Sell iMac - need to restore without disc

I bought my iMac used and it did not come with a restore disc. Now I want to sell it, but I want to permanently remove all of my personal stuff, i.e photos, documents, etc. How do I permanently erase all of these items?

halo,
So if I hook it up to my eMac and go through the security options that would take care of it more permanently than just moving stuff to the trash?
Well read through this:
http://www.apple.com/au/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
The pertinent info is:
"The 7-Pass Erase option conforms to the DoD 5220.22-M specification. This specification calls for three passes, but Disk Utility performs seven."
So that's 2.333 times what the Department of Defense considers standard security erasure.
Altho' now I see that they no longer consider that secure:
"As of the June 2007 edition of the DSS C&SM, overwriting is no longer acceptable for sanitization of magnetic media; only degaussing or physical destruction is acceptable."
However it should be ok for your stuff as long as there's no nuclear secrets on there.
And is it pretty easy to do it that way?
Well I did a small 20 GB hard drive and it took at least 5 hours for the 7 pass.

  • Wipe and factory restore without discs

Hi can i do wipe and factory restore my MBA without the discs , i have them some where but no idea where

We did the same with my wife's MacBook Air before giving it to our daughter, but it is not necessary to erase the drive. Create an account for your wife, give her Administrator privileges, then log into her account and delete your account. Everything you did on the MacBook Air will be gone.
Presumably, your MacBook Air is working well and your intent to 'wipe' it is not therapeutic, i.e., a clean install of the system software to remedy a software problem. If that is what you intend, then you will need to find your discs.

  • Software restore without discs

I've got an iBook with combo drive - just bought another one off eBay that doesn't have combo drive and didn't come with any discs. I re-installed OSX with my old discs, but the new computer without the combo drive doesn't like the Restore Software discs!
Is it possible to restore the software by downloading something? Or do I have to find the right restore software discs for this particular iBook?

Laura, as you can see from this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1273637&#1273637
some of us have the same problem even though we have our original software restore discs. Here's the solution i posted:
Had the exact same problem, but found some instructions at
    http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-7355.html
    that helped:
"You can get to all of the 'images' on a restore CD by mounting the CD, opening its main window, using the Finder's menu "Go to Folder..." and typing .images
You can then mount any of the .dmg files to see their contents. Note: Some of the dmg files contain installers but most just contain the application as it would appear if it were installed and any library components, etc."
What i did was to mount the OS9 General.dmg, then copy the "General OS 9 Content" folder to my hard drive. Open Classic System Preference pane, and tell it to use the System folder found within. I don't know if any of the other stuff in that folder is crucial, but i left it all there in case. Classic now starts up fine for me. HTH.

  • Satellite L775D-S7340 factory restore without disc?

Is there any way to factory restore this computer without the CD disc? It has been acting odd ever since we've owned it and windows updates every daya for hours. I see that most people are downgrading these computers to windows 7. This one has 7 installed and it seems to be factory. Has a windows 7 product key on the bottom. This computer is my cousin's and he needs it for school. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

See that computer's User's Guide starting on page 62 for full instructions and your options.  Your cousin was instructed to make recovery disks himself when he first started the machine but apparently he did not.

  • Software restore without disc?

I want to restore the original software, to give my laptop to my daughter, but I don't have the original discs. What are your suggestions?

Call AppleCare and order DVDs. They are part of the Mac.
They will charge you a nominal fee for shipping and handling.

  • IMac won't start without install disc

Hi, I'm new to all of this. I tried resetting my admin password using install disc on my iMac as I'd forgotten it. Now iMac won't start without disc. If disc is ejected on restart apple logo flashes between no entry sign and folder with "?" on it. Will start up with install disc in, but then wants me to choose language and install OS. Tried repairing and verifying HD and all seems ok. Tried holding option key and selecting HD on startup, but same outcome - choose language and install OS. How do I get back to normal desk top? Do I have to install OS again? Will I lose data? Please, please help! Thanks.

It should only take a minute or so at most to boot from the DVD.
If your sure you have the correct Install Disk for that iMac, I'd start over. Then if it still doesn't work then perhaps a trip to your Local Apple Service Provider with the Disk or Disk and iMac is in order.

  • Restoring imac 2009 without disc

Hi, my dad recently bought a new imac and since his old one was in pretty decent condition he gave it to me. I believe its an imac 2009, and I would like to reset it to factory settings to remove all of his files and programmes and such. I've looked online and I've seen people say that you need to use the disc that came with the mac, but as it was purchased so long ago I no longer have access to this disc. Basically I would like to wipe the computer so I can set it up as if its a new mac. Can anyone help me do this? Thank you

You NEED an install disc, period. You can call Apple and provide them with the serial number and for a fee they'll ship you a set of the original install discs. That's your best option as those discs will include all of the original software and the Apple Hardware Test that you may need or want some day. Or you can purchase a retail version of Snow Leopard http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard and while it will not include all of the original software or AHT it will allow you to completely erase and install a new system.

  • I have an original iPad and need to restore it to factory settings. It was loaned to me and I don't have a back up via iTunes. Can anyone tell me how to do it without iTunes back up?

I have an oritinal iPad and need to restore it to factory settings. I've followed the instuctions from the reset menu. When it powers back up it takes me to a screen indicating I need to attach it to iTunes. The iPad was loaned to me so I did not have a need to back it up. Can anyone help me restore the settings without connecting to iTunes?

    Helpjere-
When you reset to factory settings, you erased all content and settings.  That restored it to factory settings except that it kept the latest iOS update.
The person who loaned it to you can connect it to iTunes on their computer.  They will be given the option to restore from their backup.

Creating a Mavericks USB boot drive after the horse has bolted.  Can I create a bootable USB drive from my iMac after installing Mavericks without saving the Install OS X Mavericks.app file?  Do I need to re- download the whole 5.29 Gb from the App Store again?  My problem is my 4Gb/month allowance on a 12 month contract.  I cannot purchase a data block from my ISP and although my speed is theoretically slowed to 64k after reaching my 4Gb, it actually ceases to download in reality.

HI tasclix, it depends what you mean by an OS X boot drive.
If you want a recovery disk from which you can reinstall (by re-downloading) or recover from a time machine backup, then nbar is correct.
If, however, you want to boot and run the OS X installer from the USB drive (so that you don't need to download again), then you will need a copy of "Install OS X  Mavericks.app"; see this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5856
Before downloading again, search your system to see if the installer is still there - it's usually in the /Applications folder unless it has been deleted, but check your whole system for it anyway, you never know, you might still have it somewhere.

You can bypass the password and wipe the drive and return to the original facory installation if the seller included the orginal install DVDs with the Mac mini. If not you will need a retail version of Mac OS X.  To boot from the Install DVD restart the mini, immediately slip in the DVD and press and hold the C key.

Connect the iOS device to your computer and try to make a backup (if you want)

Then restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased. Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode if necessary to allow the restore.
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

  • Restoring a wiped MacBook without discs...possible?

Okay, so I should have learnt from previous computers but I haven't...
I recently bought a 2007 MacBook from a friend to use as a music library computer and general laptop. The MacBook was totally full of needless files and a mess with files, so I firewired the MacBook to my iMac and wiped the drive. I was hoping that my MacBook Pro (I used to have two of these) discs, one with 10.4.8 one with 10.5.2 would boot up the Mac but no. I also have original 10.3 and 10.4 operating system discs and neither of these work either. Oops. I am now getting a flashing ? and a bit stuck.
Do I need to order replacement discs from Apple? Or, can I buy a later operating system such as 10.6 or 10.7 as fresh discs and put this straight on?
    The spec is:
    MacBook 13.3"
    Processor:
    1.83GHz Core 2 Duo (T5600)
    Serial #:
    4H7121XDWGK
    Model #:
    A1181
    It has 2GB of RAM.

According to this site you need to call Apple and request Lion.
    http://www.tuaw.com/2013/01/24/mac-os-x-10-7-lion-is-still-available-for-purchas e-from-apple/
    An excerpt:
Here's the twist: his MacBook cannot run Mountain Lion (10.8), and Lion (10.7) is no longer available for sale on the Mac App Store. It's also not available on Apple's website, or Amazon.com, or anywhere else (with very few exceptions which all looked extremelyunreliable).
The good news is that Lion is still available from Apple... but you have to call Apple to get it. It will cost you US$20 and will come to you as a redeemable code that you will use in the Mac App Store, which means that you will need a Mac running at least 10.6.8 to use the code.
The only weird part is that the Apple Support salesman said that it may take "up to a couple of days" to get the redemption code. I'm not sure why that is, but my guess is that if you haven't upgraded to Lion yet, waiting another day or two won't be a huge deal.

  • When i tried to download iOS8 on my iPad Mini it told me that I needed to connect my iPad to iTunes, I have done that and now it says I need to restore my iPad. How can I get my iPad working without losing everything on my iPad?

When i tried to download iOS8 on my iPad Mini it told me that I needed to connect my iPad to iTunes, I have done that and now it says I need to restore my iPad. How can I get my iPad working without losing everything on my iPad? I don't want to lose my apps and photos!
    Help would be much appreciated!

If you are getting the connect to iTunes screen then it's too late to take a new backup and/or copy anything off it. Prior to starting the update did you take a backup, either to the cloud and/or to your computer's iTunes ? If not then have you recently taken a backup that might have your photos and apps content/settings in it ?
As long as the apps are still in your country's store then you should be able to redownload them via the Purchased tab in the App Store app (and the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store homepage on your computer's iTunes), and if the apps store their content on a server/cloud service then you might be able to get their content back from that - if they store their content on the device then you will need to have a backup.
For our photos you could try doing a search for programs that claim to be able to recover content from a device - I haven't used any so I can't suggest one.
