Rescue and Recovery with only one partition, what will happen? Thanks!

Hello, everyone! This is my question: If I do a clean installing of Windows 7 with only one partition(the C and I install the Rescue and Recovery tool, when I make a backup of the system by using the Rescue and Recovery then the backup file will be stored in the partition C:. So when I restore the system with the backup file later, if I can succeed and what will happen? Thanks.

Backups and restores will still work.  The risk is if something happens to your hard drive, then you would lose the backups as well.  For this reason it's a much better idea to store your backups somewhere else, such as USB hard drive or network.

  • Rescue and Recovery with T40 booting the system (XP) without restoring factory configuration

    (plus bas en français)
    Hi,
I've a T40 which I want to restore the factory configuration.
I've installed the up-to-date version of Rescue and Recovery but :
    - when launching Rescue & Recovery from XP, it does not offer to restore the factory configuration
    - at least, this is feasible when I press the "Access IBM" blue button when starting the computer...
    - ... even if factory configuration restore is available there, it does not work. Indeed, it asks me to confirm and then starts the computer again without restoring anything.
Can someone help me please ?
    Bonjour,

    hey sylvain,
for the Rescue and Recovery to work, did you make a backup of the system via recovery media ?

  • I'm trying to decide whether to buy ipad or cheaper tablet.  What is retina display and what is diff betw ipad and mini with only wifi? What is mini missing?

I'm trying to decide on tablet to buy -- what is the difference between mini and ipad?  What is retinal display?  Why do some have wifi only and some have wifi cellular?  Why would I need cellular?
I keep hearing that apple computers don't pick up viruses like pc (of which I have had my fair share) so that is why I am considering -- but there are some really attractive deals for cheaper tablets.

A simple answer to a loaded question?  Not here!
    1.     For starters, I can't recommend the newest iPad AIr or iPad Mini.  The previous versions worked perfectly though if you want to go the Apple route.  That alone will save you a few bucks.  Best Buy undercuts Apple prices by a few $$ and has bonus sales around this time of year.
    2.   You get what you pay for.  I like the Samsung Galaxy Tabs a lot.  Good hardware and software.  App store has plenty to offer.  You also have size options like you do with Apple.   Since I have the Galaxy S3 phone, the Galaxy tabs are very familiar.  The Surface (smaller one) is big for a tablet, it works great, but is subject to the frailties that plague PCs to some degree.   I don't like the keyboard, but do like the kickstand.   I don't know about the availability of Apps for the Surface, I think it may be a major downside to the device.  The Surface is not cheaper than iPad either.  As for the cheaper Tablets, they will be in the landfill before Apple introduces a new gadget (that's pretty often....)   The Kindle is still primarily, an eReader.
    3.   Wifi or wifi and cellular - If you have a smart phone and can tether a tablet, you don't need cellular on the tablet.  With more places offering free hot spots, wifi is more than adequate. ( I use very little cellular on my mini)
    4.    iTunes and the App store;  I will start by saying I am cheap.  If the App isn't free, it has to be really valuable to me or I won't buy it.  I paid for Pages on my iPad 2 years ago and I bought a password wallet that syncs on all my devices on all platforms.  Aside from that I buy music to add to the CDs I imported to iTunes.  If you don't like iTunes and don't want to use it, keep looking at android tablets.
    5.    ios 7 - Never has Apple made such a big deal and been so poorly prepared to introduce a new ios.  It has devoted Apple heads steamed.  I count myself one and have had no problems with my devices, educated user I hope, or just really lucky.
    6.    I really USE my tablet.  I use it for work, for financial management and communications.  I rarely have to resort to the desktop as almost everything is possible on the iPad.  I love it's portability!  Documents and data flow back and forth with the cloud I never worry about losing anything or finding anything.  Photos download automatically from my Android smart phone with Dropbox App and are instantly available to load on all devices.
    7.    If you are a big PC hacker type, the switch to ios is culture shock.  The first time on the new iMac I was at my wits end trying to navigate.  I only had to stop working so hard and it all fell into place.
    My personal experience:
I have the iPad 2, (wifi only) and the first mini (with 4G LTE) and I had a 4th generation iPod touch and now have a 5th Gen iPod touch (which I really like a lot).  My son has an iPhone 4S and the iPad with retina display.  Both my sons have had iPods through the years.
My 50 year old eyes prefer the bigger screen of iPad 2 and typing is much easier.  But I love the portability of the smaller tablet, so one for home, one for the road.  Thanks to iCloud what ever is on one is also on the other, documents, data, contacts, etc.   Retina display, my son has it, I don't, I can't say I miss it.  It does make pictures look better, if you are a photo person, the retina display is worth it.
I also have transitioned from PC to Apple completely, I bought an iMac 4 years ago and it is as fast as it was on day one, no crashes, repairs, viruses.  I just bought a Mac Mini and I also use Apple Airport extreme for router and I have an Apple TV (the only disappointment, I prefer the Roku 2)
I'm sure that was more than you asked for.....

