[Solved] No Route to Host but Internet is fine

Hi, Im trying to install tcpdump and getting this error;
bash-3.2# pacman -S tcpdump

looking for inter-conflicts...
Targets (1): tcpdump-3.9.8-1

bash-3.2#
So thinking the host might be down, I pinged it
[jamie@myhost ~]$ ping -c 3 mirrors.uk2.net

Looks fine, so I tried another mirror

bash-3.2#
Again no good, and again ping works fine
bash-3.2# ping -c 3 www.mirrorservice.org

Any ideas?
Edit: So its fixed now, for some reason /etc/resolv.conf was pointing to my router dns server, which barely works, after setting it back to my local one its working.

It might help you figure out what's different when
you connect with telnet vs. when you connect
with a Java program. That difference might give
you a clue as to what you need to do differently
in your program to make it work.
Perhaps it insists that the source port number
is in the "privileged" range?

This only occurs under 10.5. In 10.4.11, I can hit the server on both ports through telnet.

How come it can figure out the route when using port 80, but not when using port 510? And is the inability to figure out the route the reason why Wireshark shows ZERO outgoing packets on port 510 when it fails to connect?
And why only on certain IPs? If I use "edu.yorku.ca", I can connect via telnet on both 80 and 510.

So it works if you supply a FQDN but not an IP? Are you certain that the IP you're using is valid? There may be some DNS trickery going on behind the scenes.
No, it only connects when I hit the server on port 80. Using IP or FQDN doesn't seem to make a difference.
If I try to use Network Utils to do a trace route, it too says no route to host.
I've got a G4/ppc running 10.4.11 attached to the same router, and it has no issue hitting the server on any port, and can do a trace route as well.

  • WRT45GC - Not connecting to NTL Broadband, but internet works fine minus the router

I seem to have a problem try to get my WRT45GC to work as an accesspoint for my NTL connection.  If the modem is plugged directly into my PC via ethernet cable, internet works fine.  But if I plug my WRT45GC into the modem then have a direct connection to my pc from the router, i only get limited or no connectivity.
Also once this has been set up my laptop can pick up the wireless network but once again no internet.
I have been told different things by different people ie, the modem and router may have the same IP address, the router may not have DCHP enabled ( I dont have the IP address to log onto the router) please can someone help
If i unplug the router and have the modem connecting directly to the pc, internet works fine again.

if u have a cable connection....follow the steps below
    1) connect the computer to one of the LAN ports on the router...and connect the modem to the router's internet port.
    2) check the ip add on the computer . to check the ip add go to start -> run -> cmd -> ipconfig...ensure that u have an ip add of 192.168.1.x and default gateway 192.168.1.1
    2) access the router using http://192.168.1.1 . Keep the username blank and the default password is "admin".
    3) go to the "mac add clone" subtab , enable it and click clone your pc's mac..save the settings....do a power cycle
    4) go to the "wireless" tab , change the ssid , channel - 1 or 11.
If this does not work for u , revert back with the details - ISP name , cable / DSL , internet ip add off of the status page on the router....

    Few notes:
I have added some lines excluding NAT in a few different ways, but does not resolve.
I have switched the RAP rool from 10.96.20.x to 172.21.20.x and can then connect to the local host. Appears to be a routing issue to the 10.x network, but I can't seem to find the solution.

  • Browsers not working but internet is fine

I've been having a weird issue for a few days, my computer is connected to the internet and I am able to login a messenger and use spotify and other programs that run through wifi but for some reason none of my internet browsers open any page. If anyone knows how to fix this please help!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Not connecting to Music Store or Software Updates (but Internet works fine)

About a month ago, I moved in to a new apartment and set up a new cable internet connection. After a very frustrating installation process (Netgear is not very Mac-friendly), the Internet worked. A couple days later, I realized I couldn't get onto the iTunes Music Store. It just tries for a while and then says it can't reach it and for me to check my Network Diagnostics.
I tried to get to the music store when I was at work on an Ethernet connection (as opposed to my usual wireless), but that didn't work either. I also realized today that my Software Updates aren't working, because they cannot connect either. It just tells me to click on Network Diagnostics, which I always do to no avail.
Also tonight, I realized I only have 4.5 GB space left on my computer. This computer is less than a year old, and I don't see how this is possible. I deleted a lot of things, and that didn't make any difference. Could I possibly have a virus? I thought Macs didn't even get viruses!? What should I do?

I got this message from you, but I still have the same problem of not being able to connect to the iTunes store, software updates, Safari, CDDB, Help, Southwest's Ding, my weather widget, and several other things. I found a post you did in July where you helped someone else who it sounded like had the same problems that I am having. However, I tried your approaches to that -- isolating the problem (it affects all accounts on this computer), typing in that number (17.254.3.183) in Safari (says the server stopped responding), and now I really hope I don't have to back up everything and start over. I think this started when I moved to this apartment and set up a new Comcast cable internet account. I have been able to live with it because I have a computer at work and spend most of my time there anyway, but at times when I want to burn CDs, it really drives me crazy. Do you recommend taking it to the Apple store or would you be able to help me? Thanks.

