Spirals of death

My Mac crashed recently, and when I restarted, Mail acted up and hasn't been the same. Here's what's happening:
- The little spiral animation won't stop on any of my accounts.
- When it's importing messages from the server, it will hang on a random e-mail message and not download any other e-mails. I can still send out, though.
- Mail on my laptop still works fine, so I'm positing that its a problem with the program on the Mac tower, not the my mail servers.
Here's what I've done to fix it:
- I've gone in through my webmail interface and cleared off all the e-mails on there. So there's nothing for it to import.
- I've deleted my plist preference files. It works fine with just my base MobileMe account, but when I start adding my other accounts, everything goes blooey.
Anyone have any ideas?

I would do a disk repair. (Check without repair first, if you want. To repair you will have to be booted off of some other partition-- the install DVD or an external HD.)

  • I keep getting error 0xE8000068 ipod error, any ideas of what i should do?

i keep getting this error everytime i sync my ipod touch 3g to my computer. i have windows vista and i keep turning the ipod on/off, let it charge fully and used different usb ports. idk what else to do. any ideas?

Yep, i did reinstall iTunes (I don't have any other Apple software) and I keep everything (except BIOS) updated religiously. It didn't help.
To add to my previous post - when I was able to connect to iTunes that one time, iTunes started downloading 750 Mb update. About 20% into download, iPod disconnected and went into the same old spiral of death with  0xE8000068 error in iTunes. I kept it connected and tried to reconnect again, without success. I was afraid to close iTunes, so I waited until iTunes downloaded all of 750Mb, and voila - by morning, iPod was restored.. Albeit a little weird, it wasn't restored to factory settings, it just managed to boot correctly and now works. It seems to be missing some files (e.g. iTuneU won't show any subscriptions, but I can still listen and watch the lectures from iTunesU through "Music"->"iTunesU" menu).
So far so good. I'll just restore it when I listen through my 6Gb of lectures and podcasts - I'm in Hawaii on vacation now, using hotel's WiFi and I don't know how kindly the hosts will look upon 6Gb download within a day, maybe they pay per gigabyte here. Besides I ain't fixing what works.

  • Upgrade from VS 2010 to VS 2012 - SSRS Data Extension no longer works.

I have upgraded to VS 2012 (with BI Tools) installed. We have an SSRS Data Extension that worked fine with VS 2010, both in the VS designer and on the SSRS server. I made the same changes as VS2010 to RSReportDesigner.config and RSPreviewPolicy.config
in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\ and the data extension name is there in the data source dropdown, but it isn't the localized name from the assembly - so obviously the assembly does not appear to be
loading properly.  In ProcMon, I can see devenv finding the DLL and even doing a load image on it, but clearly I am missing something. Any ideas or at least hints on how to troubleshoot this?
My dev machine is Windows 7 x64. The VS 2010 version was compiled for Any CPU (I have tried this one). I have also tried to build an x86 version, since I read somewhere it needs to be compiled for 32 bits. I also tried a debugging version that logs every
call and clearly VS isn't calling anything, since a log isn't even created.
    Please help!
    Thanks
    Mitch vH
btw; not related - but it is kind of lame that I am having to use Chrome to create this, since IE went to a spiral of death trying to sign me into my live account.

    Hi Mitch vH,
According to your description, the issue is that you cannot load the assembly in the Reporting Services. Based on my research, when the process or configured impersonation account does not have permissions access to the ASP.NET temporary files folder will
cannot load the assembly. To avoid this issue, please try to specify the Read/Write permission for an account to:
    C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\ReportSerever
And please check have you referenced there some other special assembly in your DLL, which is may missing on the server? There is a similar issue, you can refer to it.
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13379804/could-not-load-file-or-assembly-in-reporting-services
Hope this helps. If the issue is persist, please check if you have get any error message. Could you please post the error message? It is benefit for further analysis.

  • HTML5 video player won't load YouTube videos (and probably nothing else either)

When I request that YouTube use the HTML5 video player for videos, no videos will load - I have to switch to Adobe Flash for anything to play. The page for a video will finish loading and I'll just sit there watching the loading spiral of death ceaselessly. I've tried a number of suggestions from other threads with similar issues and nothing's helped.
    - Safe Mode does NOT fix the problem (so it's not an add-on or script issue)
    - Clearing cookies/cache does not work
    - Toggling the media.windows-media-foundation.enabled setting does nothing
    - Disabling hardware acceleration also does nothing
I'm at my wit's end. Flash will hang and crash REALLY often so I don't want to use it, but it's the only thing that works for YouTube. Please help.

You have to download and install Adobe Flash. Flash is not pre-installed.

  • Apple TV constantly buffer

    Hello,
I'm having a hard time streaming any of my iTunes movies through to my Apple TV (2nd Gen). I've confirmed that both iTunes and Apple TV are updated and reset the wifi a couple of times but still nothing. I can easily stream music but when I try movies it just sitted with the spiral of death. Any suggests are welcome as I'm so frustrated.
    Thanks,

Make sure you are accessing the computers icon, if you are under the movies icon then you will be streaming from the cloud.
If having issues with home sharing then there may be an issue with your local network. Reboot ATV and router. If on wifi try Ethernet.
If you intend to stream from the cloud, ensure your connection is adequate by using speedtest.net (HD streaming needs at least 6mbps). Make sure DNS is set to automatic (settings - general - network)

  • I need to replace macbook 2009 disc does apple store do it?

I upgraded to Maverick and had lots of the same problems other people have had. However, I was able to fix most of them -- except my Samsung monitor doesn't seem to want to connect anymore, I see the spiral of death way too often, my computer is freezing, etc. SO I think the real issue may well be that my disc is failing. Has anyone had to replace their discs. Did the Apple store do it? There's a good place in Evanston that I can go to tomorrow for help. I have an appt at an Apple store today to learn about Maverick. But it would be really good if I had the right questions to ask. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

There are a few caveats.  While it is true that there are no viruses currently in the wild that will infect your Mac that you may encounter on a Windows machine simply by visiting certain websites.  That does not mean that you do not need to exercise reasonable care in terms of what you download and install.  If you download programs from torrent sites or other questionable websites and authorize their installation, those programs can contain things just as harmful as you would find on a PC.  I only bring this up becuase the impression is sometimes given that a Mac "can't" be infected by a virus or malware which can lead people to believe they can do whatever they want without fear of consequences.
Also... if you share files with Windows users, it is possible that you can receive an infected file (which can't infect your Mac) and pass it on to other Windows users.
Basically, if you don't download questionable material, your Mac will be fine.  If you share files with Windows users, you may want to install something to scan those just to make sure you don't pass anything on to anyone else.  The most common Mac antivirus program is ClamXav which is free:

  • FCP won't fully launch after power outage

    Hello all,
I walked away for a long render - while gone the electricity went out. The G4 was on a battery back up but the firewire destination drive was not.
I saved the project under a new name and rebooted the whole system. Now, FCP will not fully launch. The opening screen comes up and launch starts to the point it finds my SONY dsr-45 but then it does not open up for a new or old project from the alias nor from double clicking the project name from Finder.
I re-installed FCP and sent older versions to the trash. Still does not fully open.
Other applications (Photoshop) operate as usual. AAAAAUUUUUUUGGGHHHHHHHHHH !
...anybody have any good ideas what to try next?
    Fustrated and on deadline.

This gets better... I have a McBkPro with the same version of FCP. So I connect the same FW drive to it to keep editing. But many of the render files were on the G4 so I render again on this machine... the process locks up in the same place each time. I figure it is a corrupt media file so I dis able the clip from the sequence and try to render the same selection - it does fine and finishes the render. Then I move to a diffeerent area on the sequence to render there and again a lock up. This is spiral of death frozen - have to hold the power button down to reboot FROZEN !!!
I am beginning to think the G4 needs a complete and total UN-install of FCP and re-install.
And the FW drive has physical damage from loosing power during a render/write and is dead.
    Any thoughts?

