Service battery appears
Hello, i bought my aluminum macbook in april/may of 2009. Over the past couple of days, i have been experiencing much shorter battery life, along with the message under the battery menu, "service battery".
As of right now, the istat widget reports that the battery has went through 335 charge cycles, and battery health has been fluctuating, right now it is at 54%, but last night was 71%.
Could the battery problems be purely a software problem, or is the problem with the battery itself? Should I buy a new battery?
Try resetting the SMC:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Which is about the only software thing you can do.
My guess is that you've killed the battery--that's a lot of cycles for just about a year. I bought mine at the same time you did and I have 79 cycles. More reading:

I upgraded to Mavericks on my MacBook Pro about a month ago and bluetooth connection problems with my Bose Mini Soundlink and UE Boom were resolved but everything else went haywire from the dreaded Service Battery message, email, to wifi issues. After a few days of hair pulling and looking for solutions, the problems just went away, and everything went fine again. Two days ago iTunes came out with an update and I installed it. I first noticed the battery lost capacity from 87% down to 74% with just 299 cycles on it. Now the Service Battery warning is back and the battery doesn't seem to last that long anymore. I've removed Google Chrome, done SMC reset, battery reset, and the whole kit and caboodle of tricks from forums but none worked. I tried removing iTunes but I can't. I have a lurking idea this is a software issue. Any tricks out there to get this back into shape?
Hi there Sproox,
You may find the information in the article below helpful.

Service Battery & Check Battery appear with original battery & new battery
My older MacBookPro, purchased in November 2007, is continuously showing "Service Battery" in System Preferences: Energy Saver & in the battery icon drop down menu. "Check Battery" appears in the System Profiler. I have recalibrated both of the batteries. I purchased a new battery in February 2010 I am having the same issues.
What am I doing wrong? Is this a problem with my MacBookPro?

so far, it's been about 5 days since i took the computer to the apple store, and no further problems to report. so before buying batteries, this might be help your issues. hope this helps! -
After upgrading to OSX 10.7.4 it says "Service Battery"
Just upgraded to 10.7.4 and my MacBook Pro (mid 2010) now says "Service Battery". I have
reset the SMC, with no results
completely discharged then recharget the battery, no results
Repaired disk permissions, no results
Verified the disk, appears to be OK so won't repair it.
The battery status was "Good" until I updated.
Anyone with the same issue? Any suggestion on how to solve this?vrlink wrote:
Hi,
It all is a lot confusing because in that article and others it says the battery of my MBP (builtin battery) doesn't need to be calibrated.
I actually followed the directions in
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
reference from your post above " pre-calibrated " at time of purchase.
This does not preclude " re-calibrating" as general maintenance.

Hello,I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, it currently has 504 charge cycles and is giving me the service battery condition warning. However, I have not noticed any significant difference in battery life as the apple website said should occur as I reach the Service Battery warning. Do I really need to have my battery serviced right now, or is the computer just programmed to give me a service battery warning after a certain number of cycles?
Batteries will die when they want to. Some just stop working even though they appear OK. Others gradually lose duration.
Cycles do not matter. Some batteries die at 200 cycles and 3 years, some die at 1800 cycles and 6 years. -
Service Battery on 1 1/2 year old MacBook Pro
My MacBook Pro is a year and a half old and I am already getting the service battery notifications. Yes, I do use it everyday and it already has 400 cycles but do I really need to replace the battery already?
So it would appear.

