Seeking Software to Capture/Edit DVD Clips

(Apologies in advance if this is the wrong forum for this question. If so, a gentle nudge to the correct one would be appreciated.)
I teach film/literature, and I'd like to be able to put together presentations of film clips from DVDs, with my voiceover, for teaching purposes.
For example: I'd like to be able to show clips continuously of three different Hamlets (Gibson, Branagh, Tennant) doing the same monologue. I'd then like to add my voiceover to that montage.
So my question: *What software allows me to do this?*

Step 1 - convert your DVD video to a format that can be edited. To do this you should download MPEG Streamclip (free) and purchase the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component. Then you can use MPEG Streamclip to convert DVD videos to formats that iMovie and Final Cut Express (or Pro) can edit. (Note: if the DVD's are copy protected you may not be able to convert them.)
Step 2 - import the converted video clips into iMovie or Final Cut. Assemble them however you wish them to display. Add your voiceover.
Step 3 - export your completed video from iMovie or FCE. Probably to QuickTime if you want to show from your Mac; or burn a DVD if you want a playable DVD.

  • Software to capture individual clips to HD

When I used a PC I had the software Scenalizer which captured my video clip from the camera plugged with a firewire. The grwat thing is that it created an indepdent avi file for each sequence between 2 tiemcodes. Unfortunately it does not work for MAC. I am looking for a similar software which generate mov files that can be recognised by final cut pro. Can you suggest a good one ?

Capture Now, when using controlled TC based devices (aka not uncontrollable device) will bring in the TC which will allow recapture from original tapes if needed.
Yes, I know this, but it didn't seem that this is what the OP was doing.
Yes, I agree Log and then Batch Capture is preferable way to go, but not everyone cares about reviewing their material that way and/or does not have a serious enough capture device. A lot of people use very junky camcorders for capture and the shuttling required in a serious logging process can destroy the mechanism.
The OP never said what what he was using to capture, even after I asked. He simply wanted to argue that what he wanted was not a feature of FCP. I simply wanted to let him know that it was.

  • A first step: Editing video clips before using them in a longer video?

I am an absolute beginner.  I have purchased Premiere Elements 7 and I bought the Premiere Bible and am reading that.
My question is, Premiere seems to be software designed primarily to help you make a video production by joining together video clips, sound clips, and photos.  Is there a step before this, though, namely editing the clips as they come out of your camera?
I've been using PhotoShop for years, and typically when I take a still photo I open it in PhotoShop and adjust saturation, brightness, sharpness, maybe white balance, rotate if needed, etc.
Is there another piece of software designed to help do this kind of basic editing to a single video clip?  For example, if the clip came out too dark, is there a way to brighten things up?
I'd really appreciate any answers, and if there is a book or article you could suggest about editing video clips I would appreciate the recommendation!

    Stephen,
    First, welcome to the forum.
Next, and this does depend on your camera, you Capture your video from the camera, using a Preset for your Project, that matches the material from your camera.
Now comes the "RAW conversion," though I am using that term VERY loosely. Many people will do basically a pre-edit, by Dbl-clicking the Captured Video in the Project Panel. This opens it in the Source Monitor, where one sets  the In and Out Points, basically doing a loose edit of the scenes. The Clip in the Source Monitor can then be dragged to the Timeline. Each is done this way, until they all appear, in the order that you want, on the Timeline. Note: you can drag from the Project Panel, and do this in the Timeline too. Also note: when you play the Timeline, you are now looking at the Program Monitor.
At this stage, one touches up the edits, and adds any desired Effects.
Usually last is any Audio work, like adjusting the Clip's Audio, or adding Narration, and/or Soundtrack.
Export/Share is the final step and one can choose their delivery format.
The exact workflow is a bit different than processing an image in PS, but not totally alien.
    Good luck,

  • How to send FCP edited audio clips for processing in Soundtrack?

    Hello
How do I send just the edited audio clips from hour long files to be processed in Soundtrack from Final Cut?
I need help as I'm trying to adjust some edited audio clips in Soundtrack Pro but when I send them from FCP to Soundtrack - it opens the whole original audio file and then any adjustments I apply in Soundtrack are being processed over the whole audio file not just the short edited audio clip that I want to adjust.
Normally I don't mind as my scenes are usually short and Soundtrack analysis over the whole scenes audio is usually desirable, but this projects files have been transfered from tapes as hour long AVI files (all the tapes clips transfered into one hour long files) and every FCP edited audio clip I send is being treated as an hour long audio file in Soundtrack.
I'm sure there's a simple answer for settings but I haven't been able to find it.  Any advice appreciated.

