Seller protection ?

HelloI sold for a value of 150€ of items on Ebay. However, the buyer said he doesn't have bank checks anymore and want to pay with paypal.But as the buyer has no evaluation, and as this sale is about a very high amount of money (it's the equivalent of a monthly salary to me...), I'm quite suspicious about it. I was told about several scams made with paypal, and I was told paypal is always on the buyer's side, even when the buyer is a scammer, and never protect sellers.Then, I'd like to ask you some informations, so that I'll know if I can accept a paypal payment or if I should rather insist for a check payment.- Can the buyer cancel his payment after the money went on my account? Can he get his money back?- If there is no money left on my paypal account when the buyer cancel his payment or ask for a reimbursment, can paypal get the money from my bank account ?- If we had to open a litigation, what kind of proofs do I need to proove I did send the items ?- Can paypal protect me if the buyer is trying to scam me and tries to get his money back after I sent the items? Does paypal protect sellers from scamming? I'm not a professionnal, just a student trying to get some money, I really don't want to be scammed on this sale.Thanks in advance for any answer you can give to me. Also, I'm sorrry if my english is bad, that's not my natural language, but I thought I would get more answer on the english forum....

- Can the buyer cancel his payment after the money went on my account? Can he get his money back? A buyer can't cancel a paypal payment but they can file a dispute for non receipt of item OR item received but not as described. With the latter there are always risks as if paypal find in their favour they may send a different item back to you and get a refund and keep the phone !!! If there is no money left on my paypal account when the buyer cancel his payment or ask for a reimbursment, can paypal get the money from my bank account ? No but what they do is put your account into negative and limit it until you pay them back, if you don't pay them back then they sell the debt to a recovery agency.  If we had to open a litigation, what kind of proofs do I need to proove I did send the items ? Trackable, signed proof of delivery to the buyers paypal registered address. Can paypal protect me if the buyer is trying to scam me and tries to get his money back after I sent the items? Does paypal protect sellers from scamming? Depends on the scam, paypal has seller protection but you need to read up on this yourself and then risk assess your transaction. Seller protection normally involves unauthorised transaction disputes or chargebacks. You want my advice?? If you can't afford to lose the money and are not sure of the buyer don't go ahead with the sale. Sell locally for cash on collection. • Invoice vs. Money Request as Goods - same protection for Buyer and Seller?

    Please help settle a long-standing dispute:  A Buyer is purchasing an Eligible Item (otherwise eligible for PayPal protection) from a Seller.  All 3 methods listed below are valid methods to make payment and do not affect eligibility under PayPal's buyer or seller protection provisions. 1.  Seller sends Buyer an Invoice2.  Seller sends Buyer a Money Request as Goods3.  Buyer sends funds directly to the Seller as Goods Please confirm that ALL three methods are eligible for paypal protection.  In addition, as a best course, in ALL THREE methods, the Eligible Item should be described as thoroughly as possible. Thank you!

  • What happens if the seller takes more than 7 days to ship?

    Note: this is a purchase that I made directly with a contact from a forum. It has NOTHING to do with eBay. But I paid with PayPal in a single payment.  So here's a summary of the situation: I met a fan of a TV show on a forum. I agreed to purchase a prop from said show from this person. I paid with PayPal immediately when she told me she was ready to ship. HOWEVER, she took twenty-three (yes 23) days to ship the item. Said item arrived damaged. Does the seller gave up her Seller Protection when she took more than 7 days to ship? Do I still have to return the broken item in a situation like this? Thank you.