Service battery after upgrading software - not under warranty
Hey guys,
I have a Macbook Pro from early 2009 with the problem in the title. I'm not under warranty anymore, and my battery has 246 cycles. The service battery indicator appeared shortly after updating to 10.6.something - I'm not sure what, I just know it had been a while since updating. If I take this into Apple is there any chance of them covering replacing it or am I SOL on this one?
Thanks!Yes, that's correct, prepare to pay. For instance, let's say you bought some new Pirellis (those are tires) for your Lamborghini, and the guy at the tire store told you that you would get 15,000 miles on them (these are for your Lamborghini, so they won't last 30,000 miles like some tires do). So you head on out with your Lamborghini, and within 10,000 miles all four tires have lost their tread, three of them having blown at various times on the freeway. But hey, it's your fault, I'm sure it has nothing to do with the tires. Just like with your battery. I don't think you should be thinking your Mac is giving you bad information or charging your battery incorrectly, based solely on the fact that about TEN THOUSAND other Mac users have noticed the same issue. It's undoubtedly that your battery wore out, even though Apple says those batteries last (at a minimum) 300 cycles. Or the fact that users have done a battery reset with PRAM and SMC reset, and had their batteries start to fully recharge again. I wouldn't rely on that. I would instead rely on people who reply with an absolutely worthless comment, as if they actually worked at the Apple Store. But hey, that's just my opinion - I'm sure a lot of people think Snow Leopard has been FLAWLESS, with no issues whatsoever. In fact, I would say that for a BETA release, Snow Leopard hasn't been bad at all (wait, it's not a beta release, you say? Hmmm....).
Lookf for a post that covers PRAM and SMC reset. You could start with this one....https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2139186?start=1530&tstart=0 -
I noticed that the service battery indicator has appeared on my Macbook Pro. I downloaded an app called battery health that gave me this information:
Current Max: 2815/5770 mAh
Health: 49%
Details:
Cycles: 396
Age: 1.5 Years
Manufacture Date: Dec 18, 2012
I purchased my Macbook in March of 2013, and I haven't replaced the battery before. I'm a little dubious that the battery could fail so quickly but I am a heavy user as I use this computer for business. Anyone have any suggestions? You should bring your MacBook Pro into an Apple store and have them run diagnostics on it. It may be that the battery is bad, but I have seen where an issue with the logic board can show that the battery needs service.
If you have AppleCare then it should cover any repair needed. -
I have the first Intel based Macbook (2006) white. Battery model: DP ASMB016. Under System profile the charge remaining is 3620. Full charge capacity is 3769 and the cycle count is 240. This is my second battery in 5 years. The battery icon says 96% when plugged in not 100% but I'm using the power cord since it's not good to run it with the notice. Currently, using battery, the charge drops pretty quickly. When I ran it off the battery right before the warning the charge % dropped more than usual. The pull down box says service battery, but it appears to hold a charge but I don't see where it says battery is running at (blank) capacity. Question is does anyone know what could be wrong with the battery, and do I need to replace it with a new one? When I replaced the initial factory battery after only just over 2 years it wouldn't turn on, so I knew it needed replacing and before going out I never received the service battery notice like this time.
If the battery life is okay but the software says service required, then ignore it, sometimes the algorithms can go wrong. Especially when the battery has only gone through 240 cycles. Does the area of the battery under the mac get very hot when the mac is on charge? if so, then that may be causing severe damage to your battery, heat + batteries is a very damaging formula, hope I helped a little, good luck :)

Re: 'Service Battery'? on MBP
Same here. I've just noticed the "Service Battery" warning, however, I've noticed a decrease in battery life since last year and it seemed not to go up to 100% even though it's fully charged. I use it sometimes without the adapter and battery cycle is below 1000.
Are there any updates regarding this issue? You don't say what variant of the MacBook Pro you have nor its Mac OSX version, but you can post some hard data numbers that might help us diagnose the problem:
Make sure "Finder" appears in at the left end of your menu bar. The hold the SHIFT and COMMAND keys while you type teh letter u. IThat opens your Utility folder. In it find and launch either System Profiler or System Information, whichever is present (varies with the OSX version).
When the Profiler/Information utility launches, find and click "Power" in the left-hand "Contents" pave to get this window:
Note I have highlighted some of teh line isn yellow. From you System report, copy and paste those same line into a response to my post. Sometimes the numbers displayed will reveal volumes about a power problem. -
the Service Battery Message has been appearing after i upgraded to OS x Lion from Snow Leopard. Tried reinstalling the previous OS but could not fix the problem.
Am asking what to do to solve this situation. I can follow the instructions and do the process myself instead of taking it to apple store. But My Battery Cycle is only clocking 415. When fully charged. i can use it for some hours with power code removed BUT the moment i close the lid for it to sleep, it turns off instead. When i don't close while using battery, it sleep without and wake normally when i resume using the laptop. I can plan on buying a new battery but this model's has maximum battery cycle of up to 1000.

