Sharpen after export?

Hello Experts!
I'm thinking about the optimal workflow when sharpen an image: the sharpen-step should be one of the last steps when developing/optimize an image (raw or jpg or ...). And - it should consider the size of an image (...size of pixels...) or in other words: the size (and paper...) of the image-print.
That's right - or?
Does this realy mean, that the sharpen-step should be done AFTER an export of an image? The target size of the image is (only?)defined in the export-dialog. Then it would be nescessary to import the "exported" first and than starting the sharpen-process.
Is there a better way?
Thx,
Rudi

well - but this "works" on the whole picture and it's a very "simple" way - "simple" means: ther're only 3 items to do the sharpen.
In most cases i use
a) first smooth sharpen of the whole image and than the
b) selectiv sharpen with the control-brush
And especially in the second step i would prefer considering the (output-)size of the image.
Any other ideas?

  • Still frames in project turn blurry after exporting to QuickTime

My sequence (standard definition) looks flawless when I play it back in FCP7 -- but after exporting it to QuickTime (export to QuickTime, self-contained movie, recompress all frames) a few of the still photos throughout the project are now quite blurry.
    Any solutions?

ah I see, well the freeze frame is just taking one field of your material (half the resolution as its interlaced not progressive) and inventing the other half to make up the rest of the information so I'm not surprised its looking blurry on output, the reason you're not seeing it before on your screen is that you never see full res on the canvas until you output unless you use a third party output device like Matrox or Aja.
I don't know if there are any tricks to sharpen this up (other than sharpen). I guess you could try de-interlacing the rest of the footage first? but stills out of dv res material are never going to be crystal clear.
    good luck with it

  • Output sharpening on export

I wonder if there is a way to specify an amount of sharpening that shall be applied to an exported image that is going to be scaled down e.g. for web presentation. My preferred solution would be to include this into an export preset.
I have used this "output sharpening" feature (also known as "web sharpening") within the export preset e.g. in Bibble Pro 5 (yes, another RAW converting software) and it really helps avoiding loss of sharpness as a result of scaling down images. I agree that this is not necessarily needed for each and every image but there are quiet some cases when output sharpening gives them some punch.
As a newbie to Aperture this is what I have learned so far:
Aperture provides various tools to adjust sharpening of images, starting with the sharpening adjustment applied to RAW files (RAW fine tuning) continued by "Sharpen", "Edge Sharpen" up to the possibility to "brush in" sharpening to certain parts of an image.
Apple was so kind as to provide a nice introductory movie clip to illustrate the basic usage of edge sharpening
All these adjustments are applied to the image in its original size of course. As soon as I export images and downsize them (using an appropriate preset) I do not seem to have any influence on how post-processing continues (re: sharpening). I have to rely on how Aperture handles this internally (right?). Surprisingly, this is different when it comes to printing. If the output is print the user may adjust the amount of "output sharpening".
As far as I have seen I am not the first and only one who faces this issue. A more elaborate article on output sharpening with sample images in context with Aperture is given e.g. here.
Another interesting review on "Sharpening with Aperture 3" can be found here.
Of course I have also searched the forums for a suitable solution. As far as I can see a satisfactory solution has not been outlined so far:
    Sharpening upon jpeg export
    Sharpening export workflow question
    Output sharpening
    Sharpening during exporting process
Maybe there are some news or workarounds in the meantime. I'd appreciate your proposals and look forward sharing your experience on this issue.

Kirby, I thank you for your kind answer. It is very much appreciated!
After reading one of the articles quoted in my original post I thought that the "BorderFX solution" for output sharpening on export would no longer work. But it obviously does as you report.
In the meantime I have had a look at the BorderFX website. Many features for a plugin - more than I usually need - but an interesting project anyway!
As you supposed I am not that keen on using a plugin for just the sharpening of images going to the web. But it's at least a workaround which I think is worth while a try.
    So let's have a try!
For anyone having a similar problem I attach two sample images which I exported
    a) with the built-in export feature of Aperture (3.2)
    b) with BorderFX (1.5.3) and the settings you recommended
Please be sure to click on the respective images as the previews look horrible to me at first sight!
    a) Aperture Export (resize to 600 px height)
    b) BorderFX export (resize to 600 px height, Edge Sharpen: Intensity: 0.5, Radius 1.00)
The image size allowed to upload here is quit limited, but I think the difference can be noticed. Maybe the sharpening in b) is already overdone but the comparison shall only serve as a first shot.
If somebody from the Apple Aperture team comes across this thread:
Maybe we can have a "sharpen on export setting" right within Aperture one day?
This is what e.g. Bibble offers in this respect:
In this case post processing is similar to an unsharpen mask filter setting.
I edited my message after I have seen the artifacts appearing in the preview images.

