[SOLVED] ATI catalyst problems

I just did a pacman -Syu and ran into problems with my ATI radeon hd 7870 card.
After reboot, I noticed that my GPU fan speed was too loud because this command does not work anymore:
aticonfig --pplib-cmd "set fanspeed 0 25"
PPLIB command execution has failed!
ati_pplib_cmd: execute "set" failed!
Other commands fail too:
aticonfig --od-gettemperature
ERROR - Get temperature failed for the Default Adapter - AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series
Also, when I move windows around in Gnome (fallback mode), or when I scroll in gedit, the movement is not smooth, you can see how they redraw at their new position slowly.
I am not experienced with catalyst troubleshooting. Is there any guidance on how to find out what's wrong?
PS:
I just found this in the Xorg log file:
[ 2.672] (EE) fglrx(0): atiddxDriScreenInit failed. Probably kernel module missing or incompatible.

Yes, I use calalyst-dkms.
I enabled dkms.service and rebooted, but the problem persists:

    solved!
since the cursor used through the proprietary catalyst driver have issues, use instead the SW cursor,
    Section "Device"
    Option "SWCursor" "true"
    EndSection

  • [SOLVED][ati catalyst]amdcccle won't start anymore

    Hey all,
I spent all the day working on my MSI GX60 equiped with
    [jledun@io0 ~]$ lspci | grep VGA
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Richland [Radeon HD 8650G]
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Neptune [Radeon HD 8970M] (rev ff)
Everything was running fine until today.
To show something to my son, I tried to run a VirtualBox machine but it couldn't because :
'Your machine tries to run 3D acceleration but 3D is not defined on your host' or something like that.
So I tried to run 'sudo amdcccle' or 'kdesu amdcccle', no way, it doesn't start.
I don't have any error displaying in my cli.
I just can kill it after a few minutes.
I've read somewhere on an ubuntu forum that it was necessary to install qt, so I did but it changed nothing.
I really need my virtual machines, that's windows 7 and XP clients, if I deactivate 3D acceleration in configuration, I guess windows won't like it...
    Help !

I followed wiki for uninstall catalyst, reboot, then clean install of catalyst, reboot, it's the same.
But I've found a way to make it work : disable lxdm and reboot.
Then I remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb at each boot, before running startx. Then I'm able to open amdcccle, check configuration, fglrxinfo gives :
    [jledun@io0 ~]$ fglrxinfo
    display: :0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 8650G
OpenGL version string: 4.3.12614 Compatibility Profile Context 13.25.18
If I reboot again, the problem appears again, then I kill X, remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb again and it works.
I'm going to see if the problem is the same with razor-qt.

  • [SOLVED] ATI Catalyst Driver Issues

I'm sure issues with these drivers get posted often, but I'm honestly not entirely sure how to search for this.  I installed the base system with no issues, but when it came to adding a DE, I had some issues.  I tried several times to install the catalyst drivers for my radeon hd 6800.  I installed from the official repository using:
    #pacman -S catalyst-dkms catalyst-utils
I had no luck starting X server after that so I tried installing from Vi0l0's unnoficial repository.  This caused X Server to seg fault every time I attempted to start it.
I'm a little confused on how I am even using gnome at this point considering I have not successfully installed a graphics driver.
I blacklisted radeon and uninstalled catalyst and somehow was able to start X Server.  I'm obviously using a lame driver considering every time I move a console window around it moves at around 2 FPS.
How can I successfully install the proprietary fglrx/catalyst drivers?

  • ATI Catalyst 4.9 problem

I searched for this problem with this board in this forum but didn't find anything.  I just upgraded the driver for my built by ATI 9600XT to Catalyst 4.9 without the .NET Framework thing from Catalyst 4.4.  I tried running Aquamark and got a reboot both times I tried it.  The first time was about 30 seconds in, the second time was about 5 seconds in.  I re-installed 4.4 and it works fine.  Has anyone else had this exact problem?  If there's already a post on this, please direct me.  Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.
By the way, it's not an overheat or power supply problem as I have plenty of fans and a somewhat competent power supply.  Overdrive was not activated either.  Everything in the system is at stock speeds.  This is the first time I've ever had a spontaneous reboot andI built this PC last December.  I can't think of anything other than the driver that could cause this.

Here's the verdict.  I got crashes that caused complete reboots and crashes that only crashed back to the desktop and caused the error report thing to come up with both the ATI Catalyst 4.9 Driver and the Omega Driver with fastwrites enabled and disabled with AGP at 8X.  I knew that lowering AGP to 4X fixed a lot of other people's problems, but I was hesitant to try it since I had always been rock stable.  Based on the adivce in this thread, I lowered AGP to 4X and Aquamark 3 finished.  However, I got a score of 30,436 at 30.44 fps where I used to get 31,273 at 31.27 fps with Catalyst 4.4 AGP X8 Fastwrites on.  I know that this is very minor an I will see no real world difference, but an "upgraded" driver should not cause decreased performance or require the user to use less aggressive settings, shame on ATI.
McGeyser, I've been playing for about 12 years I guess.  Unfortunately for me now, I didn't force myself to learn right-handed.  What's wierd is that I'm right handed for most things, but I do write, eat, shoot a slingshot, play guitar, and brush my teeth left handed.....59 reissue....nice

  • Overheating the laptop - Ati driver problem (SOLVED)

    Hi ppl.
I have Acer Aspire 5732 Z laptop. Intel Pentium processor T4400 2.2 GHz. Ati Mobility Radeon HD 4570 512 MB VRAM, 15.6", 3 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD.
I successfully solved all the problems during the installation, but this one I can not handle. The laptop is HEATING too much. I also have Ubuntu 9.10 on the other partition and its all fine. Its working on the temperature of ~46 C. And my Arch is working on the temperature of ~60 C. So its about 15 C difference between Ubuntu and Arch. Way too much.
Arch is running in KDE mode. Have to add that I installed all KDE packages. Maybe the cause of this problem ?
I am using the proprietary Ati Radeon driver. I tried to change it with open source Ati driver but Xorg refused to configure again (gave me a blank screen).
I checked Wiki on laptop, but didnt succeded to solve this problem. Here s my rc.conf:
    MODULES=( acpi-cpufreq )
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus hal !acpid !acpi-support powernowd wicd !network !netfs alsa crond laptop-mode kdm)
    powernowd configuration:
    OPTIONS="-q -u 30 -l 10"
acpi-support is blacklisted because I installed it from AUR and didnt managed it to work. Its just saying "no permission" during the boot. I actually installed it because I read that its Ubuntus Acpi management. ~ I repeat Acpi is working fine on my Ubuntu.
I can also show my laptop-mode configuration files - if needed.
I am a newbie for Arch but I rlly done my best on this issue as I want to use this system. I think its great and highly configurable and I just love the fact its a rolling distro. But I cant use it overheating.
    So, please help.

I am using lmsensors on Arch and some kind of panel sensor on Mint, but its ok for sure. Few minutes ago I checked temperature on Arch and it was 56 C. Then I rebooted and when I logged into Mint it was 56 C. But few mins later temperature normalized to 45 C in Mint. After lsmod I logged into Arch again and temperature raised to 54 C.
So its Arch problem for sure.
    @hokasch
I am not sure about noise level of fans. Sounds similar to me. But maybe its a fan problem. I know its sometimes loud and sometimes silent. Probably depends on the system temperature. Maybe Arch cant control it normaly. Is there any kind of software that is used for fan speed ?

  • ATI Catalyst 4.4 Problems

    Hi, Folks.
I tried to install the new ATI Catalyst 4.4 today.....ran into major problems.  My keyboard wouldn't work, when I clicked on icons, it would open up the icon I clicked on as well as open up the last window I was previously working on but had since closed.  I uninstalled 4.4 and reinstalled 4.3, everything is working fine.
Just wanted to give people a heads up and see if anyone else had similar problems.  Not sure if it is a problem with the MSI mobo or the new catalyst suite.  I have a ATI 9500 Pro with a modified bios to allow overclocking (it's the only way I can get the card to run stable with this board).  I've never had problems with the Catalyst drivers in the past.

I got no problems here with Catalyst 4.4, and I have noticed that the gamma problem with OpenGL is fixed at least with games like ET and RTCW.

  • Firefox 6.0.1 causes extreme problems with ATI Catalyst 10.x drivers on a Win7 x64 system. When I roll back to Firefox 6.0, no problems. Can this be resolved?

Firefox 6.0.1 causes extreme problems with ATI Catalyst 10.x drivers on a Win7 x64 system. Took me quite awhile to identify, but when I roll back to Firefox 6.0, no problems. Once Firefox recognizes this and reinstalls the 6.0.1 update then severe display driver problems occur causing very erratic display behavior and ultimately rendering the system inoperative. The problem appears to occur within a minute or two after Firefox has been opened and it occurs even if Firefox has been subsequently closed prior to the actual event taking place. I have attempted this 6 times just to ensure that the problem was associated with the 6.0.1 update.

I have already reinstall this drive and the graphic drive. But the problem is not solved. I am wondering what could I do now?

Right click on the battery in the task bar and make sure your Switchable graphics are set to Performance, if it is in energy savings the ATI control panel will not function, you need to use the Intel graphics setup instead.

  • ATI Catalyst 9.2 and "Incompatible display adapter has been disabled."

    Hi,
I have this issue... on 3 GPUs. Only one is working.  2 x 3870x2 in crossfire / Vista x64 SP1
I tried everything possible : uninstall all ATI software before, clean registry, delete files, temporary files, many uninstall and reboots, trying different settings in BIOS . Same issue.
This time I choose to install 9.2 drivers only (without Control Center), but the result is the same.
The problem appears since v8.11, but I was able to install at the end by cleaning / reinstalling many times.
v8.12, v9.1, v9.2 are impossible to install correctly on my system. I'm very disapointed.
I've been waiting about 6 month for 8.10 to have stable drivers...
Maybe installing ATI drivers should be proposed to Olympic Games category...
I asked to ATI if they have a tool to clean all previous drivers, and they suggested this link :
    https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=1447
    Look at the utility cat-uninstaller.exe date : 10/08/2003 !!!
It's possible that the problem comes from old drivers, but I refuse to format / reinstall the system each time ATI release a new driver. I did that for 8.12 and I had the same issue.

That's the olny way to solve this issue.
    My system below :
    AMD Phenom 9950 BE / Sunbeam Core-Contact Freezer / ASUS M3A32-MVP DELUXE-WIFI-AP (AMD 790FX/SB600 - BIOS v1406) / OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 8Go ( 4*2Go ) PC8500 1066MHz Cas 5-5-5-18 / Quad CrossfireX : dual MSI R3870X2-T2D1G-OC - ATI Catalyst 8.11 / RAID0 : 2x Samsung - Spinpoint F1 - 320 Go 7200 rpm SATA II 16 Mo cache / PSU : Thermaltake - TOUGHPOWER 1200W / VISTA x64 SP1

I did tests on my second system :
    System 2 :
    AMD Athlon X2 6400+ / ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe (AMD 790FX/SB750) / 8GB DDR2 800MHz Corsair Doninator / RAID0 2x Samsung 200 Go SATA II
    CrossfireX : 2x MSI RX3870-T2D512E-OC (v120 + v803) / ATI Catalyst 9.1 / Cooler Master Real Power M620 (620W/efficiency >80%) / VISTA x64 SP1
    On this system :
Catalyst 9.1 working and Crysis Warhead too
Catalyst 9.2 installation is OK, but :
        - Crysis Warhead hang at 85% when a level is loaded
        - Crysis v1.2.1 load correctly, but hang after 1 minute
        - I noticed that when I lanch CPU-Z 0.3.2 I have on "Bus Interface"
            -card 1 : PCI-E x16 2.0@ x16 2.0
            -card 2 : PCI-E x16 2.0@ x16          (in catalyst 8.10, both are @2.0)
    Uninstall 9.2 and visual c++ x64, reboot, install 9.1 => 2 x GPU disabled error 43 !!!
Going back to 8.10 : it's the last working stable revision from MSI.
For users who use MSI Live update, and drivers from MSI : what are the last ATI Catalyst revision drivers furbished by MSI ?
I would like to have feedback (vista x64, crossfirex).
    Thanks

  • ATI Catalyst 13.3 beta 2 Poisonous to Photoshop CS6

Last night I installed the new ATI Catalyst 13.3 beta 2 driver.  The 13.2 betas had worked seemingly okay.  But with 13.3 beta 2, Photoshop CS6 13.1.2 crashes in Advanced mode when any document is opened...

