SMB Wide Symlinks disabled again in OSX 10.7 Lion

Hey Everyone.  I'm hoping all you fellow Linux / Apple experts out there can help me to make an adjustment that I would assume is minor, but has a big impact in my home network.  Sometime around the release of 10.6.5 Apple decided to turn off wide symlinks for SMB shares as it was a security threat.  Well after digging around I found that you can manually change these settings by editing the /etc/smb.conf file.  Worked great.  I have a home network server off my Mac that everything from my Windows 7 PC machine to my android phone connects to to access the shares off my mac through SMB.  Problem is all these shares are setup with symlinks.
When OSX 10.7 was released, I've read that Apple ditched the open source samba and has their own setup now for SMB and AFP.  This is all fine and dandy, but once again wide symlinks is disabled (Folders / Files show as 0kb instead of an actual file / folder) and I can't access any of the folders/files off my SMB shares anymore as they are all setup as symlinks.  This has been beyond annoying.  I've checked the smb.conf file in both /etc and /var/db/ to make sure:
        follow symlinks = yes
        wide links = yes
        unix extensions = no
        wide symlinks = yes
to make sure wide symlinks work on my SMB shares as before with NO LUCK.  My guess is with the new Apple made SMB setup they are storing the settings for wide symlinks in a different location.  DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN MAKE THIS SIMPLE ADJUSTMENT in OS X 10.7 Lion???
Thank you.

I was able to get symlinks working on a 10.7 system by editing the file located at /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.smbd.plist - locate the "ProgramArguments" array (notice that it's calling /usr/sbin/smbd), and add two strings: "--no-symlinks" and "false" - it should look like this:
<key>ProgramArguments</key>
<array>
     <string>/usr/sbin/smbd</string>
     <string>--no-symlinks</string>
     <string>false</string>
</array>
I found this command line option by performing the following terminal command:
/usr/sbin/smbd -help
After modifying this launchd plist, you will need to toggle filesharing off/on for this to take effect.
From what I found, it was not necessary to include any of the "wide links", "unix extensions", "wide symlinks", or "follow symlinks" options in any configuration files.

  • I have just reset my ipad as my apple id was disabled, but once reset I went to download an app and it said apple id disabled again?  What is wrong and how can I fix it?

Someboby please help me.....THIS IS DOING MY HEAD IN!!  I have had to reset my Ipad as my apple Id has been disabled which reset fine but after the reset I have gone to download an app it was automatically disabled again.  Any ideas on why this is happening or how I can fix it would be awesome.

Apple ID being disabled is a different error, and one not related to your iPad.

  • Apple id was originally disabled. I reset my password and can sign into my apple id account. But when i want to buy an app in the app store it says my apple id is disabled again.

apple id was originally disabled. I reset my password and can sign into my apple id account. But when i want to buy an app in the app store it says my apple id is disabled again.

It's real easy to create a new one and, in fact, it's too easy.  I say that because multiple IDs are a PIA.  The problem is that anything obtained from the iTunes Store is PERMANENTLY associated with the ID that was used to obtain the item(s).  iTunes items can not be transferred from one ID to another and IDs can not be merged.
The problem arises when you want to update an app.  If you're doing it from iTunes on your computer, you must log out and back in to get to the correct ID.  Then you update and log out/in again to get back to where you started.  It's slightly easier if you update from the iPad/iPod device as there is no need to log out/in BUT you still need the correct password for the appropriate ID.  Of course, with a disabled ID, the problem is much worse!
A replacement Apple ID makes sense ONLY if you wish to start out absolutely brand new with zero iTunes Store purchases.
If you're really butting your head aginst a wall and you're reasonably close to an Apple Store, my suggestion is that you make an appointment with the resident "Genius" and get his/her help.
One last thought...  If your brother actually got a human on the phone to dispute the charges, go there and explain the problem.  Of course, if Apple did not accept his explanation of what occurred, that could be the whole issue.  Apple believes that money is owed on the account!

  • My Apple ID was hacked, disabled, enabled and now it is disabled again.

A couple weeks ago my Apple ID was hacked and then disabled. I  got it enabled, changed the password.  It now disabled again.  Can you help me sort this out?

no we can't.  We're users here.  You'll need to contact Apple for support.  You can find a link at the bottom of the page in the iTunes store.

  • Why has file sync been disabled again?

After my Creative Cloud file sync had been enabled again a week ago, it has been disabled again today. I have been waiting for it to be available again for months and now without any warning it has been disabled. I know the 'new' functionalities of file synchronisation and sharing are very poor, but at least it was there. Why did Adobe do this and when is it going to be solved again? I need an answer on this topic soon, because I'm working on a project and need CC to function like it should.
(The 'Update' is for Adobe Premiere)
Adobe is not giving me the full service I am paying for each month. Perhaps I will have to take juridical actions in this matter.