  • Trouble with photos looking different after exporting to LR5

I am new to lightroom 5.  My photos do not look the same after exporting to CD or to a photo lab for printing.  I am exporting to my hard drive before burning to CD.  Can someone help?  I am starting with RAW or CR2 files before editing.

What export settings are you using. For jpegs I always choose color space as sRGB (unless the printer requests Argb) and then I set print  size, with resolution between 240 and 300 ppi. For glossy paper I choose a high sharpening setting.
It’s also possible to print a whole batch to jpeg files using the Print Module (see image below). You can then set an output value for brightening and contrast.
This can be useful as many people using uncalibrated monitors often find prints look darker than shown on their PC. When using for the first time it’s well worthwhile doing a test batch using different settings to see which gives you the best results.

  • Pics not sharp after exporting

Whenever I try to export a picture, it seems to be less sharp than the pic that is shwoing in Aperture.
It seems like it loses some details after exporting it, even if I have the quality slider all the way to the right.
For now, I am using the Border FX plug-in which has some kind of output sharpening tool. The pictures come out much better and look more like the edited version in Aperture.
I am very frustrated with this though, I am sure there is a way to use the original Aperture export without losing any quality.
Here are some pics that hopefully show what I'm talking about
first pic is exported using border FX with slight output sharpening
second one is the picture exported with Aperture
First one looks just like the Pic in Aperture, second one is much softer than the in Aperture shown edited pic
    Thanks for your help,
    Lisa

one more thing though- this is a screenshot of a current picture. The one to the right is the original, unedited RAW file in Aperture. To the left is the exported JPEG.
it's pretty obvious that the pic to the right is sharper.
    Why is that?
I didn't add any shaprening or anything to the original to the right, so even if the export doesn't give good results for sharpening brushes, I didn't use that tool for this picture.
    Is that an Aperture bug?

  • Why does audio go funny after export?

Have just edited a video. After using the de-noiser effect and rendering I went to export. When I export the hissing noise comes back. When I play it in the adobe premiere monitor it all plays perfectly but once I export it comes straight back... Anyone know why?

Lotsa complaints about this lately, but I can never tell whether there is a bug in Lr or just user expectations/understanding/settings/viewing/system-anomalies..
Sorry in advance - I haven't read everything, but assuming there is NOT a bug in Lr, then these are some of the reasons people keep thinking there is (and I'm not saying there isn't - dunno..).
    A. Lightroom oversharpens develop fit view (so exports may look soft by comparison).
    B. The higher rez your images, the less develop module sharpening affects reduced size output.
    C. Lightroom's resizing algorithm does run soft by default, and due to that and 'B', you MUST use output sharpening when exporting at reduced sizes.
That's about all I have to say about it - if you're comparing at (exactly) 1:1 all the time, and you're exporting with normal (or high) output sharpening, your exports should be adequately sharpened - if they aren't then (assuming you're evaluating properly), there may be a bug in Lr. If bug in Lr, please gather proof and submit bug report to Adobe, or maybe they are already fully aware of sharpening bug issues - dunno..
    Good luck.

  • Help with exporting. Video looks horrible after export, but great when in premiere pro

Hey guys, looking for some advice on exporting.
When I finish a video, the color and everything looks great while in premiere pro, but after exporting it, the color ends up looking dull and the whole video looks blurry.  I'm filming with a canon vixia hf200 at 60i. It imports as a AVCHD file, I deinterlace it, and then export at the Vimeo HD settings. What can be causing the video to look horrible after exporting? What settings should I be exporting under? Any help would be appreciated!

It looks like you're coming up against some of the colorspace handling issues that the Premiere pipeline has.
Since your source is 60i AVCHD it's HD and thus rec709 colorspace. If it gets encoded with the standard rec601 colorspace (SD sizes are this) then all the colors get crushed. Look for a "709" and "601" radio button in your export settings. If it's not there you're out of luck.
The "blurry" is probably a poor quality de-interlacer. If Vimeo permits interlaced vs progressive do that instead. it's always cleaner to stay in the same video format all the way through.
    TECHNICAL ASIDE:
rec709 is a triangle of possible colors that can be expressed by mixing of ratios of 3 emitters (the R G B corners of the triangle). (they are the RGB phosphors of a CRT and now LCD pixel elements)
rec709 is a bigger triangle than rec601 so it's capable of more colors. but if you accidently map that triangle's corners to the coordinates of rec601 it gets crushed.
In photography the "sRGB" uses the rec709 triangle. A bigger triangle that that is "Adobe RGB". So if you work in Adobe RGB and export to sRGB without conversion the colors get crushed because sRGB in inside the triangle of "Adobe RGB".