I'm still trying things, to see if there are workarounds, or modes in which it works, but for now, my advice:
Avoid installing Catalyst 13.3 beta 2.
I'll follow up here when I learn more.
    -Noel

One manifestation of this new driver version is that Photoshop CS6 now thinks there is an insane amount of VRAM...
This is a problem that showed up in Catalyst 12.10 and persisted through 13.1, then was miraculously solved in 13.2 betas.  Now it has returned.
And from what I've been able to see during testing, it crashes Photoshop in all GPU accelerated modes, not just Advanced.

  • Do Not install ATI catalyst 13.1 update

A recent update for Radeon HD 7800 (and possibly other models) caused almost all BLUE colors to display as BLACK on the screen in Photoshop CS6 (I'm running Win 7 64 and CS6 64) if your image is in an RGB Profile.
If you drag the image window around, the blue shows normally.  If you take an eyedrop sample of the color, it is actually blue... but it still looks black in the image window.  If you change the image profile to CMYK, the blue looks fine.  Change it back to RGB and it's black again.
Adobe support people on chat, with a shared screen, messed with my system and settings, uninstalled and reinstalled, deleted all of my preferences and profiles... basically goofed around for over 4 hours and couldn't figure out any solutions.
After I got them off my computer and spent almost two hours getting all of my settings and profile set back up, I did a trace for changes on my system.  I found that AMD/ATI had done an update, Catalyst 13.1, the day before, so I rolled back my video driver and... PRESTO.  Problem solved.

Thank you for your post.  ATI has known about this problem for quite a while, so they shouldn't have been goofing around.

Confirming what Curt has said, I've been running Catalyst 13.2 beta 5 for quite a while and it's very stable - and solves the aforementioned problems.

  • ATI HD5770 Problem

Hey guys I was wondering if anyone could help me solving a little problem that  I have with my newly purchased graphic card.... It's and ATI HD5770 i just can't get it working with the opensource driver xf86-video-ati the login manager just won't start up I'm using the vesa driver for now i just don't wanna install the catalyst driver...
By the way is that card supported by the opensource driver?
    thanks

The reason why I didn't wanted to install the proprietary driver is because I was using the opensource one with my old graphic card and I was very satisfied with it... but since the series HD5XXX is not supported I've decided to install the proprietary and thank you for sharing your opinion about the catalyst driver And yes its working smoothly
    Thank you once again

  • Probs with ATI Catalysts Drivers

I’m currently using ATI Catalyst Drivers 6.14.10.6404 (3.9) for my ATI Radeon 9600xt.
If I upgrade to the latest ATI or Omega Drivers (4.7 I think), my card crashes and is very unstable.
    my current graphics settings are:
    enabled VPU recover
    fast write is on
    AGPx8
Why does 3.9 work and 4.7 not work, I have only had this problem since changing to this board.
    Any help appreciated.

Well I hope it works for you engrrowl!  I was installing a slipstreamed version of XP with SP2.  But that sure didn't help me.  I would randomly have my screen corrupt with my 9700.  And that stupid card has given me headaches since I got an LCD.  So driver incompatibility used to make my screen go black all the time.  It would then revert to normal (maybe!).  But there were many times I had to shutdown by the keyboard and disconnect the DVI cable to get it to work again.  And the LCD is a Samsung so it's not cheap.
I broke down the other night and when I had to reinstall WinXP from scratch I reverted to an older GF4.  This morning I ordered a Geforce 6800, and it will "upgrade" fine.  But if I tried to go from an ATI to an Nvidia I would have had to reload my OS again.    So it worked out for me.
But it's strange that switching video cards solved all my "issues".  That and the fact that I've never really like ATI's drivers means I will never get another of their cards.
