SMPTE TimeCode Format In AE CS5.5 - Tenths Of Seconds?

Hi,
Is the SMPTE TimeCode format in AE CS5.5 customisable so that it can be changed from HH:MM:SS:FF to give tenths and one hundredths of a second rather than the frame count to the right of the seconds counter ( ...SS:nn)?
I have it inserted into a video clip where it is counting upwards as:
00:00:29:23
00:00:29.24
00:00:30:00
For a 25fps video after the 24th frame in the 29th second it jumps to 30.00 seconds. The 24th frame is equal to .96 seconds so my question is can it be configured to display 00:00:29.96 where all units are time units and not intermingled time and frame units.
I have migrated to AE from Premiere Pro in the understanding that the TimeCode is more user friendly in AE but it seems to be the same locked format as it is in Premiere Pro.
I know that I can purchase the DVdate plugin but hope to be able to resolve the format without the need for another purchase.
Any help most appreciated.

Rick,
Thank you for the explanation and the screen capture.
Can the text layer be saved internally so that it is available to other projects or does it have to be created every time the timer is required. If I have a series of events that need the timer inserting, then if the text layer can be saved it will be of benefit. I can see a pitfall in saving the text layer for future use whereby the starting frame needs to be deifned each time but that is a very quick edit if the text layer is available as a preconfigured object.
The working environment in which I am hoping to use the timers consists of up to 12 events in one *ts recorded video stream and my aim is to insert 12 timers, one per event, into an edited version of the *ts recorded video stream before re-rendering the final output.
I have another issue whereby AE CS5.5 seems to be unable to open the *ts recorded files whereas Premiere Pro will open the files, however, that is an issue for another topic.......

  • Converting a number of  frames into smpte timecode format

    Hi all,
I've been thinking about this for a while but don't think I've come up with a good solution just yet. So I wanted to see if anybody could show me a swift and efficient way.
    The problem:
A given number of frames is to be translated into the corresponding smpte timecode. A single frame lasts 1/25th of a second.
So, for example: the timecode 01:30:12:24 (hh:mm:ss:ff) translates to 24+(12*25)+(30*60*25)+(1*60*60*25) = 135324 frames. As you see it's very simple to break it down into frames. But how would you reverse the procedure?
I have two ideas, the first was to subtract from the sum of frames until i have broken it down completely. That seems to involve quite a complicated if structure but I guess it's a reasonably fast way. Next I had the idea that I could iterate through the whole lot and on every 25th iteration step up the seconds variable, and when it reached 60 step up the minute variable and so forth. I do have doubts about the efficiency of that particular code though as this will be a very frequent task in my application.
My guess is the best and only real option is to go with the former idea, but I want to make sure I am not missing a super simple and elegant way of doing this.
    Thanks,
    Johan

You can slightly simplify the calculation with:
    01:30:12:24 (hh:mm:ss:ff)  = 24+(12*25)+(30*60*25)+(1*60*60*25)
    = 25 * (60 * (60 * 1 + 30) + 12) + 24
                  --minutes--
            ------- seconds -------
       ------------- frames -------------
Notice how we multiply by 25, then 60, then 60 again Working from inside the brackets to the outside we multiply by 60, then 60 again then 25, adding some "extra" each time.
This also suggests how you might "reverse" the process. Start with 135324 and begin at the left hand end. If we divide by 25 we get 5412 seconds with 24 frames "left over". 24 is the ff.
We can then divide the 5412 seconds by the 60 to get 90 minutes with 12 seconds "left over". 12 is the ss.
Divide 90 by the next 60 to get 1 hour and 30 remainder. 30 is the mm.
There are no more numbers to divide by so we take the 1 as hh.
Look up the integer operators: / which does division, and % which tells you how much is left over. Basically the division is what you were getting at when you spoke of "subtract from the sum of frames", but more effecient than repeated subtraction.

