[SOLVED]Planning to Switch - Broadcom "?"

I'm planning on switching from Ubuntu to Arch and am wondering what experiences have been like when dealing with Broadcom wireless cards.  In my experience they've been rather a pain to deal with and I just want to find out whether anyone can tell me about their experience getting their cards working under Arch.

Thanks for letting me know what questions I need to be asking.  Since I started using linux, wireless drivers have been my kryptonite!
Looks like b43 is definitely installed.  My chipset is: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g
Here's the relevant info from my "ls -R"
/lib/firmware/b43:
a0g0bsinitvals4.fw a0g1initvals13.fw b0g0initvals4.fw ucode11.fw
a0g0bsinitvals5.fw a0g1initvals5.fw b0g0initvals5.fw ucode13.fw
a0g0initvals4.fw b0g0bsinitvals13.fw lp0bsinitvals13.fw ucode4.fw
a0g0initvals5.fw b0g0bsinitvals4.fw lp0initvals13.fw ucode5.fw
a0g1bsinitvals13.fw b0g0bsinitvals5.fw pcm4.fw
a0g1bsinitvals5.fw b0g0initvals13.fw pcm5.fw
As far as I can tell the module is loading, unless that zero means that it isn't.  It should be.  I have it listed in the modules section of my rc.conf and have bcm43xx blacklisted:
$ lsmod | grep 'b43\|bcm\ndis'
b43 110752 0
ssb 30340 1 b43
rfkill 5904 3 rfkill_input,b43
pcmcia 33324 2 b43,ssb
mac80211 117644 1 b43
input_polldev 3720 1 b43
pcmcia_core 33304 4 yenta_socket,rsrc_nonstatic,b43,pcmcia
And here is my dmesg result, which seems to say that my wireless card isn't working.  Not exactly the 6:00 news:
$ dmesg | grep -C4 'b43\|bcm\|ndis\|wlan0'

    I want to switch phones on my plan without switching my plan itself

    Much will depend on the phone you have NOW and the phone you want to switch to "without changing your plan" - if you are wanting to switch to a smartphone from a basic or multi-media phone (a classification no longer available) you will need to add a tiered data plan.

    I bought a 4G SIM activation kit on the advice of a CS rep, who said I could change out the SIM card on my Verizon Droid X (currently in use with a customer loyalty plan) and switch it to a prepaid plan. But now it appears there is no SIM card to switch out. Google search finds several others have asked that question and the Droid X doesn't have a SIM card, apparently. But, the 4G SIM activation kit "Compatibility" tab claims that it is compatible with the Droid X, so what is the real story here? Do I have to send this kit back to you?

    No. Call Apple Care and give them the serial number. They may be able to tell you who it is locked to.

  • Does OS Lion handle Duplicates effectively? I want a review as am planning to switch to lion

    Does OS Lion handle Duplicates effectively? I want a review as am planning to switch to lion

    I currently use an iPhone, an iPad, and a Mac computer for business.  The three devices have Contacts Managers that sync with each other through both Google and through Mobile Me.  Currently, this has created a mess of duplicate contacts.  Please advise me on the steps necessary for removing these duplicates and establishing a syncing solution that doesn't regenerate the duplicates.  There are several applications available that remove duplicates, but I am not sure which ones work or don't work.  I want information on this, but most importantly I want to understand how to fix this problem permanently.  Also, I read somewhere that Mac's new operating system, Lion, can help deal with duplicates.  I don't have Lion, but I would be willing to get it, if this would fix the problem.

  • [SOLVED] Wireless Connection Problems - Broadcom Corporation BCM4318

    Attempting to troubleshoot wifi connectivity issues on a fresh install on an old dell Inspiron 2200. This laptop uses the Broadcom b43 driver:
    http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43
    I read that page top to bottom, installed b43-fwcutter firmware extraction tool, installed the b43 driver. lsmod confirms b43 is installed. lspci shows the drivers are installed, but I can't get the interface to show with ip link or ip addr.
    lspci -vnn | grep 14e4:
    02:03.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4318] (rev 02)
    I'm confused by dmesg below because it first tells me that "b43-phy0: Broadcom 4318 WLAN found" then a few lines down says driver not found.

