

  • Windows 2000 boot problem

I have just moved my system to the new MX-6585 board - Did an Windows 2000 "upgrade" to initiate total hardware scan.
System works ok, when it has booted, but booting is sooo slow.
Found a Microsoft article describing the problem:
    SYMPTOMS
After you choose to start Windows from the Boot menu, you may experience a long delay (or pause) before your computer finishes starting. Note that this delay may range from 10 seconds to a minute. Also, this delay occurs before the Starting Windows progress bar appears, and your computer may appear to stop responding (hang) during this time.
    CAUSE
This behavior can occur if Windows is installed on a drive or a partition to which Windows cannot gain access with normal Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) INT-13 or INT-13 extension calls. When Windows Setup determines it cannot use BIOS calls to start, it uses scsi() or signature() syntax in the Boot.ini file instead of multi() syntax.
My question is: Does MX-6585/BIOS in any way hinder the INT-13 calls to my Adaptec 2940???

Thanks! I sent the following message:
There are no IDE devices in my system, only SCSI. My hd is an IBM Ultrastar 36XP DRHS-36D. When I start the system up, the SCSI & MSI BIOS screens display normally, then BOOT.INI appears. After I select one of my NT-type OS's (NT4, W2K, WXP), there is a 30-second delay between the time I press the Enter key at the BOOT.INI screen and the time the OS actually starts to boot. (The BOOT.INI countdown time is limited to 5 seconds. I am *not* talking about this time.)
Since the same hardware was transferred from another installation (with a non-MSI mb) in which the same Adaptec drivers were used but this 30-second delay did not occur, the delay appears to be due to the MSI BIOS. Interestingly, W98 is also installed on this hd and it appears in the BOOT.INI list. When I start up W98, the 30-second delay does not occur -- as soon as I press the Enter key, W98 starts to boot.
Other end users have complained about this same boot delay. See the post "Windows 2000 boot problem" found in the MSI user forum here: http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/viewindex.php?threadid=6970&boardid=10&page=1
I'd estimate our chances of success at 1%. Still, it's far better to complain and not be heard than never complain. That way, we get to complain even more.

  • Itunes says I need itunes 11.1 version or later on my iphone before it will recognise the iphone. How do I update itunes on my iphone or is it a computer problem?

I have been trying to sync/back up my iphone and ipad but iTunes is saying I need to update my iphone to version 11.1 or later. I thought my phone was up to date and I can't seem to update iTunes on my phone anyway. Does anyone know how to update iTunes on my phone or is it a computer problem? I've been having problems with iTunes on my PC so I re-installed it but it's been a nightmare trying to get it to work.
This is the message I receive says " The iphone 'iPhone' cannot be used because it requires iTunes version 11.1 or later. Go to www.itunes.com.au to download the latest version of iTunes". I get a similar one for my iPad too.
When I go to the website I can only find the download for my PC but not the iPhone.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you!

No, your iPhone i s telling you that you need iTunes 11.1 or greater on your computer in order to sync with the computer.

Then you should fix this issue with iTunes before you try to sync your iPhone to it.

How do I get my Mac, G5, 10.5.8, to print?  Printer tech support thinks it is a computer problem.  Any ideas?

    Hi Dwayne,
If necessary (unless your operating system already contains the printer software needed), a downloadable driver for a Deskjet 5420v Photo Printer (is this the exact model?) and Mac OS 10.5 appears to exist according to the support web page below:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=1105187&lc=en&cc=us& dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us
To begin with, have you verified that the printer is able to print at all (that the print cartridges are OK, et cetera)? This can usually be done by trying to print a test page (from the computer) via an HP printer utility, or possibly by generating a self-test page (without a connected computer) using an appropriate button combination on the printer itself.

  • What is the best way to remotely access my sister in laws Mac who lives in another city to help her with her computer problems?

    as stated above
What is the best way to remotely access my sister in laws Mac who lives in another city to help her with her computer problems?

The best way? Get her to bring it to you, especially if she makes good cakes.
Apples Back to my Mac isn't really suitable for this - it is designed for a single person who wants their Apple ID on the system. It would mean she would have to share hers with you & you would also have to setup her Apple ID on your Mac - it is messy & causes trouble with iCloud, iTunes etc.
You can try Messages if she is able to begin a session with you, see the 'invite to share screen' in the menus, weirdly you need to use a service that isn't from Apple.
    Messages (Mavericks): Share your screen
It may be better if you to setup LogMeIn or GoToMyPC. They should 'dial out' & maintain a constant connection so you can login whenever the Mac is powered up. It won't, require a human to initiate the process at the other end, just be aware that the router may cause issues depending on what is configured, you may need settings to enable automatic port forwarding - it really depend on which option you choose.

  • More of a computer problem but...

I recently had some computer problems and ran a System Restore on my computer. Once it restarted and "restored" everything, my itunes would no longer open. It says "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed." So I tried to install the latest version of itunes hoping to replace whatever had been lost that was stopping it from opening. However, Itunes gets stuck in the setup and won't save to my computer. The message says "The path... cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again, or try to find the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product iTunes."
My final hope was that if I uninstalled it completely and started from scratch it would work, but now I get the same message as above when it tries to uninstall as well.
If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it, at this point I'm stuck with an iTunes that won't open, reinstall, or uninstall. I've also tried plugging in my Ipod, and it connects to something and says not to disconnect it, but nothing will open or run on my computer. Help please!

With that one, let's try the following procedure.
First, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. If it goes, good. If it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to iTunes.
Next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. Use it to clear any existing iTunes and/or QuickTime installation configuration information from the PC. (Launch Windows Installer CleanUp, find any iTunes and/or QuickTime entries in the list of programs in CleanUp, select those entries, and click “remove”.)

Next, use the the following document as a guide for manual removal of leftover iTunes and QuickTime program files:

  • Renaming offline computer account on AD as part of OSD

I am looking for an automated solution to a Windows 7 "rebuild" problem and here is the story:
We periodically have computer hard disk failures and the machines will be rebuilt on a new hard disk at the build center using the model-specific hardware "carcass". Once the hard disk is built, it will be sent over to the affected user and a field
engineer will swap the hard disks onsite and do the domain join work and anything else necessary so as to have the old computer name back.
To explain this further, say if the computer which had a hard disk failure is 123 (i.e. the computer name), we build a new Windows 7 machine on a new hard disk with the computer name as 123X. Once this machine is fully built, we need to delete the old 123
account from the AD and rename the newly built 123X to 123 (and do the domain re-join etc...).
However, the requirement is that the old 123 computer account should still stay in the domain for some time after the new machine is built (i.e. for data recovery/bit locker operations purposes if needed) which means we do not ideally want to delete the
old 123 computer account on the AD immediately, instead, we want to rename it as 123XY even though the old 123 computer is no longer physically active.
Is this technically possible? If so, can it be automated as part of SCCM OSD TS?
Hope I have not introduced too much of confusion. The problem has been reported by the build team and they have asked me to come up with an automated solution and I have tried to explain the problem above to the extent I have understood it. Currently what
they do is before deleting the computer account 123 from the AD, they back up its bitlocker recovery key information manually in order to use it later on should the need arise.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Garth,
Owing to the complexity it would have introduced into the build process to differently process new builds/rebuilds/hard disk replacement etc. we ended up ditching that option, instead went for a PowerShell scheduled task which runs every week and dumps the
bitlocker recovery info into a super-secret location :)
Below is the script if you are interested....
#Tweak the below line to point to the OU in your AD org where all the bitlockered computer objects reside
#It will run recursively against all sub-OUs.
    $SearchBase = "ou=workstations,dc=contoso,dc=ad,dc=local";
#check if the output folder exists;Create it if it doesn't
    If ((Test-Path -path "$(Split-Path $SCRIPT:MyInvocation.MyCommand.Path -parent)\Reports" -PathType Container) -eq $false) {
    New-Item -path (Split-Path $SCRIPT:MyInvocation.MyCommand.Path -parent) -name 'Reports' -itemtype directory | Out-Null;
#set up the output csv name. An example output csv name will be BLR_15032015_Sunday.csv
    $OutputCSV = "$(Split-Path $SCRIPT:MyInvocation.MyCommand.Path -parent)\Reports\BLR_$(Get-Date -format "ddMMyyyy")_$((Get-Date).DayOfWeek).csv"
    Get-ADComputer -filter * -SearchBase $SearchBase -SearchScope Subtree -ResultSetSize $null -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Foreach-Object {
    $Compname=$_.name;
    Get-ADObject -Filter 'ObjectClass -eq "msFVE-RecoveryInformation"' -SearchBase $_.DistinguishedName -Properties created,name,msFVE-RecoveryPassword -ResultSetSize $null -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
    Select-Object @{Name="Computer Name";Expression={$Compname}},
    @{Name="Date Added";Expression={$_.created}},
    @{Name="Password ID";Expression={$_.name -match '\{.+\}' | Out-Null;($matches[0]).Trim();}},
    @{Name="Recovery Password";Expression={$_."msFVE-RecoveryPassword"}}
    } | Sort-Object -Property @{Expression="Computer Name";Descending=$false},@{Expression="Date Added";Descending=$true} | Export-CSV -force -Path $OutputCSV -NoTypeInformation
Probably not what you would have been hoping for but it has worked really well for us in the last 6 months and there has never been a lost bitlocker key related incidence escalated by the customer as we always have the backup reports to go back to.
Apologies, it was impolite of me not to update this thread clarifying what I ended up doing.

