[solved]PS3 Sixaxis and Steam (USB)

The sixaxis controller works with Steam out of the box!  The problem is that the buttons are just a little off.
What I've done so far:
Disabled Joystick control of mouse cursor (It was interfering with what I wanted to do)
Plugged in my sixaxis and hit the PS button (the pad won't do anything until you hit the button)
Ran HL2 Beta (which runs flawlessly by the way) and played around a bit.  I can look, move, jump, shoot, use and duck.  It's almost perfect! Much better than the Sixaxis control support for Windows7!  The problem is that I can't run fast...  and the button layout is just a little weird. (A couple of the buttons do exactly the same thing, and I suspect that other controls are missing)
I suspect that the problem is that the PC gaming world revolves around MS and their 360 controller.
Googling, I found this thread:  http://supermeatboy.com/forum/index.php?topic=2389.0    They are attempting to remap the keys to be more like the 360 controller.  Keep in mind that I don't know if this will actually solve the problem.  I followed the directions (although I'm not sure that HL2 uses SDL at all) and nothing changed.  (Maybe that's just evidence that HL2 doesn't use SDL)
Any suggestions?
PS:  I get the same results with L4D2.  HL1 doesn't work so well.  The controls do something, but they need to be calibrated specifically for that game or something (my character looks at the floor and spins in a circle)
PPS:  I think that Qjoypad might be a practical work-around.  I just think that it would be a shame to use a work around when a more elegant solution might be available.
PPPS:  I plan to update the wiki if I get this working properly.

No luck with L4D2, but I got it to work perfectly in HL2.  You just need to use the in-game key mapper.  (I don't know how I missed that)

  • [solved]PS3 Sixaxis Controller USB only

There are plenty of software and howtos to use the PS3 sixaxis controller with bluetooth, but I don't have bluetooth on my desktop.
Dmesg shows that the controller is registering:
    [100186.397697] usb 7-5: new full-speed USB device number 4 using ohci_hcd
[100186.659669] sony 0003:054C:0268.0007: Fixing up Sony Sixaxis report descriptor

I think I have the appropriate modules loaded:
    lsmod | grep -i usb
    usb_storage 47511 0
    usblp 13010 0
    usbhid 41820 1 hid_logitech_dj

    usb_common 954 1 usbcore
    $ lsmod | grep -i joydev
    joydev 9695 0
When I cat /dev/input/js0, I don't get the cascade of chaotic characters I expect when I hit the buttons and move the axes.  Instead, I get just two of those strange characters you get when you cat a binary file, and they do not change when I play with the controller.  I installed jstest and jstest-gtk, and messed around with them.  jstest-gtk knows that I have a sixaxis controller plugged in, but I see no evidence that it is receiving input from the controller when I mess around with it, including when I use the "calibrate" feature;  all that happens is that once I complete the "wizard", all values go to 0.  The reason I am doing this is of course steam, and Steam Big Picture does not respond to the controller either.  jscal -c /dev/input/js0  shows no evidence of receiving input from the controller.   Is there some kernel module that I'm missing?  Googling sixaxis kernel module doesn't reveal anything to me.
    Thanks in advance.

I think I solved it by hitting the "PS" button.

  • [Solved] Boot process hangs for installed Arch and installation usb

Hi. I've been using Arch Linux for around 6 months now and I'm in love with it. It is now my primary OS. However, I might have done something or performed some update, and I can no longer boot into Arch. The boot process hangs right before it should show the login screen (I'm using Gnome 3.6 with GDM). I see the following messages on the screen:
Loading Linux core repo kernel ...
    Loading initial ramdisk ...
    /dev/sda3: recovering journal
    /dev/sda3: clean, 330610/1749664 files, 5585671/6996827 blocks
And then it hangs right there. I have to hard-reboot after this.
I then tried to boot using the Arch Linux Installation USB (archlinux-2012.12.01-dual.img), which also hangs at a particular point, before it should show me the prompt. I took a picture of the screen where it hangs: Screen Capture. This is an issue with just my laptop, because the USB boots just fine on another laptop I tried.
I also have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10 installed on my system, and I'm able to boot into both of them.
I have 2 hard drives: /dev/sda is a 120GB SSD, and /dev/sdb is a 500GB hard disk. My partitions are as follows:
sda1 - Windows 7 100MB System Reserved Partition (boot flag enabled)
    sda2 - Windows 7 OS
sda3 - ArchLinux (boot flag enabled)
    sdb1 - Ubuntu 12.10 (boot flag enabled)
    sdb2 - Just data
I ran bootinfoscript and below is the output:

Ok.. So my Arch Linux randomly decided to work. I'm sure I didn't do anything between my last "not working" state and my current "working" state. Below are a few things I tried:
I thought of trying an earlier build of ArchLinux, and downloaded archlinux-2012.11.01-dual.iso and made a bootable USB out of it. It still hung.
I was getting error messages during Arch boot that the last access time for the disks was at a future date. I found out that Ubuntu was using localtime instead of UTC and screwing up my hardware clock. I fixed it, and thought maybe the time issues were causing the boot problem. But fixing time didn't solve my problem.
I chrooted into Arch from my Ubuntu install, ran 'sudo pacman -Syyu' and updated my Arch install.
I thought maybe GDM isn't starting up. I re-enabled the service using 'systemctl enable gdm.service'.
I removed OpenNTPd and installed NTPd. Enabled the daemon using 'systemctl enable ntpd'
None of the above solved the problem, and rebooting to Arch still hung the system. So I stopped fiddling with it yesterday. Today, as usual, I just tried logging into Arch.. And it just worked out of the blue. The solution to me is as mysterious as the problem.
I told this to my friend who introduced me to Arch, and this is what he said:
Damn it computers, you were supposed to be deterministic!