A1212 Macbook Pro Cooling Fan Speed / SMC / Service Battery
Background:
I've owned my A1212 Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo since launch (Thanksgiving 2006 I believe). For some time now the temperature has been quite warm - more recently my right cooling fan has intermittently sounded like a jet engine and failed to speed beyond 1,500-2,000 rpm intermittently.
1. I ordered the correct cooling fan for A1212 right and replaced.
2. When I rebooted Macbook Pro here is what I see for temps in hardware monitor
AMBIENT TEMP 31C/88F
CPU A 44C 111F
CPU CORE 1:36C/97F
CPU CORE 2:39C/100F
"SMART DISK" — [DOES THIS MEAN THERE IS A SENSOR THAT IS NOT REGISTERING]
The hottest temp recorded is 109F/ CPU A temperature diode
The new cooling fan is majorly cooling the mac much better than prior fan.
3. I can't find ANY way to stop the mac from running both cooling fans at 6,000rpm
a) reset SMC (tried holding down power button 20 seconds after disconnecting battery
b) reboot
c) remove smcfancontrol
d) use smcfancontrol
e) monitor with temp monitor, hardware monitor, istat pro
f) no runaway processes - not even hot
4) I notice ( this was also showing up before install of new fan) in my battery icon it indicates "Service Battery" - while I do have a 4 yr old computer there was a recall on batteries so this battery is maybe 3 yrs old and I usually use computer plugged in.
I do not have my snow leopard boot dvd readily available to run hardware test on sensors, however techtool pro does not report any issues. I have not found any terminal commands to force the fan speed down nor any indication I have any apps that are accelerating it.
It appears that my fan speeds are accelerating shortly after power up - before OS X is even loaded completely - and never slow to normal speed except when mac is asleep.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO CONNECT THE FAN INVERTED (THE TWO PINS) MESSING UP ABILITY TO CONTROL FAN SPEED?
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I INADVERTENTLY BROKE SOME SENSOR "SMART"?
I am thinking more and more that this is hardware related like a sensor. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, while I don't have a Jet engine I have a very noisy macHi N,
SMART reports on a number of checks on the HD. I don't believe that's any part of the current issue.
I agree with you that my first inclination is toward a sensor issue; by default, if the sensor's are not reporting properly, the fans run full speed/6000RMP. -
Last evening I was using my MacBook, watching videos on Youtube and what not. I had plans that night, so I just closed the lid and got up and left. The computer usually falls asleep and when i get home I just open the lid, and everything is right where I left it. Yesterday I was gone for about four hours, I don't remember how full the battery was when I left, but when I got home, I opened the lid, and screen flashed, and the computer when to sleep. I tried turning it on and nothing happened. I plugged it into the wall and it turned on. The battery read 0%, and it said "service battery," which was weird, it only has about 151 cycles and 88% health. As it was charging it said it only had 9 minutes, and I was thinking no way is it going to charge fully in nine minutes. I charged it till it said about 19% and I took it off the wall; the battery read 94% full, and about 3.5 hours which is normal. It no longer said to service the battery. I turned it off, let it fully charge, and called it a night. This morning I got up, turned it on, the battery was full and said three and some hours of life left. I started to check my email, Facebook, Youtube, and all that stuff. Then suddenly the computer just goes to sleep again. The lid was open, and the battery was still about 95%-ish. I plugged it into the wall and turned it on, the battery read 0% full and "service battery," as I am typing this, it jumped back up to 94% and no longer says I need to service the battery. I usually, let the battery get down to halfway before I charge it, and I always take it off the charger when the battery is full. Could this be an issue with Lion maybe, or the battery. It's a new battery as of February. Any ideas?
Hi, I have lost 2% on my maximum battery charge. It now *suddenly* charges up to 98% claiming that the battery has to be serviced - again. This is already my 3rd !! battery in 3 years.
//MBP early 2008 - the worst MacBook (pro) Apple ever made)// -
Hi guys,
I can only leave my MacBook Pro unplugged for an hour maximum and it never seems to fully charge. It says on the Mac to service battery - which I guess means buy a new battery.
I have had my MacBook for over 5 years now and it does get used probably every day, if not every other. If I brought a new battery would it all work normally again or is it getting old and do I need a new one?
Also, my charger seems to be playing up a bit now as well. It's seems to be temperamental when I plug it in and takes to while to light up and charge. I've attached an image of the battery bit on my laptop as the lead seems to be fine - is this normal?
Thanks in advance guys.Is there any application(s) that your current Mac cannot run that only a new can? Calculate the cost per year of your current MBP and compare that to the cost of a new battery. Spread the battery cost over a year or two of additional operation, how do the dollar amounts compare? If the MBP is functioning properly, I generally find it is more cost effective to keep it.
If the retina display and the SSD storage are very desirable from your perspective, then that becomes a different matter. You are the one to make the final decision.

Sorry about the long title.....its my first post.
My kid just got a brand new iPod 5th generation (today from Santa) and it won't power up or charge. The only response is when I connect the USB and press the power button or front button the Battery appears with red line on left and lightning symbol below. There is no other response at all no matter what I do, including holding both buttons down for extended period. My other kid got one and it works perfectly.....I have interchanged usb cables ports etc. but still no response....I would really appreciate any help.Try:
