Slip, slide, roll tools on audio editing

Do the slip, slide and roll tools work on audio editing?

I realize you are new here and probably have not read the forum terms of use.

  • Roll Tool and audio scrub

    Greetings,
I am trying to use the roll tool on the video track and listen to the audio on the tracks underneath as I scroll back and forth. Is this possible? Thank you.
    - Scott H.

I don't think I explained what I am seeing/trying to do accurately the first time...
When you click and hold down the mouse button on an edit on the video track, using the roll tool, two small windows open in the record window showing the A and B side of the cut. As I scroll the mouse back and forth, I cannot hear the audio underneath. My question relates to whether it's possible to hear the audio or if there is something wrong with my settings. Thanks again. Sorry for the confusion.

  • Cannot drag clip with slip/slide tool, when realeasing mouse, it disappears from monitor.

when trying to drag clip with slip slide tool, and release mouse in the monitor it disappear.   Also flickers when selected in Timeline.

Hello, thanks for quick response.  I kept info on problem short as I was “thrown out” for too much info first time.
Using Premiere Pro 2.0 (yes I know it’s old, but good) Updates that are available have been loaded.    Operating system is Win8.1  Source footage off Sony DSR-PD100 DVCAM (BBC News Camera) dv tape onto Disc for .avi
Using either slip or slide tool   Raid 0 (stripe)
All other effects and wipes ok.  When mouse hovers over the clips with (say) slip tool the source monitor is ok but when hovering over the transition in the Timeline it “flickers” and although the images open as they should in the Programme monitor, when I release the mouse, the monitor goes black.   When scrubbing the monitor records ok !    Tried other clips , different bins etc, just the same.  Maybe just one of those things that bug us every now and then.  No other transitions fail.  It is an annoying problem, not easy to describe and not too important as other editing tools do the job.  Cannot give you a Jing screen capture as of course, I cannot click it to capture the system working, just the black screen.

  • Audio editing on individual slides goes wonky

I record each of my slides separately with the audio attached to the slide itself so that audio is never broken across multiple slides.
This usually requires that I touch the audio on each slide at least once, in order to control the timing at the beginning and end.  I generally find that 8 ms of silence before I begin speaking and 8ms after creates a nice transition to the next slide (and topic).
The problem (I think) is that the audio track in Captivate is actually continuous and so my action of cutting a section from the audio track or adding something to the audio track on one slide seems to affect the entire project and mess up my timing on both the slide I am working on and on other slides.
    Here's an example:
    http://screencast.com/t/4GIWeETOkrgd
As you can see, I count off 8ms and remove the long pause at the beginning of the slide.  Then I insert silence instead of background noise, save, and reopen the audio.
All of my work is gone and the audio is almost to the edge of the slide.  Fortunately, I haven't lost any audio (this happens sometimes).  But I have to reinsert 8ms of silence, then resave and hope for the best as I move on to the next slide.  At the end of the project, I have to visually check each slide again to make sure that audio has not magically moved around or been cut off.
What's going on and how can I do this more efficiently?  It's bad enough to have to edit each slide in order to have the right level of control.  But then to find my hard work gone ... it's very discouraging!

Hi Lilybiri, this might not be the correct thread but I couldnt find exaclty what I'm after. My apologies if this is not the right place.
I'm creating a course with supporting audio narration, a narration audio file attached to each slide. Some of these slides have video with audio too.
I was wondering if there is a way for the user to turn off the narration audio on a slide, without muting the videos?
I was hoping this could be done through a button?
    Thanks

  • Seemingly Simple Audio Edits Driving Me Nuts

I have asked about this before, thought I had the proper answer, but alas it would seem not.
After joining audio (in most cases for music transitions) into Connected Storyline, I am often then unable to apply a Transition of perform a Roll Edit because it seems there is a space in there somewhere.  I have tried the suggested remedy of Zooming in, using Position Tool to trim both sides of the edit, then deleting the space in between.  It was explained the problem invovles sub frames which aren't always visible.  Sometimes this works.  It seems like there should be a quicker solution (it's especially cumbersome if your edit is otherwise well timed, and you have to re-tweak it once you pull the edges back,) but if it worked consistently I could live with it.
However, far too frequently, the process is not working, and I am redoing it over and over and over again until somehow it manages to take.  I can end up spending 5 to 10 minutes on a simple audio edit, and needless to say, this is just unacceptable.
Can anyone tell me a reliable way to deal with this, or suggest what I might be doing wrong or something different I can try, because this is making me crazy.  There has got to be an easier way.  Any help appreciated.

dont think ive ever been able to get cross dissolves on audio to work. I now use FCPX as I would Logic or ProTools and I overlap audio clips and put manual fades on them. Actually its worth the extra work coz the joins are usually better. and you have ore control.

