[SOLVED]Cannot detect battery or power supply before a power event

The system cannot detect my battery (or AC adapter) since boot, and before a power event
like the following: (the acpi command provides no output)
$ acpi
After I do one of the below
1. plug in AC adapter
2. remove AC adapter
3. cover my screen and uncover my screen
4. drain my battery to low power (probably 15% or 20%)
The system can detect my battery/AC
like the following:
$ acpi
Battery 0: Charging, 61%, 01:18:24 until charged
$ acpi
Battery 0: Discharging, 61%, 05:17:15 remaining
Is this a bug or solved issue?
or should I update my bios?
NOTE: This issue does not exist in Windows (8.1), on the same machine
The laptop is Dell Inspiron 14 7437, without touchscreen

I'm glad I could help!
To complete the answer on whether it's a bug or not, it has to do with your BIOS expecting Windows rather than Linux.  So you need to tell it that Linux is running and without the parameter, the kernel will return false if asked whether Linux is running.  This causes some features to just simply not work.
If adding that parameter makes the screen's backlight to not work, you may want to add "acpi_backlight=vendor" to it also, but it actually caused my computer to not boot and seemed to not make a difference (probably should have mentioned that).

My hp Compaq nx6310 laptop cannot detect battery any more after the battery contacted water, please help.

Thanks for your reply;but the battery is not up to 5-6 years old.The battery is original hp battery that I bought in the year 2010 and it was working perfectly before this incident, the battery was in the laptop before the water touched it.The laptop did not stay in the water for up to 12hours and I dried it properly before using it again;the laptop works perfectly at present whenever it is powered on but the battery remains on 0% for more than 5 hours even when it tells you “plugged in and charging“,sometimes it says“plugged in,not charging“.What should I do? Please help me out.

  • MBP 13'' Cannot detect battery & battery indicator light won't off

This morning, I found my mbp cannot detect the battery and the green battery indicator lights on the side of the mac won't switch off even if I turn off the computer and disconnect the power supply. Also with the problem that the mac cannot detect the battery, mbp cannot be switch on without power supply. I just got my mbp on Feb 2010 and I really enjoy it. These problems worried me a lot. So I went to apple retail store straight away. The staff has a quick look over the battery information on "About this mac" and updated the newest software, and suggests me to make a booking with Genius Bar. Then I went home. I did some searching on google and read some information about SMC and hardware testing. I did the hardware testing first. With a quick scan the computer provide an error code:
    4SNS/1/40000000:TB3T-128.000
And then I did the SMC procedure. This is where I solve the battery and indicator light problem. Now, the mac can detect the battery, the indicator lights return to normal and the battery can be charged. Seems all fine. But do you think I should cancel the booking with Genius Bar since the problem is solved? Or do you suggest to still bring into store and have a check? Thank you.

Reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and advise us if that helped.

  • [Solved] Cannot detect camera with udev, only with HAL.

I have removed HAL as I realize it is being deprecated and HAL also created issues with frequent 2-3 second HDD access. I have managed to get udev and pcmanfm to detect and mount pen drives using the udev wiki and new rules.
However, my digital camera is not detected, nor even assigned a device name (unless I use HAL).
Output from "tail -f /var/log/messages.log" after insertion of camera:
Jul 31 15:49:02 eagle kernel: usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 9
Note udev does NOT assign even a device name. The camera is also not detected via "lsusb". Therefore, without a device name I cannot use:
    # udevadm info -a -p $(udevadm info -q path -n [device name])
to even begin writing udev rules.
EDIT and PS: I have copied the /lib/gphoto ruleset file to /etc/udev/rules.d and restarted udev to no effect as well.
EDIT(2): This problem is now "partly" solved. I can detect the camera using "gphoto2" command line, but only as root, so the problem appears to be a udev permission problem, which for some reason HAL did not have.
EDIT(3): Added myself to "camera" group, copied permissions line to libgphoto rules in /etc/udev/rules.d as per camera wiki and problem solved.
It seems that changing over to udev at the moment is not exactly straight forward. I still cannot get automounting of CDROM drive either - but will get there eventually. (I hope udev becomes more user friendly than HAL, because at the moment HAL wins on that front!).

  • [solved]Cannot detect SD card after update

    Hello all,
I frequently mount an SD card using:
    $ sudo mount -t vfat -o uid=me,gid=users /dev/sdd1 /media/SD
However, after my latest pacman -Syu, my SD card isn't being detected by fdisk -l.
I tried hooking up an external USB SD card reader, but the result was exactly the same.
I'm terribly sorry that I don't have any idea what broke it (udisks perhaps?)
I'm using 2.6.33-ARCH, and Openbox. The SD card is a Kingston 4 GB SD HC that has always worked in the past and can still be detected on my uIEC/SD device.
Does anybody know how I can fix this?
EDIT: Today's update seems to have fixed the problem (ntfs-3g perhaps?).

The iTune cannot detect my iPhone 4S. I have already tried all methods suggested, including re-installling iTune, re-activating Apple Mobile Device, plugging in various USB ports, and etc. I use windows 7. How can I solve this?

The new cable is completely new, and my computer can detect the phone as a drive, and battery charging is ok. So I believe the USB cable works properly. It is so weird that just iTune itself cannot detect the phone, and it is of the most updated version. What else can I do? Thanks.

Yes, I think most of us do understand what open source software is. It sounds as if you don't. Here's some information:
Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form: the source code and certain other rights normally reserved forcopyright holders are provided under an open-source license that permits users to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the software.
Open source software is very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open-source software is the most prominent example of open-sourcedevelopment and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated content or (legally defined) open content movements.

Yes, Tom Wu of Stanford wrote a paper on something called Secure Remote Access Protocol. It's a form of Asymetric Key Exchange and has nothing to do with hacking anything. It's actually intended to protect data.

Unfortunately I am not local. I live in Europe.
Contact the Geek squad and let them know what the problem is.
Tell them that there are important documents on your notebook that you cannot lose.
That would mean asking them if they can guarantee that you won't lose your documents.
Ask them if they have access to a utility that will reset the password for you without requiring a reinstallation of the operating system. If they  don't have a clue when you ask about MSDaRT's Locksmith utility, then find another shop. Many cities have independent technicians who can do this for you.

  • Cannot detect Samsung Camcorder's usb connection

    Hi
We are using Macbook build 10xxx with 10.6.x version of OS, last week the laptop was able to detect the Samsung camcorder and we are able to trancfer videos into the laptop...yet today it cannot detect it.
The Macbook can detect USB sticks without any problem.
    Any suggestions?
    Please help.
    Thank you.

In a lot of cases the notebook computer doesn't supply enough (or any) power through the firewire connector.  If the camera requires a power source that could be the problem.  If you have the option, plug an AC adapter into the camera before plugging in the firewire cable.

  • Error 1074397153 Cannot Detect Recognizable Video source

I'm using a single PCI1410 card to acquire images from two cameras and display those images in Labview using the Multiple Camera Acquisition.vi found on the NI website.  I'm running Windows XP, and my two cameras are Sony XC-HR70's with a resolution of 1024X768 each, running ~15FPS (total for both) thru the frame grabber.  I have one camera as a master, supplying the HD & VD synch signals for both my slave camera and the PCI1410.  Here is my problem:
Whenever I change the light intensity for the cameras drastically (ie, abruptly shutting off the light source or blocking the camera), I get an error in Labview:  "1074397153 @ IMAQ Extract Buffer.vi.   NI-IMAQ: Cannot detect recognizable video source".  If I perform a gradual decrease in light intensity, I don't get the error.  Unfortunately, the users often need to toggle on and off my camera illuminators abruptly, so a gradual transition is not an option.
I thought this was a MAX issue, but it is not-MAX gives no errors regardless of light intensity.
I also tried decreasing the white level and/or increasing the black level-(per NI Knowledgebase post) all that did was decrease my image quality, error still appeared.  The error first appears in imgwaitforimaqoccurrence.vi which is inside imgsessionexaminebuffer.vi.
If I could somehow ignore the error and insert a ~ 500mS delay and then re-attempt to acquire video lock, it would probably work.  Just not sure how to do this, or if it is the right approach.  Any ideas?