  • Protect from dirt?

    hi all,
    i just bought a 20" imac from apple and it's still at work all boxed up. i know when i bring it home it will soon become dirty. does anyone know of a company that sells protective sleeves specifically for imacs? i'm also looking for a screen protector, but most of them are 17" and not widescreen.
    anyone know a place where i can buy them? how do you protect your imac from dust and grime?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.3.2)

    I use a product called "iKlear" to clean my screen. I only use them about every 3 months so it's cheap. The iMac has fans and everything else built in so IMO it's a bad idea to cover it up unless you are going to be away from the unit for a long time. Anyway this is the the product link: http://www.klearscreen.com/

  • Dropdownlist handler throws error

    I have this handler for my dropdownlist:
    protected function selectQuality_changeHandler(event:IndexChangeEvent):void {
        currentQualityLevel = event.currentTarget.selectedItem.@name;
        counterCostSF = event.currentTarget.selectedItem.@price;}
    As soon as the state that includes this menu is activated, I get the error [code]TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no properties.
    However, if I continue past the error the app works fine, and people without the debugging plugin get no error.
    That menu is populated with xml, and which node is chosen by a menu to the left of it.  I guess it is possible that the data is not ready, but that makes sense to me if the menu is chosen; not just on state load.
    Since I don't actually "need" this information until the user uses the menu (there are default values),how can I prevent the error?
    Here is the code that controls that menu:
    private function getCountertops_resultHandler(event:ResultEvent):void {
         countertopData = event.result.type;}
    protected function selectMaterial_changeHandler(event:IndexChangeEvent):void {
         var sel:int = event.currentTarget.selectedIndex;
         currentMaterial = event.currentTarget.selectedItem.name;
         updateCountertopCard(sel);
    protected function selectQuality_changeHandler(event:IndexChangeEvent):void {
        currentQualityLevel = event.currentTarget.selectedItem.@name;
        counterCostSF = event.currentTarget.selectedItem.@price;
    private function updateCountertopCard(i:int):void {
          var node:XML = countertopData[i];
          if (!node) return;
          matTitle.text = countertopData[i].title;
          matCaption.text = countertopData[i].caption;
          matBullets.text = countertopData[i].bullets;
          image1.imageSource = "images/"+countertopData[i]..swatches.swatch[0];
          selectQuality.dataProvider = new XMLListCollection(countertopData[i].cost.level);
          selectQuality.selectedIndex = 0;
          profileList.dataProvider = new XMLListCollection(countertopData[i].profiles.profile);

    @Handycam,
    You should always try and verify that the event.currentTarget.selectedItem property is not null before trying to access any of it's properties.
    Either try this:
    if (event.currentTarget.selectedItem) {
        currentQualityLevel = event.currentTarget.selectedItem.@name;
        counterCostSF = event.currentTarget.selectedItem.@price;}
    Or you could try wrapping the code in a try/catch block.

  • How effective is the five star rating system?

    I'm all for rating buyers and sellers on eBay so that one can distinguish the good buyers and sellers from those that are perhaps a little less professional.  However, I've had sellers ask me to leave a 5 star rating across the board, as they claim anything less is considered a negative rating.  Most sellers write thank you on the items they send but in many cases that's the only communication that you've had with them.  What does that warrant on the rating system to provide honest feedback?  When the description on an item doesn't really tell you anything other than say "old stamp".  How do you rate that?  It is an old stamp; so looked at one way the description is very accurate but it's not really telling you anything about the item..   I may be a bit naive here but I've never seen a list of the criteria used to determine "very accurate", "very fast", "very satisfied" or "very quickly".  For the rating system to accurately reflect how good or poor the buyers and sellers are it needs to be objective.  That is to say that buyers and sellers must have a generally agreed upon statement of what constitutes the categories from 1 to 5.  After all one person's "very fast" (it shipped within a week) could be another person's "very slow".  Subjective ratings are open to interpretation and all one sees is the feedback comment and the ratings not how the person determined the ratings.  I think this is a discussion that would help to improve the feedback system and make it a more accurate reflection of how both buyers and sellers do business in this arena.

    It seems now that Ebay let now the sellers decide when it is ok to receive an item  Not exactly. EBay removes Seller Protection if the seller does not ship within seven days. Which has been the policy for many years. The delivery time is mostly due to the shipping service (China Post, USPS, Canada Post) although if an overseas seller uses Surface Shipping, he should understand that it will be on the high seas for six weeks to three months.The 'expected delivery time' is given by the shipping service not by the seller. Paypal is now allowing buyers to open disputes for up to 180 days**, in part as a reaction to unhappy buyers who have been hornswoggled into waiting past the former 45 day deadline for delivery. So really, there is now more power in the hands of the buyer. In my opinion, and I have lots of opinions. no buyer should wait more than 30 days for a delivery.Normal delivery from Europe* is 10 to 15 days.From Canada or the USA 15 to 20 days.From Asia 20 to 30 days. After that contact the seller and if neither tracking information nor a refund arrives within 24 hours, open a Dispute.    *European sellers use Air Mail as default. Asian sellers, especially those using Free Shipping, use Surface as a default. **(Or just don't ship at all and then promise a replacement which never arrives, but by then the Dispute period of 45 days has passed.)

  • Sold Item Returned. Reason: "ATTEMPTED - NOT KNOWN"

    I sold an item in mid-May. The buyer paid promptly. I noticed that the shipping address on the eBay auction norification was different from the shipping address in his PayPal account. I sent an email asking which of the addresses to use. No response. I created an eBay/Canada Post label with the eBay address. I sent an email telling him that the parcel had been shipped. No response. The parcel was returned to me on June 27 with a sticker sayingRETURN TO SENDERATTEMPTED - NOT KNOWNUNABLE TO FORWARDRETURN TO SENDER I sent an email to the member asking what is going on. No response. This email is a gmail account. In his PayPal account he has a different email (Yahoo). I tried that, but was kicked back as it was no longer valid. The buyer has not left any feedback in my account, even though it has been almost 6 weeks since the auction and he doesn't yet have the item he bought. I would definitely like to re-ship to him although, as the initial auction was free shipping, he would have to pay for this second shipment up-front. The only problem is making contact. Suggestions?

    To the best of my understanding, as a seller, you are obligated to use the paypal address as this is the one in which your Seller Protection covers. At least, this is what was told to me the last time it happened. With the best of intentions, it seems you may have made a misstep.  Best to call ebay for 'official' advice now. It's a bit of a minefield from here. The error was yours though (see above) you can't ask him to pay for shipping if you resend it.  Good luck as you carry forward.

  • Paypal allows scammers to keep on scamming.....utterly ridiculous...

    I sent a 10 car Hot Wheels set to a Canadian buyer through Ebay.....The buyer immediately after receipt claims 'Not as Described", including different color, different model, everything they could check off.......Now I know what I sent, So I sent the picture to Paypal of the listing and asked the buyer to descbribe to me what they had 'received'.....No reply, of course, so I then sent them an e-mail authorizing a return as Paypal requested........The buyer sends back an envelope addressed to "Homeowner"' at an address 7 houses down from mine.....Now I know i gave him the correct name and address and I am sure Paypal did the same..... I tracked through the Post Office where this was delivered to and signed for after the tracking showed such......and went to the house to retrieve what I thought would be 10 random cars in a package....the wife called her husband at work who told her where the 'package' was, it was an empty envelope......(He had thought about calling the FBI since he got an empty envelope from a foreign country with a blan piece of paper inside).... I called Paypal and spoke to the 'customer Service' (or lack of), told them exactly what I received, and told them the buyer was trying to pull a scam by showing signed delivery in my town, but not my address, since the Post Office tracking does not show the exact address......I told them I would send in scans of the package matching the same tracking number that the buyer gave them, and also note that the envelope states "Documents Only" so there is no way that he returned any items to me, just a blank piece of paper in it.....Well, surprise, surprise, they rule in favor of the buyer since the return showed 'DELIVERY"...WTF.......I have attached the scans that I sent in, just unbelievable that Paypal favors a buyer with 3, yes 3 feedbacks over a seller with 2800+ at 100%.....I am done with Ebay and will not send another item to Canada to outside the US.   Paypal has no seller protection, they are a joke...... My rant is over $59 and my 10 car set gone to a scammer that Paypal let happen...shame on Paypal... Paul.  ( I may not be able to attach yet)......

  • Prepaying in Anticipation of a Purchase

    I have posted an item on Craig's LIst.  A potential buyer wants to inspect the item, complete the transaction and depart with the item.  How can I use PayPal for this transaction?  Can the buyer place the purchase price in an escrow type account in anticipation of a possible purchase?  If that can be done, how do I know the money will remain in that account and that it will be transferred to my account after the buyer departs?

    DO NOT accept paypal for a collect item as there is no seller protection. Cash on collection and inspection of the item is way the best way forward.                            **************************************** I give up my time to help you so a thank you or kudos would be cool.

  • Digital downloads

    Nowdays most CD's come with free digital downloads from the retailer wether it be Best Buy or Walmart or whomever.
    The problem being that these downloads come in the WMA format which is incompatible with I-pod.
    I have downloaded a number of WMA to MP converters but the downloaded songs are considered protected and will not convert in these programs.
    What I am asking is does anyone know of a program that will overwrite the restriction on these downloads and make it possible to add these songs to the I-pod?
    Thanks in advance

    rzapelli,
    Here is what the walmart.com website says:
    Will Wal-Mart Music Downloads play on my iPod?
    At this time, the Apple iPod will not play Wal-Mart Music Downloads files. Our files are in the WMA format with Digital Rights Management (DRM) encryption.
    which is less than helpful. But the puretracks.com website, which also sells protected WMAs, provides the following:
    Puretracks Files Do Not Play (as is) On Apple iPod music players
    Apple does not support the Windows Media Audio ("WMA") file format used by Puretracks and does not provide its "Fair Play" rights management technology which would allow Puretracks to sell iPod compatible files. When Puretracks files are burned to a CD through Windows Media Player 9, these music CDs will be recognized and can be ripped by iTunes.

  • Sellers Beware, No Reason or Time Limit for Buyers to Reverse a Preapproved Payment

    Making a very long story somewhat less long: Buyer purchased a subcription to participate in our classified section.  They chose the option to automatically renew via Paypal's preapproved payment system. A week ago, they cancelled the subscription within their Paypal account, I received the notification. Then they disputed the last two renewals, one in late November and one in late May.  They claimed the transactions were "unauthorized".  The transaction amounts were put on hold. Then they contacted me claiming I had taken money from their Paypal account.  Had they beeen even remotely polite and simply said they didn't realize they had selected the auto-renew option or had accidentally forgotten to cancel it, I'd likely have refunded both since they were trivial amounts.  I reversed the most recent one immediately, since it was only a few days prior and they had not logged in.  I did this as a one-time exception to the clearly stated no refund on susbcriptions terms. The other one was over 180 days old.  It also did not meet any of the other Paypal user agreement terms for a dispute, yet Paypal accepted it.  It was also not subject to buyer protection, as it is a digital subscription.  I was given 7 days to respond. The biggest problem was that the Resolution Center did not allow me to upload files or comments proving my side of the story, with screenshots and copies that showed the subscription was legitimate and in no way, "unauthorized".  It only gave me options to refund or provide shipping information. I emailed support repeatedly, but the agents apparently do not read or understand simple questions.  In almost every reply, they ignored my questions and issues and resorted to generic responses about seller protection policies or how to upload a response (which didn't work as I repeatedly told them).  I asked many times for it to be escalated to a manager when it was clear that the agents did not understand English or simply did not want to read the information provided.  Finally one agent took a moment to read what I was asking and said I could also fax my information in response to the dispute.  Then they gave me the fax numbers in China, Japan and Hong Kong (I have a USA account). I finally called, since email support was utterly useless, and another representative kindly gave me the USA fax number.  I faxed the information exactly as requested, twice. Today, they deducted the amount from my account, indicating that I had not responded to the claim in the 7-day window. I don't suppose anyone has contact information of anyone higher up in the company that I could send this to?  It sets an awful precedent that allows anyone to dispute old preapproved payments without any ability for the seller to respond.  In fact, it took so much effort for me I can see why many would not even try.  Given that I can no longer trust Paypal's treatment of sellers, I will be curtailing my use of Paypal to the bare minimum, and accepting no large sales tranactions at all via Paypal.

    Please let us know what other payment companies you have found to use. I'm looking myself, and don't know much about these other options. ThanksMichele