Not without erasing what is currently on the iPod first, since an iPod can only be synced with one computer/iTunes library at a time.
A better way to go about it, is to copy everything currently on the iPod to your new iTunes library first.  Then connect it to iTunes and either choose the Erase and Sync option or restore the device to allow it to start syncing with the new library.

  • Boot into Rescue and Recovery but not Windows

Everytime my pc is powered on or restarted, it boots into Rescue and Recovery, but not Windows.
    What can I do?

    Hi,
first I would like to explain one thing, so that we are on the same page with the RnR partition.
Vista and XP are using different RnR partitions and the location of these aprtitions is placed on the HDD is different way, so that it can be used in conjuction with your Operating system.
So in the time, where you have used the XP and OS, the RnR partition was placed in the partition table on the end/back. DIrectly after you upgraded to the Vista and did not made any changes to the RnR partition, than it is still on the end/back, which is not the corect way. Becase the Vista should use the RnR partition, that should be placed on the begind/start/in the front of all the other partitions.
So in case there was no change made to the RnR partition, like relocation, or reinstall using the Vista RnR version, then you will not be able to boot into it.
So here is what I would advice you to do:
    - reinstall, or download and install the Vista version of RnR (the latest version) => this will rewrite the partition table and in case of need it will create the RnR partition.
    - use bmgr32.exe , which is located on your HDD by default to rewrite the partition table. Please start it from command line in follwing way:
    bmgr32.exe /phil
==> this will bring you all the command line options and you can use it based on this.
    NOTE:
Plase note, that once you captured some backups using the XP version of RnR , or a different version of RnR, then it's not possible to restor the backups using a different version.
Simple: you must use the exact same version of RnR for backup and also for the  restore process.
Let me know, if you have any more informations to this situation.
    Cheers

  • Rescue and Recovery

    Hello everyone,
I am looking forward to participate in this forum. Sorry to jump right off the bat. I wanted to use Rescue and Recovery to create backups of a Dell Laptop. I am fairly new to Rescue and Recovery and I don't feel completely conformtable loading it to the laptop. As I understand it, Rescue and Recovery will modify the MBR in order to create the service partition. What  is going to happen to a hard drive that doesn't have the partition and if it creates the partition on install, does that prevent it from finding the other partition?
The only way to work around ( that I can think about) is to create the image from the startup disk? Without installing Rescue and Recovery on the laptop's hard drive.
Thank you for all your input any help would be appreciate it. My main concern is to lose the content of the hard drive during and after installation of the software.
    Ilene.

I just re read the message and realized that it didn't make much sense. What I am trying to acomplished is to use Rescue and Recovery and install it in the machine and be able to create the image. I am just wondering if others have tried to use it in computers or laptops other than IBM hardware.
I played a little with the software and I think it is great.
    Thank you
    Ilene

  • Rescue and Recovery restore does not work because of incorrect display size

I am unable to restore my system when booting Rescue and Recovery from the Service Partition or DVD. R&R configures my monitor resolution as 640x480x16 but displays as if there we many more pixels available. The result is that only a portion of the screen is visible and crucial commands are cut off and unusable.
I have read elsewhere that this might be corrected by updating the DisplayResolution parameter in the WINBOM.INI files found in the \MININT and \MININT\SYSTEM32 directories. I have tried this, setting DisplayResolution=1024x768x16, resetting to the default 640x480x16 and even removing the parameter altogether, all to no effect. My monitor always comes up at 640x480 and screens are always cut off.
A puzzling feature of this problem is that Opera help screens do not exhibit this problem. They display at an appropriate size, maximize correctly and so on.
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Herb

  • Cannot Boot To Windows After Rescue And Recovery

I used the Rescue And Recovery disks (7 disks plus actually recovery cd) on my T42. I received the cd set direct from IBM. I've used the CDs in the past with no issues. This time after following the instructions and completing the restore, I cannot get the computer to boot to windows. It keeps going back to the Rescue And Recovery program. What can I do?

  • An Elephant stepped on my Thinkpad - Rescue and Recovery

My backup solution for my thinkpad is an external usb drive using Rescue and Recovery which I keep at my place of work. So if I lose my laptop or it gets stolen or an elephant steps on it (at the zoo?), I still have my backup.
And if the building burns down where the usb drive is stored, I still have my laptop which I always take home every night. I think its a pretty good redundancy solution. The only risk is if I go out for lunch, leaving the thinkpad in the office and the building burns down destroying the laptop and external hard drive together. Its a risk I'm willing to accept.
Now most backup systems have a "recovery disk" where if your computer stops working or is subject to one of the disasters mentioned above, you can load this disk into another computer, boot into a recovery operating environment and recover your precious files. Thinkpad's Rescue and Recovery system goes one step further where you can have the recovery environment on the usb hard drive itself. All you have to do is plug it in and turn on your computer to boot into the recovery operating system. Great idea!
Well I thought......and here is my dilemma....
If my thinkpad is stepped on by an elephant, I would naturally plug my usb drive into my desktop to recover my data files. The problem is, my desktop isn't a Lenovo...so the Rescue and Recovery operating environment doesn't load into memory. It seems to go into this continuous loop of trying to load but fails. Remember I don't want to install Rescue and Recovery onto my desktop, I just want it to load into memory so that I can get access to my back up and transfer my data files to my desktop until such time when I purchase another Thinkpad.
So my question to this forum is; is it true? is Rescue and Recovery crippled in this way that it only works on Lenovo branded machines, even if your Lenovo has been stepped on by an elephant and you don't have another Lenovo immediately on hand?
I mean, is the Rescue and Recovery back up solution, just an external hard drive or is it really a external hard drive and another Lenovo computer
Or is there something (I hope) I have to do in the desktop Bios to be able to get Rescue and Recovery working?
Just wondering...has anyone done a similar test?

    Hello,
Hopefully this email reaches you before an elephant steps on your ThinkPad.
You might find a white paper I wrote about a year ago of interest:  It's called Options for backing up your computer [PDF, 861KB] and goes over some of the various ways in which home and SOHO users can backup their systems.  It's product and operating system agnostic, so it doesn't get into specific recommendations for tools to use, but does go over the types of backup hardware and software available.  One thing it does not cover is cloud-based solutions, though, so that's something you'll want to look into separately.
You didn not mention which model of ThinkPad you had, but you might want to look into something like a Pelican Case for yours, if it fits.  While I'm not sure it would be very effective against elephants, it should give you a chance against probably anything smaller than one of the big cats.

  • Rescue and Recovery: Backup does not finish.

I very recently updated my Rescue and Recovery, now it runs version 4.21.12.0. When I do a backup, it does it just fine, but: After a message that the backup was done successfully, a message comes with a rotating hourglass, saying: "Finalizing backup, please wait..." This message stays forever and only goes away when I kill "Rescue and Recovery" with Windows' Task Manager. This did not happen with the previous version of Rescue and Recovery.
    a)  Does killing the Rescue and Recovery program at this point affect the actual backup files in a negative way? Or are they just fine, this being just a "cosmetic" problem"?
    b) Is this my problem somehow, or a programming bug of Rescue and Recovery that should disappear with the next release?
    Thank you for your help,
    Wolfgang

    hi there,
I have the same question as well. Just like you, I went to the task Manager, it states 'rescue and recovery running', then I did a right click, and go to its proces, I found out that the corresponding file "MsgBox.exe" have 00 value under CPU; and constant 6,496k under physical mem usage for hours, so I assumed that it will bea message box bug and shouldn't affect the backup dat. But again, I am not 100% sure. Guess i might wait for the answer as well.
