Renaming movies causing Itunes to freeze (sort of a fix)

When I tried renaming movies in Itunes, it would freeze, leaving me no choice but to force quit. I originally went on here asking for help. I tried deleting the movie, renaming the file, and adding it back. Nope. I had to edit some clips in Movie Maker anyways, so while importing, I made sure the name was what I wanted. Nope again. Then I deleted my trash because I was sure my old movie files were in there. However, unlike deleting music, where it asks to keep the file or move to the trash, it'll delete the movie, but the file won't be moved to the trash. I assume this until I did a quick command+F to find the old files of the movie. I moved those to the trash, then emptied it. For some reason, I have duplicates of the same exact file, so make sure you don't accidentally delete the one you need. *(I found this helped: 1. move the file you need to a folder 2. Right click, check "get info" and move only identical ones (by date and time) at a time to the desktop. If the names are the same, it'll ask something about replacing the file. Say yes. 3. Move to the trash.
TL;DR delete the file from Itunes, find old files of the mp4 file on your computer, move those to the trash, make sure you're not deleting the ones you need*, empty the trash, add back into Itunes.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find anything for Itunes freezing up- I think that's something Apple has to fix (I even updated Itunes). I just found how to rename a file, which unfortunately, is not the click-once-and-edit-on-the-spot way, but hey, it worked. Honestly, I don't see it being fixed anytime soon.

If Itunes match fails to complete its scan process and is stuck in steps 1, 2 or 3 the following steps usually clears problems:
1. Hold option key (Mac) or shift key (PC) whilst turning of match. This clears genius/match cache.
2. Close iTunes. Optional - Reboot computer.
3. Open itunes and turn on match. Select "add this Computer" and see if process completes.
If you see the following when you go into the match screen and it has been likes this for a while, I suggest that you stop process and go to menu > store and select  update Itunes match:
You should see this if you progess on from "Sending information" to "waiting for Apple.. This should happen within minutes:
You should also add icloud status column to song view - go to menu > view> view options and tick box. This will tell you what has been Matched, Uploaded, Purchased, Inelligible, Duplicate or Waiting.
Tracks that are "Waiting" may include one or more corrupt tracks. You may have to remove all "Waiting" tracks from your library as it is not always clear which ones are causing the problem. Large / Long tracks that will be uploaded may be the cause of the problem.
Once you have removed the tracks, follow steps 1 to 3 again and see if process completes. You can then readd the tracks, a small number at a time until all your music is added.
If problem persists, you should consider creating an alternative itunes library. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1589.
This creates a new blank library. Turn on match and Select "add this Computer". Once process is complete you will see all the music that you have in match. If you see tracks with "waiting" Icloud status and are "greyed out", this may be the reason why the match process does not complete. Delete those tracks and go back to your original library. You may need to follow steps 1 to 3 above again.

  • Will not enough RAM cause iTunes to freeze?

My computer does not have the required RAM that Apple says you need for iTunes 9. Will this cause iTunes to freeze?

It's possible. Whenever a computer doesn't meet system requirements for a particular piece of software, it's possible the software may work just fine and it's also possible that some issues may be encountered. I ran iTunes 7 (required 512 MB RAM at least, as I recall) on an XP box with only 256 MB RAM. iTunes worked but lagged, and video playback was pretty much not an option.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can't rename movie in iTunes

I imported a few home movies into iTunes. However a few of them can't be renamed. What ever I tried, the name was reset to the old name. I've tried
renaming the name field in iTunes (directly in the list but also in the "Info"-Window - new file name is accepted but disappears
    copying the movie file to the desktop;
    deleting the movie from iTunes (I selected to delete the file too and verified that it was deleted);
    renaming the movie-file on the desktop to the desired name;
importing the renamed movie-file into iTunes
result: the renamed file appeared in the folder where the original file was but about half way through the copying process it is being renamed to the old name (under which it appears also in the iTunes list).
I should mention that the iTunes library is on a Synology DiskStation. ...urgently need help - any idea what can be done? Thanks!!

iTunes will rename the finder file name to match the "Name" column of the iTunes window. If you rename the file from the finder then play the file via iTuens it will again be renamed to match the "Name" column.
To rename items then do it from the iTunes window and not the finder. Also make suer the file is not locked.

  • Latest update causing iTunes to freeze and crash

Just curious as to why my iTunes keeps freezing ever since the latest update...it's driving me crazy!