  • Windows 2000 connection problems (solved)

I have a Windows 2000 box that was working fine with DSL and cable but when we moved and got FiOS, it didn't work.  It has a RealTek RTL 8139(a) PCI fast controller built in to the motherboard that is connected to the port of the back of the Westell 9100em router.  The symptoms were very strange: I could ping the router and load the router web page.  However, I could not load any webpages outside of the router.  DNS was working (lookups were fine and fast) but it seemed like no packets ever came back to me - it was like the TTL was set too small or something - they just died in the ether.  Traceroutes would get about a dozen hops out and then time-out.  I figured there was a problem with the ethernet controller, so I switched to a 10/100 Hawking USB-to-ethernet adapter.  However, this showed the same problem.  Then, I switched to a USB wireless adapter.  Again, same problem.  At this point, it was a total mystery.  There didn't seem to be a problem with a particular adapter and I knew it wasn't a problem with FiOS since I had multiple wired and wireless machines (XP,Mac,Linux) in the house with no problems whatsoever.
I had read on these forums some problems people were having with RealTek 8139 adapters: http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-Internet/Problems-with-the-Fios-20-5-connection-speed-in-my-area-d... so I did a google search on "windows 2000 realtek fios" and found this:  http://www.testmy.net/t-19923  This was exactly the same problem I was having, so I did what was suggested: Uninstall TCP/IP and the Microsoft services/clients from the ethernet adapter, reboot, then reinstall the protocols and services...  And it worked!  I can now load up web pages with no problems.
Even though I was a 25/15 customer, I was pretty happy to get a 7/7 service (according to Verizon's speed tests) after not being able to get any http connection at all previously.  For the heck of it, I tried the speed optimizer tool: http://www2.verizon.net/help/fios_settings/optimizer/  After rebooting the machine, I am now getting 25 down and 23 up on Verizon's test and 26 down and 13 up according to the speakeasy test.
I guess the lesson for me is that FiOS is unlike DSL or cable - you might not be able to just plug your computer in and have it work optimally or work at all.  But if you tweak it just right, it works pretty well

  • Mountain Lion renaming my computer

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I get a message that another machine on my network is using my computers name. It renames my machine by adding 1 to the previous name. I only have one other computer on my network and it uses a different name. When it gets to 40, I change back to the orginal name in the sharing preferences. Any idea as to what is going on?

