Setting up an Image Server and Selecting boot Images

I am setting up my first image server and when i perform a network boot I can see that i am reaching the DHCP server but i dont i am not getting a boot image.  I have configured the server with an install image and a boot image but still getting nothing.
Can someone please help a novice set up this server.

If this is for ConfigMgr enter the following in your DHCP
Option 066 - the FQDN of your SCCM server.
Option 067 - the path smsboot\x86\wdsnbp.com

You need to get the settings for your email from your email provider and enter them in Internet Accounts (System Preferences). Many of the common systems are already available, all you need is a password and an email address to set them up.

  • Set up a media server and backup

I hope I picked the best community for maximum exposure to this set of questions:
I want to build a video distribution system.  I have teh ability to send audio throughout the house and HD video via 2 CAT 6 in every room.  From my research and being an Apple fan this is what I am thinking about doing.  I am considering not using the CAT 6 for video and using wired or wireless connections at one of several locations to get video and other media.
Here is what I have:  Airport Express (extender mode), Aiport Extreme, Netgear Gigabit switch feeding the wired locations.  I have some older WD MyBooks connected via the network and a USB 500GB drive connected to the Airport Extreme for Time Machine backups - of just my MBP, not my wife's MBP.
    1.  Should I buy a Mac Mini to act as the media server for the house?  I suspect I could have 4-5 locations at once demanding media via Apple TV or xBox 360 (via connect 360).  I would like to not buy more than 1 Mac mini.  I have considered stuff by Request Media and they are really expensive compared to the cost of one or even two mac minis.
    2.  I want to have all of the media stored on a RAID 1 network attached drive (or Firewire, Thunderbolt, USB 3.0 whatever).  I also want to be able to backup the computers in the house to this storage too.  Possible?  Lacie seems to have a good product, but, pricey.
    3.  I suppose I could put a large hard drive in the Mac Mini and store all the media there and use the RAID 1 system to back up all computers somehow.  It seems Time Machine freaks out when more than one computer backs up to the same drive.   Is there a better way than Time Machine?
In essence I want to put together a system that supports media distribution via multiple streams via wired or wireless network connections to 3-4 locations simultaneously, backup everything, and store everything video and audio and I am looking for recommendations.
    Thanks many!

As previously stated, iTunes libraries cannot be accessed
simultaneously by to different computers.  This would pretty
much rule out having an Apple TV and other Mac(s) using
the same iTunes library at the same time.  Unfortunately,
Apple TV needs iTunes for any local network streaming.
However, ther are other ATV type devices out there that can
access files directly on any network storage.
There are also other media apps (PLEX, XBMC,etc.) that
can simply be set up to link to network storage systems.
Personally, I am using XBMC on my Macs and all are
linked to media files that are located on HDD attached to
    my Airport Extreme Base Station.
    2.  I want to have all of the media stored on a RAID 1 network attached drive (or Firewire, Thunderbolt, USB 3.0 whatever).  I also want to be able to backup the computers in the house to this storage too.  Possible?  Lacie seems to have a good product, but, pricey.
There are various options here.  Something to consider, is
    LaCie's Thunderbolt to SATA adapter:
    http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?id=10574.
You could then get one of OWC's RAID enclosures w/ SATA
interface and roll your own storage.  Advantages of this approach
    1.  The RAIDs will be hardware RAID.
    2.  You could have two independed RAID systems attached
          for various reasons or puposes.
    3.  Higher speed disk interface vs. USB3.
    4.  You can also install highest speed HDD's available if
          desired.
    5.  If a a single disk drive goes belly-up, replacement is fast
          and easy.
    6.  Also, upgrading to larger drives is a matter of just swapping
         the HDD itself.
    3.  I suppose I could put a large hard drive in the Mac Mini and store all the media there and use the RAID 1 system to back up all computers somehow.  It seems Time Machine freaks out when more than one computer backs up to the same drive.   Is there a better way than Time Machine?
With this sort of system, I would avoid putting data inside
and libraries inside the Mini.  Should the HDD fail, your whole system
and data will be down.  I would suggest get a Mini with a single
SSD drive with OSX and install Server on it.  Being solid state,
it will in the long run be more reliable than a mechanical HDD.
Then put all data and libraries on external storage.  If any of
the data/library drives fail, repair/replacement will be quick
    and simple.
For your purpose, you don't need to by the "Server" model.
Just get either the base or next one up and just install the
    server app on it.

Does anyone know how I can assign a static IP for my Home Media Server in the WRT610N router? I need to do this because of the settings I need to set for the server in the Single Port Forwarding.

  • How to set up a FTP and web server and integrate with DMM 5.2

    Hi All ...
I need to set up a external server only for content publishing to reduce the overhead of the DMM server .
can anyone guide me on how to set up the external server and intergrate it with the DMM 5.2
    Thanks

    semuthu,
    Notes from the Release Notes:
Compatibility Limitations with Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS)
DMPs that use firmware release 5.2 are compatible with only one version of Microsoft Internet Information Server.
That supported version is IIS 6.0 for Windows 2003 Enterprise. If you do not have the supported IIS version but
want your DMPs to retrieve assets from a webserver, we recommend that you use Apache instead of IIS.
I would suggest using Apache instead of IIS for the webserver service. IIS can be used as FTP if needed.
There are plenty of Documents on the Web about setting up Apache and FTP for servers.
    Using Apache with Microsoft Windows
    http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/platform/windows.html
Quick HOWTO : Ch20 : The Apache Web Server
    http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/wiki/index.php/Quick_HOWTO_:_Ch20_:_The_Apache_Web_Server
Once the Webserver is setup and operational. You simply store your media content on the Webserver
and then have your DMS assets in the media library use an external URL address for its location.
If you want to use external server for other features in the DMM, you can can see how to configure
    here:

  • "Reboot and select a proper boot device..." error on a p6214y

i have this problem where my computer boots and hangs at the HP blue screen mostly ... sometimes it wont and then go through to the "Reboot and select a proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key" message....
and sometimes if i leave the computer alone for weeks... it will boot into windows. and immediately go into slow response. then the process repeats from atop...
but then i connect my hard drive to another CPU, and it logs in fine ... so i know its not the HD...
i have taken out the battery, checked the cables .... is there something we dont know about this issue???

The Boot tab of the BIOS Setup shows the following typical items on the screen. (Your system might be different and not include all items):
Figure 8: Example of a Boot screen
    Boot-time Diagnostic screen
Boot Device Priority (The order for the boot process. For example, removable devices, DVD optical drive, and hard disk drive).
I would recommend turning on the computer and immediately tapping F10. When Bios pulls up use your arrow keys to move right until you highlight the BOOT tab. Press enter. Scroll down and select boot device priority by pressing enter. Make sure the HDD is listed as the first boot device. Hope this helps!

  • [SBS 2011] USB drive 3 TB and Windows Boot

Attached new USB drive to the SBS server. The previous one, 2 TB,  died. This one is 3 TB. When I reboot the server, I see the message 'Windows is starting' briefly and then it halts with an error. Can't make a screenshot, but it's something with UEFI
boot. Didn't know what caused this, so I tried starting Windows in safe mode. Same error. O dear. What has changed recently... ah, them USB drive. Unhooked it from the server and Windows booted just fine.
I didn't have this problem with the previous USB drive. The BIOS / UEFI setup of the server is set to boot from harddisk, then CD/DVD. The USB drive isn't coming into play at the boot stage. And it doesn't since I briefly see the message 'Windows starting'.
When Windows starts, it somehow does something to the USB drive and then decides it can't start. How do I prevent Windows from checking them USB drive at startup?
    Simon

None of them answers are correct. I don't use the drive for Windows Backup. Tested the drive and it's OK. I rebooted the machine so I could create a screenshot. When Windows starts, it displays the text "Windows is loading files...."
and a progress bar at the bottom of the screen. When that bar is full, the machine stops with an error. It looks like this error is triggered by the BIOS, since it displays:
    BIOS rev 2.3.3
    A system restart is required.
The system detected an exception during the UEFI pre-boot environment.
Press Enter on the Serial Console for detailed exception info.
Type: General Protection Fault (13) Source: Software (UEFI0011)
Then a bunch of numbers and the line:
    -->rip C023D04C bootmgfw.efi <--Crash occurred here
Reading this, I wonder if it's a Windows problem or some BIOS / UEFI thing?

  • Help me with setting up my first server

I recently decided to buy a Mac Mini server for my small business (4 users including myself) to run mail, file sharing, calander and addressbook services.
Since I'm also looking at this as a personal project, I don't want to hire a server administrator to do it for me. I have a limited knowledge about server administration, so please bear with me!
So I got the mac mini server, an static IP from my ISP (business internet), a registered domain(example.ca) and a cheap SSL certificate. A website is already up on the example.ca domain (hosted by my domain and host provider) and I don't plan to mess with that.
Using my domain provider's CP, I set the default [email protected] as a catch-all email. I then plan to use a POP email fetcher on the server to get all emails sent to my domain from the webmaster account and distribute them among users. The reason for this setup is that I suspect having instability problems for a while and I don't emails sent to my employees to get rejected because my server might be down. then I set up my network like this :
    Modem >>>
    unmanaged switch >>>
    1. 1st IP(dynamic) :an spare wireless router for my private home network >>> home clients
    2. 2nd IP(static) : an 8 port business router for my office network with DHCP enabled >>> mac mini server and 4 other clients
I didn't use mac mini server as a gateway because I didn't want to deal with the complicated mesurements securing the exposed server from public internet.
If I made any mistakes so far, please correct me.
Now I want to start setting up snow leopard server, and I have some questions:
1.What DNS configuration do you think I should use? Considering the mail setup I want to use, and the fact that I don't want to mess with the website seperately hosted website(example.ca), Should I go with a split-brain DNS, use a subdomain, or get another registered domain (like example.me) for internal purposes?
Also,How should I configure the MX records?
(please answer in detail because I'm a real noob when it comes to DNS)
2.Do I need to ask my ISP to correct reverse DNS records for my static IP address? Is that at all needed for running a mail server?
3.What is the current status regarding SLS support for Windows 7 users? I saw a number of topics filled with people complaining that windows 7 users are unable to easily login to SLS. Is that problem still unresolved?
    4. At what stage during setup do I need to add the SSL certificate? How do I get the mail server to use the certificate for encrypting connection to outside users?
    5. Aside from VPN, what options do I have to provide access to the mail server for outside users? What ports do I need to open on my router's firewall(25,...?)
6.What is the current status of Mozzila thunderbird + Lightening plugin on windows? Is it stable and compatible enough with mail, ical and addressbook servers? Are there any other hassle-free options availabe
7.Do I need to leave NAT enabled on my router?
8.Should I turn off the SLS's built-in firewall to avoid having to open ports on two firewalls(h/w and s/w)?
Sorry if it's a lot to read!
    Thanks,

Lots of issues here, I'll try to cover then.
    Let's start with:

    2. 2nd IP(static) : an 8 port business router for my office network with DHCP enabled >>> mac mini server and 4 other clients
That's fine, conceptually - giving you two LANs, one for home and one for work. However, I'm unsure of the 'dynamic' nature of the home IP address. I'm not aware of any ISP that would give both static and dynamic addresses over the same link. It could happen, but I think it more likely that the ISP gave you a small block of IP addresses (e.g. 4 or 8 addresses) one of which you'll use for your office and the other from home.
That doesn't really make a lot of difference, other than the fact the home network's public IP is likely to be static, not dynamic.
1.What DNS configuration do you think I should use? Considering the mail setup I want to use, and the fact that I don't want to mess with the website seperately hosted website(example.ca), Should I go with a split-brain DNS, use a subdomain, or get another registered domain (like example.me) for internal purposes?
You can't configure split DNS with Server Admin, so if that's what you want you'll have to get under the hood.
However, given the small number of clients involved I'd just go with private, internal DNS for your network clients. That doesn't preclude using an external web host.
Also,How should I configure the MX records?
That's a little trickier since you want mail to go upstream (to your host) and then suck it back down to your server. The real question is whether you want that to happen for internal clients, too - if Joe on your network is sending a message to Bob, does that message need to go through your web host or not?
If not then setup the mail server to be authoritative for your domain and point your internal DNS's MX record to your server.
Leave the MX record in your public DNS pointing to your web host - that way mail from external users will go to your web host (at least for now), but mail sent internally will go direct to the user.
In other words, for now, don't change anything on your public DNS. Just setup your own private DNS server that's only used by your internal hosts. That way you don't impact your public traffic while you're tuning this.
2.Do I need to ask my ISP to correct reverse DNS records for my static IP address? Is that at all needed for running a mail server?
Is that all you need? No. LOL
But it is an important requirement.
3.What is the current status regarding SLS support for Windows 7 users? I saw a number of topics filled with people complaining that windows 7 users are unable to easily login to SLS. Is that problem still unresolved?
I have no idea. I don't have any Windows clients on my network.
    4. At what stage during setup do I need to add the SSL certificate? How do I get the mail server to use the certificate for encrypting connection to outside users?
OK, this one worries me a little since you say you have already the SSL certificate. How did you do that?
To obtain a SSL certificate you need to generate a CSR - Certificate Signing Request - from your server that you send to a Certificate Authority. This CSR contains details about your domain/hostname and is verified by the certificate authority - a critical element in the chain of trust.
If you don't yet have your server setup, you can't generate the CSR, so you can't obtain a certificate.
    So what did you do?
Normally the process is to use Server Admin to generate a CSR for your server once it's up and running. You then send the CSR to the CA who return a SSL certificate. You install that cert via Server Admin, and all the services (such as mail and web) offer that cert as an option for encryption.
    5. Aside from VPN, what options do I have to provide access to the mail server for outside users? What ports do I need to open on my router's firewall(25,...?)
If all your mail clients are internal, that's all you need (to allow incoming mail). All LAN clients talk to the server directly and don't go through your firewall.
6.What is the current status of Mozzila thunderbird + Lightening plugin on windows? Is it stable and compatible enough with mail, ical and addressbook servers? Are there any other hassle-free options availabe
    See #3 above
7.Do I need to leave NAT enabled on my router?
Unless you have enough static IP addresses for every machine in your network, yes. Even if you do have enough, I'd usually recommend using it anyway.
8.Should I turn off the SLS's built-in firewall to avoid having to open ports on two firewalls(h/w and s/w)?
    Personal choice, but I do.
    1. The ISP actually offers only 5 dynamic IPs on my service. However, it gives the option of buying a static IP seperately. and that's what I did.
    2. Can you go into a little more detail about the internal DNS configuratio? This is the part I really have problems with.
    3. it's really not that important to me that the emails users send internally stay within the network or travel back and forth to the host server. We don't really have that much internal communications. What I really don't understand is how i am going to send emails (from a local email account) to the outside, while there is no reference to my host's mail server in my configuration.
    4. I kinda jumped ahead a little bit when I was talking about the SSL certificate. I was actually in the process of buying it without knowing that I need to setup my server first.
    5. Actually , I REALLY need the ability to access my mail outside my LAN (I travel a lot), and I prefer to avoid VPN because connecting to VPN that often is a inconvinient.
6.Do you also recommend putting the mac mini behind a router, or prefer the simplicity using it as a gateway brings?
Thanks a lot for the thoughtful answer.

  • OSX Server and BT HomeHub

I am considering setting up my own server and was wondering if there is anyubody who has done this over here in te UK using an BT ( British Telecom )
    provided HomeHub ( version 2 ) .
Experience / guidance etc. would be very much appreciated.
    THanks in advance

Earlier BT HomeHubs including I believe v2 (don't know if v3 does) have built-in support for the DynDNS service. Even if yours does not you could run the Mac DynDNS client to achieve the same thing.
This will let you have a host name like something.dyndns.org which even with a dynamic IP address from BT will still point to you. you then need to setup port-forwarding in the BT Homehub so for example any incoming HTTP traffic gets redirected to your Mac server. Ideally you would give your Mac server a static IP on your private internal network.
So, yes it should be possible to run a server with a BT Homehub and access it from the Internet. Depending on what services you want to offer you may want to have the Mac server also act as a VPN server. Internet users would first have to connect via the VPN server and then would be able to see the rest of your network.
You could get a static IP address from BT, but typically they then want you to be on the business version of the service, i.e. pay a lot more.

  • Setting up an Internal Server for Captivate 5 using ASP

We recently purchased Captivate for one of the features of being able to setup an internal server.  I viewed the blog entry about setting up an internal server and it seemed pretty straight forward except that our server is setup for ASP not PHP.  Does anyone have a template for ASP coding and have you set up an Internal Server for collecting Quiz Results in the Quiz Results Analyzer instead of using Acrobat.com.

    Server address = FTP host
Host directory is optional but you need to ensure that Dreamweaver is looking at the root directory of your website in Remote View.
If you see a folder such as public_html or html or httpdocs or similar then you're one level too far up in the folder hierarchy on the server.
Simply put the root directory folder name (public_html or html or httpdocs or whatever it's called on your server) into the Host Directory field in Dreamweaver.

  • How do you set up a Testing Server?

My Local and Remote settings have been working fine for years but
now I have the need to set up a Testing Server and I'm not sure
what to enter in the fields when editing my site. Attached are
my settings for Local, Remote and Testing. When I published to
the Testing Server this morning  overwrote the Remote Server
and had to ask fat cow to restore my original site. Please advise.
    Thanks.

Your website is at http://bigcowmusic.com/. You want to use http://bigcowmusic.com/testing/ as your testing server.
Create a folder called testing in your site root.
In the Testing Server category of your site definition, set Host directory to point at the testing folder. Since you left that field blank before, it suggests that leaving it blank points to the site root. So enter "testing/" (without the quotes) into that field.
Set the URL prefix for the testing server to http://bigcowmusic.com/testing/.
To test that it's working, create a file in the testing folder, and make sure that you give it a name that doesn't already exist in your site (this will avoid overwriting a live page if anything goes wrong). Test it within Dreamweaver. Then go to your live site, and see if the page exists in the testing folder. If it is, you're set to go.

  • Hi there! So I am using Lightroom 3 on a pc and I have ran into an issue when exporting images. The DPI and image size (in inches) that I am selecting during the export process. For example I just exported a collection and set the dpi to 180 and the size

Hi there! So I am using Lightroom 3 on a pc and I have ran into an issue when exporting images. The DPI and image size (in inches) that I am selecting during the export process. For example I just exported a collection and set the dpi to 180 and the size to 7 inches on the long edge. My exported result is 457 dpi and sized at 3200x2134 pixels.. Any ideas on why this is happening and what I can do to correct it?

The DPI setting in a digital image has no meaning at all. You need to learn how to calculate what you need in your exported image. The only measurement in a digital image that has any meaning is the number of pixels in each direction. It doesn't matter what you set that DPI to (actually it's PPI or pixels per inch). The image will have the same number of pixels regardless of the setting. If you need an image that is 5 x 7" (for example) at 200 PPI then you would want an image that measured:
    5 x 200 = 1000 pixels
    7 x 200 = 1400 pixels
So you would need an image that is 1000 x 1400 pixels to have a 5 x 7" image at 200 PPI. The reason your exported image had such a high PPI setting is because you specified the number of inches you wanted the image to be. And there were enough pixels in the image that it calculated out to be that high PPI setting.
I apologize, I don't explain this very well. But you need to learn to do the math to determine how large you really want your exported images to be.