    Got it running, was missing "b43-firmware" from the AUR, which is different than b43-fwcutter. Instructions kind of unclear there, but hey it's running.

  • [SOLVED kinda]Yet another Broadcom wireless problem - scanning

    Use an old Gateway laptop with a wireless card to provide internet through NAT to my desktop computer that isn't nearby my switch.  I was doing this for the longest time using WinXP on the Gateway, but since all my other computers are now running linux, I figured, hey, why not put a really sleek and sexy copy of Arch onto the Gateway, and free up some of that HD space for easier file sharing between the desktop and the rest of the network.  So I installed Arch, and have run head first into how much Arch and Broadcom wireless devices do not play well together.  Have spent all my time since then searching the forums, the wiki, etc, but to no avail.  So going to just go ahead and finally make my own call for help via the forums here.
    I've only ever ONCE seen a scan find a wireless network, and that was after my first reboot after installing arch.  That was the only time. There are at all times 2-4 wireless networks in range of this computer.  I'm currently on my netbook running Ubuntu to post this (typing everything in by hand, ugh), and can see 4 networks right now.  The Arch laptop can't find any.
    To start off with:  I have read the wikis.  I have searched the forums.  I HAVE INSTALLED THE FIRMWARE.  I've checked to make sure my card is supported, and the driver it uses is the b43, and is not supposed to be compatible with the wl driver.  This is the cardbus Linksys WPC54G v1 card.  I know the card itself works.
    Here's the various data I'm sure will be requested of me at one point or another.  This is all taken immediately after booting.
    What can I try.  I've probably already tried it, but I'm willing to walk through step by step with someone if they think they can help.

    How about any need to blacklist when you need b43. Anything suspicious around in lsmod?
    with b43, you can see me previous lsmod on the original post.
    with b43legacy, the only related things I see from lsmod are b43legacy, mac80211, cfg80211, and ssb.
    Wait.  Hmmm....
    rmmod b43
    modprobe b43legacy
    rmmod b43legacy
    modprobe b43
    lsmod |grep b43
    Now bcma is showing up.  But it didn't before.  It just started showing up with b43 since I did the compat-wireless package.  But seeing as I'm getting scans SOMETIMES now, I hesitate to call it a problem.  Maybe?
    Any other ideas?
    It can scan ONCE.  The b43 driver is obviously functional at least for a bit.
    Standard network service, wicd, netcfg, etc, I've tried them all.  Reinstalled from scratch twice.  Looking for NEW ideas basically.  I've read just about every single post about every broadcom chipset out there.  I just happen to have one of these rare ones apparently.

  • [SOLVED] SLiM env switching doesn't work

    Hello,
    so today I wanted to try a different desktop environment, I already had set everything up a while ago in the slim.conf and xinitrc but the F1 doesn't do anything and it always starts a xfce session.
    The thing is though, that back then when I actually changed the 2 configs the switching worked fine and according to the SLiM article on the arch wiki nothing has changed in the way how you configure this.
    So is this a bug in recent version or did the config file format change or the files you need to modify?
    thanks in advance!
    Last edited by pfannkuchen_gesicht (2014-01-04 00:08:52)

    there is nothing listed at all and when pressing F1 nothing happens either, when in the past the selected DEs name showed up on screen.
    my .xinitrc looks exactly like the example on the SLiM archwiki page, just without the entries of the other DEs I don't have installed. I am also pretty sure it's not even an issue of the xinitrc since SLiM doesn't even display any DEs, it just starts xfce after entering the password.
    EDIT: hm, I think the "sessiondir" setting was just missing, readded that and now it works. Odd though that it wasn't there anymore.

