[Solved] WPA connection problems - network was WEP encrypted.

Hi all, and thanks in advance for reading.
Tl;dr for the below: My card seems to work, but won't associate with the router using either netcfg or wpa_supplicant and I have no idea why. I have no graphical system to work from as yet.
Basically, I've just installed my Arch system, and I'm trying to get the wireless working. I have two wireless cards, one internal (Atheros) and one USB (preferred - it's a Belkin F5D9050, v3). My router - a BT HomeHub - uses WPA-PSK encryption.
For the moment, I'm trying to get the Belkin card - wlan1 - working as it gives better reception at home, so I'll use that in the examples, but I've had the same results with both so far.
Running
iwlist wlan1 scan
shows my network, so I think the card itself is working ok.
My netcfg profile reads:
CONNECTION='wireless'
INTERFACE='wlan1'
SECURITY='wpa'
ESSID='BTHomeHub2-2J6S'
KEY='...'
IP='dhcp'
TIMEOUT=120 // Large timeout I know, but apparently it can make a difference.
When attempting to connect with netcfg, I get the message 'WPA Authentication/Association failed'.
Trying with wpa_supplicant.conf as below:
network={
ssid="BTHomeHub2-2J6S"
proto=RSN // I've also tried WPA2
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
pairwise=CCMP TKIP
group=CCMP TKIP
psk=[my passphrase as converted to hex by wpa_passphrase]
Running
wpa_supplicant -dd -B -Dwext -iwlan1 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
produces output similar to this.
I'm stuck. Any thoughts? Any and all help is appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

iwlist $interface scan
output you can see which ones are WEP or WPA(2):

  • How I solved my connection problem

    I suffered non connection problem sometime back with bluesoliel to Pc Suite,they way I solved it was like this:-(Btw Having 2pcs both on winXpProSP2,[1)bluesoliel 1.6.1.4.][2)bluesoliel 1.4.+.+]Nokia 6600,NGage and Nokia 3250)
    1.I started off with N6600 Pc Suite Installation, activated it and configured Mrouter by activating every comport,(while installing Pc suite dont install Connection manager).After that shut down Pc suite, and Install N activate bluesoliel do search for device once u get device pair it and check for services.
    2.By this time the serial connection service icon should light up,Click connect and you will get an ERROR message saying cant connect.Just terminate all including bluesoliel.
    3.Go to device manager and update the blue tooth driver(point to c:/program/bluesoliel till you get the driver(never use automatic search)And also blue thooth Pan device driver.Machine will want to restart,DONT.
    4.Go to C:/windows/inf here look for bth.inf rename to bth.bak.than restart pc
    5.Ater restarting dont activate Pc suite,bluesoliel will startup automaticly do the same again detect device and services connect on serial,will get a non connecting error again ,now wait a while than you can see bluesoliel connecting on 1 of the com automaticly (in my case was com 6)once u know what com its connecting automaticly note down the com port next open bluesoliel main window go to /tools/my bluethooth device,click on an another screen will open, there click on UART,than the advance cofiguration can be accesed, here choose the right com port (whch you have noted down)set baud rate to 115200,set flow control to RTS/CTS. Restart bluesoliel again.
    6.Search for device,that services, start connect on serial device,now the waiting will be shortened,the auto conectivity will swing in, fire up Pc suite it should work by now.
    Hope this helpes

    (P.s Got a few enquiries from other forum where I have posted this,and here R a few details which I might have omitted off :-)
    A) After Installing Blue tooth stacks, and also Pc suite 6600, just dont keep on restarting only but do a shutdown also, cant explain but some machines seems to get connected after shutting it down and restarting.
    b) Remember to Use only Pc suite for Nokia 6600 specific ver 1.1.0
    c) If after doing all the stuff up there n if it still cant connect check at device manager/ click on bluethooth device and on the view choose device by connection and you should get all these bluetooth devices;-
    11 Bluetooth Serial ports(e.g. COM3-COM13)
    Bluetooth PAN Network Adapter
    4 Bluetooth virtual Modem
    Bluetooth AV Audio Device
    Bluetooth SCO Audio Device
    Bluetooth HID Enum device
    Bluetooth Vcomm Manager
    Bluetooth HID Manager
    If some of them r not there do an add hardware and locate from the folder where the dongle driver is located.NEVER USE MICROSOFT DRIVERS.
    Hope this covers the rest.
    *in my opinion the problem of bluethooth connection to pc suite is caused by microsoft stacks and that also depending on the dongle plus the provided dongle*
    Cheers.

    Hello and welcome to the Forums.
    DBFixit by Pimlico software can be a god send at times trying to find and fix corrupt data. Although by Palms standards it is considered 3rd party software we cannot support it, but let me tell you we recommend it all the time to our customers with data issues. It is designed to work on Palm OS's and does a great job. I'm glad it worked out for you.

  • WPA connection problems

    I tried connecting to my home network, which is protected with a WPA password - however, i forgot what it was and typed in an incorrect one 3 times before checking from the keychain access what it should be.
    Unfortunately, when i now go on to join the network, i can put in the password but the 'join' button is greyed out.
    How can i fix this?
    Oh, and it's an Airport base station (54Mbps).

    Ok, I've played around with it a bit, and it does seem to have something to do with the password.
    I dropped the encryption on the network to test whether that was why it didn't connect, and it connected fine to the open router. Now, when I put WPA Personal encryption back on, it still doesn't let me put a password in again! Even though I put a different one on...
    I don't want to leave it open, and don't want to use WEP either (because anyone with a bit of software and 5 minutes to spare can break the encryption) - so what can I do to get it working again?

  • N95 Wifi WPA connection problem

    I recently bought the Nokia N95 and everything is working except the wifi WPA part. I DL the latest firmware (v20.0.015) but that didn't help.
    Everytime i connect with my home wifi lan it asks for a password. It doesn't matter what password i try it says "invalid pre-shared wpa key" So even simple passwords like "12345678" or "merryxmas" don't work. If i change from WPA-PSK to WEP 128 bit WEP key then it works ???
    This must be a N95 error ? I also tried tkip and aes but that didn't help. My Phone AP settings r:
    Network - public
    WPA/WPA-2
    Pre-shared key
    WPA-2 only - off
    Does anybody has a working WPA wifi N95 ???

    If I connect to the PC as "Mass Storage" I can see the phone as a removable disk and go into the file structure, just as I could in PC Suite mode. However, if try to drag and drop a file from my N95 to the desktop the phone bleeps intermittently every 2-10 seconds, the USB connection icon on the phone display will blink in time to the phone bleep. The "Copying" bar on the PC shows the file transfer occurring but extremely slowly. E.g. A 4Mb MP4 showed 3 minutes on the progress bar but after 10 minutes was barely a sixth of the way through.
    It appears that the connection betweeen the phone and PC is only active when the phone bleeps, in the periods of silence there is seemingly no activity. I think this because if I look at the file structure on the phone, while the trasfer is taking place, the window will freeze until the next bleep of the phone.
    Maybe someone can recommend a brand and model USB2.0 PCI card (preferably also with firewire) so that I can buy one that I know works?

  • Can't connect to network with wep enabled

    I'm having problems connecting my mbp to my wireless network. It connects fine with no security enabled but when security is enabled I type in the wep key and I get a message saying there was an error conecting.
    I have read loads of other posts and it seems a lot of people have managed to sort this problem by putting a '$' in front of the wep key when trying to connect. This is not working for me.
    Is anyone in the same boat?
    Does anyone know how to get around this?

    See if any of this helps:

    Be sure you have the latest Airport software installed on your computer. Depending upon the particular router you are using you may need a firmware update for the router (if it's third-party or an older Apple Base Station that may need a firmware update.)

  • [SOLVED] Wireless Connection Problems - Broadcom Corporation BCM4318

    Attempting to troubleshoot wifi connectivity issues on a fresh install on an old dell Inspiron 2200. This laptop uses the Broadcom b43 driver:
    http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43
    I read that page top to bottom, installed b43-fwcutter firmware extraction tool, installed the b43 driver. lsmod confirms b43 is installed. lspci shows the drivers are installed, but I can't get the interface to show with ip link or ip addr.
    lspci -vnn | grep 14e4:

    I'm confused by dmesg below because it first tells me that "b43-phy0: Broadcom 4318 WLAN found" then a few lines down says driver not found.

    Got it running, was missing "b43-firmware" from the AUR, which is different than b43-fwcutter. Instructions kind of unclear there, but hey it's running.

  • How can I solve these connection problems in Mail 3.2?

    I have an iBook G4 that is running Leopard (10.5.2). I use it at home via an Airport connection and at work via a direct ethernet connection or router. I have the only Mac in my office. Within Mail I have set up my .Mac account as IMAP, and also import mail from my work POP account into Mail. Until recently this has been an elegant solution for my email needs (except for the fact that multiple copies of the same message from the POP account often turn up in Mail). The iBook still works fine at home, but now it doesn't at work. Our work internet connection is DSL and pretty slow. When using Connection Doctor, I can see what I have been experiencing at work. Usually the POP work email account is connected, but often the IMAP .Mac email account is not. The same goes for the out-going .Mac mail server. I have never had to set the preferences for these two email accounts differently in Mail to account for when I am at home and when I am at work. Could the reason be: the slow internet connection? changed settings for the internet connection by the cable company at work? something else? Any ideas would be appreciated!