  • IPod Classic causes iTunes to freeze

Recently iTunes has frozen every time I connect my iPod classic, it shows 'not responding' in the task manager and refuses to respond until I unplug my ipod, once I've done that a message comes up saying itunes has stopped responding and windows is looking for a solution. The ipod doesn't make it as far as being recognised by itunes, but it is by my computer, as when it is connected I am asked if I want to scan and fix.
I have Googled various solutions and eventually I have managed to format the ipod, then when I connected it to itunes it said it had detected a corruped ipod and I followed the steps to restore to factory settings which went ahead fine. However, now that my ipod is wiped of everything and I'd like to sync to put my songs etc back on there I am encountering the same problem where itunes just freezes as soon as it's plugged in.
Has anyone got any advice? I know that it is a problem with this specific iPod and not iTunes or the computer because everyone in the household has an iPod and they are all working fine.

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

If necessary, post the resultings numbers and we can verify what the next steps to take.

  • 160gb iPod Classic causes iTunes to freeze/crash

I have a 160gb iPod Classic and when plugged in the USB, it causes my iTunes to crash. My computer recognizes the iPod when plugged in but iTunes does not recognize the iPod and immediately freezes until I force shut down iTunes.  I have an updated version of iTunes, running it on Windows 7.  The iPod works when I am listening to it; however, there seems to be lagging and slower than normal controls compared to when I first purchased the iPod.  I have an iPod Nano that works while I plug it in the computer and iTunes does not crash.  iTunes also works normally when there is no iPod plugged in as well.

Having essentially the exact same problem. I have an iPod Classic 160GB but everytime I connect it to my laptop, iTunes freezes and I have to close it through Task Manager. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on an Acer Aspire 5551 with an AMD Athlon II P320 Dual-Core Processor.
The iPod plays music fine, although it is a little slower and less responsive than when I first had it (no track skips, just browsing menus). iTunes recognises my 8GB iTouch and remains responsive with that but for some reason it freezes when the Classic is connected. The Classic appears in My Computer but doesn't appear to be recognised by iTunes. As far as I'm aware my iTunes is up to date and it runs fine when nothing, or even my iTouch, is connected.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Rented movies cause itunes to crash - help please

When I try to play a rented movie, itunes crashes and I get the error message 'iTunes has stopped working'. According to the log, the error is caused by QuickTimeH264.qtx
Using the latest versions of iTunes and Quicktime. I've tried deleting the SC Info folder as suggested on another post, but no luck.
This happened a few weeks ago and after trying various things it seemed to fix itself and the movie played fine. Since then I've watched two movies with no issues. Then tonight, back to the same problem.
It's particularly frustrating as the 48 countdown has started even though the movie crashed right away.

On sugestion from Apple, I've uninstalled quicktime and reinstalled from a new download and the problem has gone.

  • Unable to watch movies in iTunes 9 - freezes on start

I received some iTunes gift cards for Christmas, so I downloaded and installed iTunes. After redeeming a gift card, I purchased and downloaded a movie. When I click on the movie the player comes up, but then nothing else happens -- the timer never advances from zero. I have tried this on two computers running Windows XP, both Compaqs. I have tried every solution on the Support site, including uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes, and still no joy. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem and been able to solve it? As of now, I'm stuck with gift certificates I can't use, plus I paid for a movie twice which has now expired. I would appreciate any help you could offer.
    Thanks,

Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas what to do?

  • Importing FCP Movie Causes DVDSP to Freeze

I have captured video from a Canon Mini DV GL2 to FCP. When I export the video using ANY format, DVC Video Pro, using current settings, or changing them, making self contained, recompressing all video or not... nothing matters... DVDSP locks up. The movie icon will turn black after I select the file to import as an asset, and then... the lovely little message "The Application DVD Studio Pro Quit Unexpectedly." This has only happened on the last two movies I've exported from FCP v5. I'm using OSX 10.4.8
I'm using DVDSP version 4. I"ve played these movies in other apps with no problem. I've resaved them with Quicktime.... no matter. No can import.

Well, sadly, I followed your string link, had high hopes. I changed the "Open With" to Quicktime, hid the general info, followed all procedures, to no avail. I can't even open the FCP movie in MOTION! It crashes too! Unfortunately, I can't go back to my previous version of Finder as I've updated my backup as well. Surely someone out there has overcome this problem??? I can't be the only one experiencing this can I be?

  • Movies/videos causing iTunes to shut down

My laptop recently crashed and the hard drive replaced. Fortunately all my music; movies; videos; and tv shows were on my Ipod classic. I reloaded itunes. Now the movies cause itunes to stop stating it cannot find the movie. The icon is there but no movie. The movies are still on my ipod and work great! I bought a new movie and it works fine no issues. Any ideas as to how to get my movies back onto the laptop so I can watch them Like I want to? The only thing I can think to do is to erase iTunes and start from scratch again. I can back up the ipod to another computer. ( I did that last time)

Now downloading my CD"s is creating the same problem. I now cannot even bring up the itunes on my laptop is has shut down due to movies/videos and CD downloads! What can I do? Please I need major help and calling itunes was useless they wanted to charge me for iTunes help!

  • Changing download order causes iTunes to stop responding

I suspect I have found a bug in iTunes 7.5.0.20 that is reproducable each and every time. iTunes stops responding, if I drag a show from the bottom of the download queue, to the top of the exposed queue list box, and then just above the list box, or somewhere in between the names of pending downloads. My situation may be rare, since I have a very long list of shows to download (about 30) in queue. On some tries to reorder the queue, I have been able to have one show move, only to have the second show I move up cause iTunes to freeze and stop responding.
I suspect this to be a reproducable error on any 7.5.0.20 iTunes Windows client that has an extended list of queued downloads. Has anyone else experience this problem?

J Sounds like we may have a similar issue. When I try to change to game mode it simply changes from entertainment mode to entertainment mode when I click on game mode. If I keep trying the console will go unresponsi've.
This didn't start until a few days ago and now it takes the computer 5-0min to shutdown.

  • Re-arranging spaced-out songs causes iTunes to lock up.

This is not so much a "problem," but just a sort of circumstance with the drag-and-drop method of iTunes playlists that I stumbled onto. I'll step you through what I did, but first, the issue:
On regular playlists, dragging and dropping multiple separated songs causes iTunes to freeze up, forcing a CtrlAltDel closure of the program.
    Here's what I mean:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/MICHAE2414/playlist.jpg
As soon as I let go of the mouse under those exact circumstances as seen in the picture -- a regular playlist with spaced-out songs selected for re-arrangement under the numbered column -- iTunes locks up on me.
Now, I realize that this is simply a user error since tracks shouldn't be dragged if selected like that, but it's unfortunate that the interface allows this and causes the application to crash without response.
This bug has been reproducible for me across any playlist, so long as the first ("1,2,3,etc") column is chosen and tracks are dragged about in the above fashion.
Can anyone reproduce this error? If so, then it's definitely a software issue. I'm currently using iTunes 6.0.3.5, but I'm assuming this has been present in many past versions as well -- possibly across the Mac platform also.
    Windows XP AMD 2800+ 1.60GHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB HD

I found some other people having the same problem and I think I figured it out:
Go to "Start" in Windows (I am assuming you are running Windows) and hit "Run..."
Type in "cmd" to get you into DOS command mode and then when the DOS command prompt window comes up type "NETSH WINSOCK RESET" and hit your "Enter" button.  Then reboot.  My phone just got done syncing and backing up and everything is back to normal.
Apparently there was a recent Windows update that caused issues with iTunes and Winsock and they won't play nice together until you do this.
I found this information in the forums and there were a couple of other things people suggested like clearing your sync history and backups in Preferences, but, some of the later posts said that it was the Winsock thing that did the trick.  Worked for me.  If it doesn't work for you, let me know and I'll try to find the full procedure and send it to you.

  • ITunes keeps freezing within 3 minutes of being opened (OSX, iTunes 11.04(4) )

    Hi All,
My iTunes application keeps freezing and I have no idea why. Whenever I open it now, regardless of what I do, it gives the spinning colorful pinwheel within a few minutes and doesn't go away until I kill the program. It happens if I do nothing at all and just leave the window open (not even touch the mouse or keyboard), if happens if I start to play a song (the song will keep playing, but iTunes will get unresponsive), it always happens D:
Has anyone else had a problem like this? Apologies for how difficult it is to troubleshoot, it doesn't seem that any action I'm doing is causing iTunes to freeze, it just stops responding.
It's been going on for a few days now. I'm all updated, tried restarting the computer... no idea what to do!!! Please help me.
    Thanks very much in advance!

Actually I think I figured it out. I think I was using a faulty link for one of my podcast subscriptions that was messing everything up (Tiny Desk Concerts Audio Podcast).
What tipped me off was that I noticed a down arrow icon and what looked like a status bar popping up in the top right corner of the screen just before it froze. I guess that's a podcast downloading indicator.
    Thanks all!

  • Itunes freezes when renaming movies or add illustration

Hi, itunes freezes when i try to renaming movies or add illustration for 30 secondes.
    Thanks you

After experiencing this probelm for forever and a day with countless minutes of time wasted, I HAVE A SOLUTION! Albeit one I stumbled on by accident.
Before you rename a file, double click the movie to start playing it, then "X" (close) out of the window playing to stop it playing. Then rename the file and it will work instantly.
Don't ask me why this works, it just does....!