  • In SSRS , after exporting report in excel, wrap text property for cell and freeze column for SSRS table header not working in Excel

I am working no one SSRS my table headers are freeze cangrow property is false and my report is working perfect while rendering data on RDL and i want same report after exporting in Excel also , i want my table header to be freeze and wrap text property
to work after exporting in my report in excel but its not working ,is there any solution ? any patch ? any other XML code for different rendering ?

    Hi Amol,
According to your description, you find the wrap text property and fix column is not working after exporting into Excel. Right?
In Reporting Services, when exporting to excel file, it has limitation for textbox.
Text boxes are rendered within one Excel cell. Font size, font face, decoration, and font style are the only formatting that is supported on individual text within an Excel cell.
Excel adds a default padding of approximately 3.75 points to the left and right sides of cells. If a text box’s padding settings are less than 3.75 points and is just barely wide enough to accommodate the text, the text may wrap in Excel.
In this scenario, it supposed to be wrap text unless you merge cells. If cells are merged, word-wrap does not work correctly. If any merged cells exist on a row where a text box is rendered with the
AutoSize property, autosize will not work. For the Fix Data Property, it can't be working in Excel. These are features when exporting to Excel. We can't change it because it's by design.

  • Hyperion IR 9.3.1 - Issue in printing the report after exporting it to pdf

    Hi All,
I am facing a problem in printing the report after exporting it to pdf format using Hyperion Interactive Reporting 9.3.1. I have set page size of report section to 11X17 inch landscape. Now I am exporting this report section to pdf. Report gets exported to pdf with size 11X17 inch landsacpe. But when I am trying to print this pdf it is shrinking the documnet size to A4 size paper and printing it rather it should print it on 11X17 inch paper size. Please suggest if there is fix available for this issue.
    Thanks
    Ujjawal

"File > Print Setup > Paper > Size" on PDF.
I think this issue is only to do with the printer and not IR.
I think the question now is "Can your printer print 11X17 pages or not".

  • How can I eliminate a green rectangle showing up after exporting?

After exporting in FCP and viewing in Quicktime, a green rectangle on the right side of the Quicktime window is showing up for about 1 second at a point where there is black between two clips with fade in/out transitions. There is a slug there which I thought might have something to do with it. I tried deleting the slug but the green rectangle persists. Can anybody help me eliminate this green monster?

Nick-- Thanks so much for your reply.
    CODEC is H.264.
In Sequence Settings I have the Quicktime Video Settings Compressor set to HDV 1080i60.
After rendering and saving the sequence, I click
    File >
    Export >
Using Quicktime Conversion. After window opens to save the file
    Format: Quicktime Movie
    Use: Most Recent Settings
    I click "Options" >
Settings, I choose H.264, then click OK (the green rectangle appears regardless of quality setting (I tried 2 kinds: Best and Hight), (also, encoding doesn't matter, either. I tried Multi-pass and Single-Pass)
Click Size, choose NTSC 720 x 480 16:9 (using this just for a smaller file to FTP to show progress)
I then uncheck Sound and Prepare for Internet Streaming (no soundtrack on this yet), then click OK
    I then click Save.
As I mentioned I tried it several different ways and each time the green rectangle shows up. I am nearing the end of this project and this is really becoming a problem. I hope you can help eliminate it. If you would like to see it I can email a small few second clip that will show it.
    Thank you again--

