Stop 10.6.8 ignoring ext HD?
So my daughter's G4 iBook died and I've pulled the HD out and put it in an enclosure and connected it to the iMac running 10.6.8. It came up initialise/ignore and I stupidly clicked ignore and now it just sits there. I've restarted, done a deep cache clean via applejack and nothing. How do I get the machine to see the drive again? I've also tired two different enclosures, to no avail. One enclosure has both FW and USB and drive ignored on both buses.
Any suggestion of where to look in the library? I'm reasonably confident of using the terminal if there's a unix workaround too.
TIA
Muscleman
PRAM and SMC did not work, sadly but thanks for the suggestions. I'm pretty sure I can see it on the High Speed USB bus listed in System Profiler. It goes away if I unplug it and doesn't come back in that list unless I do a restart. However I can find no way of making use of that fact.
it sits there doing an impression of a brick. I connected it to my wife's ancient HP laptop and that recognised it as an external USB HD with a problem. So it is not a brick.
If I can just see it I can do a light initialisation (no zeroing of data or anything) and I have Data Rescue 3.0 which should then be able to pull stuff of it even if it looks empty. Why I clicked ignore I don't know, and why there was no warning or how to get back from it I also don't know.

PowerBook G4 867 Mac OS X (10.4.7)Unfortunately, as you noted, not all apps are listed by backwards compatibly, and lack of it is often a bug later fixed.
The really odd thing here is that the latest version of 1 Password (3.1.1) was released 4/20/10, well before iOS4.... It most definitely IS compatible with 3.1.3 and in fact ISN'T 4.x tested. This can be re-downloaded
1 Password Pro (3.5), is a new app which was just released for 4.0, and won't install in 3.x phones. It is a new app, not an update of 1 Password, and downloading it doesn't replace the original 1 Password either in iTunes or the phone
I suggest Hecubus79 delete 1 Password Pro and re-download 1 Password 3.1.1, if it's really gone, and contact the developer for a refund for the Pro version.

ARD 3 stops responding when scanning across subnets
I am running into he same issue over and over... an
Occasionally (although it seems to happen more and more as time goes on) a scan will look like it is running but will fail to find anything. If I try to stop the scan it ignores the command, I will then get the spinning beach ball and ARD stops responding. This happens while scanning on or multiple subnets. I am running the admin console on an Intel iMac and a G5 Xserver. I've re-installed ARD twice (not a quick process) will no luck. I am running 10.4.6 fully patched.
The failure to scan seems tied to an issue where an established list will fail to "see" any systems on it... I've been deleting and rebuilding the list manually to get around this but with limited success. I am inclined to blame my network as there are some oddities in how it handles cross subnet traffic as well as severe reverse DNS issues....
has anyone else seen this behavior?Problems scanning where adding a workstation manually works would indeed seem to be an issue with the routing between your subnets. My guess, and this is just a guess at this point, is that your routers are blocking the scan (this may be deliberate on the part of the network admins as a security measure) and that ARD is taking a long time to time out waiting for replies.
The lockup when you try to cancel is a bit of a puzzle, though. A few questions:
- does it happen on both your admin systems, or just one and if so which?
- are the two admin stations on the same subnet, or on different subnets?
- when you reinstalled ARD, did you go through the full uninstall process? -
RH 9 Search Ignores Some Words in Topic Title
RoboHelp 9.0.0.228/Server 9
WebHelp Pro
RH 9 Server reports indicates that end-users are not finding topics using keywords "kaiser" and "backorder." There are topics that contain these words and the words are actually included in each of the topic titles.
I checked the following:
Project settings. These words are not on stop list nor the ignore list.
Topic properties. The "exclude from search" box is not checked.
FYI - project was upgraded from RH x5 to RH 9.
Any suggestions on resolving this issue?
Thank you,
EvaHi Eva.
What happens if you search for those keywords when you launch the help via the Web Administrator? If they don't show up there, try generating webhelp output and seeing if they show in that. If they do, I'd delete the output from the server and republish to make sure you have an absolutely clean search database.
If none of this works, can you see if there is some rhyme or reason behind this. For example are all the unfound search terms from one RH project? What other search terms in those projects do work? That sort of thing.

I have attached the PG Logs
Sorry about the vagueness in the first post just seeing if any knew of this issue with the example scripts. -

Now, when i perform some contain queries i get some behavior that i cant understand.
When i search for "this offer will expire" i dont get every row (10 rows) - why is that?

