[SOLVED] Increase volume in a linear instead of logarithmic way

I am using i3. I have some keybindings which are executing "amixer set Master
5%+". Unfortunately, if I am regarding alsamixer meanwhile, the volume is
increasing logarithmically. Hence I have a higher resolution on the lower volume
area than on the higher.
Is there a way to increase it linearly?

Manuel

You can use "amixer set Master 5%+ -M":
-M Use the mapped volume for evaluating the percentage rep‐
resentation like alsamixer, to be more natural for human
ear.
- edit: Yeah, that's exactly what has been posted in the thread linked above.

    Hi,
One thing can may help a little is the following.  Right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select 'Playback Devices'.  Left click the default device once to highlight it ( it's usually 'speakers & headphones' ) then click the Properties button.  Click the Enhancements tab and put a tick in the box next to 'Loudness Equalization'.  Click Apply to save the change and then click OK in all remaining windows and see if this has helped at all.

  • I cannot increase volume on Voice Memo

Does anyone know how to increase volume on Voice Memo?
I almost do not hear my messages (unless I shout or put my phone in front of my lips and talk loud).

Just got a 3GS today and this volume problem was one of the first things I noticed. This has to be fixed - teling people they have to use a headset mic or somesuch, when the speakerphone usage of the built-in mic works just fine, is a cop-out. Obviously an oversight ("bug") in the code. Now if someone could just figure out what the file type of the voice memos is, one could take the files of 3rd party apps that do record at a proper volume and make iTunes recognize them as voice memos. If Apple's going to release something they consider a core iPhone app in this shoddy condition, it's only fair if we get some sort of functional workaround rather than wait for someone's bugfix inbox queue in Cupertino to get caught up on.

  • [Solved] i3status Volume Display is Incorrect

My i3bar should be showing me the volume of Master, but instead it shows me some other value. It decreases when the volume decreases, but not by the same amount, and it reads about 30% when the audio is too quiet to hear. Also, you can see the commands bound to my multimedia keys on the left. The volume up/down keys should alter the volume by 5%, but instead alter it by what alsamixer calls 3.75dB and i3status sees as ~5.5%. So, uh... what can I do?
edit: It's probably worth mentioning that this all worked exactly as intended not long ago. I don't know what might have messed it up, though.
    edit2: Oops. Thumbnailed.

Looks like you're right. amixer and i3status agree on the percentage, while alsamixer has its own way. With "amixer -M", it gets and sets its values the same way alsamixer does, although the 5% increment is still inexact, so I dealt with that using my own script.
But i3status seems to be getting its numbers the same way as amixer, so I guess I might have to look into conky for that.
edit: One of these wrappers is also an option. I'm now using the .py wrapper to get a more useful and accurate volume level in i3bar.

  • Can't increase volume from nano to beats ?

IiPod 7th gen to beats Bluetooth . Can't increase volume?

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iRepo Mac and Windows
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • When I pan left, the volume is turned down instead of being panned left???

When I pan left, the volume is turned down instead of being panned left???
The instrument strip and output 1-2 are both in stereo in my environment. I don't get it-any ideas anyone?
    I'm using logic 7.2.3
    Thanx in advance
    !

    Thanks for your response.
hrmmm..... I don't see any "Pan Law". I'm running Logic 7.2.3 btw.
I think it might be my audio drivers.
"I have a FW 410 interface, everything seems to work fine except for the panning. Instead of panning properly, the volume is turned down when I pan left and volume is raised when I pan right. This only happens when I have the FW 410 interface selected in the audio/hardware setup. Panning under the built-in audio works fine so I would imagine it's the M-Audio drivers for the FW 410 that need a working update for Leopard."
    Can anyone confirm this?
    Thanx again in advance,

  • Volume gain fluctuation problem in iPad(random decreasing/increasing volume) with audio monitoring enabled.

I have one bass track and a drums track picked from loops and when playing the guitar(iPad2 with apogee jam connected) with monitoring enabled I get gain fluctuation problems(random decreasing/increasing volume, some times mute). When I stop playing the guitar audio feedback gets back to normal.
    Any idea?