  • [Solved] bluetooth hardware switch - Thinkpad T400

    Hello,
    I've got a Thinkpad T400 with integrated bluetooth, but I don't really use bluetooth, so I want to disable it to save battery power.
    I figured out, how to disable it via laptop-mode-tools on startup, but when I use the hardware switch for Wlan and bluetooth to turn my Wlan on and off again bluetooth starts up again.
    I also figured out that I can disable bluetooth via "echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/bluetooth_enable".
    I want to put that command in a script, that is only executed, when the bluetooth hardware is detected.
    Now I'm wondering if any of you guys knows some script, like that.
    I've already had a look at the udev files, but I couldn't figure out which one will do the job.
    Maybe it's the wrong way and there is a lot easier solution.
    Thanks in advance, any help would be appreciated,
    David

    I do this for disabling Bluetooth on my X220 ThinkPad using Fn + F9.
    I created the file /etc/acpi/actions/bluetooth.sh
    #!/bin/bash
    BT_RFKILL=$(rfkill list | grep tpacpi_bluetooth_sw | sed 's/\([0-9]\+\):.*/\1/')
    BT_STATE=$(/usr/sbin/rfkill list $BT_RFKILL | grep "Soft blocked: yes")
    if [ "x" == "x$BT_STATE" ]; then
    /usr/sbin/rfkill block $BT_RFKILL
    else
    /usr/sbin/rfkill unblock $BT_RFKILL
    fi
    exit 0
    And the file /etc/acpi/events/bluetoothconf
    event=button/f24.*
    action=/etc/acpi/actions/bluetooth.sh
    Restart acpid.
    # systemctl restart acpid.service
    Now I press Fn + F9 to toggle bluetooth off and on.
    Rfkill needs to be installed for this to work.

  • [Solved] Wireless Conection Problems - Broadcom BCM4312

    Hello
    I recently installed Arch Linux on my laptop,
    however the only wireless driver that I know of that works is the proprietary one from broadcom here:
    http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php
    I patched it with the patch found (it refused to compile beforehand):
    332c332
    <     .ndo_set_multicast_list = wl_set_multicast_list,
    >     .ndo_set_rx_mode = wl_set_multicast_list,
    However after installing Networkmanager it refuses to connect to a network when I click on one available in nm-applet; even after typing in my password to give it authorisation, not even a box comes up so I can enter the wep key. I then tried pressing on nm-applet and clicking "Create New Wireless Network" and selecting WPA & WPA2 for my wireless security and typing in my ssid and trying to connect. This time it got further along as it began trying to establish a connection with the network however no luck! I then tried the same thing except on a network with no security and obviously no network security selected and it Worked! It also allowed me to connect to networks with no security by clicking on the network from the available list rather than creating a new connection manually..
    However it is obviously going to be a detrament to me If I can't connect to Wireless networks that have security on them! All in all It simply refuses to work with my home network (I havn't tried other security other then WPA&WPA2) and only open security networks..
    Can Someone please help me to get this working ?
    Thanks
    DoctorZeus

    Gusar wrote:Nope, the proprietary driver is not the only one that works. b43 works too. Just install the b43-firmware package from AUR.
    Thanks for the Reply!
    Do I need to use abs to install this? "pacman -S b43-firmware" doesn't find a package..
    Thanks

  • [SOLVED] Delay when switching between ttys

    When I switch between tt2 - tt6 right after boot, I experience a delay of about 7 seconds
    before I am presented with the respective login prompt.
    During that time, I only get a blinking cursor in the upper left corner.
    Note that I experience the delay for each tty, but only for the first time that I switch.
    After that, switching is instantaneous.
    It doesn't matter whether I am logged in on tty1 or not.
    This problems seems to be relatively new.
    Kernel mode setting is enabled.

    Okay, I have found the problem.
    Seems that I hadn't correctly enabled [email protected].
    Journalctl:
    systemd[1]: Job sys-subsystem-net-devices-multi-user.device/start timed out.
    systemd[1]: Timed out waiting for device sys-subsystem-net-devices-multi-user.device.
    systemd[1]: Dependency failed for Automatic wireless network connection using netctl profiles.
    This somehow caused the problem.
    Whenever I switched ttys before those events, I would get the 7 second delay.
    After that, everything was normal.
    After correctly configuring netctl, the problem is gone.