Norbert, firstly my apologies for the inconsitency of the service.  This is not something that should be occuring.  In order to better understand the cause, could you confirm the version of the Creative Cloud app you are running? (got to Preferences/Account)  Also, could you send me a copy of your log file, which you'll find here:

  • What is the best way to migrate mail from OSX 10.4.11 (Tiger) to OSX 10.7 (Lion)

    Greetings,
Does anyone have experience migrating mail boxes from OSX 10.4 to OSX 10.7?
I have an old 1.5 Ghz PowerPC G4 laptop with a lot of email (about 8 years worth). I just purchased a new Mac Mini with OSX 10.7 Lion and I'd like to migrate 2 groups of files, mail and photos. I figure the mail might be the most difficult, hence this request for information.
I have read where you can run a migration assistant for OS 10.5 and 10.6 to OSX 10.7 but there are only a few articles about the earlier OS.
Also, I would like to migrate ONLY the mail box into an existing user account. I would rather not migrate older files and applications that I have on the older PC.
Can anyone point me to articles about doing this?
    Thank you,
    Tim Kern

    Hi Linc,
    Thank you for yout suggestion.
Export the import makes sense. Do you know of any "How to..." articles for exporting from Tiger?
    Thanks again,
    Tim Kern

  • Purchased OSx 7 Mountain Lion on May 31st. After a virus in October

Purchased OSx 7 Mountain Lion on 5/31/13. After a virus in October & system wipe, I'd like to re-install without having to re-purchase. It was sent as an online update, so I don't have a disc (or the original e-mail, due to the virus). Couldn't restore e-mail from backup...

It was sent as an online update, so I don't have a disc (or the original e-mail, due to the virus)
It's highly unlikely you had any kind of virus since there are none that affect OS X. A Trojan or a couple of others types of malware, possibly.
Anyway, I presume "It" is Mountain Lion? If this purchase was from anywhere other than directly from Apple, either through the App Store or Apple's online store, then you bought an illegal copy from another vendor. As such, it's very likely that download of ML itself was laced with malware.
You should fix your tag line. iOS 7 and a 13" MacBook have nothing to do with each other. The iOS is a completely separate OS and is only for Apple's mobile devices such as the iPhone and iPad. OS X is what runs Apple's computers, such as your laptop, iMac, Mac Pro and Mac Mini.
Your tag line also doesn't match up with your post. All late 2007 MacBooks came with Leopard, 10.5.x and can't run any OS higher than Lion, 10.7.x. So it's not possible you ever had Mountain Lion, 10.8.x running on that Mac.
If you did purchase Mountain Lion (much more likely, Lion) through the App Store, all you need to do is login to the App Store with the identical user name and password you make your App Store purchases under. You will be able to download and install your OS upgrade again at no cost.

  • Watchguard SSL VPN client on OSX 10.7 Lion TUN/TAP Kernel Problem

I upgraded to OSX 10.7 Lion and lost the use of the Watchguard VPN client.
    I eventually found a solution at http://lesmond.net/2011/07/watchguard-ssl-vpn-client-on-osx-10-7-lion/
I had already uninstalled Watchguard VPN and tried to reinstall to see if that worked (poor advice from another forum)
I hadn't manually removed Watchguard icon from the dock.
When you try to reinstall the dialog tells you to run an postupgrade script on the TUN/TAP kernel and then quits with a fail.
If you install openVPN in this scenario you get an openVPN app and menu item, both of which do nothing.
Click on the Watchguard dock icon and connect.
I was then asked to upgrade and ended up with the run post upgrade script dialog and quit with a fail.
I then clicked on the Watchguard doc icon again and connected.
This time it connected with no problem.
    Hope this helps!

WG has new firmware that will fix the problem, once flashed, download the new client vpn client (11.5.1) and you should be good to go.
I had to contact WG to get the patch as it was not in the portal  Version 11.3.4 CSP6 for my device.  Hope this helps someone.

  • OSX Mtn. Lion/ Reset to factory settings/ secure HD wipe?

    All-
I have a late-2011 MacBook Pro i7, 2.5GhZ that has, through terrible file management on my part, become so cluttered and disorganized to the point where I would literally need to spend upwards of 36 hours to organize, clean, re-file, re-organize, and what not my file libraries.
Specifically, as a DJ/Music producer, my sample libraries are -terribly- organized (read: not organized at all).  I tried to work through it all day today but I've literally managed to get through maybe 150 files, which does not even scratch the surface of the files that start with the letter "A" on my Macbook Pro- see what I mean?
Anyhow, I recently upgraded to Mtn Lion, and love it, and I bought my computer with Snow Leopard on it, so, a restore to factory settings I think would wipe my OS back to Snow Leopard, which I really don't want to do...
I'm wondering if, since I back up my hard drive with Time Machine constantly, if it would just be worth it to wipe the hard drive completely clean and start over with a clean, empty MBP with just OSX Mtn. Lion on it, and go from there, and select files that I want from my external hard drive as needed to build up my file libraries again.
I just want it all to be neat and organized, and I've been unable to (read: too lazy to) keep up with it so far, and now, it's beyond manageable for me to re-organize everything. (Unless someone has tips to make this a more manageable process?)
How would I go about doing this and/or does this sound like a feasible plan?
    Thanks-
    Andy

Yes you certainly can Erase and Install 10.8, (no need for 10.6 or 10.7)
I suggest you transfer the contents of your users folders (music, pictures, documents etc) to a external storage drive (not just TimeMachine) and disconnect, it's only these files you will be returning into the same named account later, so no TimeMachine restores and thus no corrupts.
You need to export bookmarks, email addresses, serial keys or any other information (addressbook) that are locked into programs as well. Make a note of your programs installed. Disconnect all drives.
Write down your AppleID and password.
Hook your Mac to the Ethernet cable to your router or modem, if the modem, then power it off/30 sec/on.
This process is going to take hours, so prepare yourself.
Next your going to hold the Command r keys down and boot the computer into Recovery HD, select Disk Utility and on the left side, click on Macintosh HD partition then click on the Erase tab and there should be a slider, use the middle secure erase option. And click Apply, this will zero the entire Macintosh HD partition and map off any  failing sectors. Drive makers advise this whenever a OS is reinstalled.
Once this is completed, quit and then click the OS X installer and proceed with that step.
When that's finished you can reboot the machine and it's a brand new one, use the same setup name as before (important)
Software Update check just in case.
Now you won't have the free iLife that carried over from the 10.6 install, however you can use Pacifist from CharlesSoft to extract it from the black or purple (not white) 10.6 disks, or you can but it anew at AppStore.
If you have any purchases at AppsSore, hold down the option key and click on Purchases to reinstall.
You should also install as much as your third party software at this time as possible for best performance on hard drives.
Last you hook up the external storage drive and go cherry picking for what you want and leave what you don't want.
Tip: Use Activity Monitor to keep your boot drive (ideally) below 50%, never more than 80% filled.
Now once you have this "perfect" new Install, you can preserve it by using a blank external powered drive and Carbon Copy Cloner, default settings are fine for the first clone. Later you have to adjust for a "pure clone" every time it's updated.
This way if you ever have to do this painful process of resinstall, you can hold the option key down and simply boot off the clone and reverse clone!! No effort on your part required, it will take a few hours and copy everything over like new again.
    Most commonly used backup methods
    Good luck
note: what I do is I option boot from my clone, grab a copy of the latest files onto the clone, then erase the internal drive and reverse clone everything on.
What's good abou this, the software does all the work, the drive is bootable, and it optimizes and defragments the files too, so it's zippy.
When a hard drive gets more than 50% filled, it slows down depending what's written on the slower part of the drive, say a new OS X update or program for instance.

Launch the Terminal app in /Utilities/, run these two commands (copy & paste each one separately and hit the return key):

at the Password: prompt, type in your admin password, carefully since nothing displays on the screen, and hit the return key. These should unlock your drives. You might have to restart.

  • I have OSX 7.2 Lion but cannot figure out how to setup a signature on apple mail for my emails.

I just converted to OSx 7.2 Lion and starting using the applle mail instead of Entourage because I got a I phone 4S so I wanted to use the cloud.  But I can not figure out how or if you can setup a signature to use when emailing.  I had it with Entourage and its kinda nice for business so you can put your company name or title after you name without having to type it everytime.  Anyone know if you can do it in Lion?

It's possible that the W2 you used was set up with the EchoSign service. It allows you to draw a signature with a mouse. This is available as well with more recent versions of Reader (10.1+) if the form isn't Reader-enabled or secured. You will see this in the Sign panel when the document is opened in Reader.
You can otherwise get an EchoSign account and upload your document and send it to your customers through the EchoSign service. You can establish a free account to see how it works.

  • Where can I get current info on SysAdmin Certification(s) for Mac OSX SL and Lion?

Where can I get current info on SysAdmin Certification(s) for Mac OSX SL and Lion? The Apple website for this is "under construction" for weeks now...
    Thanks,
    [email protected]

Certification test for OS X 10.7 Lion are not available yet. I assume they will be nearly identical to the test of 10.5 and 10.6. Hopefully, the reason the certification website has been down for a while is that they are updating it with the new information. Though I really wouldn't expect any 10.7 certification test to be available for 2-4 months. Peachpit Press didn't publish their training material for 10.6 until October even though 10.6 was released in August.
As far as the 10.6 Certifications:
Certified Support Professional, 10.6 requires the 9L0-403 exam.
Certified Technical Coordinator, 10.6 requires the 9L0-403 as well as the 9L0-510 (Server Essentials) exams.
The information for the Certified System Administrator, 10.6 is "hidden" on the integral7 website but according to this Wikipedia entry, you need to pass the 9L0-510 Server Essentials exam as well as these three:
    Directory Services
    Deployment
    Security and Mobility