  • View SMPTE timecode in Flash CS5

Does anybody know how to display SMPTE timecode instead of raw framecount in Flash CS5? I don’t mean in an exported movie. I mean is it somehow possible to view SMPTE timecode in Flash as you are developing a project? There are shareware calculators that will convert one into the other, but doing it that way for every hitpoint is mindnumbingly tedious. Do any plugins do this inside of Flash? Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Display SMPTE timecode in Flash Pro

Is there a way to display SMPTE timecode instead of raw framecount in Flash Pro CS5? I don’t mean burned into an exported movie. I mean in Flash Pro so a person can use it developing a project. Is there a Flash plugin, maybe, that does this?  Ideally it should be resettable to zero for each scene. Any help would be much appreciated. I use a MacBook Pro running Lion. Thanks.

You can't declare the same variables/function more than once in a given timeline.  That's what all the errors are telling you.  The two options that Rob identified will work.
What you can do is extend the actions frame for the length of the occupied timeline so that variables/functions you declare in frame 1 are available in all frames along the timeline.  To do this, you have the code in keyframe 1 and go to the end of the timeline and choose the command to Insert Frame.  You should see the timeline between the first frame and the last becomes one large white frame area.
I will often have two layers dedicated to actionscript.  One for the code that lives in frame 1 that gets shared along the timeline's length, and another for the commands that are specific to certain frames only.
If you need need text to appear/type-out in different frames then you just call the function that performs the typing while sending it the text that it needs to type.  If you need to type it into a different textfield, then you could pass that to the typing function as well so that it targets the desired textfield.

  • Changing Sub Second Timeline Format In AE CS5.5?

    Hi,
Is it possible to change the timeline format in AE CS5.5 so that the sub second granularity is in tenths or hundredths of a second instead of frames?
If I zoom in to the timeline then it initially shows it as whole seconds but then continued zooming results in the sub second intervals being in frames wheres I would like that to be in decimals of a second, is this possible?
    Rgds

Dang, LaRonde, we missed the boat again. It wasn't about accuracy at all, it was about editing and faking it.
    Here's the string of events:
    > Is it possible to change the timeline format in AE CS5.5 so that the sub second granularity is in tenths or hundredths of a second instead of frames?
    > If I zoom in to the timeline then it initially shows it as whole seconds but then continued zooming results in the sub second intervals being in frames wheres I would like that to be in decimals of a
    > second, is this possible?
(Yes and no. Video is video, the fame rates are firmly established. You can create a 100 frame per second timeline but you can't show it on anything. Easier to just stretch 25fps out to 400%.)
    > I wish to insert a stopwatch type of timer into some sports event videos where sub second timing is important. To do this I select the precise point for the commencement of the timer and it is
    > easier if I have a timeline of tenths/hundredths of a second rather than frames.
    > I realise that for a 25fps video I will have an accuracy level of 0.04 seconds rather than 0.01 seconds but 0.04 seconds is OK for me.
    > I can manage with frames for sub second intervals but if decimal sub seconds was available it would have been nice.
(your accuracy is not going to be 0.04, it's going to be no better than 0.08.)
    > What I wish to do is to edit a three hour recording of 6 horse races to cut out all of the audio/video between the races and just have the 6 races plus about 30 seconds lead in before the race begins
    > and 30 seconds after the race completes for each race. In addition, on the precise frame that the starting gates open for each race I want a stopwatch timer to start from 0.00 seconds and count
    > upwards in hundredths of a second. The timer should then run on until the nose of the last horse to finish hits the finishing line. The timer then stops
    >
. and the whole process is repeated for the next
    > race until all 6 races are completed. All 6 races and their timers would then be rendered into one file such as mp4 or flv or wmv.
(You won't to try to edit the footage in AE, do that in Premiere)
Time remap the footage in a longer comp, stretch it out to 400% to get your level of granularity. Set your stopwatch thingy. Did you ever firgure out how to do that? Timers are available in several different ways. Not sure which one you're going to want as minutes/seconds is about as granular as you can get. You can do another timer as a self-contained movie at a higher frame rate or time stretched and then bring it back in and set it alongside the onthe one doing minutes/seconds. You then change the speed of the improted movie to move at one hundred frames/second. This takes a bit of tweaking, again diminishing your possible accuracy.
Then nest this comp back into a 25fps comp. You will render out of AE to a frame-based codec and then take that movie to Adobe Media Encoder for the transcode to your release media format. Do not try to export the movie out of AE; it's possible but it's not reliable. You will need to know the difference between exporting and rendering and encoding.
Real world timers are odd requests in AE. The easiest thing I've found is to create a movie of an incrementing counter and import it. Set up multiple copies and position them carefully between colons. Run each one as a loop at whatever speed is necessary to create the illusion of a real world burned in timer. So I could have a movie that counts from 00 to 99, a new numeral on each frame. Upon import I set it to loop 1000 times then I can speed that up or slow it down to fit whatever rate of change I need. Then I create a movie that counts from 00 to 59 and do roughly the same thing.
If you don't want to build one in AE, you can get a bright LED stopwatch and shoot that using a good macro lens. Key it over the movies.
There are numerous onscreen counters and timers that you can shoot off of a Mac or iPad screen. The temporal resolution of your video format is still going to be an issue since, at 25fps, there will be many frames where the hundreds and tenths digits will be off , incorrect, or cthe shutter will capture more than one numeral.

