Samba - removing printer support [SOLVED]

Why am I getting entries in my /var/log/samba/smdb.log like this when I have (I thought) disabled printing in my /etc/samba/smb.conf?
$ tail /var/log/samba/smbd.log
[2011/11/18 09:34:38.293887, 0] printing/print_cups.c:110(cups_connect)

failed to retrieve printer list: NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL
Here is the my config:
$ cat /etc/samba/smb.conf
[global]
workgroup = adirondack
server string = nas
security = user
hosts allow = 192.168.1. 127.
log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
max log size = 50
socket options = TCP_NODELAY
disable spoolss = yes

comment = shares

valid users = facade,toad,princess
path = /media/media
EDIT:  Nevermind, just found this which seems to have taken care of the issue.

I have seen that error also. After some googling around I found the following:
Consider adding this line to "/etc/samba/smb.conf" to change the NETbios name resolution order:
name resolve order = lmhosts wins bcast host
If you do not have a WINS server, remove that label from the line.
Another option is to add "wins" to the "hosts" line in "/etc/nsswitch.conf"

  • Remove Printer stuck in Windows 8

    Windows 8 won't let me remove printer definitions that are not working.  Going into Control Panel/Devices and Printers and following the "remove printer" dialog results in some cases in the printer entering a permanent "being removed" status.  I think it may have something to do with failed print jobs still being stuck in the queue for the printer in question.
    Is there a way of forcibly removing unwanted printers?
    If the problem is indeed due to stuck print jobs, how do I get rid of these?

    Try using the Print Management tool.....follow these steps and let me know if this works
    Try these steps from the Start Screen
    1. Access the Charms bar (The pop out bar on the right hand side of the screen)
    2. Select Settings
    3. Under Settings select Tiles
    4. Ensure show administrative  tools is selected to Yes
    5. On the Start Screen select Print Management tile
    6. Once the tool opens look to the left and select custom filters
    7. Select All Drivers
    8. Select your printer  right click then select delete
    9. Under customer filters select All Printers
    10. If you see your printer there select it and right click and select delete.
    11. At this point I would suggest you restart you PC

  • Download usb printing support

    OK I have unfortunatly have windows 8.1 only because my old computer crashed and was forced to buy it. I hate it for my desktop. Aside from it having to restart IE all the time I am suddenly having problems with my printer. I have a HP Laserjet 1100.  Yes its old but it prints wonderfully. People think I must own an expensive printer when they see the copies. Anyway, the last time I printed on my computer was in October of 2014 and it printed fine. Suddenly it won't print now. I tried removing and reinstalling to no avail. I Dled the HP print and scan doctor. It said the drivers were installed but that I needed to click the Get Installer button to DLed the USB printing support.  I was expecting it to take me to a page where I could read a disclaimer and click a DL button but instead it to me to the main DL center page. So I did a search for USB printing support and tried DLing a couple different things but DR still says I need to DL the USB printing support. Can someone please get me off this ride.  Thank you!

    Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
    I am not a Laser Printer Expert;  I could possibly be wrong about this:
    I do not see an answer that contradicts that you have already found:  There is not a solution for Windows 8.1 for this vintage Printer.
    I spent some time looking at the Windows 7 solution and even for that OS the possibilities are severely limited -- the scan features are stripped and much of the printer's functionality are no longer available.  I would not recommend something so radical as downgrading to Windows 7 as a means to save the Printer.  You could print, maybe, after a bit of work -- but the functionality is gone.
    It might be time to consider an printer upgrade.   Sigh.  There are some good choices in new Laser Printers if you decide to give one of them a chance.
    Good Luck.

  • Generic IEEE 1284.4 printing support [ Edited ]Re: Generic IEEE 1284.4 printing support [ Edited ]

    Hi, I am following this post as I am having the same problem that I am trying to install LaserJet 1300 on my Window XP computer.  I see the post indicates IEEE 1284.4 printer support is included in Windows 7.  Does that mean I installed wrong printer driver?  From the device driver page, I only see driver for XP 64 bits, Windows 7 and Windows 8 and I selected Windows 7 32bits (because I have Windows XP 32 bits system).  or if there is IEEE 1284.4 printer support driver for Windows XP can download?

    The basic print driver for your printer are already included within Windows 7 32 bit OS.
    1. Plug a USB cable from your printer to your PC.
    2. Windows 7 is suppose to automatically detect and install built in drivers.
    NOTE: Computer may need to be connected to the internet in order for Windows to automatically download the updated built-in driver list.

    By the way, IEEE 1284.4 printing support refers to the much older bi-directional parallel port printers.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_1284
    Windows may be generically calling it that because it does not yet recognize your printer.

  • Attempted repair of 3.5.1 database yields message that it may "...remove data supported only in newer versions..."

    After starting Aperture with Command+Option keys, and being presented Photo Library First Aid, then choosing Repair Database radio button, then clicking on Repair --- I am presented with a dailogue:
    "This library has been opened with a newer version of Aperture.
    Repairing the library using this version of Aperture may remove data supported only in newer versions of Aperture."
    This does not add up, as I am running 3.5.1, which is the newest version.
    So, I am concerned about running the repair.
    Thoughts?
    Richard

    Richard, I am seeing the same. For some libraries Aperture seems to be confused about the version:
    My Aperture version is 3.5.1, the library is version 3.5.1, but still I am getting this message when trying to repair, even after repeated repairs.
    The repair does not seem to cause any harm, however, but I cannot recommend it as safe, as long as we do not know, what is causing this.
    I am seeing this only for libraries, that have been opened by the latest iPhoto 9.5.1. Is that the same for your Aperture libraries?
    -- Léonie
    Added: Repeated "Repair" does not help, but after one "rebuild", the version number will revert to normal and stick, and the warning is gone. But don't try to "rebuild" without first updating your backup of the Aperture library.

  • Removing printer marks

    how do you remove printer marks from your PDF
    document?

    ChrisMercianLabels wrote:
    In case it helps find the solution, the issue can be re-created by:
    1) Create a new Illustrator document with 1 artboard (number not important) and add some random shapes to it.
    2) Save the document as a PDF and under the Marks and Bleeds section tick the "All Printer's Marks".
    3) Create a new Illustrator document (again the number of artboards is not important).
    4) Place your previously created PDF in step 2 into your new document.
    5) Embed the PDF.
    Okay, all is normal up to this point.
    6) By either using the Direct Selection Tool and clicking down into the grouped image, delete the printer marks so you are just left with the random shapes created in step 1.
    This is where the discrepancy must creep in. The placed PDF with printer's marks comes in as a "clipping group" contained in a rectangle the size of its original artboard + printer's marks. It's possible the printer's marks themselves bring along some nested clipping paths too. How certain are you that you are deleting everything but the "random shapes created in step 1"? If you are not releasing the clipping path(s) and/or un-grouping anything, it's very possible you're leaving frames which have no stroke and no fill.
    7) Now try centring the artwork to the artboard and depending on which alignment option you choose the artwork will shift to the right or down.
    Do you work with "edges" or "bounding box" visible? When you select the artwork to align, does the bounding box tightly surround the objects, or is it still the size of the original placed PDF?

  • Removable printer head

    What Canon printer has removable printing heads, I will be using it for edible photo printing for cakes.

    Hi cupcake_lady,
    Canon has a few printers and multifunction units that use removable printheads.  When using edible inks, it is recommended that you contact the company that sells the ink that you will be using.  The printhead must be sanitized for food service use.  That company would be selling the printhead as well as the ink, so if you contact them, they would be able to tell you what Canon printers that they sell printheads and ink for.