  • Split Video/Audio Edits in FCE timeline

Using the trim tool between 2 clips in the timeline only seems to let me trim Video and Audio locked together.
(This is the case when the original clip contains the synced Audio Video)
I can't seem to find a way to split the edit (ie.roll the video out further along the timeline than the audio other than locking the audio tracks -not ideal)
How can I select the video only for trimming when the original clip contains the synced AV?

    Hi -
If you don't want to link and unlink clips, or lock and unlock tracks, another method to accomplish what you want to do is to not use the trim window. Instead, directly on the timeline, use the Roll Tool. While using the Roll Toll, hold down the option key and click on the video transition you want to move and drag it to a new position. It will move only the video transition directly under the clip, and leave your audio as it was. You can also use this to move the audio cut points without moving the video.
    Hope this helps.

  • Lost audio editing capabilities

I've used audio for about 11 months in Captivate 2 with few
problems. Yesterday, however, I lost the ability to open the audio
edit windows. If I double-click on the audio in the timeline, a
light blue transparent color displays in the entire timeline. If I
right-click to open the audio edit window, nothing happens. I can
    play, delete, and record audio.
I also cannot publish or preview .cp files with audio. I can
publish and preview .cp files that do not contain audio. This
happens in all my .cp files.
Do you think I have a corrupt file or did I inadvertantly
turn something on or off? Any troubleshooting suggestions?
    Thanks, SweetCharlotte

Captivate allows you to simply drag the audio file on the timeline left or right.  Double click the waveform on the slide to open the Slide Audio dialog where you have more editing options.
Agreed that Captvate's audio editing abilities are not stellar.  That's because it's feature set concentrates on tasks related to creating e-learning rather than specialising in audio editing.
The Elearning Suites 1.0 and 2.0 had Adobe Soundbooth as it's audio editing tool.  The latest version 2.5 now has Adobe Audition, which is even better.  If you're serious about audio, you'll need more than Captivate on its own.

  • Crashing Constantly when using ripple and roll tools.

I have faced this issue in the past, but not as constantly as it is happening now.  Every time I use the ripple or roll tool, or even if I try
to avoid using them and use my mouse to extend an edit - FCP crashes.  I am hardly getting any work done, and obviously am so frustrated.
This has happened to me in the past, on different machines, with different versions of software, but never has it been every time I use
the tool to the point where I get nothing done.
Please help me!  I just created a new project to see if this will work out any bugs.
Thanks as usual to whoever is out there!

    Hi Michael,
This project was originally shot on Super 16mm, and I am doing the re-edit.  (I didn't start with the project, so I didn't set up the specs, transfers, etc.).  The end result will most likely be film at some point, or an HDCam - not sure yet.  It's a feature.
Why are you saying that Apple ProRes HQ is overkill?  I'm starting up a new feature in a couple of weeks and am just now figuring out specs for editing.  We are using the RED camera and I have told the DP that our Codec could be Apple Pro Res HQ.  Can you give me your reasons why this may not be a good idea?
    Thanks!!

  • Roll tool doesn't bring up two up window revised

I have recently re-installed my FCP on and now I am having difficulty using the roll tool.
After placing 2 clips onto the timeline, trimming them down, working with only the video layer,I am trying to roll the edit at which time a two up window should appear to show me the relative position in both the outgoing and incoming clips, but it doesn't appear.
The manual tells me under the roll tool section that a two up window will appear but doesn't mention what to do if it doesn't.
Any help would be great, thank you kindly

This happens to me occasionally, and I just quit out of FCP and relaunch the application. Then I get my dual windows back.
    Don't suppose that helps much...