Okay... this is embarassing.  After spending a bunch of time with an Apple tech representative I figured out the problem:
After changing the name of the computer (System Preferences/Sharing), I was clicking on the lock icon to prevent further changes (as though I was saving what I had done when changing the name).  THAT was the problem!
The RIGHT thing to do was to simply close out of preferences to save the name change!  Clicking on the lock un-did the name change!
    So simple...

  • Program Crashes on Windows 2000 Computer

This post is a little long, but I tried to provide as much information as possible.
Due to increased production volumes we added an additional test station. We have been having problems with a LabVIEW program crashing when I run the program on new test station I just installed. The program works fine on the older station but doesn’t on the new test station. The main difference I see is that the new station runs on Windows 2000 professional and the old station runs on Windows NT 4.0. The other difference is that new computer is faster. The program usually crashes after testing 12 devices (4 devices are tested simultaneously), so after the 3rd time through the test routine the program crashes. We can reload the program and test another 12 devices until the computer crashes again. It appears like program is crashing in the “Write 1 point to digital line.vi” because one of the digital lines is stuck high after it crashes. I have attached the library “Press Key.llb” for reference. The main vi is named “Press Key.vi” which controls the action/duration of digital lines for each test ( 0 through 32).
    Hardware/Software overview:
The Test Station consists of Pentium IV computer with four (4) National Instruments PCI MIO16E-1 DAQ cards and 1 PCI – GPIB card that communicates to a power supply.
The program is “written” in LabVIEW version 6.0. The program is built into an executable and runs with LabVIEW runtime engine. The program is rather large (2.5 MB)
The program uses the 4 DAQ boards to simultaneous acquire data from four devices under test. Two of the DAQ boards are also used to control relays that activate air cylinders. The air cylinder presses on specific keys on the devices under test. Once the devices are set, the 4 DAQ boards each take the another set of measurements. This process is repeated (Approximately 30 times) until the devices are complete.
Note: The program typically uses 184 MB of Ram
Computer 1: Old Station (In use for 2-3 years) Working fine
    Computer Pentium IV computer
    Processor Pentium IV 1 Ghz
    RAM 256 MB
Operating System Windows NT version 4.0
    NI DAQ Version 6.6
Computer 2: New Station Problems crashing
    Computer Pentium IV computer
    Processor Pentium IV 3.00 Ghz
    RAM 256 MB
    Operating System Windows 200 Professional
    NI DAQ Version 7.2
    Any Help would be appreciated!
    Thanks Jayme

Regarding the releasing of memory. Yes the "problem" computer memory starts at 184 MB and climbs to 197 MB right before it crashes. The "good" computer memory starts at 184 MB and stays there. They are both running the same exe file only different OS.
Yes I do use a DLL called LVDAQ.DLL. I this DLL is probably being called when the software crashes
When I generate the exe using LabVIEW application builder (on a Windows NT station) the lvdaq.DLL is created automatically. Is there a setting to define which library is created? or can I get this file from NI?

  • My iPhone 4 is no longer recognised by my laptop, and no longer registers being plugged in to charge, even though it will charge slowly if plugged in and turned off. It's not a cable problem or a computer problem, as I've checked these.