  • Premiere sends EDL with 'invalid timecode format string'

Following the suggestions in this thread, I am attempting to send an EDL of a Premiere sequence to Speedgrade.
When I attempt to import the EDL into Speedgrade I get this error message:
    ERROR
In point timecode is invalid. Invalid timecode format string(hours): '23813+20'
    in edit 1
    File: 001 LR001 V C 2813+20 23815+17 0:00 1+37
    Line: 2
I've worked very rarely with EDLs but have read the Speedgrade and Premiere guides. I must be missing something but can't tell what.  Here's the details from my project:
I'm editing in 24fps. The video files are generated in After Effects from DPX files. The timecode is based on the DPX file names, with the hour matching the Lab Roll number (so 11:00:00 for Roll 11)
I export an EDL in CMX3600 format. I've tried both default settings and without audio. Same results. I even get the same result if I make a sequence from a single clip and try exporting that EDL.
I don't think this is a Speedgrade issue, because if I try re-importing the EDL into Premiere, it seems like all the clips are only one frame long.
Any suggestions about what I might be doing incorrectly would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Lev

Are you wanting to just simply go from Premiere to Speedgrade? If so why not just use the "send to speedgrade" choice. Also I wanted to point out in the original thread you actually said you didn't want to use speedgrade, I've never used a EDL with speedgrade so I have 0 ideas there, but have you tried just using Premiere's built in send to speedgrade function?

  • Formatting of DW CS5 does not match live browsers

I'm currently using Dreamweaver with CS5's new integration with Drupal.  I have a website formatted and displaying in live view, but the formatting in live view doesn't match the formatting shown in a live browser.   When I preview the site in Browserlab, it reflects the formatting I see in Dreamweaver, NOT the actual formatting shown in live browsers.
Example:  I display the site in a local copy of Firefox 3.6.  That formatting differs from that shown in Dreamweaver AND the Browserlab version of Firefox 3.6.  I thought the whole purpose of Browserlab was to give developers an accurate rendering of a website as it would appear in different browsers?  But if the formatting can differ, then Browserlab is useless as a test device.
I wondered if some of the problem might be because of formatting that I had disabled in Dreamweaver while I was experimenting, but I can find no way to ensure that all disabled formatting has been re-enabled.  Does Dreamweaver remember disabled formatting from session to session?  Is there a way to hunt down (or clear) disabled formatting?
I know there is a context menu to "enable all disabled in selected rule" but what about disabled rules that I can't find?
    Very confusing.....

Have you considered, that actually the problem may be with your Drupal? Sounds like the classic "it's inserting paragraphs instead of soft breaks" and "it's sanitizing strings", both of which may affect placment of elemnts and thus how they render.

