Smoothcam problem

I have captured around 200 clips in iMovie and imported them in FCP. The fileformat is .dv so the format should be perfect.
My problem is, that when i try to apply a SmoothCam filter to a clip nothing happens, as if the format is not correct. What did i do wrong.
If i try to capture a short clip in FCP the smoothcam filter works perfect. I would have captured all of the 200 clips in FCP, but the log-and-capture workflow is just nok an option with around 200 clips. Maybe there is another way to capture 200 clips in FCP without having to "in-and-out" every clip?
Im looking forward to hear from everyone

Thx, this was the solution i was looking for
now my clips are indicated in the sequence. But my problem is now, that when i mark a few seconds in a segment and start the smoothcam filter, it it begins to analyze my intire half an hour clip instead of the 2-3 seconds i wanted it to analyze. Is there any way to fix this?

  • SmoothCam and Widescreen problem

I have some odd footage that is 4:3 but has a Letterbox built in. It was handheld. I was able to successfully run a SmoothCam operation on it, however... while the smoothing result is beautiful, I can now see the top and bottom of the original letterbox bobbing up and down (as expected). The Filter did an automatic push in to compensate but since the letterbox was part of the original image, it's still visible in frame, now counter-moving the newly steadied shot.
I expected the easy way to clean this expected visual result was to add a "widescreen" matte filter. However it turns out that this tool is applied before the resize of "SmoothCam" or any motion effects to the clip.
Is there anyway to add a Letterbox to a clip that has had motion, or a smooth cam modifier applied to it, without rendering a whole second edit? Essentially applying the effect after the motion, not before? The only thing I can think of is to add a still image that has a built in matte as graphic over the clip. But it doesn't seem that there is any way to apply it as an effect directly to the clip.

Thank you very much for the help. It sounds like you're getting the gist of it. Apply a Widescreen effect after a Motion or SmoothCam so that the Letter box is not effected by those motions, without leaving FCP
Your second solution works pretty well. But it still has a drawback for me, which I apologize for leaving out. While your solution allows me to stay within FCP, I can no longer adjust the clip (slide) within the edit. I would have to go to the nested sequence. I have a committee of clients that I need to be able to work on this edit with them looking over my shoulder. So having the clip looks as close to final as possible while still being able to nudge handles is where I wanted to end up.
It seems the best solution for me is making a .pct file that is a letter box mask embedded in the alpha channel, and simply adding it as a layer over the whole edit. It also seems to make it a bit easier to properly frame the image within the letterbox. (fyi, found this answer on another post... so I didn't just answer my own question. Although not unheard of )

  • SmoothCam: FCP7 or Snow Leopard or QTX or combo to blame?

I have done several searches on the topic but It is not clear as to the specific root of the jitter issue - I read several users with OS 10.5+ are OK with FCP7 so it appears that the problem is SL/QTX??? Does SmoothCam in FCP6 work OK with SL? My reason for the concern is that I may soon be updating from a PPC G5 to a new MacPro that would obviously come with Snow Leopard. I am considering running it on OS 10.5.8 with FCP6 (my current combo) to retain SmoothCam. I have no need/want to upgrade to FCP7.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks in advance.

If there is a jitter issue in Smoothcam on FCP 7 there will be a jitter issue with Smoothcam on FCP 6. There was no real change in the smoothcam filter's code from 6 to 7. It is important to know that if you plan on getting a new MacPro to replace your ageing G5 Quad core you will not be able to take full advantage of the MacPro multithreading & multicore perfomance enhancements with out FCP 7. Since the new Final Cut Studio is designed to take full advantage of the Intel's Quadcore performance in the Lastest MacPro's that Final Cut Studio 2 is not. Although FCS 2 is designed to be capatable with the Intel Processors it does not take full advantage of the Intels perfromance enhancements.

  • Shake smoothCam causes image to jump to the top left.