  • Airport Extreme Blinking Amber But Internet Working Fine Multiple Status Messages

I have Airport Extreme 5.6.1.   It started blinking amber showing Airport did not have a valid Internet Address.   I was concerned about with changing anything if I could still connet.   Checked a forum and it suggested to go to sheck status and see the problem.   I did and now I have a new mesage.  No DNS server address.   I am hesitant about doing anything because if I do and lose internet connection I am really up a creek without a paddle.

Just to update.   I unplugged my modem for a short time.   When it powered up the light was green on my Airport Extreme.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot resume from suspend but hibernate works fine

Please help me figuring out what can be the issues..
I cannot resume from suspend while "sudo pm-hibernate" works fine..
When I use "sudo pm-suspend", the system (samsung N210 netbook) goes to sleep and I can see the power light blinking as expected. But, when I try to resume the system from suspend by pressing the power button, the screen remains black with no HDD activity. Only thing I can see is the power LED on.
After I do "sudo pm-suspend" and try to resume from suspend but fails. So, I do a HARD reboot and then this is the content of  /var/log/pm-suspend.log

Thu Dec 16 12:00:31 IST 2010: performing suspend
Since, the last time I checked about suspend was 1.5 months back, I cant really make out as to what package caused the issue as I had a few upgrades since that time.
I am no expert but it seems like it is the log of suspending the system, it seems like the system didnt even go to initial stage of resuming.

Well this is a long shot... But my laptop had some issues with suspending due to low-power governors preventing it from fully working at times.
Because of that I manually suspend with the following script:
    #!/bin/bash
    clear
    cpufreq-set -g performance
    cpufreq-info
    echo "Continue? y/n? ";read bevestiging
    if [ $bevestiging = "y" ]
    then
echo "System going down for suspension NOW!"
    pm-suspend
    else
    echo "Exiting..."
    exit 0
    fi
    exit 0
All it really does in the end, is change the governer from which it's currently on to "performance", thus allowing maximum clock speed.
I've also added in a little confirmation dialog to check whether it's properly switched.
Of course, this will only work for you if you're also using laptop-mode and cpufrequtils.
Edit: You need to run this script with sudo or as the root user.

  • My site doesn't work when I upload to my own web host, but it's fine in Preview or BC. Why?

I have uploaded my site via FTP to my own web hosting and my site is broken. My menus and slideshows don't work, my styles are all missing... everything is shifted to the left. What has happened and how can I fix it?

lanistudio, while the symptom of your change may appear to be correct behavior, I believe your fix is incorrect.
The original code is correct. The way slideshows work is that the original image source is to a very small animated gif that provides the preloader graphic until the actual image is loaded. All the images in a slideshow that are not visible when the page is first loaded are loaded by JavaScript running in the background. That JavaScript copies the "data-src" attribute into the "src" attribute once the image data is available. In this way a page with a slideshow load much more quickly in the browser.
If images in a slideshow where failing to load for you, I suspect the Adobe Tech's feedback was accurate and one or more of your .js files is missing, in the incorrect location or in a folder with incorrect permissions. If you provide the URL for your site after doing a clean upload from Muse (to get rid of any post export hand editing of the code) we can diagnose the root cause of the problem.
If you've ever used a method other than Muse's File > Upload to FTP Host... to upload, delete, rename, move or otherwise alter what's on your hosting, then you need to turn on the "Upload: All Files" option within the Upload to FTP Host... feature in order for Muse to be able to upload everything so it has an accurate understanding of what needs to be updated during subsequent uploads with the "Upload: Only Modified Files" option set.
If you alter what's on your hosting using an FTP program and then upload from Muse with the Upload: Only Modified Files option set you're likely to end up with a mis-matched or incomplete set of files on your server.

What's strange is that Tp smapi's functionality seems to be there anyway... It's a module for battery control in Thinkpads and my battery indeed doesn't charge beyond 80%, the way I want it to be.
I'm having the same issue. I think you will find that the "functionality" isn't provided, as you said, /sys/devices/platform/smapi doesn't exist, and that your battery is actually remembering the last charge limits you sent to it. Try to remove the battery and put it back, I'm nearly sure that it'll lose them. This is what happens to me on my second battery, the ultra-bay one, which I occasionally have to remove to insert my CD drive.
No idea why tp_smapi doesn't load when put in MODULES in rc.conf, but workarounds should be easy. Alternatively, if you only use it to update your charge settings, you can just manually load it each time you need to.
    EDIT :
Have just found out that by manually adding thinkpad_ec before tp_smapi in MODULES in rc.conf, everything loads. Strange, since thinkpad_ec should be loaded automatically with tp_smapi. But hey, it works.

    1) vuze -> preferences -> incoming tcp listen port (example 50123)
    2) set the same port on UDP
after that you have to open tcp protocol (NAT -> virtual server) ... on your router and set start port as the same port as you already set in vuze (ex. 50123)... and an end port (ex. 50124)
be careful as local ip address, you have to set the same ip in the tcp protocol settings with the ip that your macbook uses to connect to the internet. you can find the ip on system preferences --> web--> and get the information.
I hope to help you and others with the same problem!

    Hello Rattisate,
Sorry to hear you are not able to connect to Wi-Fi on your MacBook Pro.  I would be concerned about this too.  You can find information on how to troubleshoot this in the following article:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4628
Follow the steps in the section labeled, "Symptom: My Mac does not connect to the Internet."
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