  • Export Markers w/ SMPTE Timecode (subtitling-related)

I am about to scream with frustration.
I have a nice, long sequence on the timeline that needs to be subtitled. I've spent the last two days setting markers, extending them until the speaker's finished speaking, and transcribed what they said into the comments field. These markers, in turn, were going to be exported (as an XML file), I'd do a little bit of `grep`ping and BBediting, and I'd end up with an STL subtitle file that I could feed to DVD Studio Pro (see Chapter 13, "Creating Subtitles", on p.456 of DVD Studio Pro's manual).
That was the idea. The problem is that although I have the markers' start and end times in the exported XML file, Final Cut Pro exported the markers as +frame numbers+ - not SMPTE drop-frame timecode. This I did not expect, and so far have not found a workaround.
Is there is any way (other than the XML file) to export plain-vanilla markers with their comments, start times, and end times in drop-frame timecode? And if not, can someone please tell me of some way to convert these frame numbers into drop-frame timecode?
(And while I'm at it, "boo" and "hiss" to Cupertino: If you're gonna have chapter markers and compression markers, why not subtitle markers? Or, heaven forbid, a subtitle track within FCP??)

First: I know this isn't going to help at the moment but you should always test your workflow before embarking on a long complicated process.
Guilty as charged. That said, exporting the markers and writing STLs is still a better workflow than doing subtitles manually in DVDSP.
Second: Do a google for "timecode to frame number converter" like I just did and you'll get a bunch of hits. At least a few within the first few look like they will solve your problem (at least allowing you to do a quick conversion from frame number to timecode).
I always search before asking. Almost all of the hits were timecode calculators, not unit converters. All the programs that were potential candidates turned out to be Windoze apps or iPhone chotchkies. I even took a look at some of the QuickTime sample code and headers just in case there was a "QTFrameNumberToSMPTE"-like function in the API that I could commandeer. No dice.
In the meantime I'm butchering the XML file into a tab-delimited file and using a lookup table in Excel to return the last five digits of the timecode (HH:M:__;_). It works, but on the whole it's a bit more tedious than I would have hoped.

  • Timecode fix for Premiere CS5 with 10.7.2

I'm having the same issue others are reporting of timecode not appearing since upgrading to 10.7.2. I see a fix has been issued for CS5.5, does anyone know if one is coming for CS5?

    Hi Todd,
I found this thread after having the same problem with CS5 and OSX 10.8.
    My thread is here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4863161#4863161
I feel I received a "Windows vs Mac" answer. I just wanted to know if the problem is definietly fixed in CS5.5 or CS6?
    Another discussion here: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/932541
says that there's still a problem with CS5.5.2 on OSX 10.6.8.
I'm running CS5 on OSX 10.8.2 and having the problem. So Apple hasn't fixed anything about an overlay conflict with CS yet.
I'd upgrade CS if someone would please just tell me which version of CS had definitely resolved the conflict. Adobe must have tested for this by now, right?
    Thanks for your time,

  • Putting CS5.5 on a second device?

I recently got a new iMac, and not wanting to fork out more money for new software i tried putting my CS5.5 across from my macbook via usb, this didnt work. I then tried to uninstall it, so i could reinstall it on the iMac, and was unable to do so. So was just enquiring on how i go about this as im pretty sure you can have CS5.5 installed on two of your owned devices.

You are allowed to have two activated installations.  You need to install the software, it cannot be transfered successfully.
If you do not have a download link available in your Adobe account online (or you just prefer elsewise)... You can download the trial version of the software thru the page linked below and then use your current serial number to activate it.
Be sure to follow the steps outlined in the Note: Very Important Instructions section on the download pages at this site and have cookies enabled in your browser or else the download will not work properly.

  • Photoshop CS5 freezes for several seconds in Windows 7

I am using Photoshop CS5.1 Extended with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with 6GB of RAM.  Everything worked good until about a week ago.  Now when I am working in the program all of the sudden everything freezes - the window, menus, everything.  The only thing that will move is the mouse cursor which is the tool that I was last using before the freeze occured.  I have to stop and wait for about 30 seconds then Photoshop unfreezes and starts working again until the next time it freezes.  Turning OFF the Open GL in the Performance Preferences doesn't help.  I have also deleted the preference file with no help.
Does anyone have an idea why this is happening and how to fix it?
    Thanks.
    Bill

    Curt's advice is right on.
An overall freeze could indicate the display driver is crashing and being reset by the OS.  Look in the Windows Event Logs (System and Application) for more evidence of what's happening specifically.  If you're having a driver crash it will cause an event to be logged.
Also check to see if you have any network or hardware resources that were once available but are now missing (e.g., a mapped drive to a server that's not online or a printer that's been unplugged).