I'm still trying to perfect this clip. I used the smoothcam node and used all of the advice that you guys have given me but I can't figure out how to fix this problem.....
    http://idisk.mac.com/imacdoyou86/Public/smoothcam.png
What variables do you think I should be using for the translation smooth and rotation smooth? I think I might be doing something wrong because halfway into the clip the whole frame moves to the top left.
Here is a description of the clip - I'm walking into this room holding my camera and I pivot around to show the door I came out of. The floor in the room was hardwood so it was difficult to steady the camera as I was walking. So if you can imagine yourself walking and the camera is shaking up and down a lot. I don't use my zoom at all.

    Try this:
The clipMode parameter provides different ways you can treat the size of the output frame in order to include or exclude this black region. After you’ve analyzed the input image and picked the settings necessary to smooth or lock your shot, you can choose one of three clipMode parameters.
    union
This option expands the rendered frame to include the full area within which the input image is transformed. If you scrub through the SmoothCam’s output with this option turned on, the image appears to float about within a black frame larger than itself. The frame size of the output image is larger than that of the input image.
    intersection
This option contracts the rendered frame to exclude any black area. The result is a stable output image that fills the frame, but with a frame size that’s smaller than the input image.
    in
This option maintains the frame size of the input image as that of the output image. The result is a moving black area that encroaches around the edges of the output image.

  • Re-linking SmoothCam clips???

Many SmoothCam clips in this film.  All have been analyzed.  Everything looking good.  Then I open FCP this morning and ALL the SmoothCam clips now say 'un-analyzed' ... a yellow bar over top.
Where might be analyzed files be found, and is there a way to reconnect them to the clips?
Every single one of the scores of SmoothCam clips has been tweaked to best accommodate the film.  I hate the idea of having to re-do the entire film again.
    All ears,
    Ben

Hello again guys, any luck? I'm about ready to give up, I can't believe there isn't anything that can be done about this. It seems like 1 out of 3 questions on this site come down to getting rid of the , I just can't believe there isn't a way to fix this.
I'm not sure if you guys caught the following msg I posted on Friday. I had several people recommend running this script, but everytime I try to run it I only get coding errors. Maybe this makes sense to you.
    Hi folks,
I'm new to the group and posted a question in a couple of open threads without realizing it's encouraged to start a new thread. I've searched and searched and searched the archives in an attempt to find a solution, but it appears I have a common problem that doesn't have an easy solution.
I transfered my music from notebook to external HD and la la la la ...... I now have ! ! ! in front of all my files. I'm a bit anal when it comes to playcounts, ratings, etc and I don't want to lose all that info. Of the solutions I've so far discovered, using Otto's updating script http://ottodestruct.com/itunes/update.txt appears to be the best solution.
Below is the script and subsequent error I receive.
    var iTunesApp = WScript.CreateObject("iTunes.Application");
    var tracks = iTunesApp.LibraryPlaylist.Tracks;
    var numTracks = tracks.Count;
    var i;
    for (i = 1; i <= numTracks; i++)
    var currTrack = tracks.Item(i);
    currTrack.UpdateInfoFromFile();
the variable between brackets {} are both indented once (couldn't get to do in text)
    Line: 8
    Char: 1
Error: object doesn't support this property or method.
I know little to none about scripting and programming in general. Has anyone else used this script (or knows how to script!) and could help troubleshoot the problem? I posted yesterday on Otto's page as well, but I'm not sure when he will find my particular comment.
Your help would be greatly appreciated,
    Lacey