  • How can you do audio editing with fcpx

I want to know why was the audio in FCPX have such a big limitation of its audio editing, I want to leave the original clip sound but adding a music background and during the clip playback I want to rise and lower the volume in some portion of the clip I use to do that with FCP studio, but with FCPX you could only drag one point up or down and not a portion of the clip. Is there a work around on this or do I have to send these people from apple some feeback, on audio editing.

… I find this rather klunky - the keyframes are never in the right place for me using the Range Tool.
funny - I find your method more than complicated: switching to the range tool is a single click operation, and then just dragging - done.
precision is accomplished a) by magnification, b) by setting in/out traditionally with I and O, c) shifting the 'rough selection' manually, or, at last d) first setting Markers and snap the Range Tool to it.
don't miss Marc Spencer's advice on this topic

  • Audio Editing Questions In Final Cut Studio 2

    Hi,
Thank you all again for being here!, I have some quick questions about working with audio in fcp 6.02, and Soundtrack. first of all I am wondering if its easier and quicker just to work in fcp with audio, or export to Sound Track Pro? I have a wedding I shot and I had my cam recording 2 different source of audio, one from a balcony, and the other on the floor with different sounds to them. What is the best method to get them to sound nearly the same? In Fcp apply a "Normalization Gain"? I am new to audio editing, and somewhat with FCS, in general. Also in the timeline how can I get all audio clips in sync with the same volume? I was amazed with Soundtrack Pro's ability to take out ambient back ground noise and inference any other trick to get rid on unwanted inferences? Your Idea and experience are invaluable!!!
Thank You All Again, Tim C.

The reason you may not have gotten replies to your "quick questions" is because there are no quick answers. It is certainly easiest to just do the audio in FCP rather than export to STP. If your needs are simple just stay with FCP. However, you mention specialized tasks that STP can do but FCP can't. I am grappling with these same issues. I am a Logic Pro user and it gets very confusing about what tool to use when.
My main message to you is that I just purchased the Apple Pro Training book FCP 6 Beyond the basics and there are 90 pages in two lessons devoted to exactly what you are interested in. I bought it just yesterday and it has already helped me in a number of areas.
    Good luck.

  • Audio editing across tracks after OMF/AAF import problems

    Hi there,
I'm having difficulty getting my head around the way STP handles multiple-mono audio files.  I'm lucky enough in my job to have a choice of audio editing tools for what I'm working on.  For speech I use SADiE, for more complex projects involving automation I'll often use ProTools & for podcasting I find that STP is pretty good - especially for enhanced podcasts with pictures & web-links etc.
So now to my problem.  I've brought an OMF project, from ProTools, home to work on in STP. The import went smoothly, every thing in the right place & sounds ok.  However, all the stereo audio files are now split across 2 tracks; 1 track for the left leg another track for the right leg.   I can't now edit the stereo content in any easy form.  I've tried using the 'blade all' tool to cut across the 2 tracks, but I can't then delete & ripple the audio.  This leaves me with a gap that I have to manually close.  Needless to say, I'm finding this frustrating as it's making what should be a simple process un-neccessarily long-winded.
Both ProTools & SADiE allow me to group files like this so that they can be treated like a stereo file.  I've looked everywhere, but I can't see a function in STP that does the same.  Am I missing something obvious?  I can't be the only person who's had to deal with files like this can I?
The only workaround I've found is to use the export command to bounce the 2 tracks to a stereo file, however, this loses any existing edits so I can't unpick them if there are problems.
Any ideas anyone?  Can this be done or should I just stick to my other audio tools for this sort of thing?
    Thanks

ProTools uses WAV, in fact it uses the Broadcast Wav standard. The problem is the way it handles files. It still splits stereo files into separate L & R files. It's just that it hides this from the user. When you drag a stereo file in from PT's region list (the equivalent of STP's bin) to the playlist, the two files appear as one as they should do. The downside is that OMF/AAF export still treats them as individual files.
My problem is that I was halfway through an edit when I tried to move it from one system to another. If the edit was complete & just needed mixing, then it would have been less of an issue.
But you're right, there's probably some tool on the net that will solve this issue
    Cheers

  • Longer Transitions? Must you use the roll tool every time?