Thanks Javi, my sequence is an hour and half duration so what I'm trying to do is save processing time in Soundtrack by just processing adjustments on the few audio clips that need processing.
I have set Soundtrack to open referenced audio only and with 5 sec in and out handles, but it still imports the whole original audio file into Soundtrack timeline upto the selected clip, I then double click in Soundtrack on the clip in brackets, and it then selects just the audio clip I want to adjust, then Soundtrack will just process on the edited clip but when I 'render to action' it seems to apply changes to whole original audio file - taking longer than I want.... frustrating
Also the sound always sounds very different in FCP than Soundtrack even after 'rendering to action' and rendering in FCP... this is not the easy workflow I expect from such expensive software programs, I understood that they work together in a fully integrated way, what's the problem! This is wasting my precious time and preventing me from editing not helping me, this is a common problem and yet I can find no help in the user manual - I'm not impressed!

  • From USB to IEEE-1394: question about HD capture, editing, sharing.

I’m new to editing video but have a question about capturing video into Premiere Elements 7. I have been using a Canon HF11 which shoots only in HD and only has USB output to copy video to my desktop. I don’t have a Blu-ray burner yet but I have burned a few projects to DVD, shared video on YouTube, and saved files in .avi and .mpeg to view on computer screens. But obviously I’m missing out on sharing HD on disk at this time. I just bought a Canon XH A1s which shoots both HD and SD on miniDV tapes. And uses IEEE-1394 cable for capturing (to Pre7). I did a 3 minute test project in SD and burned it on a DVD disk. I was very pleased at the results and the ease of editing. I don’t have any HD tapes yet, but when I do what differences will I experience from shooting in HD and then capturing, editing, then to sharing? My current HD processes with the HF11 is slow, occasional low-resources warnings, and less then pleasing results on DVD disks. Thanks for any and all comments and/or suggestions.

Your HF11 is AVCHD format and the Canon XH A1 is HDV MPEG2. AVCHD takes a lot more computer horespower to edit compared to HDV MPEG2... main reason being that AVCHD is more highly compressed giving small file sizes. This is also why you get the low resource and memory alarms while editing.
To shoot HD you do not need HD miniDV tapes you can use the standard miniDV tapes. However the HD tapes are supposed to give fewer drop-outs than the standard tapes but are considerable more expensive. With DV-AVI a drop out would be hardly noticed, but as HDV MPEG2 is a compressed format and the picture relies on information in a number of frames any drop-outs can give a second or so of bad video. That said I have had very few issues with drop-outs. If you are doing a wedding or something important that you do not want to risk then probably better to use a HD miniDV tape.
In the past the advise has been to capture in high definition to get the best quality and then downconvert in the camcorder and capture in DV-AVI... the reason being that older versions of Premiere Elements did not do a good job of the down conversion. Reports on PE7 indicate it is better and that you could use a HDV workflow and burn to DVD as a last stage. This also allows you to export a high definition version of your video to view on a monitor where you can appreciate the higher resolution. Or in the future when you have a Blu-ray burner and player you can burn the file to disc... save doing all the editing all over.

    SoCal thanks for the attention,
sorry for having wrote the question directly in the subject, but first i wrote it by text edit then copied it, but in the wrong place too.....
coming to my question, timeline settings are:
as it is a commercial promo that must be projected in a multiplex cinema, the 2K format is needed.
I've heard about transcoding services, and they are very expensive.
so i'm looking if there is a way to do everything by fcp.
the project will be delivered as SD DVD for archive pourposes and as a single file for the projection or eventually transconding.
p.s.: sorry for my english, i'm from italy: had my last english lesson 35 years ago!

  • Possible to edit DVD created with iDVD, redux?

Created a DVD using iMovie then iDVD and burned. Didn't save original setup in iDVD. Would like to edit DVD and re-save as new DVD. Is this possible?

As Bengt says, you need to rip the content from the DVD disk to a new iMovie and then create a new iDVD project and burn a new disk from that. You can use Handbrake, MPEG Streamclip or Ripit to extract the video file from your DVD disk. Here are directions for doing so that I took from a post by AppleMan(Thanks, AM):
+I have found I get the best results when I use MPEG Streamclip (which is free). You also have to install the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component which costs about $20. Once you install the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component, you don't have to interact with it, but MPEG Streamclip needs it.+
+Insert your DVD in your drive. If DVD player runs automatically, shut it down. You should see your DVD as an icon on the desktop. Open it in a finder winder. You should see a folder which has VOB files.+
+Open MPEG Streamclip and drag these VOB files into Streamclip. If it offers to fix timecode breaks, say yes. You can do the VOB files one by one if you want to deal with shorter clips. Or, you can drag all the VOB files at once and create one long clip, or use streamclip to separate them into smaller clips.+
+In Streamclip, select File/Export using Quicktime and choose Apple Intermediate Codec. You may want to check "Deinterlace" in this step. Try deinterlacing and see if you like it. It depends on your final target media as to whether this will help.+
+Now you should have MOV files in Apple Intermediate Codec which can be imported into iMovie.+

