[SOLVED] ATI Catalyst Driver Issues

I'm sure issues with these drivers get posted often, but I'm honestly not entirely sure how to search for this.  I installed the base system with no issues, but when it came to adding a DE, I had some issues.  I tried several times to install the catalyst drivers for my radeon hd 6800.  I installed from the official repository using:
#pacman -S catalyst-dkms catalyst-utils
I had no luck starting X server after that so I tried installing from Vi0l0's unnoficial repository.  This caused X Server to seg fault every time I attempted to start it.
I'm a little confused on how I am even using gnome at this point considering I have not successfully installed a graphics driver.
I blacklisted radeon and uninstalled catalyst and somehow was able to start X Server.  I'm obviously using a lame driver considering every time I move a console window around it moves at around 2 FPS.
How can I successfully install the proprietary fglrx/catalyst drivers?

Thanks for the replies.  It's been a busy week and I have to move my desktop into the kitchen to get internet access because I'm also having ndiswrapper issues.  Here is my Xorg.0.log

  • [SOLVED] ATI Catalyst / Xorg issue with Multihead (3monitor)

    i'm having problems for a long time, with different versions of the ATI Catalyst driver and Xorg,
    right now i'm using this versions,
    catalyst-hook 11.2-2
    catalyst-utils 11.2-1
    lib32-catalyst-utils 11.2-1
    xorg-server 1.9.4.901-1
    xorg-server-common 1.9.4.901-1
    xorg-server-utils 7.6-2
    the catalyst package are from the catalyst server recommended by the Arch Wiki
    http://catalyst.apocalypsus.net/repo/catalyst/x86_64
    the problem that i have is that when i try to pass from one monitor to another, when
    i pass to the 3rd one the X crashes, this happen always with the same monitor no matter what.
    here is the backtrace from the startx logs,

    i wanted to know if there is any official forum / bug tracker  of amd/ati where report this bug,
    or if one of you had this kind of problem before and can give me a hand to resolve this, i would be grateful.
    here is the ati report about the system info,

    solved!
    since the cursor used through the proprietary catalyst driver have issues, use instead the SW cursor,
    Section "Device"
    Option "SWCursor" "true"

  • Can I download the ATI Catalyst driver or something for my new iMac?

    I've got Windows Vista 32 bit and I would like to have the Catalyst control center stuff so I can control the graphics.
    Where can I get this stuff? Can I just download the latest Radeon 4800 series catalyst/driver/software from ATI?
    thanks

    I need to rephrase my question:
    This is the software I need: ATI Catalyst Control Center http://ati.amd.com/products/catalystcontrolcenter/index.html
    It's not the display driver I need, but the control center for an ATI product. I need more specific control, which the Catalyst Control Center would give me.
    Apple's cd only has the display driver and not this control center.
    I downloaded the full suite here: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=vista32/common-vista32
    When this installs no control center shows up. Any idea, anyone?

  • ATI Catalyst driver- Not building-

    Sorry I have been trying to install the Catalyst driver for 4hr's now and getting noware.
    If I try it with yaourt the Catalyst package installs the "libgl" so the Catalyst-ustils will no work. So, If i try it from the Tar files the "utils" first it asks for xorg-server. If I install xorg-server it instals "libgl". If I try to install the "catalyst Tar it telles me I need to install "catalyst-utils" first.
    What path do I take to find the easter egg?
    I have a new elitebook 8530w with Mobility FireGL 5700

    I think that can be called the fact that catalyst doesn't support Linux at all, it just supports three or four outdated distributions, Red Hat, Suse, Ubuntu. And I think that is about it. Why bother with something that will hold back progress, 9.5 came out, no support for kernel 2.6.29 yet and we are about to get 2.6.30 soon.
    Ya, I realy think AMD treats OpenSource like wincrap dose. Like some second horse to dup work they don't feel like doing and to deliberitly make crappy so they can be like "see windoz is better if you want GOOD software you have to pay but we will give you this crap to show how nice we are"
    But on the other hand "my hand" why take it out on the people that just didn't know or just needed to save money. If I had the choice to get the an Intel card I would have. I just don't think arch dev's should take it out on the users.
    But with that said the AUR package works just fine.
    However, now that I have it not crashing I have more problems. I think it would be an easy fix for someone who knows a little bit about this stuff. here is a link to the thread I started for it>>>