  • My MacBook Pro told me I needed to restart my computer?

..with a little black box that popped up and disabled me from using any buttons or the trackpad. When I restarted it all I got was the white screen and the apple and the spinning spiral of death underneath it. It won't finish booting up. Help!!

Start you computer in safe mode (holding down the shift key while restart) that may help.

  • How do I exit the Mavericks death spiral?

Has anyone had Mavericks crash their laptop? We attempted to install Mavericks. Mavericks took away the old operating system and then failed to install itself, going into a continual death spiral where it just keeps trying to install. We have taken it to the apple store and they said it looked like a disk failure. But the computer had been fine up until the install. We have tried turning it into a transfer disk to remove files, but although it will go into firewire transfer mode, no other computers will recognize it as such. Help?!? Anyone had this problem?

With it in firewire target disc mode, try running disc utility on it and choose repair disc - see if there are errors.
If no other computer recognzes it, it does sound like a corrupted file system or bad disc in some way - that could be entirely coincidental to the timing of your attempted Mavericks install.  Hard drives, often when they do fail, have a tendancy to go bad suddenly and without warning.
Hopefully, you had already been backing up that machine - the time to try to make backups is before unexpected disaster strikes, not afterwards.

  • XIpod Touch in death spiral - unable to access main screen

My daughter's Ipod Touch, 4th gen needs a version update, but I'm unable to synch it to my Mac for the upgrade as the Ipod memory space is full.  I'm unable to access the Ipod main screens to delete apps to free space...the death spiral (blank screen w/the "thinking" circle) is all that appears.  Any ideas to break it out of the death spiral to reboot?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • FCPX and spinning ball of death

Ever since I "up"  graded to Mavericks, FCPX has struggled, my whole computer slowed down drastically so much that I had to take it
to the genius bar.   Five "geniuses"  tried to figure out what was wrong for SIX HOURS!
Continually assuring me this was not usual.   Yeah, right.  Across the internet the spinning ball of death with FCPX and Mavericks is pretty well known.
The only solution they offered was to wipe my drive.  After six hours and NO other solutions, I conceded to the murder of my computer, backing it up, of course.
FCPX seemed to work temporarily after that, but as soon I got into serious editing it went right back to taunting me with endless rainbow balls spiraling whenever I needed to simply look at a clip! Or event!
    It worked FINE before Mavericks!!!!!!!
    I regret the upgrade...
I hope you fix this because jobs are on the line here....  And sleep is necessary for an editor to do her job.

Could not agree more. Trying to prepare DVDs of dance student evidence for assessment of final grades. Needing to select material from various clips all in same event to illustrate key points for each student (a perfectly reasonable editing task). ALL clips have been optimised and all copied into the library. Almost every time I need to preview a new clip (i.e. skim from one clip into another) I get the beach ball and have to wait minutes.
I tried raising this as a bug (I am a developer) and got brushed off with the "not enough information" reply, because I cannot find any of these problems reported in the system logs.
Everything was working really, really well before Mavericks and 10.1 - I think someone re-wrote things for the new MacPro but broke it for iMac users. Not a good way of persuading me to buy a Mac Pro, by the way.

  • Wrt54g2 v1 dies a slow death?

    Howdy everyone,
Just curious if anyone else has run into this odd problem...  I've had a WRT54G2 for less than 90 days and last night it seemed to die a slow death over several hours.
The first symptom was all browser pages loading extremely slowly or not resolving at all and later the router appeared to not be connecting to an also newish Linksys CM1000 modem. I then logged into the router and confirmed it was not receiving an ip address from the modem.  The modem and net connection are both fine after a direct connection test so the issue is definitely the router and now the router isn't connecting to the modem at all.
I've done all the usual troubleshooting including multiple power recycles and resets to no avail.
Anyone else run into this slow death spiral?
    Thanks.

Have you tried to upgrade the firmware of your Router? You can download the firmware from the Linksys website and Upgrade / Re-flash the firmware on your Router.
Once the firmware upgrade is completed successfully, then you need to reset your router and re-configure all the settings on it from scratch.