    You may be experiencing problems that can be resolved by following advice on the following link.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1307?viewlocale=en_US
    Good luck.

  • WLan driver installation solved WLan connection problems on Satellite P200

    After 2 fruitless days of trying to get my wireless adapter to recognize my home network I finally stumbled on the solution. I have a Satelitte P200 which used the AtherosAR5007EG adapter.
    If you go back to the Windows XP 32 bit drivers it works like a charm. Installed the new driver and it found my network right away and I could get on the internet.

    Hi
    You are a owner of the new P200? Its a great notebook I like the design
    Anyway thanks for the great info and I wonder that a XP WLan driver works with Vista OS
    Bye

  • Cannot connect with WEP Encryption

    I have had my new iMac intel for about 5 days now and I must say, it's been amazing. It's a welcome change from the dark and gloomy world of windows pc's. I have just one problem connecting to my wireless network when WEP Encryption is turned on. The AirPort extreme card on my imac can connect to the network fine without the WEP encryption, but as soon as i turn wep encryption on, and enter the code on my imac, it refuses to connect, sometimes saying the password is incorrect or other times just saying there was an error in the connection. I've checked the password many times and my windows pc can connect to the network fine using the same password. Is there anything I'm doing wrong? Am I selecting the right type of WEP? If I cannot use WEP anymore for some reason to make it work with my iMac, is MAC-Address protection safe enough? Thanks in advance for your help.

    I have just one problem connecting to my wireless network when WEP Encryption is turned on.
    I along with anyone else would have no problem connecting to your network.
    I could sit outside your house and crack your WEP key sometimes in minutes using tools readliy available on the internet.
    Even if you turn on MAC Address protection also it offers no security either. MAC address can be spoofed and detected.
    The only security you should consider using is WPA.

  • Canadian store connection problem solved

    As I said in a previous thread I would like to thank cgygeek and Timmy Y for solving the connection problem to the Canadian Itunes store. For those still trying to get in, you have to completely disable Norton Antivirus 2006 for the duration of time you want to shop in Itunes. (not just the firewall) Apparently the 2007 Norton Antitvirus doesn't create a problem for the store.
      Windows XP

    When you installed NIS 2007, did you use Norton's software removal tool to remove NIS 2006? I believe if you don't use this, files from NIS 2006 remain that cause the connection problem. I would suggest you talk to Symantec as they are aware of the iTunes connection problem and will help you more than Apple and you can have a live chat with a support person for free.

  • IP question re. sporadic connection problem

    My ISP can't find anything wrong with my Internet connection, but the connection goes bad a lot, for maybe 40 seconds to a minute at a time, then corrects itself. I think this happens more when I'm using Airport but it happens sometimes when I am directly connected to the modem. I have lots of questions but the first one is this: should a browser be able to connect to a website the instant that a new IP address appears in the Ethernet panel of Network Preferences, or should I expect to wait another half minute or more?
    When I am having a connection problem and am using Airport, I often unplug the modem-to-airport Ethernet cable and plug it into the computer. Then I wait until Network Prefs shows the new IP address. At this point it usually takes at least another half a minute or a minute or even more until any Internet connection is possible. I want to know whether this extra delay is normal and should be expected because it's a new connection, or whether this half minute or minute represents a continuation of the connection problem that was happening before I unplugged Airport.

    Oh, definitely when I have trouble (browser timing-out when looking for a server-- any server) other users of my WiFi have the same trouble.
    There's no question that my Internet experience on WiFi is awful. There are also a lot of other networks in the air, usually about 15, and my ISP has said it must be because of that. I have my Airport Extreme set to a channel where there may be one strong signal on the same or a nearby channel; it's the best I can do and I use iStumbler to keep track. But network interference can't be the cause of Airport's losing its IP address and going amber, can it? This happens every half hour on some days (and some days not at all). When it happens I don't know where the trouble is, but I switched Airports with someone for a week and nothing changed.
    I also noticed that when it happens, a computer connected to the Airport Extreme by Ethernet also fails to make connections. Which has to narrow the problem down, I suppose.
    And when it happens, if I take Airport out of the picture entirely, by quickly taking the cable coming from the modem to the Airport, unplugging it from Airport and plugging it into my computer, the computer gets a new IP address in fairly short order, but takes a lot longer than that to be able to make Internet connections. Thanks, Joe, for your experience, which makes me think maybe that extra delay is a symptom of whatever my trouble is.
    ISP continues to tell me that everything tests clean.

  • Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?  It used to work with old Airport Extreme with updates thru Snow Leopard but now seems to only allow WEP encryption instead of WPA.

    Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?  It used to work with old Airport Extreme network, run from a intel iMac with updates thru Mavericks but now seems to only allow WEP encryption instead of WPA and can't connect to Time Capsule.  Airport Extreme Base was controllable from either computer up through Snow Leopard (I didn't do any of the Lion upgrades).  Then when I upgraded to Mavericks I lost the ability to use Airport Utility with this hardware on the Sunflower but could still connect wirelessly to network without any problems.  But now with the Time Capsule upgrade the Sunflower is blocked from network by a dialogue that requests ony WEP password, not WPA pwd used by Time Capsule.  Neither can I use the old airport extreme base to extend the time capsule network since I can't input the correct password/encryption approach to join it.  Is there a work around?  Would a newer but old Airport Express be able to extend network to Sunflower?  Or maybe a third party wireless (such as Netgear, Dlink, etc) that has browser type control rather than special utility?
    Another question--before I used MAC addresses to control who could access network.  Now on Time Capsule I don't see anything about this--so is it true now that the only access control is via WPA2 pwd now (which appears to be the encryption pwd and not the time capsule pwd)?

    Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?
    I can’t claim to completely grasp the issue(s) you’re describing, but the underlying problem is presumably your iMac’s obsolete AirPort card. Whatever the case, an obvious (if not particularly helpful) answer to your stated question would be to connect your iMac with an ethernet cable, using powerline adapters as an alternative if you don’t want to have wire running all over the place.
    My still fully functional clamshell iBook, with an original AirPort card, connects wirelessly to my 4th Generation TC network by means of a cheap 802.11b/g/n USB Wi-Fi adapter. This might be an option for you too.
    Another question--before I used MAC addresses to control who could access network.  Now on Time Capsule I don't see anything about this
    When you edit your TC's settings the access controls appear under the Network tab, don't they?

  • WEP encrypted network - can't connect

    I'm trying to use netcfg2.0.6 to connect to a WEP-encrypted network, but it doesn't work, with the error message:
    :: father up - Wireless association failed. [FAIL]
    I can correctly connect to a different wpa-encrypted network, so I'm assuming it's a problem with my configuration, not my hardware.
    ifconfig -a (just relevant wlan0 part) gives:
    wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:15:AF:3B:64:A9
    UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
    RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
    RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
    iwconfig before attempting to connect (however, I have tried to connect earlier today, which is probably why the ESSID is set):
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"02wireless314821"
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
    Tx-Power=27 dBm
    Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr=2352 B
    Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
    Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
    The profile I'm using for this connection is:
    CONNECTION="wireless"
    INTERFACE=wlan0
    SCAN=no
    SECURITY="wep"
    ESSID="02wireless314821"
    KEY="xxxxxxxxxx"
    IP="dhcp"
    TIMEOUT=20
    I'm using the stock kernel from testing, with the rtl8187 driver.
    Does anyone have any idea what's wrong, and how to fix it?

    I have the exactly same issue. I have to do 'netcfg2 wifi' about 3-5 times to connect. I also have iwl3945. More here (my thread about this issue). I quickly wrote this script:
    #!/bin/bash
    ifconfig wlan0 up
    iwconfig wlan0 essid linksys key `grep KEY /etc/network.d/wifi | cut -d'"' -f2`
    sleep 1
    ifconfig wlan0 192.168.1.101
    echo "nameserver 192.168.1.1" > /etc/resolv.conf
    route add default gw 192.168.1.1
    sleep 1
    ping www.seznam.cz
    When run for the firs time, it freezes and I have to do ^C (C-c or Ctrl-c) to kill it and run it again. Second time it goes like:
    SIOCADDRT: File exists
    PING www.seznam.cz (77.75.76.3) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from www.seznam.cz (77.75.76.3): icmp_seq=1 ttl=56 time=14.1 ms
    64 bytes from www.seznam.cz (77.75.76.3): icmp_seq=2 ttl=56 time=13.6 ms
    ^C
    --- www.seznam.cz ping statistics ---
    2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1003ms
    rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 13.680/13.938/14.197/0.284 ms
    I haven't tested it more yet, because it works ten times faster than netcfg2 for me, which makes me happy for now. I have no idea whats going on behind if/iw commands.