  • Ati Display Driver Issue

    Every time I run Live Update 5, it states that the ATI display driver is NOT installed. Additionally, the video card doesnt show up in control center, cpu-z nor AMD Overdrive.
    I have already removed all of the display drivers and reinstalled with no luck. Everything seems to be running fine, but its annoying me and I want it fixed. Stats Below:

  • Satellite A60: ATI graphics driver issue - blue screen error

    Hello,
    I have a Sattelite A60, and I have had it for a year, and now suddenly, I have frequent crashes. The Blue Screen of Death tells me that it is caused by a driver not working properly, namely an ATI driver.

    I deinstalled the display drivers and for a short while it seemed to work. However, the blue screen of death did not reappear, but now my laptop suddenly switches itself off: immediate powerdown. Also, I have had the driver failing to work properly: this resulted in the screen resolution suddenly resetting itself to safe mode. De blue screen I got before mentioned that the fault lay in ati2dvag.dll - the windows error analysis screen that appeared after my reboot told me that the problem with this dll again caused the problem. This was before and after the reinstall of the Toshiba drivers.
    Going to try and reinstall them again now. See if it works this time.

  • [solved]X11: MGA driver issues: video playback (mplayer) and 3D

    Hello,
    I am new to Arch, but I am not new to Linux. I installed Arch yesterday, before I was experimenting with it in VirtualBox and -to test the compatibility with my real hardware- I also tried the "Archie" live CD.
    But there was one thing that the combination of VirtualBox and Archie could not test: the X Window System itself, because in Archie there was an older and VESA-only version and you could not upgrade it and VirtualBox was, well, virtual.
    I have a Matrox card G550, so I installed the xf86-video-mga package. At first it did not work at all (blank screen), but when I switched the console from framebuffer to "normal" text mode it started working, but...
    1) the 3D performance (glxgears) is about half of the FPS I got on my previous Linux system
    2) when I tried to play video with mplayer, xine or vlc, there was blue screen instead of the picture. - I can send you a screenshot, but it's just a blue box where the picture should be
    I discovered, that this bluescreen thing is "solved" with some arcane xorg.conf option I discovered with "man mga" - in fact, I tried each of the options in hope for this to fix:
    Option "ShadowFB" "on"
    but this thing slows the 3D performance even more, so the OpenGL version of Doom is not playable any more :(
    Also the mplayer itself behaves differently than on my old Linux: When I resize the window or go fullscreen, on the old system it resized or fullscreened the entire picture and now just the window is bigger and the picture remains the same. I solved this with -vo sdl, but it seems the picture has poorer quality in this case
    at all, I think something is missing in the xorg configuration, because the mplayer and 3D behavior suggest so.

    the solution was to downgrade the x server and matrox drivers
    (I found the old packages at http://mir2.archlinuxfr.org/archlinux/c … i686.old/)
    the following packages were downgraded:
    xf86-input-keyboard-1.1.1-1.pkg.tar.gz
    xf86-input-mouse-1.2.1-1.pkg.tar.gz
    xf86-video-mga-1.4.6.1-1.pkg.tar.gz
    xorg-server-1.2.0-5.pkg.tar.gz
    xorg-xkb-utils-1.0.2-2.pkg.tar.gz

  • [SOLVED] second hard drive issue

    Hello all,
      I am new to Arch. I have used the buntus, mandriva, opensuse, and a few others. however after much reading I feel Arch will be the linux I want to continue to use.
      Setting it all up was going great. I was following the beginners guide and all was good. i installed kde rebooted logged in and was quite impressed with it all working. Then it happened.
    I shutdown and attached my 80gig ide drive that holds my important files. What I usually do is then copy them to my home directory and then shutdown and remove the drive. I don't want to keep my 80gig in the system as it is on its last legs and is only a tmp storage for a couple weeks.
    with that I the rebooted my machine and when i click on volume in file manager I get :
                                         An error occured while accessing 'Volume (ext3)', the system responded:
                                         org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.PermisionDeniedByPolicy:
                                         org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-fixed
                                         auth_admin_keep_always
    Now I have been thru many threads changing policykit and been thru the hal wiki and well I just can't seem to find the solution.
    thanks for the help.