    Hi George Ward2
I'm wondering if you accidentally or unintentionally locked the audio in a segment/s where you intended to fade up or down. Altho you say it plays fine when you review it in iMovie. The place to review it is in iDVD. However adjustments are made in iMovie for the actual audio and video. Here's what I found in the Help Menu for iMovie since there isn't much info on the iDVD portion of the help menu for the same symptoms:
Making your movie louder or softer:
If you find that all or part of your movie is too loud or too soft, you can adjust the volume of your movie in the timeline viewer. You can increase or decrease the volume of the entire movie or just specific audio clips. For example, at a certain point in a video you might dramatically increase or decrease the volume of accompanying music.
IMPORTANT: These instructions are for setting the volume of video that people will hear as they play your movie. If you only want to adjust the volume of your computer's speakers, see "Adjusting the volume of your computer in iMovie HD" below.
To make your movie louder or softer:
Click the Timeline Viewer button (shown above).
Select the clip or clips whose volume you want to change in the timeline viewer.
Tip: To learn how to select multiple clips, see "Selecting clips" below.
Click the clip volume button (shown below), and then drag the slider to adjust the volume.
Tip: You can also type a new percentage in the field next to the clip volume button to adjust volume.
You can also make finer audio adjustments within a clip. For more information, see "Fading audio up or down."
Just out of curiosity .... is the source audio 12 bit or 16 bit?
Hope this is helpful and good luck.

My dvd player will not let me change regions, it says i have one more chance to change it, then it just quits when i do, now its stuck on region 1. Any thoughts how i can solve this problem or get round it in some way?

Usually if you have some kind of hardware failure there is some beeping during POST or most motherboards now have LED indicators to produce and error message based on the type of failure
So if its bad memory, not place properly, mismatched, processor not inserted properly, mismatched voltage or voltage connector not present etc it beeps or generates the error id.
Power supplies can be tested for failure. There are some walk throughs for testing just them with a switch, paperclip or a jumper (I'd suggest not doing this if you are not familiar with the dangers of electricity).
Memory can be tested with memory diagnostics programs like Memtest+
Processors can overheat if the proper precautions have not been taken usually you will get a POST beep or error code for that.
If the motherboard has no response then do the basics first:
Check power connectors and power supply. Once you determine that is not the case move on to other items like graphics cards in all the way or memory.

  • Increase volume of rented iTunes movies?

I have difficulty with the volume level being too low on rented iTunes movies.  I have tried the following setups with my first generation iPad:
    1) Apple HDMI adapter -> HDMI cable to Mitsubishi EW230U-ST projector; Creative T-40 speakers plugged into mini-stereo jack of projector; volume turned to max on all devices.  This produces speaker volume that is not adequate for a large room.
    2) Same as #1, but instead run the Creative speakers directly from the headphone jack of the iPad.  Volume similarly inadequate.
    3) Same as #1 or #2, but insert FiiO E5 Headphone Amplifier into mini-stereo chain going to Creative T-40 speakers.  This produces adequate volume, though to my ears, the quality is diminished somewhat.  I'm not fond on this approach, because the FiiO uses a built-in battery which might fail without warning during the showing of a movie.
What would be ideal would be a way to increase the volume going out the headphone jack of the iPad.  I understand that this is deliberately limited to protect the hearing of those using headphones.  Alternatively, increasing the volume going over HDMI would likely help - unless the projector's mini-stereo jack is similarly being limited for headphone reasons (less likely, since projectors are usually hooked to external speakers).
So ... is there any way to make the iPad output louder sound with rented movies?  Jail-breaking solutions are probably not appropriate, as I don't want to risk my ATT unlimited data plan.
I should say that if I just play a DVD instead of using the iPad, the sound level from the DVD player's stereo jack is strong enough for the Creative T-40 speakers to rock the room.
If I could solve this problem, I would rent a lot more iTunes movies, as it is the easiest way to get a movie.