  • Interlace problem with Final Cut Pro

    Hi,
I have been using Final Cut Studio now from September and I am still learning things. I still have one problem that is persistent and have not found a solution anywhere, not in help or anywhere:
    - I shoot my videos with Canon EOS 5D mark II DSLR at 1920x1080 30p.
    - I want to keep the resolution and 30p, with no interlace spoiling the image
    - I have been recently successful avoiding the disease called interlace, however now I started trying out the SmoothCam filter and each time after using it my image is ruined with interlace. It is in the rendered video as well, no matter if I use Compressor or FCP Quicktime conversion to render, despite I have selected 1920x1080 30p as output.
This is very aggravating because I don't want to know where the interlace is needed since I have no displays that would support interlace and don't know anybody who still would have (everybody is using FullHD something, so I try to create FullHD progressive content only, no tube television support of any kind is desired).
Here is a short example video how the FCP forces interlace. Look at the eyes on 1080p display:
    http://www.katix.org/karoliina/media/aki.mov
Everything in my chain is 1080 30p progressive. I don't have anything interlaced anywhere. Still after smoothcam rendering the result ends this crappy. How can I fix this or is this a bug in the software?

I can't answer the question about MXF.
To the second question, are all parts of the FCS suite inside the top level of the Applications folder?
You must not rename, move them elsewhere or place them in a sub-folder. The updater will not see them.

  • *Rendering problem in FCP 7*

I have read some posts about this problem and I understand the issue is with the media and not with my MacBook. But a little example here: I imported through Log and Transfer a 30 seconds clip from my Canon HG20 camera *in the format AVCHD* who I understand is acceptable by FCP and the line above the timeline is gray, but when insert a little bit of text and the SmoothCam effect the line become red and I have to render again and again so I spent almost 30 minutes for a little clip. I dont know whats the problem and whats wrong here. Can some one explain this for me and give some advice? Thanks in advance.

Im not sure what is better, RT Unlimited or Safe?
Unlimited. This changes the playback quality of the footage to low res or high res, depending on the render bar color. To avoid dropped frames when possible.
Also Im not sure about convert my footage to ProRes. How can I make the conversion?
That's done in LOG AND TRANSFER. How did you get the footage into FCP in the first place? Voltaic? Toast 10? I think they offer that too. What codec is it in now?

  • Question about SmoothCam

I "fixed" a clip with SmoothCam and it worked very well. I switched to high-precision in the video processing tab in the Sequence parameters. The fixed clip now was very distorted. I chose "Run Analysis" and it did not fix the problem but seemed not to re-analyze. I deleted the clip from the timeline and trashed its analyzation file found in the same location as the clip. Put the clip back into the timeline and analyzed. This time it did a full analysis and created a new analysis file. However, the same distored results. Am I doing something wrong? Any ideas?

  • SmoothCam

I am gettimng "tearing" on verticals in a clip treated with Smooth Cam when I create QT movie (H264). Where SmoothCam hasn't been used i don't have the problem. The tearing is only evident on the exported QT file, not in the FCP canvas so unsure where exactly the problem lies. Any help gratefully received. Thanks, Peter

In FCP, set the canvas scale to 100% and look at the scene you have applied smoothcam to. Do you see the same thing as the exported QuickTime?
Click on a source clip in the FCP Browser, and once selected type Command + 9 to see the item properties for the clip. Either report those properties, or take a screen shot of the properties and post that here.
Next. click anywhere on your sequence timeline, and then type Command + 0 {zero} to see the Sequence Settings. Either report those settings here or take a screen shot and post that screen shot here.

  • SmoothCam filter estimates 5 hours to analyze a 9 second clip???

So I have FCS 3 and SnoLeopard and I tried to use the SmoothCam filter for the first time. There were no other filters applied, no motion at all, and no speed adjustments. It began to analyze and estimated 5 hours, no 6, no 7 hours to analyze this 9 second long clip. Standard DVCam footage, nothing unusual about it.
I got this system used and so far it has performed perfectly but I'm wondering if there's something in the configuration that might be creating a bottle neck.
I'd like to run my system specs by some experts to see if you know any reason why it should take that long.
It's a Mac Pro with 2 x Dual Core Intel Xeon 3Ghz processors. I'm assuming 2 dual cores should perform the same as a quad core generally.
Graphic Card is a ATI Radeon X1900 PCIe x16 with 512megs of ram.
    System Memory is 2 Gigs, thats 4 x 512 meg DDR2 FB-DIMM 667MHz ( I realize this might be a little low and I've already ordered an additional 4 Gigs. )
FCPro version is Final Cut Studio 3.0
Do you have any suggestion what could be choking this thing? I don't know if this particular Radeon card (X1900) is a low end card or not. If it is, can someone recommend a better card for this machine?
Any suggestions you can make would be greatly appreciated.
    Rob Fowler