Hey, over the past couple of days my iPhone 4 (GMS, Model A1332, EMC 380B - running on iOS 7.1.2) has begun inexplicably intermittently not recognizing being plugged in to charge or being connected to my laptop. As of today, it has complete stopped recognizing being plugged in to charge or connected to the laptop.
If I plug it in to charge, whilst it is on, nothing happens and the battery drains.
If I plug it in to charge and turn in off, it will charge very very slowly - though it will charge fully after a long time.
When I connect it to my laptop, nothing happens - it doesn't appear in iTunes, and it doesn't charge or recognize being connected to the laptop (there is no charging symbol, no noise from either phone or computer registering the connection as it usual did, or another sign of any connection between the devices, though, again, it will charge very slowly if turned off).
I've ruled out the possibility of it being a cable problem, by using a friend's cable and finding that didn't allow it to recognize being plugged into the wall to be charged either, or being plugged into the computer.
My friend's cable does work on their own iPhone (ie, when plugged into the wall with their cable, their iPhone acknowledges this and charges properly, and when plugged into my computer with their cable both my computer and their iPhone recognize the connection).
So, it's definitely a problem with my iPhone itself, but I don't know what.
As I say, it will charge very slowly, if it's switched off whilst it's plugged in, but it won't acknowledge being plugged in, and will only drain if it is turned on whilst being plugged in - and it will not recognize being connect to my computer.
Please help me figure out what is wrong with it, as this is beyond annoying and I'm literally banging my head against the wall - the iPhone is little over a year old.
    Cheers.

  • IPod Classic not recognized by iTunes, claims to be wiped of all content, and causes computer problems when connected

I have an 80 GB iPod Classic that has suddenly developed severe problems. I'm running iTunes on Windows 7 64 bit.
It was working fine until last night, when I connected it to iTunes to add 6 songs. (Four of these were bought on Amazon.com and 2 ripped from CD's). It accepted the songs and played them fine when connected. When I clicked the icon in iTunes to eject the iPod, it came up with the "OK to Disconnect" and progress bar as usual. However, this time the progress bar didn't start to fill in. It just sat there.
After several minutes the progress bar finally filled in and returned to the menu... but instead of displaying the cover flow on the right side as usual, it showed a gray box with "No Music."
When I tried to re-connect it to my computer, iTunes would not recognize it. My computer also wouldn't recognize it at first... after several minutes, it came up as a generic removable device. Attempting to right-click on it or eject it from Windows was unsuccessful.
The iPod itself displayed "Connected" and alternated the plug image with the spinning arrows. It never said "Synchronizing" as it usually does.
Furthermore, my computer's performance degraded severely while the iPod was plugged in. iTunes itself froze, and even my other applications (such as my web browser) would not work correctly. This all cleared up as soon as I unplugged the iPod. If I tried to initialize iTunes while the iPod was plugged in, it would not open. It opened immediately when I unplugged the iPod.
Finally, despite claiming to have no music or other contents (it had contained only my iTunes music library, which is about 26.5 GB), in Settings the iPod claimed to have only 5.3 GB of free space.
Resetting the iPod with Select/Menu made no change. I was able to put it in diagnostic mode and check the hard drive, which gave these results:
    Retracts: 381
    Reallocs: 0
    Pending Sectors: 10
    PowerOn Hours: 417
    Smart/Stops: 381
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 15c
    Temp: Max 48c
When I put the iPod up to my ear I hear a steady, faint high-pitched sound and an occasional very faint crackling noise. When it shuts down the sound continues for a few seconds, then ends with a kind of squeaking sound.
The iPod is more than 5 years old, so I'm prepared for the probability that it's fried. But I'd like to try everything before I go ahead and spring for a new one.

The iPod's hard drive probably has data corruption.  That does not necessarily mean there is a hardware problem.  Hard drives, including the ones in computers, can develop data corruption.
Try putting the iPod into Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363
If it goes into Disk Mode, run iTunes on the computer and connect the iPod.  To eliminate other potential issues, you should disconnect other USB devices (you can leave standard keyboard/mouse connected), and connect the iPod to a direct USB port on the computer.
iTunes may prompt you to do a Restore, which you should do.  This will erase the iPod, re-install its software, and set it to default settings.  If the problem was only data corruption, and there is no hardware problems, the iPod should have a "fresh start."  You can sync it from your iTunes library.
If the iPod does not go into Disk Mode, or if doing a Restore fails, the iPod's hard drive may be faulty.