    ok i finally got it to workl for me .
    in /etc/dbus-1/system.d/hal.conf  :
    <policy user="0">
       <allow send_interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.SystemPowerManagement"/>
       <allow send_interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.VideoAdapterPM"/>
       <allow send_interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.LaptopPanel"/>
       <allow send_interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume"/>
       <allow send_interface="org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.Crypto"/>
    </policy>
    made sure to change user="0" to user="myusername"
    in /etc/PolicyKit/PolicyKit.conf   .. making sure $USER was changed to my user name
    <match user="$USER"> <!-- replace with your login or delete the line if you want to allow all users to manipulate devices (keep security issues in mind though) -->
                   <match action="org.freedesktop.hal.storage.*">
                           <return result="yes"/>
                   </match>
                   <match action="hal-storage-mount-fixed-extra-options"> <!-- for internal devices mounted with extra options like a wished mount point -->
                           <return result="yes" />
                   </match>
                   <match action="hal-storage-mount-removable-extra-options"> <!-- for external devices mounted with extra options like a wished mount point -->
                           <return result="yes" />
                   </match>
           </match>  <!-- don't forget to delete this line if you deleted the first one -->
    then I rebooted and all was well again in the universe. And now I can definately say that Archlinux is a fantastic distro and I also am liking the documenttation and forums for it too. Hats off to the community.

  • [SOLVED][ati catalyst]amdcccle won't start anymore

    Hey all,
    I spent all the day working on my MSI GX60 equiped with
    [jledun@io0 ~]$ lspci | grep VGA
    00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Richland [Radeon HD 8650G]
    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Neptune [Radeon HD 8970M] (rev ff)
    Everything was running fine until today.
    To show something to my son, I tried to run a VirtualBox machine but it couldn't because :
    'Your machine tries to run 3D acceleration but 3D is not defined on your host' or something like that.
    So I tried to run 'sudo amdcccle' or 'kdesu amdcccle', no way, it doesn't start.
    I don't have any error displaying in my cli.
    I just can kill it after a few minutes.
    I've read somewhere on an ubuntu forum that it was necessary to install qt, so I did but it changed nothing.
    I really need my virtual machines, that's windows 7 and XP clients, if I deactivate 3D acceleration in configuration, I guess windows won't like it...
    Help !

    I followed wiki for uninstall catalyst, reboot, then clean install of catalyst, reboot, it's the same.
    But I've found a way to make it work : disable lxdm and reboot.
    Then I remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb at each boot, before running startx. Then I'm able to open amdcccle, check configuration, fglrxinfo gives :
    [jledun@io0 ~]$ fglrxinfo
    display: :0 screen: 0
    OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
    OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 8650G
    OpenGL version string: 4.3.12614 Compatibility Profile Context 13.25.18
    If I reboot again, the problem appears again, then I kill X, remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb again and it works.
    I'm going to see if the problem is the same with razor-qt.

  • [SOLVED] ATI catalyst problems

    I just did a pacman -Syu and ran into problems with my ATI radeon hd 7870 card.
    After reboot, I noticed that my GPU fan speed was too loud because this command does not work anymore:
    aticonfig --pplib-cmd "set fanspeed 0 25"
    PPLIB command execution has failed!
    ati_pplib_cmd: execute "set" failed!
    Other commands fail too:
    aticonfig --od-gettemperature
    ERROR - Get temperature failed for the Default Adapter - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series
    Also, when I move windows around in Gnome (fallback mode), or when I scroll in gedit, the movement is not smooth, you can see how they redraw at their new position slowly.
    I am not experienced with catalyst troubleshooting. Is there any guidance on how to find out what's wrong?
    PS:
    I just found this in the Xorg log file:

  • Ati catalyst 4.4 and up won't install

    I can't install any Ati catalyst driver versions above 4.4, I have a Gecube Radeon 9800XTreme and a Gecube 9200Se and drivers up to and including catalyst 4.3 install fine with either card but any version above gives message "Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration. Please make sure you have the required hardware or software." Same goes for any of the modded drivers in those versions. All works fine in my other Asus Amd based computer. Any one else had these issues and maybe a solution.