I never would have guessed what was the problem and I'm no noob. I started out on FCPro version 2 on OS9. Seems like very poor planing on the part of the design engineer to have it analyzed the entire captured file. They need to process it with handles, one or two seconds on either side of the in and out points.
    <
We've wondered why setting in and out points does not translate immediately to IN and OUT to Smoothcam. There are workarounds. Sorry about the presumptuous assumption. the issues with optical flow grabbing the entire media have been known for years.
    <div class="jive-quote">But again, thanks. The info was priceless!< </div>
So the question is actually answered? You got something out of me besides attitude? Cool.

  • Exported movie not same using SmoothCam.

I do aerial videography and have a problem I have read about in the Forums but can't find an answer.
Did some footage - used SmoothCam Filter - exported movie - movie looks worse than original footage.
Footage is smooth viewing in FCP but any exported movie is worse than original.
Exported an unaltered movie, imported same in FCP, then used SmoothCam with no differenct.
Looks good in FCP but any movie is terrible.
Some help would be really appreciated because I would love to put this short clip up so a customer can view it.

    Jerry,
You would be surprised with the positive results I have gotten from SmoothCam on aerial ( moving ) footage.
    Looks like a WesCam.
In the past, once the final product is finalized I burn a master DVD and the video in the DVD is just as smooth.
Only when I Export to a .mov do I see the movie as if the SmoothCam was not used at all.

  • Having a hard time with Smoothcam

I got shake last week and I am still learnign it but really like it. I have included a photo at this link to help better explaine my problem.
    http://s111.photobucket.com/albums/n159/larswik/?action=view&current=Shakewindow .jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch1
Long story short: I imported 2 clips into Shake. 1 clip is a handheld camera shot of a piece of metal laying in the sand. The second is a still image that was created in Cinema 4D of a ladder going down. I used rotoshape to create a mask so we could see the stairs going down.
On the still node with the stairs I added grain and extra nodes to help match the video.
The problem that I am having is that I wanted to Smoothcam the footage and I thought if I connect the 2 clips using an OVER node and then under that use a Smoothcam Node thinking that it would also track the still image of the stairs. But the video slides ever so slightly over the Still of the stairs and looks fake.
How can I track the still image to the video clip and smoothcam the video clip?
Here is what I am going for to better help show you what I am doing.
    http://s111.photobucket.com/albums/n159/larswik/?action=view&current=stairs.jpg& refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch1
    Thanks,
    -Lars

    Inconceivable,
it is the first one and second one. My first thought was to smooth out the video shot of the sand to match the still of the stairs in Cinema 4D. that is what I was trying and that is what I posted here. But I can’t get the shot smooth enough so I decided to just try an track the stairs to the motion of the video.
    Patrick,
I had to rethink the approach. Your right Smoothcam is not the right approach. I went with MatchMove and that worked for the most part. I was able to track the hand held footage and the stairs locked right to it.
I could only see the results when I switched to over view in the output type of the match move node. I then tried to use a 4 point mask using the Rotoshape to cut a hole through the hatch door to see the stairs under.
I know what I want to do Track a mask to the 4 points on the door from the sand video clip and then use that same track information for the stairs under so it all stays locked. It’s just getting the right tree components and doing it in the right order.
Here is a shot just to the cinema 4D stairs to give you a better idea.
    http://s111.photobucket.com/albums/n159/larswik/?action=view&current=Hatchtunnel render.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch1
Thanks again for all the help.