It does say in there that it does tend to mess up the clock. Also why doesn't the VIA boards have this option?

  • HP Color LaserJet CP2025dn Printer Wired Connectivity and have USB simultaneously?

    Hello to all;
    Thank you in advance.
I have a HP Color LaserJet CP2025dn Printer.
The question, can I use ethernet connection and have USB simultaneously?  Ethernet is faster, right?
Currently, I have the printer connected to network via Ethernet Wired Connectivity through an Apple Aiirport Extreme base station.  I have several Mac's all operating under 10.9.1, and two PC's (one is WIN XP, and the other WIN 8.1), which all operate fine with 2008 wired/wireless technology. I know what a dinosour. I am in the process of upgrading the household to current wireless technology with a NetGear AC1900 Nighthawk Smart WiFi Router (Model: R7000), 802.11ac Dual Band Gigabit, with two USB ports ((1) 2.0 and (1) 3.0) . I connected the printer directly into the Netgrar router, and it wouldn't print, ran setup through the Mac and Win computers and still wouldnt pring. One of the reasons that sold me on the Netgear router was the ReadySHARE® USB access—Wirelessly access & share. In order for me to utilize the ReadySHARE® feature is to connect via a USB cable.  Sob story, the longest USB cable off the shelf usually 16",  and to reach where the printer is now, I need @25-28 feet of cable. Is ther a maximum length of USB that I can use with out suffering loss of speed/functionality?
Again thank you for your time

I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial printer. You can do this at http://h30499.www3.hp.com/hpeb/

  • Boot and NO USB

    Hi,
It's the second time that I power-off my book and, when I reboot no keyboard no touchpad no bluetooth and no USB.
With desktop remote I can check the system management hardware that does show nothing under USB controller.
The first time I've tried every kind of mac reset, NVRAM PRAM SMC Safeboot ecc...NOTHING...
I have solved it with Command+C and new macosx instalation...
Finally I think that was a software problem not hardware....
After a month, today, again the same problem...any idea?

    more details,
I have a IOMEGA 1T Ultramax and a USB mouse always connected...
Here the exactly sequence to have a NO USB boot:
    - Macbook magsafe, ultramax and mouse connected.
    - Ejectetd ultramax and magsafe disconnected.
    - Macbook moved to battery working time...and powered off.
    - After one night, PowerOn and Keyboard, touchpad and every USB Death in OSX.
PS: USB works in new macosx installations, every kind of reset tried.
    Thanks for your time

  • Is it safe to plug and unplug USB and Firewire cables with the computer on?

Is it safe to plug and unplug USB and Firewire cables with the computers on? I have a Mac G4 and a newly purchased IMac and I use one printer for both computers. Should I shut down the computers when I unplug the printer and connect to the other computer? How about when switching firewire drives.
Is there an easy way to have both computers connected to the same printer? I have an Epson 1280 printer.

Yes, you can unplug a printer without shutting down the computer, but if you are switching the printer to another computer then you should first turn off the printer, unplug it, re-connect to the other computer, then turn on the printer. This will assure that the printer will be properly recognized.
If you have your computers networked via Ethernet then you can leave the printer connected to one computer and share it with the other via the network connection. Printer sharing is turned on using the Sharing preference in System Preferences. You will need to Add the printer on both computers so you will need the appropriate printer driver installed on both computers.

  • I was trying to transfer iTunes from my iPhone 4 to my new Mac Pro and now all i can get on my phone is the iTunes logo and a usb cord pointing to plug into it.  my phone wont do anything else? Help if you can?

I was trying to transfer itunes to my macpro from my iphone 4 and the phone froze up with the itunes logo and a usb cord looking like its suppose to plug into the itunes.. Now my phone wont go past that screen and i cant use the phone at all... Help if you can?

Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service.
Pictures taken with the device are designed to regularly be copied off the device to a computer as would be done with any digital camera.
If you have failed to use the device as designed it may be too late to recovery anything.
Is the device regularly backed up to a computer via iTunes?  If so, the most recent backup (when restored to a replacement iOS device) should contain all contacts and pictures as of when the backup was created.

My iphone is no longer working I have black screen with a picture of the itunes logo and a USB cable.  When I try to connect my iphone to itunes the device is not detected, can anyone help me? I desperatley need my phone back

I have had a 3GS for 2+ years.  After upgrading to IOS 4 (now 4.3.5) I began having problems.  In the past week, my screen went to the itunes logo and USB cable twice -- unprovoked -- just found it sitting there like that!  I connected to itunes and it did restore from a backup but it is a major inconvenience.  I am also searching for answers, but better back-up regularly!

    Michael,
Thanks. I haven't mixed down the audio or checked the number of tracks in Prefs. Good points.
As far as a mixdown goes, I'll definitely give it a try, though I wonder whether or not the tracks will be recognized during mix down recording - given that you can't hear either of those segments in playback. Just have to try.
Re the preferred number of allowed tracks - I'll go check as soon as I send this off, but I'm not sure that applies in this case, since the two Channels containing the segments that are pinked out are not in additional tracks. I should have mentioned that other audio clips and segments on the same Channels in the SAME tracks ARE heard in playback. As are two additional track in the 2nd Sequence. It's only when the two sequences are joined that the pink tinted segments can't be heard. Within the sequence the same audio cuts playback as they should. Thanks again &
    Best regards,
    David