    If you are trying to install Control Panel you need to have Microsoft .net framework installed first.

  • Gnome 3 striped panel using Catalyst driver

    I'm currently using the properietary ati catalyst driver by necessity, not choice.  The open source driver does not have good power management and in particular will not control the fan properly.  This is a well known bug and has been acknowledged on this and other forums often.  Honestly, the only reason I can think of for anybody using the open source ati driver is if they 1) have an old gpu 2) are using a desktop pc and don't notice the sound 3) notice the sound and heat but know no better.  After installing gnome 3, the panel ends up looking like this:
    which isn't even my screenshot.  This was posted on a stackexhange forum and the solution provided was to simply use the open source drivers.
    I'm hoping that someone here has found the correct solution, although I'm not even sure if one exists yet.  It's just incredibly strange that gnome 3 would have this sort of problem when no other panel I know of, including Unity, does.

    I have seen enough of this. Conclusion is, if you have to use Catalyst (properietary), forget about GNOME Shell for a while. Not only that top panel, but also there exists several corruptions here and there with Mutter(?) + Catalyst. Use the fallback mode if you can't get any further, or better use Compiz+Cairo-Dock to completely replace the GNOME window manager in GNOME/GTK3.
    Even if you can get the shell working, it's not worth using it at this stage. Check later.

  • Xorg update seems to break ATI Catalyst

    Hi all
    Just a quick note for users of the proprietary ATI Catalyst driver, the latest Xorg update seems to break it (at least on my system).
    Boot sequence proceeds as normal until GDM loads, then the screen oscillates slowly between black and white.
    Any suggested fix?

    Hi there
    Did Pacman upgrade your kernel alongside Xorg?. Maybe you need to rebuild the fglrx module.
    Best of Luck

    When I finish installing it just holds at the end of the boot cycle with no error I can only TTY into the system. Im not really sure what outputs you require but ill post a lspci.

  • [SOLVED] Dual-Screen Setup with ATI Catalyst

    I'm having a beast of a time trying to set up X to work on my two screens.
    Screen 1 is a 23" screen connected with a DVI cable.  My preferred resolution for this one is 1920x1080.  Screen 2 is a 17" screen (4:3) connected with a VGA cable.  My preferred resolution for this one is 1280x960.
    I tried using "aticonfig --initial=dual-head".  This does not produce a working xorg.conf file.  Specifically, my smaller monitor simply complains about not being able to display the given video mode.  Running xrandr (from the main screen) shows only that output as being "connected" - the rest of them (including the CRT outputs which seem to correspond to the VGA port) as "disconnected".
    I've spent about 5 hours searching for an answer to this, and the only ones I seem to be able to find are nvidia-specific.
    I have an ATI Radeon HD 4850 or 4870 - I honestly forget which, although the drivers should be the same.  I'm using the catalyst driver from the AUR, because I'd like to have 3D acceleration.
    I've read through the entire xorg.conf man page, and tried a few things from there (including writing my own xorg.conf from scratch).  Unfortunately, this seems incredibly useless, as the man page doesn't list any of the options that I seem to need (for example, I've read about and tried the "PairModes" option under "Device").
    I can probably eventually figure this out, but it would be nice to have a few pointers.  For example:
    Should I have one or two "Device" sections in xorg.conf?  Should I have one or two "Screen" sections in xorg.conf?  Where can I find a full list of possible "Option" keys, at least for the Device section?  Should I be using Xinerama (I've tried with and without, to no avail).
    EDIT:  I solved this by using the aticonfig tool some more, and not by messing around with xorg.conf.  Specifically, the command:
    aticonfig --initial=dual-head --xinerama=on --resolution=0,1920x1080 --resolution=1,1280x960 --screen-layout=right
    I'll leave this here in the hopes that it can help someone else.

    If you aren't playing games, it may be worth it to check out xf86-video-ati. Then you can configure your displays the standard way with xrandr.
