Server stuck at startup

I set up a new Xserver at a school the other week. It ran great until yesterday when a user informed me that she couldn't access it. I wasn't able to log into it via ARD or Server tools... other than to see it on Server Monitor (everything looked fine).
I rebooted the server through LOM, but still could not access the server. I drove over to the server closet and found it had hung up at the grey screen (Apple logo/spinning wheel). I powered the server down and started up on the install disk in an attempt to run Disk Utility/Repair Permissions... which failed (on exit error).
Since this was a new install and there wasn't much in the directory yet, I did a fresh install after re-partitioning the drive. I was able to completely configure the server, DNS, Open Directory, etc (everything worked). But when I logged out, it entered the spinning screen again. After waiting an hour or so, I powered off the server and rebooted... and it hung again at the Apple Logo/spinning wheel screen again. I left it overnight to see if it'd work its way back to life... but just checked it this morning and it was still in the same spot.
Since this happened on a fresh partition/install, I'm beginning to think it is a hard disk issue. Maybe a bad sector on the drive? I'll be going back later today to mess with it... anyone have any other ideas? I'll probably end up calling Applecare, but thought I'd check here to see if someone had another direction for me to look at.
Thanks

Sean,
Yes, I did get it solved. I just haven't had a chance to post back.
It was a permissions issue. The 'Everyone' permissions for the start up drive had gotten changed to 'No Access' somehow. I had to start up with the install disk, then open up Terminal and change the permission back to 'Read' and then run disk utility.
There is a thread here that gave me the exact command line command to use... but I'm sorry that I don't have it to link. Do a search on this forum and it should show up.

    S1:I uninstalled BPA.
S2: I installed BPA again using the default options by selecting all the default options that the BPA showed during installation. EG. I selected 'Oracle Lite' which was by default an option.
S3: After BPA installation, I also installed BPA Publisher which i had not done last time.
S4: Restated my system and it all works gr8 now.
Actually, the BPA Publisher creats a Repository area so it should have been installed along with the BPA installation. And Since a Repository area was not found it was giving this error message again and again.
Now its all fine . Hopefully, some one else will learn from my mistakes.

  • VM Server stuck in "Error" state - cannot start or stop any VMs

I have Oracle VM Server 3.0.2, VM Manager 3.0.2, and have a VM server stuck in an "Error" state. I've gone into all the Event tabs for the server + guests and acknowledged all the errors, but it's still in this state.

    Hi Mannyabdon,
Based on your description, I recommend to check the things below:
    1.  Run the PowerShell command below to check the status of the Secure Store Service:
    Get-SPServiceInstance |Where {$_.typename -like "Document Conversions Load Balancer Service"}
If it is not showing online, please stop the service first and then start it to see if the issue still occurs (the
<ServiceGUID> can be obtained obtained from the command above).
    Stop the service:
    Stop-SPServiceInstance -Identity <ServiceGUID>
    Start the service:
    Start-SPServiceInstance -Identity <ServiceGUID>
    2.  Check the ULS log for detailed error message.
For SharePoint 2013, by default, ULS log is at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\LOGS.
    Thanks,
    Victoria

  • Is this possible in TIDAL , Change the Lotus Domino Server (LotusDominoData) service Startup Type from 'Automatic' to 'Manual

    1) Shutdown the Domino server (Lotus Domino Server (LotusDominoData) service)
    2) Change the Lotus Domino Server (LotusDominoData) service Startup Type from 'Automatic' to 'Manual'
    3) Reboot the server
    4) Defragment the drive (D:\ or F:\)
    5) Change the Lotus Domino Server (LotusDominoData) service Startup type from 'Manual' to 'Automatic'
    6) Reboot the server
    Any help would be appreciated.

Binu - are you wanting to automate this process with TES?
There is a windows cmd command "net stop" and "net start" you can use to stop and start a service.
You will need to work with your windows admin or look online for a command line way to change the service to manual and to start the defrag.
There is a shutdown command that can be run from cmd. It has a switch to force the reboot.
You might also check out scripting with WMI.
    Hope this helps,

  • How to check Server Shutdown and Startup History in SAP

Hi guru's . One of the background job failed on saturday. And i want check the duration and the history when the server shutdown and startup. I can check the server startup time at ST02 t-code. But i want to check the entire history of server shut down. Please guide me through. Thanks.

    Dear Ram,
You can see the System logs in SM21 . Background job failure can be viewed in SM37 .
As said before go through \usr\sap\TST\DVEBMGS00\work directory and see the logs. Files like dev_disp , dev_ms ,dev_rfc.trc ,stderr1,stderr2,stderr3,stderr4 will have the log information  .  These files will have the information after the last  system start .
Anyway if want to see the old logs before server shutdown , see the old logs in old files like dev_disp.old,dev_ms.old .

  • 2008R2 RD Termimnal Server stuck at apply computer settings over an hour

    Hi Everyone
I am currently experience issue with my 2008R2 RD Terminal Servers. Every time I reboot the server it stuck in the "Apply computer settings" screen for few hours. These RD Terminal server is part of our NLB cluster. User connect to the
RD terminal Servers via FQDN for the NLB cluster VIP . Each servers has dual network adaptor. The second network adaptor is link to a NLB cluster. If one of the servers stuck in the "Apply computer settings
screen" Open NLB manger from one of the RD Terminal server, NLB manager will end up not responding.
I have found a way to allow me to login to the problematic RD terminal server by disabling the network on the network adaptor of the vm. This allow me to login. Then I quickly re enable the network on the adaptor. Users complained when
they log in to that server stuck at "Apply computer settings" screen
We do have GPO policy apply to these terminal servers I have moved one of the RD Terminal server to another OU with minimum policy that makes no different.
    Appreciate any advice
    Thanks

I have managed to resolve the issue by going into safe mode and disable windows management instrumentation service after reboot I am able to login . remove VMware tools. restart the server. apply computer setting disappear. almost like something is conflicting
    with VMware tools

  • Yosemite stuck at startup

I Have a MacBook pro with Yosemite installed and Windows 8.1 via Bootcamp. Couple of hours back I had used Windows and then now when I tried booting to Mac it's stuck on startup. Basically I see the loading bar go approximately 40% and then the display dims with a loading circle showing up below the bar. This circle keeps rotating for sometime and finally just stops. Leaving it idle for 15 mins causes the display to dim to go off until I tap space bar. I tried resetting PRAM and also checked disk and repaired the disk using disk utility but still no luck. Attaching screenshot of the screen

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
To restart an unresponsive computer, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If a desktop Mac hangs at a plain gray screen with a movable cursor, the keyboard may not be recognized. Press and hold the button on the side of an Apple wireless keyboard to make it discoverable. If need be, replace or recharge the batteries. If you're using a USB keyboard connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Satellite L655 Stuck in Startup Repair mode

My laptop is stuck in Startup Repair mode. A blue bar has been crossing the screen for over 24-hours with a dialogue that says, "Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete." If I try to cancel, I get a pop-up message that says, "The current repair operation cannot be cancelled."  Shutting down using the buttom and restarting takes me back to the same screen. Shutting down, and using F-8 takes me to the same screen. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to escapte from this "loop"?

Which Satellite L655? There is a label on the bottom.

  • CMS server stuck at "Starting" status

CMS server stuck at "Starting" status. I cannot stop it and cannot restart it. I even rebooted the NT box several times and it didn't help. Any suggestions? I am running BO XI R2 on Windows NT box.
The message from Events Viewer is: CMS is unstable and will shut down immediately. Reason: Database access error. Reason ORA-24369: required callbacks not registered for one or more  bind handles
Edited by: Michael Burgoyne on Jun 4, 2009 5:50 PM

Here is the meaning of the error :
    ORA-24369:
required callbacks not registered for one or more bind handles
Cause:      No callbacks have been registered for one or more of the bind handles which are part of the
    RETURNING clause.
Action:      The bind handles which are to receive data in a DML statememt with a RETURNING clause must have their mode set as DATA_AT_EXEC and callback functions must be registered for these bind handles using OCIBindDynamic.
It sounds to me that when DB was moved from one server to another CMS DB was either corrupted or not migrated properly or new DB has different settings compared to original.
This is definately on the DB side.
How exactly this move was accomplished ?
How was R2 system repointed to new DB location ?
Do you still have original "pre-move" CMS DB ?

  • In BootCamp Stuck in Startup Repair.

Hello I've Been using Bootcamp to play my windows games and becasue of its automatic update It turned off and i tryied to boot into it and now it's Stuck in Startup Repair and Now its Looping. Can anyone please help me get out of its annoying loop so i can play with my friends.
    Thank you on whoever Helps.

    Backups are always handy.
You tried booting from the Windows 7 DVD and that too isn't helping?
F8 Safe Mode can sometimes work and get you through.
If checkpoints were being made, which is automatic default, you might but some driver updates and others can be trouble.
If you can run chkdsk that is also sometimes able.
If you are low on disk space...?
Paragon Software CampTuneX $19 can redistribute space and check and see if it does more, like make an image.
WinClone 4.x $29 is Mac utility to make a disk image of Windows (be sure to have non-system drive to use to store it on) and while slow and can fail on restore sometimes does have its uses.
But try with Windows DVD -- and be prepared to reinstall. Windows 8 has improved the ability to refresh the OS and leave files intact, and added a better File History that is automatic once setup to make backups (but not a system image) and works similarly to TimeMachine in some respect.