Hello. I'm new to FCE, and while I'm blown away at the possibilities with this editing software, I'm also reaching a point of slight discouragement... simply because of the daunting task of learning it all.
Anyways, here's my question this time around.
I've added several 10 second clips of stills to my timeline. When I add a dissolve transition between them, it automatically inserts the transition in a duration of only 00:00:01. This is obviously annoying. I've learned of the Roll tool, with allows me to drag the desired clips together, and therefore allowing for more room to enter a dissolve of say 1 second.
Isn't there an easier way to do this? Must I use the Roll tool for every point that I'd like to add a 1-second transition? This seem quite excessive, and quite unbelievable. I must be missing something. Is there a way to insert a cross-dissolve and have it automatically roll the clips together? My transition alignment is set to Center, so I don't see why it can't automatically bring :15 frames of the first clip and second clip together.
    Please help! Thanks...
    Message was edited by: Daeris

Yes, pretty much right at the beginning of the clip. Through experimentation, I believe I've found out that I need to have sufficient frames prefacing the IN point and following the OUT point in order to input a longer transition. Is that correct?
Again I question this though... Is there not a more automatic way to simply add for say, a 2-second transition, or is it essential to manually check the In and Out points of every single clip?
    Thanks.

  • LR4: any AUDIO editing capability - simple (?) enhancement request

First, hats off to the Adobe team for a nice upgrade. I'm still getting used to the new slider layout, but am loving it already. Really nice to be able to pull back the highlights without the image going to crap.
In addition to shooting stills with my Canon 7D, I also shoot the occasional video. I'm just a hobbiest (so don't have the budget for Adobe Premier) but just like to do some simple edits. The new video capability in LR4 is very much appreciated ... but I can't seem to find any audio editing capability - I suspect none exists.
As a software developers, I know the LightRoom team is pretty busy with bug squashing on the just released LR4 ... but a very useful feature would be the ability to export with/without a sound track, merge with an external track, or discard one of the stero tracks and convert the other to a mono signal.
You might ask why would you want to do the later? The reason is the *&^%$#@! Canon 7D (and many other DSLR's) use AGC (Automatic Gain Control) for their audio ... so it basically sounds like crap as the levels wander up and down. Fortunately, there are some 3rd party amps (placed between the microphone and camera) that can "defeat" the AGC by inserting a signal in one of the stereo tracks ... and this way you get consistant levels. So right now, I have to open up the video file with Audicity (which pulls the audio) then delete the one track and use the other as a mono signal. I then save that WAV file, open the video back up in Quicktime Pro, delete the audio track associated with it, and then pull in/merge the previously saved WAV file ... and then finally exporting the combined video/audio.
It would be awesome to do all of my (simple) video editing in LR4, and then simply have an option to fiddle the audio output as shown:
         1. Leave Audio as-is.
         2. Combine Left and Right track into Mono Signal
         3. Delete all Audio
         4. Delete Left Track  (optionally convert right track to Mono Signal)
         5. Delete Right Track (optionally convert left track to Mono Signal)
Again, the AGC "problem" is really because the DSLR manufacturers don't allow you to set audio levels on their cameras - this is fixed in the most recent models and also with Magic Lantern ... the later is unfortunately not available for the 7D. But my approach to "defeat" the AGC isn't uncommon and my hope (PRETTY PLEASE! ;-) is that this simple audio editing capability might be easy to add to Lightroom and worthy of consideration.
    Thanks,
    alek
P.S. Note that I don't see this impacting sales of Adobe Premier since professional videographers are using off-camera sound and are already buying that program. I.e. this is mostly an issue for us hobbiests that are trying to improve the sound quality on the cheap and Premier is total overkill for this - be awesome if LightRoom could help us out a bit.

    Hi,
why must I be editing a package to use the find function!? Has been asked for on numerous occasions, and has been agreed to implement in a future drop.
why doesn't the "describe table" functionality work from within a packageThis too has been asked for, and agreed to be implemented in a future drop.
If you'd have read the sticky moderator posts, especially "Feature Requests", you'd have found this on the SQL Developer Exchange ;-)
