Searching / finding generic jpg file icons

I use the excellent Pinki utility (http://www.mkd.cc/pinki/) to replace generic jpg icons in the Finder with an image of the file contents. However, I have not yet discovered search parameter that will find all jpg files with generic icons. Is there some way to do that?
  Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Interesting question. I studied a comparison of two jpgs, one with a custom thumb and one without, looking at the metadata for both. I spotted the Finder flags as being different: the one without a custom thumb had this:
kMDItemFSFinderFlags == 0
while the one that sported an icon had this:
kMDItemFSFinderFlags == 1024
So I did two trial searches on my Pictures folder, using Command-F with the Kind set to Images, then used Raw Query (it is in the drop down list of Other in the criteria selection) and pasted in the above in two separate searches, and had the results returned in List view (this lets you see at a glance whether there is a custom icon or not, since those files without one will only show the generic icon in list view, while files with one show a wee little custom thumb). The search using the "0" showed nothing but generic icons in list view, while the search using "1024" returned only files that had a custom thumb.

  • Cannot find the downloads file icon in the dock

How do I get the downloads file icon into the dock? I can only access it by going into the Finder.

Drag the Downloads folder back to it's spot next to the Trash can and it will make a "alias" there again.

  • RAW/JPG - Aperture doesn't find the JPG files anymore

    Hello,
I have all my photos on an external hard drive (referenced). Yesterday I had to format this hard drive, so I copied all photos on the hard disk of my iMac, then formatted the external hard drive and then copied all the photos back there. The hard disk still has the same name, but Aperture didn't find my photos anymore. So I selected all photos in Aperture and choose the option to reconnect the images (sorry, don't know exactely how this option is called in English, because I'm using the german version). After some time my photos were all reconnected. But some of the photos, which are RAW/JPG (RAW Master), do find the RAW now, but I can't switch to the JPG. But this did not happen to all RAW/JPG...
So I tried to move some of these photos from my external hard drive to the Aperture library (again I don't know how this is called in English). Aperture moved the RAW files into the library, but not the JPG and I also got an error "null".
So my question is, how can I reconnect the JPGs? Hope you guys understand my problem
And before someone ask, sadly I didn't thought of moving all photos into the library instead of just copying them myself so I can format the external hard drive.

Which camera are the Raw files from?

  • Finder questions (changing file icons, moving files, home/e)

    Hello all!
I got my 17" Intel iMac just two days ago. Gorgeous machine, feeling very comfortable. I switched from Linux and there are a few things I can't figure out on my own, I'd appreciate if someone anmswers these simple questions.
    1. How can I change the icon which represents a certain file type?
    2. How can I "move" the files from a, say, removable drive to my local drive? When I drag the files it shows "+" in a circle and copies the card. But i want to move the files from it, not copy. Command+X and Command+V don't work.
    3. I am used to that home/end buttons bring to the beginning/end of a line, but in OS X they bring to the top/bottom of the page. Makes editing documents very hard. Is there a way to change it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Artemiy.

PHP and CSS files are associated with XCode but the icon is plain whiteOK, I can see the problem. I just created a small file of each type, and both acquired the TextWrangler icon. I then changed the .php to "Open with" Xcode, but this did not change the icon. The only way I could change it was to select another editor (SubEthaEdit) – so you may want to experiment here. Of course, it would then be a pain to have to know two editors!
How do you move the files from a removable drive to HDDI don't do this that often, but if I had a lot I would be inclined to put them in a folder and move that.
Well, this happens everywhere actually.Probably for GUI editors, since they would use the same OS text-handling features. But sometimes an editor will have extra controls.

  • On Finder Freeze/Relaunch All my desktop files & icons disappear

    The title sums it up.
When ever my mac decides to go into spinning wheel mode and I have to force quit/relaunch finder, when I relaunch finder every desktop file & icon disappear.
At that point I'm forced to push the shutdown button on the tower and reboot, then all is well until the next time.
And the next time could be a day or a few days or a week. No rhyme or reason why.
Please help me solve this frustrating problem.
    Thanks

Cloud backup plans can slow your Mac down, and if used simultaneously with your Mac's networking, or you have an unreliable internet connection, could be the cause of your freezes.  You may be better off seeing if turning off iCloud temporarily helps.   This can especially be a problem with non-Apple routers whose firmware may not be up to date.   Multitasking with backups can lead to corruption of your backups.  Time Machine should only backup to hard drives twice the capacity of the original, otherwise it spends a lot of time trying to discover which archives to eraes to maintain room.  Here are some other options:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
Energy Saver can also create problems for backups, as it takes a moment for the Mac to recognize the connection.  Use screen saver instead of Energy Saver when backing up.  System Preferences lets you control both.   Putting hard drives to sleep when backing up is ill advised.

  • Recognising portrait orientation in JPG files

Some programs, e.g. Adobe Bridge CS3, seem to be able to recognise whether a JPG file is of a photo in portrait or landscape mode and display them as appropriate. Other programs, in particular the Screen Saver, don't seem to have this ability. I therefore use ImageJ to rotate files with portrait format and then save them again, so that the Screen Saver also displays them with the correct orientation.
I thought I should be able to automate this process for selected folders using Applescript. However, looking at the info displayed by the Finder for JPG files, I don't see any difference in the properties between rotated and non-rotated portrait layout photos.
Does anyone know how this property is stored? Is there more EXIF data hidden away somewhere?