    Hey wowens,
I was wondering if you ran just a simple grab example program, and perform the same action of shutting off the camera's light source, do you get the same error? The error you are getting means that the frame grabber is not receiving any data from the camera in the expected timeout period. There shouldn't be any reason why decreasing the light quickly should stop the camera from sending data, as the camera should still be sending some data, like all black pixels or something. I might suggest tapping the data coming in with an oscilloscope to see if the data stops when you decrease the light. If you can't do this, I might suggest altering the code so that you don't stop the loop. You could also look at the shipping example called LL Scan Multiple Channels.VI. What version of the NI-IMAQ driver are you using? I would suggest that you upgrade to the most recent if you don't have it. Other than that it sounds like you need to find out what is causing the error before you start to find a solution.
I hope this helps at least a little. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks, and have a great day.
    Regards,
    DJ L.

  • Computer cannot detect the camera.

I have had a Powershot A590, and could connect it to my HP, but now when I try to download images the computer says it cannot detect my camera.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Katyboy,
Is your notebook connected to AC power?  If not, please do connect it.  This will ensure it is adequately powered so it can properly work with the camera.
Do you have any other devices connected to your notebook?  We only recommend, at least as a test this time, connecting the camera to the notebook.  Other devices, such as printers, scanners and external drives may interfere with proper communication.
Does your notebook make a sound when the camera is connected and powered on in playback?  It should make a sound, indicating that it at least detects the camera.  If it does not, try connecting it to another USB port.
What program are you using to attempt to download the images from the camera?
If this is a time sensitive-matter, additional support options are available at Contact Us.

  • T500 Battery Error - Power Manager V3.59

Background: T500 running Power Manager indicated battery fully charges to 100% when connected to power supply, and battery life of approximately 2 hours when disconnected from power supply.
Problem:  After updating Power Manager from V3.48 to V3.59 the battery indicator shows a red X and there is a message in the battery display screen of Power Manager indicating that "there is an error" .  I have subsequently updated Power Manager to V3.62 and the Power Manager Driver to V1.62 with no change in the condition.
It appears to me that the newer versions of Power Manager are now checking the date of the battery and preventing the battery from charging if it is older than x.  The battery was working perfectly before updating to V3.59.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?  Does anyone know how to reinstall Power Manager V3.48?
Thank you for your consideration of this problem.

    hey bigsky4,
have you tried doing a battery gauge reset? try that and see if it works.
anyway, to install V3.48 - uninstall the current version that you have and install 3.48 that is listed in this page

  • No Mains Power or Battery Chargeup, Not a Battery or Power Adaptor Fault

I have an iBook G4 12" purchased March 2006. It's been heavily used but the only problem I've had with it was last year it developed a tendency to shut down without warning. This was solved by taking the battery out and hasn't been a problem since I replaced the power lead. So otherwise no problems with the computer.
I mostly use it on the mains but a couple of times a week have it for 30 mins on battery. A few weeks ago it started to struggle charging up afterwards. A change of "routine", eg. plugging it into a different socket or adding the extension to the power adaptor, would trick it into working again. But the problem got more frequent until, a couple of weeks later, it was charging up then suddenly switched into battery mode and has been stuck there ever since.
I have changed the battery and power adaptor and this has made no difference.
A couple of odd things to note: using the old battery (5 mins a day for emergencies) it had got down to 35% then the Software Update launched and the battery suddenly dropped to 0% and went to sleep. This is when I had to buy the new battery. Also, when I pull the plug out of the mains with the barrel connector still in the computer, instead of the LED going out instantly it stays on for 10 seconds then fades out.
I've had a couple of tricks suggested that have failed: powering up through the mains with no battery in, also pressing ShiftControlOption for 5 seconds before powering up.
Please does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be wrong? Thanks.

The charge and run issues may be related to a failing DC in-board.
You may be able to get the correct part and replace it yourself, or
have a repair tech do the task for parts-plus-labor charges.
There are some DIY pages online, such as those from iFixit:
