[SOLVED] Creating an invisible-to-the-outside network with Arch

Hi All,
I want to create an internal network to share access to a larger business network and to the outside world.
Essentially, I want to create a small network that is invisible to the other machines and routers of our network, but which shares all ports.  My current thinking right now is to buy a network card for my desktop, connect it to a wifi router(specifically this one as it has enough power to reach a few rooms over), and create a wifi network with a hidden-SSID.
I will then set up port forwarding on my desktop to share my primary ethernet network with the wifi network on my other ethernet card.
I don't know very much about networking though, so I want to know if this setup will be visible to the greater network, or if it will be hidden?  Also, is that a good wifi router to get for this purpose, and does it matter which ethernet card I get?
Thanks for your help with this, I realize this a pretty disjointed question - with hardware, software, and random networking questions all mixed together.

This is actually very simple to do. The wifi router I mentioned in my previous post works well, and any old ethernet card with a chipset supported by the current kernel (most of them), will work too. Then all you do is connect the server to the 'modem' port of the router via an ethernet cable, and configure some sort of dhcp server like dhcpd or dnsmasq to give the wifi router an IP. To share the internet with it, forward your internet connection with iptables and you are good. If you want to also connect to the wifi with the server - for example because that makes file sharing easier - then you need to be a little careful with your routing table to make sure you don't try to connect to the net via the wifi connection.
Most routers support hidden SSIDs, just log in to the router and configure that directly.
Hey presto, you are done, you have a hidden wifi network that allows other machines to connect to the net through your server.

  • Expose services on XI to the outside network

    Hi,
We have a requirement that the web service hosted on xi would be invoked by another system which is outside the client's network. Although I will be using https in this case, still the client is apprehensive about opening the port of SAP XI to the outside world.
Should we use a middleware system between XI and the outside network
    OR
Expose the XI webservices over HTTPS?
    Please suggest the correct option.
    regards,
    Piyush

    Hi,
Another possibility is thru the DMZ, there you will publish a web service to receive the data and later that web service will be mapped to the PI web service.this is manage by network administrator not in pi configuration.
other possibility is ussing HTTPS or digital signature (RSA,3DES).
    Thanks

  • I cannot connect my iPhone 4S to my home wifi. When trying to connect it says I have the wrong password, but I can connect my MacBook to the same network with the same password. I have tried to restart my router, reset my network settings, fail!

Hello, I am having some major troubles connecting my iPhone 4S to my home wifi. When I try to connect on my phone, it says I have an incorrect password. That's not possible because I can connect my MacBook to the same network with the same password. I have reset my network settings on my phone, reset my router, called apple support, triple checked I was trying it in correctly, I have no clue what's going on.
The only thing different is I just moved, but I have the same router/phone/internet provider.
I've seen some discussions of router security options being the problem, I have my router connected to : WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES].
    The other options are: WEP , WPA-PSK[TKIP] , WPA2-PSK [AES] , WPA/WPA2 Enterprise.
My troubleshooting and understanding of all this is pretty limited, my applecare service did not help, please can anyone help me?
    Thanks!

If the issue happened after an update, you may want to go into an Apple Store. Be sure to let them know exactly what's wrong with the device.

  • Why can't I open some of my documents on Pages even though I created them all on the same IPad with the same Pages ap?

Why can't I open some of my documents on Pages even though I created them all on the same IPad with the same Pages ap?

I think I know the problem because I've had it myself. I didn't upgrade iWorks on my iPad, but after Apple made changes to iCloud (concurrent with Mavericks) any docs passing through it were modified and made unreadable. Even though, as you say, they were created on my iPad using the previous version of iOS Pages, which I didn't upgrade.
iCloud is the culprit, if your iPad settings had iCloud>Documents & Data enabled, the docs were modified and disabled in the cloud.
I made a further mistake. After I saw this happening, I didn't think to turn off auto updates, and Apple pushed the new version of iOS Pages onto my iPad. The result was that ALL my docs disappeared from the iPad, and from iCloud.com also. I have not been able to recover them.
I've been talking to the Pages engineering team about it. If they come up with an answer, I'll post it here. Meanwhile, get those older files backed up somewhere safe if you can.

  • There was an error joining the Airport network with WEP or WPA

I use a wireless adsl modem router (Philips). I can only connect via wireless to this router without encryption.
As soon as I use WEP or WPA encryption, I get the error message "There was an error joining the Airport network".
    Thank you for any suggestion.

  • How can I connect my mobile device on the same network with my printer

I have pictures on my mobile device but I am unable to print them on my HP Photosmart plus printer. I was wondering how am I able to make sure that my printer and my mobile device is on the same network so I can print my pictures or either be able to save them to my memory card?

    Hi,
Are you talking about iPad, iPhone ?? If YES then please check your printer on this list,(updated on 15Dec2011) it must be an AirPrint enabled printer to be able to print from iPad, iPhone. If YES (again), you can use AirPrint on your iPad to print.

  • Multiple Apple TV's on the same network with airplay issues.