  • How can I edit multiple clips with different frame rates on the same timeline

how can I edit multiple clips with different frame rates on the same timeline

You do not want to edit material from different frame rates on one timeline. You CAN do this, but it is a very bad idea - and this is why.
Once you establish the sequence frame rate - lets say it is PAL material at 25fps, any material that you drop into the sequence other than 25 fps will have to be changed to play at 25 fps. If the material you add is NTSC (29.97), FCP will DROP 5 frames per sec to bring the frame rate down to 25 fps. Which 5 get thrown away? Every 6th one. This yields a funky cadence that becomes even more complex as as there are also interlaced fields (DV/NTSC is an interlaced format). Oh, and by the way, the image sizes are different as well. DV/PAL has 576 lines of resolution and DV/NTSC has 480. FCP has to scale up the NTSC to fit the PAL frame.
You do not want FCP adjusting these things on the fly. You want to do a thoughtful (and time consuming) conversion so that you end up with all your material in one format with the best possible image from the conversion process. Compressor can do an adequate job with Frame Controls turned on. The Natress Standards Conversion FCP plugin is another way to go. A third option is to find a post house that can do the conversion for you using a hardware based process.
The good news is, once everything is in the same format, editing it will be painless and the output process very quick.
Whatever frame rate/ image size you select, I'd suggest using ProRes for the codec. It is 4:2:2 color and will withstand color correction and composting with much more grace than any variant of DV based codecs.
    Have fun.

  • How to mute ALL audio in one single go in an edited multicam clip?

    Hi there
I'm having to replace some audio in an already edited multicam clip. (there are mulitple audio parts I'm replacing by the way)
How can I mute ALL of the audio in one go, as I have about 400 cuts and am currently having to mute one by one per cut.
    thanks

Easy. Select them all. In the inspector, click the Audio tab. Under "Channel configuration", uncheck the box which would say something like "400 selected clips".

  • How to edit a clip in a multicam sequence (CS6)?

I am using Premiere CS6 on Mac, I have a multicam sequence set up (2 cam).
I just want to color correct cam 2 to match cam 1 and I cannot figure it out. Everything I try applies the correction to the entire sequence.
If someone can provide exact steps to apply color correction to one clip in the sequence only (it's just brightness/contract, nothing complicated), so that it's reflected in the multicam sequence I'd be grateful. Even a link to a tutorial would be good as I cannot seem to find it online (almost everything points to CC which I don't use and is totally different than CS6).
    Please help!

Ok, I finally figured it out, no thanks to Adobe's crap "Help" system, which is missing MANY steps...
    1. Right-click the Multi-Camera Source Sequence in the Project tab (NOT the multicam sequence you're editing). It's the one with the green/blue lines perfectly lined up.
    2. Choose Open in Timeline.
    3. In the Timeline, make the edits you want to the clip you want (in this case, Brightness/Contrast on clip 2)
    4. Go to Window > Multi-Camera Monitor
    5. You'll see your source clips stacked in the window, and you can fine tune from here.
    6. Click on the Multi-Camera Sequence you're editing in the Timeline, and the Monitor should update to reflect your changes.
You can toggle back and forth between these sequences in the timeline, adjusting as you need.
This was incredibly easy for me to document, I really fail to understand why the Help file couldn't be bothered. It's completely missing things like what the difference is between the source multicam sequence and the program multicam sequence, how to edit a clip in your multicam sequence, and how the multicam monitor works. Really pisspoor documentation, but at this point, I don't expect anything else from Adobe.

  • How do I move clips in one pane of iMove (10.0.3) into the timeline?  iMovie somehow doesn't realize I'm trying to edit the clips.

How do I move clips in one pane of iMove (10.0.3) into the timeline?  iMovie somehow doesn't realize I'm trying to edit the clips.

    Try this:
Select a small portion of the clip in the event (Above the timeline)
Click and hold and drag that section into the timeline, it should snap into place but if you drag it above another clip, it will not replace it but will be placed on top and the sound from the other clip will still play. Also this will allow you to use Blue/Green screen modes as well as picture in picture.
The best way is to drag it to the far right

For the first question: place one video on top of the other, as a connected clip. Change the size and position as you wish.
You have many questions that suggest you are very unfamiliar with the application. I think you'd be well served by going through a few online tutorials. All the things you ask are easy and fun to do in FCP X. It is best to learn by seeing it done. Look at rippletraining.com, izzyvideo.com, and others. I am sure you'll find that it will be time well spent.

  • When I capture from tape, express 4 now breaks my captured material into separate shots, an icon in the browser for each. Before it captured the whole clip till I hit escape, and created just one Icon. How to i get back the way it was.

When I capture material from tape with final cut express 4, it used to create one icon for the whole clip. Now, when i capture, it breakes  the material down into many browser icons, shot by shot. I dont want that. How to I return to what I ahd before/

What you describe is normal behavior for HDV capture using FCE.
DV captures as one clip or may split the clip if there are timecode breaks on the tape.
HDV always breaks clips at the shot changes using FCE.
HDV cameras can downconvert to DV even if HDV was used to record the footage so it's important to know what the camera outputs during FCE capture.
Maybe this is why you have had mixed results with the differing capture windows?
