I upgraded today after a relatively long time without touching the system. So quiet a lot of things went new, like Xorg and the kernel.
The mouse (touchpad) stopped moving, however, I can right/left click and it responds. I use the evdev driver and no xorg.conf and had no problem with that before. I tried xf86-...-mouse and it does not help. xorg.0.log does not report any relevant error (after grep EE xorg.0.log and grep WW xorg.0.log). No apparent problem either with hald, dbus, etc. Tapping does not work either.
It was working before I reboot, so I can exclude a hardware problem, too.

Just had this problem myself. Had two problems so I'll describe them both here.
After doing pacman -Syu to update my system X would not start, I was just left with a blank screen after boot - I use nvidia drivers so the blank screen was at the point where I would normally see the nvidia logo.
Downgrading the nvidia driver from version 185.18.31-1 to 185.18.14-1 ( pacman -U #name of older package#) solved the blank screen problem. However when I logged in I could use the mouse buttons but not move the cursor. To fix this I downgraded first the xorg-server from 1.6.3-2 to 1.6.2-1 and xf86-input-evdev from 2.2.3-1 to 2.2.2-1. Everthing is back to normal now.
If anyone needs more details let me know. Hope this helps.

  • [solved] Problems with HAL

I am having problems with HAL. I first noticed it when trying to log out of XFCE an it was asking for my password and then I would see this message when X stopped:
xfsm-shutdown-helper.c:134: Failed to contact hal: The name org.freedesktop.Hal was not provided by any .services files
Hal is listed in my daemons of rc.conf
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond hal @fam @alsa)
I am part of the power group
    [ryan ~]$ groups
disk lp wheel log locate network video audio optical storage scanner power users
I think there is something wrong with hal since it's not loading at boot and I can't start it once logged in
    [ryan ~]$ sudo /etc/rc.d/hal stop
:: Stopping Hardware Abstraction Layer [FAIL]
    [ryan ~]$ sudo /etc/rc.d/hal start
:: Starting Hardware Abstraction Layer [FAIL]
I don't know what to do. Searching for the 'xfsm-shutdown-helper' error says to look in .xsession-errors but I can't find that file. HAL should be loading at boot though and it is not so I think that is the cause of the error anyway.
This all started when I was trying to clean up goup.pacnew and gshadow.pacnew files.
    Edit: solved

Thanks but there was nothing there about hal.
My problem is solved though. hal was updated to version 0.5.11-4 and it is loading during boot and my error message on shutdown is gone.

  • [Solved]Yet Another HAL / Mounting issue....

My issue can be avoided by manually mounting a device, just to get that out there.
Whenever I transfer a larger file ( > 200mb) onto a removable USB device formated in either FAT or any non-journaled filesystem, Thunar will *pretend* like its unmounting the device but after about 20 seconds it states:
    Failed to unmount "<device name>".
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply,
the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired,
or the network connection was broken.
On top of the message, my data written is mostly corrupt.
    What I know:
** Thunar uses exo-unmount to unmount devices given a HAL uuid. Maybe this is failing? Any clue how to debug this?
** 20-storage-methods.fdi states that all vfat mounted devices have 'flush' and 'async' mount options... could this be an issue?
** I'm part of the 'storage' and 'power' groups.
    ** i start XFCE using ck-launch-session startxfce4
I've made sure that the device has no other handles and is not open in any window. My system(s) all have new and updated HAL and DBUS, as well as every other package. Running 'sync' after writing the files sometimes fixes the issue. Does anyone have a fix for why removable drives aren't "sending a reply" ? Thanks!

Alright ... well. I managed to solve this kind of. As per my last post regarding the same exact issue, I must've missed a reply from Inxsible telling me to use the FIRST suggest UDEV rule from the arch udev wiki.
The result of this is basically...
    *Device inserted
    *Mounted in /media/<device name> automatically
*(No access via Thunar sidepane since it gets mounted with `mount`)
    *No need to manually unmount
*just unplug or power off the device and it gets "lazy" unmounted via `unmount`
    Downside:
*Mounting a drive via TrueCrypt creates a directory in /media that doesn't get automatically deleted.
*Not a solution to Thunar having response issues with unmounting.
    /etc/udev/rules.d/11-media-by-label-auto-mount.rules

  • [SOLVED] Downgrading networkmanager KDE doesn't boot/no connection

    Hi
Since a recent Networkmanager update I cannot connect to my Samba shares anymore. Also, my xbmc and vlc remotes over android cannot connect either. I decided to downgrade networkmanager from 0.9.8 to 0.9.6 and as a result I lost my internet connection and KDE takes forever to boot and when it does half of the things doesn't seem to work.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Cpt.
[EDIT] turns out uninstalling networkmanager, deleting /etc/NetworkManager fixes the boot issue. Reinstalling networkmanager and everything is fixed. However, I cannot seem to downgrade (as /etc/NetworkManager doesn't get restored automatically), which means that for the time being I cannot remotely connect to my archbox.

    Uhh...
if it helps at all, here's a list of files that consist of /etc/NetworkManager/
    networkmanager /etc/NetworkManager/
    networkmanager /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf
    networkmanager /etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/
    networkmanager /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/
    I got it from running
    $ pacman -Ql networkmanager | grep /etc
In retrospect, that probably didn't help at all... have you tried just downloading the tar file for networkmanager and manually install /etc/NetworkManager/, or maybe removing the more networkmanager tar files from your /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ directory and then reinstalling networkmanager might help... I dunno.

  • [SOLVED] Downgrading Wine versions?

The game I'm trying to play keeps crashing after several minutes of play. Upon researching the problem, it seems that this is a confirmed problem with Wine version 1.1.38, which is the version currently in the AUR. Downgrading to 1.1.37 supposedly fixes the problem.
How do I do this, however? I know pacman has a downgrade feature but as I understand it only works off cached packages, and I never had 1.1.37 installed on this system so I don't think it can downgrade for me. On the AUR page I didn't see any link to old versions. Supposedly the game in question works flawlessly under 1.1.37 (it had gold and platinum appDB ratings on old versions, dropped to bronze with the latest).

Alright I see the part of PKGBUILD you're talking about. I changed the source line but how do I get the sum for it other than downloading it and calculating it myself?
Also, it says "sha256sums" and not "md5sum". I assume that I cannot calculate the md5sum and have it work there?

Ah, haven't been up to date on all the changes, it seems...
In the past I've had problems with the nvidia driver + Xorg without HAL, I think?
Anyhow, contrary to the Xorg page, I had no 20-nvidia.conf. I created that and now I'm able to startx without HAL but KDM doesn't work, the screen flickers when it attempts to start Xorg but then it crashes. Strange. Nothing in the Xorg logs either.
I'll have to see about that next, but it's nice to be able to get rid of HAL at least.

  • [SOLVED] Downgrading the Kernel

I just did a system upgrade which gave me the 2.6.32-ARCH Kernel. Problem is, the RT2860 wifi driver doesn't seem to play nicely with this kernel. I now have no network connection.
From what I can see, there doesn't seem to be a patch available for this? Which is why I want to revert back to my old kernel. I had a looksy at the ArchWiki page on downgrading packages but my problem lies with ...what packages do I need to downgrade?
Do I just 'pacman -rsn Kernel26 Kernel26-firmware Kernel26-headers' then install those three packages from my packman cache? How do I go about fixing modules and whatnot... OSS (sound system) complained about requiring the kernel header package. Do I also need to downgrade this?

There is a thread on this issue http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=86447
The driver works fine: 2.6.32 renamed the interface from ra0 to wlan0 - if you make the change in your network manager you won't need to downgrade the kernel.

  • [SOLVED] Downgrading python / installing a previous version

    Hi!
I need to install Python 2.6 (I have the package, from my other arch box), it's the newest version which works with Google App Engine SDK. The problem is, that there already exists package python2 2.7 (which is required by openoffice,  dbus-python and other cruical programs down the dependency chain) and it conflicts with the python package.
Is it possible to install Python 2.6 (i only need it for Google App Engine) without losing all the apps that depend on Python 2.7?

No...  just install python-2.6 alongside your current python package.  There is a PKGBUILD in the AUR: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=41809  (read the comments).

  • Hal 0.5.14-1 does not mount some usb drives correctly

    Hi folks
When I try to mount a USB hard disk (with KDE 4.3.4), it tries to mount it at some wrong path used by another USB hard disk.  Or I have to mount it as root, or even as root it still doesn't work right... pfff I'm really disappointed by this showstopper...
For example, I own a LaCie hard disk (/media/disk), a Iomega one (/media/IOMEGA) and a LaCie mobile disk (no power cable, /media/MobileDisk):
    - When I try to mount the Iomega one, it works fine, as normal user;
    - When I try to mount the LaCie one, it fails, independently of the fact that the Iomega drive is mounted or not, with the following message:
Unable to run the command specified. The file or folder file:///media/IOMEGA does not exist.
Looks like it wants to mount the LaCie one where the Iomega one is/should be mounted...
    - When I connect the LaCie hard disk, the directory /media/MobileDisk
    is created, instead of /media/disk
, and when as root I try to manually mount the hard disk, it says:
ntfs-3g: Failed to access volume '/dev/sdb1': No such file or directory
Maybe there's some erroneous entry in some cache or data used by hal/dbus?  I don't know how they work and how to activate their logging systems and then where to find the logs...
Maybe there's a way to simply completely wipe out hal/dbus/consolekit/policykit/... configuration data without having to reinstall the complete system?
    I have:
      hal 0.5.14-1
      dbus-core 1.2.16-1
      dbus 1.2.16-1
      dbus-glib 0.82-2
      dbus-python 0.83.0-2
I start KDM using /etc/inittab, as described in the wiki.  I've put "/usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon" in /etc/rc.local and have modified /etc/inittab so that it starts kdm with: "x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/ck-launch-session /usr/bin/kdm -nodaemon"!
Is this the right setup, equivalent to the one with xinitrc?
The same setup works fine on my laptop.
I've got the impression that hal/dbus/... confounds my drives and does not know where to mount them...
Downgrading to hal 0.5.13-idontrememberwhatcifer does not solve the issue, the system is kept up to date with "pacman -Syu" about once a day and it still doesn't work...
    Some clue?
    Thanks and happy new year

OK something happened that I can't explain...
I just controlled about all files related to hal/dbus/mounting etc and, I don't know why, all devices I've mounted had a corresponding line in fstab... really weird.
I juste deleted those lines, and, well, mounting seems to work again
    So this issue is solved
And finally Arch Linux is again my favorite distro

  • KDE, HAL, cannot open the non-latin mount point

I just installed ArchLinux for a few days and there is a problem here: I use KDE and hal, USB disk and CDROM can be auto-mounted. But if the USB Disk lable or CDROM label is non-latin characters, KDE, actually, Konqueror cannot open that mount point.
I think my charset is correct because in konqueror, the directory name of the mount point is correct. When I try to open this directory, konqueror complained that she cannot open that directory and the directory name which the error message dialog shows is wrong.
    Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

    Hi
two commom things which can cause crashes are bad or out of spec RAM and excessive heat generated by powerful graphics cards such as the Radeon 9800. If it's just started happening since you added the RAM, that seems the most likely culprit. Have you tried removing the DIMMs to see whether the problem goes away? You could try each of the two individually to see whether it's just a bad DIMM or a more general problem with that particular RAM.

Maybe you are looking for