  • Quality not the same after exporting movie made up of jpg images

Basically I made an animation sequence on Autodesk Maya and rendered the sequence as 2000 jpeg images each representing 1 frame, put it in one folder and on Adobe Premiere imported and dragged the folder into the timeline to make a moving image so in other words my video is made up of hundreds of jpg images.
Now on the editor it all looks HD and fine but when I export it via file > export > media, in order to match the sequence to the screen I must click on 'match sequence settings' which will snap the whole movie into the window rather than have it widescreen and once I do this I can't modify anything else such as codec, etc (codec is automatically set as MPEG -Frame and the output automatically is mpeg), is this normal? Why is it mpeg ajnd not avi...
So once I export the video with these settings (image uploaded) the quality is ok but not as good as what I see in the Premeire editor, why? What can I do to improve the quality?
On the other hand if I don't click on match to sequence settings and personally customise the paramaters such as avi, I use max settings for many things but after exporting my picture quality actually goes worse compared tomatch to sequence settings? (which has less parameters)
Why is this happening, all my jpeg images are high quality 720p and I should just be able to export it as normal...
I am trying to make a cut-scene to get into Unity so the codec is important as well.
How can I make my video best quality as possible being mpeg or avi? What settings do I need to play with?

Maybe I misunderstood, but did you actually put 2000 still images on the timeline? If so, there is another way. Go to Import and find your folder, and select only the first still in your sequence, then check the box at the bottom of the import windows that says "Numbered Sequence" or something like that. This will import the stills as a "video" clip.
Regarding Export, don't check Frame Blending or Max Render, the first being for a change of frame rate and the latter being useful for a downscale of the frame size. You are doing neither.
Also, never use "Match Sequence Settings". Leave that unchecked, and then choose whatever format YOU want to use for the export, whether .avi or H.264 or whatever.
    Thanks

  • MapiSendMail doesn't work after Exporting a report in CR2008 (Outlook2003)

    Hi,
This one sounds crazy but I'm hoping this might make sense to someone..
We're using CR2008 SP4. In our WinForms app, we use the MapiSendMail function to open up a new email message for the user to send.
This issue only occurs when Outlook 2003 is installed (outlook 2007 and 2010 work fine).
If, in my application, I call MapiSendMail to send an email before exporting a Crystal Report to PDF .i.e oReport:Export() then both the export and sending mail work fine as long as I'm logged into my app.
If, however, in my application, I export a Crystal Report to PDF .i.e oReport:Export() and then I try to call MapiSendMail I get a generic MAPI erorr(2). I have to log out of my app to be able to open up a new mail message.
Is there anything in the Report:Export method that some affects default MAPI behavior?
    Thanks,
    Fergus

    Hi Don,
Many thanks for getting back to me. I've found a workaround without having fully understood the cause. I'll put it all down here in case some others have similar problems.
I was already closing and disposing the report object in my code as soon as the export completed.
The Mapi error 2 is  MAPI_E_FAILURE  which translates to "One or more unspecified errors occurred while sending the message. It is not known if the message was sent."
I could not find any any "Access Denied"s using ProcMon.
I used the Modules.exe to determine which dlls were loaded when the MapiSendMail worked correctly and compared that to when it didn't work. One dll that poped out was "outex.dll".
I searched for that in ProcMon and (in the case where MapiSendMail didn't work) and found that it was looking for this outex.dll but couldn't find it. It's located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033 but it never looked there.
    So:
Calling MapiSendMail before exporting a report - outex.dll can be found
Calling MapiSendMail after exporting a report - outex.dll can't be found
To get around this I added C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033 to the path on the machine(s) in question and it worked every time.
    Thanks again for your help.
    Fergus
p.s. After finding this workaround I found an almost identical problem but with Oracle instead of Crystal (How to serach text via TREX with cryptograph attachment in SAP system?).

It looks like the 2 DLLs you mentioned, are getting corrupted or modified due to some operation that might have been performed on them. Can you please try the below mentioned instructions and see if that gets your application to install without any errors:
    1. Try installing your business app.
    2. When you see the error message as stated, try running the below mentioned commands: (Start | Run | Type cmd and hit Enter)
        regsvr32 LTKRN11n.dll /i /s
        regsvr32 LTKRN11n.dll /s
        regsvr32 LTDIS11n.dll /i /s
        regsvr32 LTDIS11n.dll /s
    3. The above commands should fix the issues in the mentioned DLLs and allow normal installation of your business app.
Hope this gets your app to work and install properly.

  • Blacks turn dark grey after exporting to pdf from InDeign cs6

Exactly what the title says. The one on the right is from Indesign....the left one is after exporting (the same in preview and acrobat reader).Anyone know why this happens?

In this case it looks like the color change is because the color mangement settings are not sync'd and not a color conversion—if there was a CMYK-to-CMYK conversion on export the image wouldn't show through.
ID, Acrobat, and Preview all display some black CMYK mixes as something other than absolute black, but the preview depends on the color settings so there could be a shift if they don't match.