UTL_RAW.CAST_TO_VARCHAR2(MESSAGE_CONTENT)
offer expire
blah blah offer expire blah blah
blah blah offer expire blah blah
offer expire
I was thinking that the stop words will be ignored while searching in context grammar, so i would get all my rows back? Isnt that correct?
What i really want to achieve is that all these stop words are stripped from the content AND the keywords when i run the query and i get 100% matches. Any pointers on how that can be accomplished?Roger-
Thanks again. Is there any place in Oracle doc that documents these two facts?
Please see the example below, does the number of words also matter? My search phrase was "the offer will expire" but why is that i didnt get rows like "offer to expire" back?
SQL> select distinct utl_raw.cast_to_varchar2(message_content) from KWTD10569_20121010115054;

SenthilI solved a similar problem by changing the SHD start profile name under <DIR_PUT>/<SID>/SYS/profile
START_DVEBMGS01_<real hostname> to
START_DVEBMGS01_<logical hostname> and retry the phase.
Check DEFAULT.PFL for the hostname (SAPLOCALHOST)...
Hope it helps... -
[SOLVED] Postfix smtpd exits when using dovecot SASL auth
I've been trying to configure my mail server with dovecot SASL authentication. I've been following the guide here to set this up. However, when I telnet to the server on port 25, I get this in the postfix logs:
Aug 4 21:51:00 localhost postfix/smtpd[2316]: connect from unknown[192.168.1.27]
Aug 4 21:51:00 localhost postfix/smtpd[2316]: fatal: no SASL authentication mechanisms
Aug 4 21:51:01 localhost postfix/master[2312]: warning: process /usr/lib/postfix/smtpd pid 2316 exit status 1
Aug 4 21:51:01 localhost postfix/master[2312]: warning: /usr/lib/postfix/smtpd: bad command startup -- throttling
After enabling debug logging in dovecot, I get this at the same time in the dovecot logs:
Aug 04 21:51:00 auth: Debug: Loading modules from directory: /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/auth
Aug 04 21:51:00 auth: Debug: auth client connected (pid=0)

Last edited by ryukafalz (2012-08-08 15:10:31)Oh, my apologies, I'd forgotten about the -n flag. In any case, the lines you quoted from my config are for smtp client auth, which I'm not using. The three lines you provided are for smtp server auth, and they're already in my config. My fault, it's easy to miss that when wading through that huge output I provided.

Since 29/10/2012 my iphone 4s and more recently my ipad 3 will not connect to the server when trying to access my email account. All I get is an error message saying that 'cannot get mail, connection to the server failed' I hadnt changed any settings it just happened. I have since done a complete re-boot on the ipad but to no avail. Anybody got any suggestions?
No. Everything was working fine and then it wasn't. I hadn't changed any settings or switched either one off. When the phone stopped working properly I ignored it because I always have my ipad with me but that just sopped working properly and now I am stuffed. I have tried most solutions suggested on here even wiping the ipad clean and re-booting. I did this exactly the same way as when I first got it but still no joy. The same with the phone.

Tricky query needing clever SQL...
A table called alt_websearch_log records the time it takes to complete each search performed on a website. I am therefore able to write something like this:
select to_char(search_date,'DD/MON/YYYY'), count(*), avg(searchtime_secs), max(searchtime_secs)
from alt_websearch_log
group by to_char(search_date,'DD/MON/YYYY')
order by to_char(search_date,'DD/MON/YYYY') desc
...and it works fine, giving me a daily average search time over a period of weeks or months for reporting to management. The trouble is that I have to periodically rebuild the indexes that make this search work, and during the time that the rebuild is taking place -not surprisingly- search performance slows down quite a bit.
(Incidentally, I know not to rebuild indexes routinely, but these two are special, because they're Context indexes and the table on which they're built is itself completely reconstructed at weekends. It's a weird system, but we have to do it that way, for lots of reasons I ask you to take on trust, at least for now!)
My rebuilding code has been modified to insert a line into the alt_websearch_log table, so that I can select from it and see this sort of thing:
SESSION_ID SERVERNAME SEARCHTERMS SEARCHDATE
99999999999 LOCALDBSRVR START REBUILD 15/7/2008 16:00
And when the rebuild completes, I put a very similar line that says 'STOP REBUILD' at (say) 15/7/2008 18:00
So what I would like to be able to do is to run the same sort of query as I started with, but with all the searches that take place between a start and stop rebuild marker being ignored for the purposes of computing the average and maximum.
My problem is that I cannot conceive of a query that discards rows between a start and stop time that happens repeatedly (for example, I would have a START/STOP pair on 8th July, 1st July, 23 June and so on, but because manual rebuilds might sometimes happen, there's no definite pattern for when such pairs occur).
In other words, if the sorted data ran;
1/7/08 10:00 1.3secs
1/7/08 10.05 1.4 secs
1/7/08 10:10 start rebuild
1/7/08 10:11 2.5 secs
1/7/08 10:12 4.5 secs
1/7/08 10:15 stop rebuild
1/7/08 10:16 1.1 secs
2/7/08 11:00 1.1secs
2/7/08 11.03 1.1 secs
2/7/08 11:05 start rebuild
2/7/08 11:14 3.1 secs
2/7/08 11:16 3.6 secs
2/7/08 11:25 stop rebuild
2/7/08 11:36 1.2 secs
...I would want 1.3, 1.4 and 1.1 to be averaged to a total of 1.267 for 1/7/08, and the two 2 second plus searches on that to be ignored for reporting purposes. And then I'd need the average for 2/7/08 to be reported as 1.13 seconds, with the two 3+ second response times ignored, because they were recorded between that day's start/stop rebuild markers.
Whilst it is theoretically possible that a 'start' could begin at, say 5 to midnight and its corresponding 'stop' wouldn't be recorded until 5 past midnight, if it makes it any easier, you can assume that a start and a stop always share the same date.
It is also possible in real life that we might do more than one rebuild per day, but if it makes it any easier, it's OK to assume only one start/stop marker will be recorded per day. (Actually, it would be nice if you didn't have to assume that, because this is a situation I know we would definitely face at some point in the future).
I'd very much appreciate some insight into any SQL techniques that can be used to deal with this issue. I am guessing some of the modelling commands might be useful, but I don't know where to begin on that. I'm using 10.2.0.3 on Windows.
Sorry for the long question. Grateful for any help.OK build a sample table,

the logic is broken and a rebuild deosn't get logged correctly this will return odd

have a problem is a user searches for one of the two key terms. Also I have
assumed the search_time_secs will be null when you log the rebuilds.

HiI am trying to setup KMS on 2008 for activating WIndows 7 Office 2010 Citrix Virtual machines. At first I did not have a KMS key so I had to call Microsoft (it was a MAK Key). I installed the 2010 KMS installer for Office and used the KMS key to install it. It says it is licensed and it is showing in DNS. Also I am able to ping to the KMS server form the client to the client from the KMS server. Also I tried to activate on at least 5 pcs.c:\Windows\System32cscript slmgr.vbs /dlv bfe7a195-4f8f-4f0b-a622-cf13c7d16864Microsoft (R) Windows Script Host Version 5.8Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. This topic first appeared in the Spiceworks Communitythe kms count of 50 would be relating to the windows client licence, as windows client requires 25 to begin activating and stops incrementiing at 50 (double 25).
windows server is 5 to begin and stops at 10
office 2010 begins at 5 and stops at 10.
so, ignore the count of 50 as that's not what you are interested in.
ensure you are using "cscript slmgr.vbs /dli all" on your kms console, as wscript will not show you the whole story in a pleasing way.
i paste or redirect the output into a text file so i can read it more easily.

I am leaving on a 2 month vacation and would like to know if there is any way to be safe using wifi hot spots to do my banking. If so what do I need to do.
Thank you in advance,
Bruce PedersenYou should be OK with banking sites, because they use HTTPS (encrypted HTTP) with certificates your browser will be able to verify. Just make sure the URL in the browser is what it should be; for example,
https://www.yourbank.com/
and NOT
http://www.yourbank.com/
or
https://www.yourbank.somethingelse.com/
If your browser warns you that a site has presented an invalid certificate, STOP. Don't ignore the warning.
For more comprehensive security, subscribe to a public VPN service such as AlwaysVPN and install an OpenVPN client: Tunnelblick (free) or Viscosity (better). Test the setup before you leave. -
Please fix the "Capture Recording" feature...
Ok..
Here's how "Capture Recording" (a.k.a. "Retrospective Record" in other audio applications)
is supposed to work:
The song either is or isn't playing.
You play your instrument.
You liked what you did, even though you weren't recording.
You press the "Capture Recording" button.
Your software captured what you played, even though the song wasn't playing.
And that's why Retrospective Record was asked for, and implemented in the DAW's of the world.
But in Logic, if the song is not playing, and you play something you liked,
Capture Recording just puts every note onto Bar1, Beat1 of a new track.
And there's what you wanted to "capture", every note you played, sitting at Bar1, beat1, All at the same time. lol.
Now, I know that in this particular user group, there are many who love
to jump onto a fast response in defense of this application.
And that's ok, because I love this app also.
but the Capture Recording feature needs to be fixed.
Capture Recording (or "Retrospective Record" as Cubase calls it (they were first to implement it in 1995 btw))
works as described above in bold, it DOES make a very VERY big difference, believe it or not.I want My ES2 wrote:
Ah,, that must be because Logic stops sending Midi clock to ext. Instruments. I know Cubase continues to send MC when stopped, so its clock must continue while stopped and it bases(nu pun intended) your recording on this clock. But like i said, it must needs quite some editing afterwards since you didn't hear a click. The note must be all over the place, rhythm-wise. Cheers.
No, it has nothing to do with MIDI clock being enabled or not, it's the manner in which Logic's MIDI/Audio engine is implemented and can be traced way, way back. When Logic is not running, there is zero processing going on, this is part of Logic's intentional design and is one of the main reasons Logic is processor efficient, it also allows large instrument templates to be designed and loaded, if Logic's not running, no CPU is used. All other DAW's keep plugins partially active, you will always see CPU use. Early on when Mac's had limited graphics processing this was a big advantage, when Logic was stopped you had the full CPU to perform editing. This behavior was carried over as more powerful hardware was introduced.
The downside: Many of Logic's quirks can be traced to the fact that nothing is being processed when Logic is halted. The "System Overload" message, missed notes at the beginning of bar 1, not being able to play a song all the way through the first or second time it played. Say you have a region at bar 40 that uses a processor heavy instrument with a couple of Waves FX plugins... a second or two before bar 40 Logic starts to fill the FX and Instrument buffers with data as the plugins become active... "System Overload". I'm guessing Logic 10 will do what recent versions of Cubase has done, offer a preference that enables either type (active, inactive) processing.
If anyone wonders why some Cubase users get on Logic's case... it's pretty much payback as Logic users use to really slam Cubase as being unprofessional because it was pirated so much it had many, many users who were completely clueless musicians/producers.
The shoe is on the other foot now, a Mac is a dongle for Logic, while Apple would rather have your $199, they're not going to gripe at pirated versions as it will sell Mac hardware... and Apple makes their money with hardware, software is merely a support group for the hardware. As anyone on this forum can see, It's Logic collecting the clueless these days.
Users don't realize how much they owe Steinberg/Cubase...
Logic's Arrange Page
Virtual Instruments
Low Latency Audio Systems
Piano Roll style editing
And that's just a few, make no mistake, Steinberg has been the innovator on a lot of the breakthroughs.
I've used Logic since version 2.1 (MIDI Only) and Cubase since version 3. -
A forwarding email address was deleted but is still operating?!
Until end of May this year I had 2 independent email addresses in use for @mac.com (access through iCloud) to forward messages to. One of these addresses had to be eliminated for practical purposes by 30th of May, but mail keeps being returned with error messages by postmasters and mailer daemons etc. referring to that account.
I cannot seem to stop mac.com to ignore that one obsolete address which, in fact, does not exist anymore (called "illegal" by some non-delivery notifications).
What on earth can I do to stop the usage of a no longer existant account??Thank you! So far so good, I am aware that my previous setup was most likely done in MobileMe and I do remember that I "conveniently" ignored all the reminders that were being sent to make adjustments for the iCloud takeover ... it just didn't seem to apply to me; erroneous assumption as it turns out.
In the Mail preferences on the iCloud website I had entered two aliases for my mac account and added one additional outside mail account. I could not find any provision to actually forward to this address. If I did not eliminate the forwarding to the now "ghost" account, this apparently is still being used - and, as you already know, I want to desperately get rid of. I do not have AppleCare.
If I wish to go to http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/
not having a contractI with AppleCare, will they still be able and willing to help? I cannot say that I am a great expert and feel a bit lost in my predicament.
Well, I guess I'll go the the cloud contact and see what I am told. I hope I only have to get back with you to let you have the 10 points ...