Comparing photos store by my Canon iXus 60 with those from a friend's Casio camera, I see in the Inspector More Info data that the Canon seems to store more information about the photo, in particular it has (for a portrait photo) a field... [snip]
That's because the iXus has an orientations sensor within it that detects the orientation of the camera and can record that alongside the image. The Casio (like most cameras) doesn't have an orientation sensor, so it is unable to determine which way up the image was taken.
returns Orientation 1 (Normal) for both a normal landscape photo and one taken upside down.
The sensor is likely detecting offset from horizontal. Since right-side-up and upside-down are both, essentially, horizontal, they're both recorded the same way (few people take pictures upside down )
Holding he camera at about 45° brought Orientation 1, in one case, and Orientation 6 in another.
That's probably because you weren't quite at 45 degrees on the first shot.
As for the script, since that data is stored in the EXIF data, it should be possible to extract it via Image Events, so a slightly puffed-up version of my script should be able to orient it correctly.

  • WHERE ARE THE .JPG FILES IN THE MXP1700????

Where can I find the .jpg files in the MXP1700 using the serial interface???
Need to down load to my desktop ... have to use serial for this issue.
    Thanks.

It's been a while last time I had an 1700mxp in my hands but as far I can remember, you can't access the file system over serial. Your best chance is to try to break the boot sequence but I think this is something available on the integrator codecs, not sure for the 1700mxp.
But, could you explain more in details what you're trying to accomplish? If it's just to retrieve the current wallpaper, I would believe this is an one-time operation, so why do you have to stick with a serial connection?

  • File Icons Not Appearing in Finder

Over the years I have archived projects on CDs and DVDs. I have always worked on Macs. No PC involvement. I have been doing this since 1987. Over the past couple weeks I have noticed that the icons of files (not folders) on my older disks are not appearing. I am using the latest Mac OS 10.8.3 on a MacBook Pro. However, on a friend's older Mac Pro tower (Intel), running an older OS (10.6.8), the file icons do appear. Also, it seems that all folder icons do appear on both systems. I have searched the Internet for an answer. I have a lot of old files that I currently cannot seem to access because of this issue. Can anyone shed any light on this? I think it may be an OS issue.

    Hi,
I was under the impression that the Disk Level info was the bit that had the problem.
I am not sure why I ended up with that thought as you clearly state it is contents type info such as tiffs and the like you cannot "see" for long.
The Site did help with that.
I dug out a old Mag CD with a game on in.
I do not suffer losing sight of any of the files no matter which view I adopt.
It lists the Mac OS Standard as the format and the Roman encoding your Video and pics show.
(Strangely it says it was Modified  and the date is before the listed Modified dates of the files and folder it contains).
I don't have any self created disks from that time to test.
I am at a loss myself now.
Sometimes, as in my Pic, the Applications that were written for OS 9 (Classic era) and earlier have the no entry sign over them.
Other times the items will show a generic file icon as it has "lost" which app it belongs to.  (Which the PRAM reset deals with)
Your files clearly show the icons of the apps that would normally open them.
Files or folders that are normally hidden don't get counted in Quick Look or other forms of veiwing the contents, such as the lower bar in my pic.
It would appear the OS is reading the Disk properly but  then deciding that it is not going to display all of it.
I tried viewing the files on my drive if different views - iCon and Cover Flow for certain - but did not notice any difference in what was presented.
If you have the Disk Open and in the Finder > View Menu > Show View Options and then choose Show Icon Preview do you get to see the tiff files at all ?
I would also try the Size change in the Cover Flow view just to see if it is something about the icon data that is "missing" or being mis-read.
I am clutching at straws at this point.

  • .m4v file icons have become solid white in Lion Finder under iTunes 10.6.3

    Hi there,
I'm making this a dual category post, since I cannot determine whether this is an iTunes issue or a Lion issue.
I discovered that after updating iTunes to 10.6.3, all Finder icons for file container type .m4v have changed from their standard iTunes "notes" icon (with "M4V") to a simple white icon, regardless of the Finder view set. (Icon, List, Cover Flow)
All other iTunes-related icons are fine (.m4a, .m4r), as well as icons associated with other applications - it is limited to .m4v video files, as seen in the below Icon view screenshot:
My thread in the Lion forums, including actions already taken to attempt to repair, is found here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4032208?tstart=0
Has anyone else noticed this, or am I alone in experiencing this anomaly?
    Thanks!
    Steve

Bumping an old thread. I have this issue also under OS X Yosemite (which has been present since Lion), where m4v generic icons are white. I tried deleting the finder plist and rebuilding launch services through Terminal and Cocktail, to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks

  • .m4v file icons have become solid white in Finder under iTunes 10.6.3

    Hi there,
I just discovered this little annoyance... I thought I'd seen the last of it under a prior version of iTunes, but it may have come back.
iTunes video files (.m4v container files) have suddenly defaulted to a plain white icon in the Finder - desktop, folders, etc. - upon updating to iTunes 10.6.3.  The generic blue "notes" icon with "M4V" has disappeared, and will not reappear upon attempting to clear out the icon during a Get Info.
Strangely, if "Show icon preview" is checked under Finder's View Options, it will display any associated album art with the .m4v file correctly - it just so happens that something occurred with the default icons.
I rebuilt the Launch Services just in case, and these files by default still open with iTunes as per usual.  Checked for corrupt .plist files (even trashed com.apple.finder.plist) and cleared some caches out, ran maintenance scripts, etc. to cover any possible loose ends, but this issue is still present.
I recently upgraded to Lion 10.7.4 (long time SL holdout) but everything was normal under iTunes 10.6.2 - so I cannot determine whether this is a Lion issue or an iTunes issue.  I am going to post this in the iTunes forum as well, but has anyone else noticed this recently?  If so, what did you do to fix this?
    Thanks all,
    Steve

That's the point to where I was getting - without icon previews, the default icon for .m4v files should be the following:
(This was just taken from my wife's MacBook Pro, still on iTunes 10.6.2 but running Snow Leopard 10.6.8)
Under Lion (10.7.4) and iTunes 10.6.3, the default icon (no previews) is empty white, which I do not believe should be - I had the above generic icon for .m4v files in Lion under 10.6.2.
Yet iTunes-associated audio files are fine: (from my iMac)
    Strange, isn't it??

  • Can No Longer Drag JPG files From Finder Directly Into .fla Stage?

For the past six months I have been following a manual process to convert JPG files (exported from InDesign) into SWF files for display advertising assets.
Using pre-built FLA files as templates (configured with clicktags):
Open FLA templates (3 separate files for 3 IAB ad sizes)
Drag JPG from Finder directly into stage of FLA file, aligned to
Publish to output folder for renaming
Today, for no apparent reason, I can no longer drag anything into the stage of any FLA file.  Not just the pre-built templates.  Nothing will drag & drop into an FLA stage.
    What I have tried:
    Restarted Mac
    Reset Flash preferences
What I know I can still do:
Drag files from Finder into the Library, and drag into FLA stage from there
    "File > Import to Stage..."
This works but because of my naming convention it prompts to import them all each time because Flash sees the sequence
This is not another step I am willing to contend with for my manual workflow
Me and my creative team need to process hundreds of assets like this each week, so I'm very anxious to discover why functionality that was working, suddenly stopped.
    Running:
    MacBookPro Retina OS X 10.8.5
    Flash CS6 v. 12.0.2.529

just want to add my annoyance to the pile here. I can't see any logic behind removing the drag and drop function, especially when adding a new folder is now a multi-step process that is far from obvious. to start a new playlist with local folder content you now need to:enter settingsclick into advanced settings (basically all settings now seem to be "advanced"?)manually find and add the foldergo through the adventure of finding the files in your library.
-- because they may or may not be listed under "local files" - you won't know because Ctrl+F is also removed. so you have to remember/know what the album you added is called and search for that. if you have a mixed bag of file names from various albums, you're basically shafted; there's no way to find them all with a single search.then you can add them to playlisteta: but wait! there's more! if you have more than 15 files? you're **bleep** out of luck, because the search will only display the first 15 hits among your local files, and then show you spotify library tracks.I can't help but feel as though spotify is doing everything they can to stop us using spotify to listen to local files, as bugs that make it more or less impossible persist through multiple versions - and now features that seem to me to be basic functionality are being removed?mega minus points from someone who's been using spotify since 2008.

  • Cover Flow won't show JPG preview, only generic JPG icon

    Hello,
For some reasons, I don't see JPGs in Cover Flow mode. I can see them in Quick Finder no problem.
I tried the following and toggle the on/off the feature without success: Go to Finder, open a window, and click View>Show View Options. From there, CHECK "Show Item Preview," then click "Use as Defaults."
I exported photos from iPhoto into my desktop but I get the same result. Only generic jpg icon.
BTW, PDFs are fine, excel, word are all fine....
    Any idea?

    A reboot solved the problem.
I guess this is the workaround for now...

  • Indesign File Icon has changed to generic looking icon

I just upgraded to Adobe Indesign CC and now all of my file icons have turned into a white, generic-looking icon.  Can anyone tell me how to get the icon to look like the Indesign icon again?  Thanks in advance.
    David

I have a similar question.  We installed ID CS6 a few weeks ago, and when looking at files, I could determine which version of ID to open the files in by the different icons for CS4 and CS6.  Overnight, all of my icons have changed to a white box with a purple/pink square with ID in the middle, no matter which version the files were saved in.  Because we have to proofread any documents that move from CS4 to CS6 before using them (and don't have the time to do that with each document), it was very helpful to know which version to open the file in before opening it and finding that it was opened with the wrong version and having to start over again.  We are on Windows 7 PCs.  Any help you could give us would be appreciated.  We still have both versions of ID on our PCs.  Here is a screen shot that might help:
