Start up problem and temporary solution

my 2 year old ibook g4 has been shutting down randomly for past several weeks. i tried holding down the power button and apple keys. this only resulted in the fan blowing and no start up sound. i also tried holding down the applepr keys based on what the help book suggested. this didn't work either.
here's what's works to start up my ibook. i read in one of these dicussions that if you sqeeze/press firmly on the left side of the track pad the computer will start. i tried it and voila it works!
the problem now is that it still shuts down after a day or two of being on all day. to get it to start quickly after a crash i've been pressing my elbow into the left side next to the track pad. this works all the time for now but if i move my elbow computer crashes. hence i am now typing with one finger while pressing my elbow into left side next to track pad!
i spoke to apple support and they said it seems to be a hardware issue. i didnt buy apple care so now i will have to find extra money that i don't have to fix this.
is anyone else having this problem? is there an inexpensive way to fix this? what is below the left side of the track pad that is causing this problem?
please help my elbow is sore!

If the safe boot worked well and a restart produced the same adverse symptoms suggests a problem caused by a third party application.  If you delete all third party items and reinstall them systematically, you might be able to find the 'trouble maker'.

    This is new for me and if somebody else has a similar issue I would love to hear it.

    After reading through multiple discussion posts and responses, I did the following and my ethernet port is working!
    1) From System Preferences --> Networks, I arranged so that the Ethernet is first in the list followed by Wifi
    2) Unplugged my Airport Extreme wifi router and left it for 5 minutes.
    3) Plugged in my Airport Extreme wifi router and watched the Ethernet connection status turn GREEN.
    4) Opened Safari and the Internet now works!
    Hope this helps others that might be having the same issue.

    Hello again octopus78,
    Based on the information you have given me, I would suggest following this document on when the Screen is Blank after Starting the Computer.
    If the issue persists I suggest creating a backup by following this document on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8). The next step will be to recover your Operating System by Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8).

  • Updated to OS X Maverick and now the keyboard doesn't work. Anyone with similar problem and a solution?

    I recently updated to the OS X Maverick  and the keyboard   just stopped functioning after working fine the first day. Pressing any key just produces a ding, but no mark. Pressing the return key produces a black dot as if you were putting in a confidential password. Has anyone had a similar problem and a possible solution? Thanks. mj-t

    I am having the same problem and its not on every call, its very hit or miss, but very aggrovating. The screen just goes black and the home key nor the power button on top have any affect. Then the locked screen will show but you can't unlock the phone. I have to let it sit for a minute and then I can push the home button and go on in and the call is finally disconnected.

  • After installing iOS5 the syncing from iPhone to PC does not update PC.  PC to iPhone is okay.  Anyone having same problem and/or solution?

    After installing iOS5 on my iPhone 4 I am having a problem syncing Calendar, Contacts etc.  If I say add something in Calendar on my iPhone it will not sync to my PC, even though is says it is.  However if I add something to my Calendar on my PC (using Outlook) it will sync to my iPhone.  Anyone having the same issues and/or solution?

    Ok. I disabled hardware acceleration. The only extension is the McAfee Scriptscan for Firefox 15.1.0, which was already disabled. I then disabled all plugins (Acrobat, Google Update, Intel Identity Protection (2x), Java Deployment Toolkit, Java Platform, MS Office 2013, Quicktime, Shockwave, Silverlight), which were all up to date.
    Normal or safe mode still has same result. No startup, no option button and no customize.
    Thanks for your help. Got any other suggestions?

  • Start up problems and screen shake

    Dear all
    I have started experiencing problems when I start up my iMac. Prior to the Blue Apple Screen appearing on startup I get a fuzzy grey screen with thin lines moving up and down the screen. This lasts for about 5 seconds then clears when the Blue Apple screen comes on. It never used to do this.
    Once I am logged in my screen tends to have a series of small dots (like pixels) forming short lines across the screen. These change each time I log on.
    Also, when this has happened the whole screen goes 'fuzzy' for a few seconds before clearing again. This can re-occur at any moment.
    This problem does not always happen but maybe three out of four start ups. If the problem at start up does not occur then I do not experience the fuzzy screen.
    Any ideas? I am very concerned that something critical is up.
    I have done the most recent updates.
    ps I am not a computer whiz!
    Regards
    Adam

    Hi Adam,
    This is exactly what is happening to my iMac which will be repaired this week. It is critical but it is due to a known fault on some of the iMacs.
    Go to http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
    Even if your iMac is out of the 1 year warrenty it will be covered for this.

  • V570 - Clean Install Problems and Some Solutions

    And where is this new bios?
    I ran into the same problem all these guys mentioned with Windows 7 Ultimate installing on the EFI partition.  The wireless adapter simply does not start.
    I only see the bios version 36 uploaded on August 17 which does not solve this issue for the Lenovo V570.

    I have managed to install Win 7 64bit on the laptop.
    Here is what I did, for whoever is interested:
    Burnt an Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD and booted from it; be patient, it takes a long time to read the files from the CD.  (Ubuntu 11.04 displayed a black screen after booting)
    Using GParted, I've created a NTFS Primary partition from all of the other existing partitions except the hidden LENOVO_PART, so I now have 2 partitions.
    After this, I've followed the instructions posted by Obrut here: instructions (the post called Shutdown/Reboot hang problem solved!)
    I haven't tried to use the OneKey Recovery key, although I kept the hidden partition. I don't have too high hopes that the OKR will continue to work, since I've changed the other partitions. Maybe Lenovo will come with a solution to this issue.
    Anyway, Win7 is installed. In the following days, I will try to dual boot with Ubuntu.
    Further questions:
    Do you recommend updating BIOS to the new version or take the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." approach?
    When installing Ubuntu, what GRUB version should I install? (efi, legacy..)
    Are there any (new) configurations that I should make or drivers I should download? I mention that I've installed the drivers on the DVD and updated via Win Update.
    Thank you very much for your help JameZ and also thank you for the instructions, Obrut.

  • WRT300NV1 Problems and a solution

    After spending 2.5 hrs on the tech support line, being disconnected 4 time and having to explain the problem 4 times here is the solution that I found for the following problem.
    I have an 13 node network. 4 desktop computers, 1 laptop and 2 printers on the wired side of the router. 2 laptops (1 N and 1 G) and 2 desktop computers (both N) and 2 PDA's (both G) on the wireless side of the router. This network has been up for the past 3 years without issues. The Linksys router replaced a Belkin 54G router as I wanted the additional range and speed of the 802.N
    Problems:
    1. Computers on the wireless side could not print to a printer on the wired side of the router.
    2. Computers on the wired side could not open or see file shares on the wireless side.
    3. Computers on the wireless side could not open or see file shares on the wired side.
    What I did before contacting support:
    1. All systems could ping all other systems on both wired and wireless sides of the router.
    2. All systems have access to the internet.
    3. Checked and disabled firewall on wireless computers - NO Effect, still could not print.
    4. Checked for updated firmware - no newer firmware available, router is on the latest version
    5. Checked Linksys knowledge base for this issue - not found
    6. Re-downloaded and flashed firmware - suspect that it was corrupted - did not fix problem
    7. Rebooted the router multiple times with no effect
    Contacted Tech support.
    I could go in to a blow by blow account of the multiple phone calls but it is just the same support calls that they don't understand or listen to what you are trying to tell them. they just keep on going on some script that they have and it usually doesn't have anything to do with what your problem is. Every time that the tech would get to a place that they had no clue what to do next they would ask if they could put me on hold so they could talk to there supervisor. I would tell them sure and I would get put on hold. then anywhere from 30 sec to 5 minuets the phone would go dead and I would loose the connection. The most interesting one was the tech was telling me that I needed to contact the printer manufacture. When I asked why all she would say was that the wireless computers could not print to it so I needed to contact them. When I told her that I worked for the printer manufacture (I do work for them) and I asked again, why she wanted me to contact them. She immediately put me on hold and then the phone went dead 30 sec later.
    At this point I was very frustrated. I started poking around in the router web console. I came across a setting that is called "AP Isolation" For those like me that are not sure what this means here is the definition.
    "AP Isolation. This isolates all wireless clients and wireless devices on your network from each other. Wireless devices will be able to communicate with the Router but not with each other. To use this function, click Enabled. AP Isolation is disabled by default."
    Wow! this sounded like something I was experiencing. So I enabled it. guess what--- Problem solved everything started working the way it was suppose to be working. Printing and file sharing were now back online. So to bring this long story to a close it would appear that the coders for the latest firmware got this one backwards or miscoded it somewhere.

    There is a hard way and an easy way...
    The hard way is to use a packet sniffing utility such as WireShark to record all the traffic, and then wade through all the packets looking for problems. This can be difficult to do for non-broadcast problems since most low end switches do not have provisions for monitoring all traffic, and a switch will limit all non-broadcast traffic based on its ARP tables, so that ports which don't need to see traffic will not be bothered by it. In other words, in a switched environment it can be difficult to monitor all traffic, unless your switch specifically supports it.
    And now, the easy way:
    Almost all switches, even the really really cheap ones, have access lights for each port connector. Broadcast storms are easy to see visually because the activity lights on all ports that have devices attached will blink like crazy in unison, because broadcast packets are being sent to all devices simultaneously. At this point, you can unplug network cables one at a time until the lights calm down. The last cable you pulled will be atttached to the offending device. If you want to be pendantic, you can then attach a hub (as opposed to a switch) on the network segment that the offending device is on, and use WireShark (or Ethereal, or whatever...) to look at the problem in depth. Or if you want to be lazy you can just reset the device and see if the problem goes away.
    Good luck,
    -Rory

  • G4 problems and as solution can i upgrade wifi on powerbook

    Basically can i upgrade the wifi speed of my powerbook.
    I have a G4 with an airport extreme attached, and my wii connects to the network too.
    My G4 is on its last legs i think, the power supply is dodgy and this has already fried the usb ports of my apple lcd monitor, and for about a year the usb ports on the G4 only work with mouse, keyboard, bluetooth, card reader, and not with a usb 2.0 drive. My usb scanner blew up, guess that wasnt a coincidence.
    I even added a usb 2.0 pcmcia card which operates exactly the same.
    I have an ijoy media player (usb 2.0) so what ive had to do to get tv programs onto it is download on the G4, copy onto a firewire lacie pocketdrive and then attach the ijoy to the powerbook which has a usb 2.0 pcmcia card, and the pocket drive via firewire. A long way for a shortcut but all good.
    In the last few days, the G4 has had big problems with the pocket drive (which is fine with the powerbook). It doesnt mount. The mouse cursor goes all juddery when its plugged in and then the mac crashes. Trying to get to a solution in between the crashes, using disc utility i can see the drive but it wont mount. When i try instead to format it, it crashes. It obviously hadnt done anything about the formatting as when i plug it in again to the powerbook there are still the last files on it.
    I tried restarting into techtool pro. If i do this with the pocket drive plugged in it wont start up, freezing on the startup screen. If i plug the drive in when the techtools is open it cant see it.
    So problem number 1, is my G4 power supply about to die or could there be something else wrong? If it is the power supply, is there a cheaper solution than spending a few hundred euro on a new apple one for an almost obsolete machine? Bear in mind my monitor is an apple 17" so if i replace the machine i have to replace the monitor.
    Possible solution in the meantime to make sure the wife gets her kitchen nightmares et all, the only way i can think to get the files from G4 to powerbook so then onto ijoy, is a wired or wireless network.
    So i can either pull out the ethernet from the router and stick it into the powerbook, will this create a network immediately?
    Or i can use wifi. Is this easy? I figure it will be slow as the powerbook is 802.11b. Can i add a usb wifi 802.11g card (no point in n as the airport extreme box is g) and will this make much of a difference?
    Sorry long ramble, thanks for any advice...

    I do not see any indication of the Mhz/Ghz in the batter door.  I have attached pictures of the interior.  Hope this helps.  I do not, necessarily, want to recover any data.  My intention was to only wipe existing data, and then use this older unit just for accessing the internet.  Since I could access the wireless network before the wipe, it did not occur to me that I would not be able after the reinstall.  Thanks

  • Anybody faced this problem and got solution?

    Hi Technosavvians
    This is Rajesh. Working on webApplication project.The project Environment is in
    Struts1.1 Framework with jdk1.4.2_01,WebServer as Tomcat5 on O.S Linux connecting back-end Mysql.
    Next thing is I've properly closed each connection whenever I've opened the connection.So the db connection is properly maintained.And
    Session too also properly maintained.In struts1.1 struts-config.xml
    just for connection pooling I've coded <data-source> tag like
         <data-sources>
              <data-source type="org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource">
                   <set-property property="driverClassName"
                   value="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver"/>
                   <set-property property="url"
                   value="jdbc:mysql://ip address/contextname"/>
                   <set-property property="username"
                   value=""/>
                   <set-property property="password"
                   value=""/>
                   <set-property property="removeAbandoned"
                   value="true"/>
                   <set-property property="removeAbandonedTimeout"
                   value="60"/>
              </data-source>
         </data-sources>
    So for every 60 seconds the connection pool is checked to freeze-out the unwanted Connection.
    Every thing works fine on first day but on the consecutive day it troubles.
    MAIN PROBLEM STATEMENT IS
    On the next day my LOGIN page can't be accessed and mainly my DB too can't be accessed.
    So I want to know where will problem arise.Whether it's in Database Pooling or Tomcat related problems.
    Please if any body faced the same problem pls update me regarding this issues.It's really painning & brainstorming.please help me to find out
    a solution.
    Thankx in Advance.

    i am Technician in a reputed mnc company. I am new to Microsoft servers. I learned MCSE 2008 and have basic trouble shooting knowledge.To improve my knowledge on these servers and how can i know real issues in a company occurs , solution to them. Please

    If you want to know more about issues related to your own internal servers, I'd simply start by reviewing the event logs and running perfmon in the short term to look for issues.  For more long term management and monitoring I'd look to a tool
    like System Center Operations Manager:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh205987.aspx
    For general troubleshooting skills growth, I'd stick around these forums and just read issues as they occur and try to assist with resolving some that you feel you can.