  • FCP 7.03 no fxplug (no smoothcam, no motion preset, look nothing)

    Hi All,
I'm having a very serious problem.
I have no effcect in FCP 7.03: such Smoothcam, All Motion preset, or Looks .
All the fxplug seems to don't work.
    I've already done:
    -Deleted all preference files.
-Copyed all fxplug in all plug in folders.
I don't know what else i could do.
Any idea is well accepetd, i cant access to internet right now so i can reinstall my software.
Many thanks in advance. Best regards
    Paul

if you've got motion installed on your system, you can send a clip from fcp to motion for the equivalent of smoothcam.  Actually does a much better job than fcp.  Not sure about other effects.

  • 4k footage in 1080p project for SmoothCam

    Guys,
I have a 4k footage 2:1 (4096x2048) which I want to use SmoothCam to smooth out some bumps. The project setting is 1080p HD. The reason for using 4k in a 1080p project is that I have a big enough picture space for SmoothCam to do rotation and translation(my final product would be BlueRay). Now the problem I'm having is that the 4K image seems to rescale and fit to the monitor window. I was hoping to have full size 4K image in 1080p monitor with much area go over the border so I can see how much I can scale down after SmoothCam has been applied.
Does anyone know what's going on?
    Thanks.
    Shaun

I found that I can make Video Motion scale to 100% instead of default fit to screen 43%. Answered my own question. Thanks!

  • FINAL CUT STUDIO PRO - CAN'T GET "SMOOTHCAM" EFFECT

    PROBLEM:
FINAL CUT STUDIO PRO - CAN’T GET “SMOOTHCAM” EFFECT
    I use a Macbook Pro 17”
Software: Leopard 10.5. External LaCie Hard Drive 1TB
I upgraded my Computer Software to Leopard and reinstalled Final Cut Pro and Motion on my Laptop. It worked fine with SmoothCam, but as I had lost too much space on my Laptop Harddrive, I decided to reinstall the full program, choosing custom location the external LaCie drive.
Since than Final Cut Pro can’t find SmoothCam and it asks to reinstall SmoothCam.
    ➢ ./library/Plug-Ins/FX /Plug< Not Existing
    ➢ ./library-Application Support/ProApps/Internal Plug-Ins/FX Plug<
    This file is empty.
My project I work on at the moment is a film, where I had done a lot of SmoothCams, but since reinstalling it will not find the effect anymore, it asks to reinstall SmoothCam.
In the mean time I tried several times to start from scratch and reinstall the whole Program, but now I’m not even able to register anymore, it will not accept the correct Registration No.
I would appreciate anybodies help very much.
    Zuckerhut

I had a similar problem when I upgraded my MacBook Pro to leopard as well. This is what I did (after several trial and errors)...
1.) Wipe the computer again and reinstall leopard. I suggest doing a custom install and just leave out things you do not need as they just take up valuable space.
2.) Reinstall FCS but DO NOT let it install the additional content as we will get to that part later. Just install the core programs themselves and uncheck the boxes to install the additional content.
3.) After FCS is installed re-run the installer and install the content but change the location to your external drive. At this point I created a folder on my external called "Final Cut Studio" and Created separate folders for each program and its content.
4.) After you have reinstalled the content on to your external drive, go into each program and point them to where the extra content is kept. <--- This step and step 3 arent really needed, but they make things easy for when you have to wipe your computer. This has saved me LOTS of time on reinstalling FCP because now all you have to do is install the core programs from now on.
You once you start FCP all your effects should be there. The main thing here is to do a complete wipe of the system and rebuild. Not just an uninstall / re-install. As far as your registration problem your going to have to call apple. I had a problem with an old serial number where it would not take it anymore after updating the software to 6.0.2 from 6.0. They can give you a new number to use and it does not take too long.
Hope that helps you out some.