I work at a school with 37 Apple TV's.  They are all on the same network, some of them are wired while others are wireless.  The problem I am having is that airplay works and then doesn't work for some unknown reason.  The Apple TV's are connected to the network and internet when they are experiencing this and I believe that the issue is bonjour. Does anyone know any way of solving this issue.

Yeah, I think wiring them is the only solution to this problem.
We've only got three (well, had one and bought two more this summer - that's when the trouble started).
The first one I got had trouble connecting with the wireless network, so Apple support said to reboot the main router. That is, shut down the entire network while we reboot for one Apple TV. So...OK, I get it, Apple is a CONSUMER company and we're trying to use their products in a school...in spite of that, so far, it has been worth the effort.
But YESTERDAY I got that message about too many devices on the network and to "disconnect a device..." (you know the rest).
So, I called Aruba, knowing that it was a wireless issue and that I've had issues with them and, particularly
Bonjour. Aruba appears to be a Windows only network - would that I would have known that three years ago. But Aruba TAC has NO CLUE what the issue is. So I called Apple Tech Support and they have NO CLUE - weren't even aware of this posting, what, six months ago? (Shows you how much they read and value the forum - we're on our own, boys and girls!)
So...I wired the front of the school Apple TV to a nearby wireless access point and now it's a steady as a rock. But prior to that I actually stood in front of the ATV and watched as it connected, then disconnected, then connected, then disconnected (ad nauseum). Interferrence? Well, maybe, there are only about 150 rogue networks detected in the immediate vicinity - but Aruba ASSURED ME that their WAPs were sophisticated enough to recongnize that and filter them out. (Maybe not?)
So the ATV at the front of the building ocassionally just drops off the network. I can tell because we run a Flickr slideshow on it all day long with announcements and stuff. When I go by the TV and see the thumbnails and no slideshow, I know it has dropped off the network. Usually I can reconnect it. But that's not good enough.
Finally, yesterday, a teacher called me who has an ATV (long story on how she got that) and said she was not longer connected to the network. A shudder ran through my body as I expected (and realized) the worst.
So, my installer is coming tomorrow to wire her ATV into the WAP in her classroom. But TODAY, I have to call Aruba and enable the additional port since it's not enabled by default.
I'll tell you, every day, I get this horrific feeling in the pit of my stomach that this whole world of technology we have built is held together with bailing wire and duct tape and that it just has to blow at some point.
Then I watch Bob Ross do his paintings (and a NEW KID on the block - watch out for him - Kevin Hill - this kid takes Bob Ross to the next level and he's only 18 years old) and think - "What the heck am I doing here, anyway? Why am I not home painting?" But them I start feeling guilty that I'm leaving the school in the lurch. Who will stand up to these bozos who don't have a clue what's going on and, further, don't seem to care, yet, get this, think they are doing a GREAT JOB! I'm telling you, I'm living on Superman's Planet Bizarro!

  • I have an airport extreme and am trying to extend the range of the wireless network with an airport express.  I set it up with the help of apple support, both lights are green on both airports, but the range didn't change.  What could be wrong?

I am trying to extend the range of my wireless network by adding an airport express to an airport extreme.  I configured it with the help of apple support, but it hasn't changed the range that I can access the internet wirelessly in my house.  What could be the problem?  Does weather affect the wireless network??

So, on the Extreme you checked the box to "allow this network to be extened" ?
    Correct?
And on the Express, you set it up to "Extend a wireless network" ?
    Correct?

➊  Primary Wi-Fi base station (this is the base station connected directly to the Internet)
    ➋  Extended base station
    Configuring a wireless extended network
To create a wireless extended network, you must place any extended Wi-Fi base stations within range of the primary Wi-Fi base station.
Start with the device that will be configured as the primary Wi-Fi base station.  Then configure your extended Wi-Fi base stations, ensuring that each is within direct range of the primary Wi-Fi base station. The physical location of extended Wi-Fi base stations will vary according to the building environment and may require some experimentation.
If you have configured your Wi-Fi base stations in the past, it may be helpful to do a factory default reset of each Wi-Fi base station that will be part of the wireless extended network before you begin.

Podcasts that I had subscribed to with my old computer are invisible in the iTunes store on my new computer. The error message says the podcast is not available in the US. Yet I could still download the podcast on my old computer before I switched. How can I fix this?

    Hello, ted_marx38.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
The most common cause for this issue would be media present that is purchased with another Apple ID.  When prompted to authorize the computer it may show a different Apple ID.  If this is the case, the computer will need to be authorized for this Apple ID.  The article below will walk you through the process of verifying if that is the case or correcting the issue if not.

  • Time Capsule and Extreme on the same network with different roles

I've just bought a new Time Capsule device which replaces my slightly older Airport Extreme Base Station. The TC is attached directly to my broadband modem via ethernet. This works fine. I want to use the old AEB as a 'print server', in other words a device I can plug printers into to enable wireless printing. This is because the printers are in a different place to the telephone line in.
With the TC running on its own, everything works fine. But as soon as I switch on the AEB, I get errors up on screen such as "IP Configuration; 91.84.115.158 in use by 00:1f:f3:3e:95:6d, DHCP Server 192.168.1.1". Alongside this error message (which occurs every 30 seconds) the internet connection frequently cuts out and comes back online by itself. Also, some computers are connecting to the AEB instead of TC for an internet connection. It's chaos!
I have tried TC in various wireless modes such as "Participate in a WDS Network". Likewise I have set the old AEB in "Bridge Mode" for internet connectivity and the WDS is set as a remote. It seems I can only have one on and not the other. I have tried using different radio channels too without much luck.
I have looked through the designing Airport Networks manual, but the illustrations have an AEB before the TC whereas my network is the other way round.
Can anyone point out where I might be going wrong or offer some design advice / good links?

I've done a hard reset of both devices and swapped them over vice-versa. The problem seems to be the network will only support a SINGLE device. In Airport Utility I can only get one of the two devices to show in the sidebar, rarely both devices are temporarily present. I've configured both to use the same network names and WPA passwords in the hope they will 'merge' together onto the same network. But one just seems to cancel out the other.
Right now I've go the old AEB plugged back into the modem and its working. But the new TC device which I've plugged into the printers wont show on the network and has the amber light flashing.

  • Error joining the Airport network with 10.4.11

I have 2 machines at home, an aluminium iMac and a very old iBook (Icebook, dual usb port running all teh same software and OS 10.4.11). A couple of days ago while using the AEBS to serve music files to iTunes and surf the net it all stopped working. One minute it was ok, then it slowed right down then I got the error message and this was all on the iMac.
The thing is I've now reinstalled (clean) the OS on the iMac, done a few hard resets of the base station and I still can't connect, yet the old laptop can get on straight away and do all the things it always has done.
I've tested the strength of the AEBS by moving the laptop about and I know the airport card is working on the iMac because I can see and connect to my neighbours BT home hub.
My main problem is connecting the iMac to the AEBS, everything else works fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what's happening or how I can get this to work again?
    many thanks.

    Saul,
Try each of these on the iMac and see if it improves connectivity to your network.
    *Reset Airport Service*
Launch System Preferences --> Network Preferences.
Highlight the Airport Service on the left.
Click the Action menu (tiny gear button) in the lower left.
    Select "Make Service Inactive".
    Then select "Make Service Active".
    Click "Apply".
    *Delete & Add Airport Service*
Launch System Preferences --> Network Preferences.
Highlight the Airport Service on the left.
Click the “-” button in the lower left to remove the Airport Service.
Next, click the “+” button and add an Airport Service.
    Click “Apply”.
Note: Removing the AirPort interface resets your preferred AirPort networks.  You will need to add preferred networks again.
    *Reset Network/Airport Settings*
    1. Go to Macintosh HD --> Library --> Preferences --> SystemConfiguration Folder
Drag the following files to the desktop:
    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
    com.apple.network.identification.plist
    NetworkInterfaces.plist
    preferences.plist
    Restart your Mac.
    Go System Preferences --> Network.
From the “Location” menu select “Edit Locations”.
Click the “+” button and name it “Home” or “My Network”.
    Click “Done”.
Highlight “Airport” on the left, and verify that your network appears beside “Network Name”.
    Click “Apply”.
    Click “Advanced…”.
Click the “Airport” tab, and add your network to the “Preferred Networks”list.
Click “OK” and then click “Apply” once more.
Now see if your connectivity issues are resolved. Later you can Trash the .plist files you dragged to the Desktop.
    *Archive & Install*
As a last resort, an Archive & Install using your Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) installation DVD will usually resolve this issue. Then use Software Update to bring your system up to date. It appears that reapplying the recent updates in this condition, does not cause the problems to return.
Let us know if any of the above suggestions helped to resolve your connectivity issues.
    Cheers!

  • Does anyone get on the 4G network with Rogers with iPhone 5?

Last week I upgraded from a Galaxy S3 to iPhone 5.   On my S3 I was always on the 4G network.  With my new iPhone 5 I can only get on the 3G network.  Does anyone know why?

  • [SOLVED]Creating a gap at the top of the screen in DWM / Dzen2

I've messed around with this for a couple days to no avail. I'd like to create a small gap at the top of the screen in dwm 6.0 (replacing dwm's topbar) so I can insert a dzen status bar. I'm pretty new to editing dwm.c, but from my google-fu have found that the answer lies somewhere in the setup() and updategeom() functions. Any other relevant information is only applicable to earlier versions of dwm.
So, can anyone help me out, or atleast point me in the right direction? I understand this might be possible through xmonad, but would like to avoid that if there's a chance.
Last edited by thecarrotstick (2013-06-27 22:57:33)

Trilby wrote:If you really want to replace dwm's bar, then you don't need to do anything - just have dzen over dwm's bar.  If you wanted to make it as efficient as possible, you could delete the function that draws the bar (or probably more easily just delete it's contents so it is an empty function).
That actually worked to some effect, I was so OCD about it being clean I didn't want to paint over the original bar, but just deleting the function that draws it doesn't seem to have removed the gap where it used to be. This solution also allows me the ability to hide it as well.
So thanks, I'm pretty happy with these results.