I followed your procedure and did some testing.  By setting the volume slider to +100%, the movie was louder on my Mac.
I then transferred the movie to my iPad and took my equipment to the facility where I play movies. I didn't have a pristine rental copy to test against, so I used my own DVD copy of the movie.  This is what I found:
    A) The best and strongest sound was when the the T40 speakers were directly connected to the DVD player's RCA sound jacks and the video was coming thru the hdmi to the projector.
    B) The worst (quietest) sound was when the speakers took their input from the mini-stereo jack of the projector, with the video and sound coming from the dvd player thru hdmi.
    C) I compared this with the +100% sound-increased movie rental running on my iPad, with hdmi connection to the projector and sound coming from the mini-stereo jack of the projector to the T40 speakers.  This was definitely much louder than "B" above.  So I can safely say that the sound boost performed on the rental movie on my Mac did copy over to the iPad.
    D) Unfortunately, even "C" above is not loud enough for this room.  But if I added the FiiO amp to "C", then there was plenty of sound - though not as pleasant (or simple) as "A" above.
I wonder if there is some way to get more than the +100% sound boost in iTunes?
I think it is unfortunate that renting a digital movie is fraught with such difficulty. It should be possible to adjust the sound as needed - and preferably on the iPad!  Otherwise, we are just going to keep renting DVDs.

  • Iphone 5 automatically increases volume

With my Iphone 5 I frequently experience the following when using it with headphones plugged in:
When hearing music with my original apple earpods (I have tried another pair of third party headphones experiencing the same) the volume suddenly increases to max. When trying to lower the volume I cannot as it automatically increases again. So it feels like the + volume button is held it although this is not the case. No cover is on the Iphone so thats not the reason. It does not solve anything to deattach the headphones. Only a reboot helps and I have then same problem after a few minutes. Never had issues without headphones plugged in. The headphone jack does not seem to be ok.
    Please help.

You may have a problem with the button. Make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar and try to recreate the problem for them there.

  • Utility for Increasing Volume

I'm not sure if this feature is something available in iTunes or not, perhaps as a utility, but I have a batch of mp3 files where the sound is audible, but it comes through sounding more like a whisper. I know you can look under the Info for a sound file under the "options" tab to make volume adjustments. I need a bit larger of an volume increase though. Audacity is a sound editing program that can do what I'm looking for, but when I export that WAV back out as an mp3, the size has gone from (e.g.) 5mb to 50mb. Suggestions?

This may be answering my own question, but others may find it useful. I took the original mp3 with the bad audio, imported it into Audacity, increased the audio levels there, exported that as a WAV (instead of exporting directly as an mp3), then taking that WAV in iTunes and exporting THAT as an mp3. Long story short, the converter in iTunes is a lot better and cuts back significantly on file size. This may not be the best way, but it's working for me!

  • Increasing Volume

I tried increasing the volume by double-clicking on the audio layer and dragging the level up. However, I really can not tell any difference. Is this a way of doing it?

One of the posts above suggested that you use the Gain filter, this will solve all of your volume increasing problems.
Where is it? Click on the Effects tab in your browser, then scroll down to a folder labeled "Audio Filters", then select the folder labeled "Final Cut Pro". The Gain filter is in there. Drag that filter to your clip in your timeline, then double click the clip to load it in the viewer, then click the "Filters" tab in the viewer to modify the Gain settings.

  • Is there a way of lowering/increasing volume on voice and music

Is there a way in iMovie 8 to lower/increase voice and or music, like on iMovie HD you could when you were seeing the audio tracks?

So now what happens if the audio controls never pop up?
When I click on the audio button I don't get an "audio adjustment window".
Is there another way to bring it up?
    According to apple support:
    To normalize clip volumes:
Select a clip you want to normalize and then click the Audio Adjustments button to open the Audio Adjustments window.
In the Audio Adjustments window, click Normalize Clip Volume.
Select the next clip in your project that you want to normalize, and then click Normalize Clip Volume again.
Repeat step 3 for each project clip that you want to normalize.
    When you’re finished, click Done.

  • How do I increase volume significantly

I have video I recorded on VHS tape from tv, transferred it to DVD, and onto my iMac, into iMovie. I want to upload these to YouTube, but the volume is very low. I know how to double the volume, but would like to still make it much higher. I suppose I could double it within Inspector, duplicate the project, and go through the same process to double it again (assuming that works), but is there an easier way?

    Another thing to try:
    Use Share/Export Using QuickTime.
Select an audio only codec such as MP3 or AAC.
Open the resulting file in GarageBand. You can increase the volume, but you will also be amplifying the noise, so maybe GB can help with this.
    Export from GB to iTunes..
You can then drag the audio track back into your project from the music browser.
