Sudden volume control/sound bug!
I began experiencing this bug tonight and I'm not sure if it is a virus?
I was watching a video on youtube and suddenly noticed that my volume was cutting in and out. After closing firefox, I could hear the volume popping in and out and noticed that the volume icon in the toolbar was going from medium to high and back. When I try to use the volume control slider, it goes from being whited out (can't move it) and back to normal, and when I try to use the volume keys, I get a circle and slash to show that I cannot manipulate the sound.
I took screenshots of this in case I needed to show someone.
It does this randomly. Sometimes it's normal, sometimes it's "stuck" and I can't get any sound, and then randomly it will pop in and out again and again. This has never happened before.
I am using a 17" macbook pro (silver keys, not the newest one). The keys on the keyboard are not stuck, they function properly and like normal.
I have tried:
verify & repair permissions in disk utility
run scripts
run onyx and cocktail
cleared all caches
installed newest version of osx
restarted and shut down countless times
cleaned keyboard just in case
If anyone has heard of this or has any suggestions PLEASE let me know. I baby this computer and I'm at my wits end!
If and only If it's a Logic Board problem, the time between symptoms appearing to failure of hardware can vary.
NOTE: I thought only this might be the problem because I've seen it happen a number of times, particularly in notebooks (because the hardware can become damaged more easily)
I can provide no definite time-frame. but, I would suggest having the machine checked by an Apple service technician, or center; as always its better to be safe than sorry.
Logic board (i.e motherboard) failures basically mean the core hardware dies, everything else, drives, RAM etc should remain unharmed. You may lose some core settings, date/time etc...

Hello, First post so please don't crucify me, but could somebody help me in understanding why I'm not able to adjust the volume when using SPDIF optical out to my Dennon amp on Zx?
What I do not understand is that if I open the Windows 8.1 sound mixer I can adjust the volume for each application? Why not the mixed volume?
Now, I guess the answer is that there is no 'final mix' stage after the sound is send to the sound card from windows and therefore SPDIF is limited when in 'pass thru' mode but really this is just semantics and a driver limitation.. would it be that hard for Creative (or MS) to design the driver or sound subsytem in such a way that the volume could be adjusted in windows rather than on my amp or per application? It seems fairly fundamental and renders my windows remote pretty useless.
Have I misunderstood the situation or is there some other way I can get this to work?Ok I think this has to be a bug.. I am doing some more investigating and the behaviour of the volume control does not make sense. I have some screenshots below, its hard to explain but hopefully I can manage to do so!
In the first scenario, changing the speaker volume up and down does NOT change the volume coming from the speakers, as you move the main Speaker volume slider the Application sliders move up and down but do not change.. example

Again going back and turning main slider down doesnt change the volume...
So you can get to a situation where the volume for the application says very low and its actually blaring out, then just clicking on the slider suddenly drops the volume.
This has to be a bug? Does anyone else have the same behaviour as this?

No sound except Flash, volume control doesn't work for that.
My sound seems to be cursed. Everything else works fine for me, but in the few years I've been using Arch I've been plagued by constant sound problems. Apparently something in a recent update broke my sound. I get no sound for anything but Flash, except Flash sound is SUPER LOUD, and doesn't adjust with the volume control. Everything else, there's just no sound. Not in VLC, Amarok, Battle for Wesnoth, or other various programs I tried. I tried VLC using the default sound output, the pulse output, and even the ALSA output just for the heck of it. No dice. I was reading in another similar topic that KDE might be the culprit, and indeed I'm using Pulse and KDE. My asound.conf is the default one that comes with the pulseaudio-alsa package. I've tried both gstreamer and xine as backends, they both have the same problem. In pavucontrol, it looks like sound is playing. If I play music or a test sound, the sound bar moves, but you still can't hear anything.
Now here's where it gets weird. Selecting a device within Phonon is screwy. In the output section, the devices listed are as follows. All but the top one are grayed out.

In any case... I'm at a bit of a loss. I just can't seem to keep the sound working on this thing. Any ideas?I think I encountered the sound problem too. I'm using a thinkpad T42, installed gnome, using ALSA. Normally I just enter runlevel 3 into the console, I have ALSA configed and the soundcard is well recognized. But when I play .mp3 using mpg123, everything goes fine but just no sound output (I setted up alsamixer previously, and had all necessary channels unmuted.). That goes several days. And one day, after setting up alsamixer, I also did a alsactl -f /var/lib/alsa/asound.status store, miracle the sound is there. But the day after, the sound disappeared again. Now I'm totally lost, leaving me thinking whether it's a Arch sound bug?
By the way, my system is most updated and upgraded.

Volume control sometimes gets stuck controlling the wrong volume - bug report?
Occasionally the volume control hard buttons on my Pre go wonky and "stick" to controlling an application as opposed to what they are supposed to. For example, I'll use the music player, and it will function fine and show the musical note when adjusting the volume. Then I'll toss away the music player app, but the volume will "stick" with the musical note and not control the system and ringer sound volumes.
This feels like a bug, but I might be missing something. Thanks!

Seems like most the time, it has happened to me if I immediately try to change the volume after tossing a card away such as music player, or video. But have had it happen a few times without any explanation. Restarting it fixes it, and luckily it does not happen that often for me. Just wanted to chime in to say its not just you though.

ITunes disables my Windows sounds and takes away the volume control
I have searched and found no answer to this- others have posted this same question.
I installed itunes and it removed my volume control from the task bar. It disabled my Windows sounds and took away the volume control from the System Tray next to clock. My media buttons no longer affect the volume either. I have to go into control panel to change my system volume.
At first- it only happened when my daughter would plug in her iPod and use iTunes, and then after we'd reboot the computer, the volume control would come back and no longer be disabled. Each time she used iTunes, it would happen again. Then a computer restart would bring it back. Now all of a sudden, nothing brings it back. I have to go about 4-5 screens deep into Control Panel to adjust the volume there. This is ridiculous and an absolutely unacceptable side effect of iTunes.
Does someone have an answer or do we need to delete iTunes and never again buy a crappy apple product?

Go to Control Panel -> Sound
In the “Playback” tab, click on your Speakers to highlight it, then click Properties. In the “Advanced” tab, under “Exclusive Mode”, uncheck the box that says “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device”. I restarted my computer after that, but I am not sure if you need to.
Then you can go to your taskbar and right-click and choose “Properties”. In the “Notification Area” tab, under System icons, “Volume” is no longer grayed out and you can now check the box to make it show up down near your clock again. -
Volume control exceeds 100%. Results in bad sound...

since Gnome 3 my volume control has a little annoying bug.
When I hit the Fn-Keys for volume or try to adjust volume with the panel icon
the volume exceeds the actual limit which is shown in sound prefrences.
This is really annoying and I'm actually afraid that it might ruin my speakers after
a while because it happens to often out of a habit.
There must be a simple way to set the limit in a config file!

My iPad 3 iOS 8.3 suddenly stopped playing sound on its speakers while I was listening on Spotify. Volume was maxxed out. Side switch not on mute. Tried rebooting thrice. Sounds won't work on other apps (Soundcloud, NPR, Clash of Clans). There are sounds when I attached my earpods. I tried the switch to mono solution on the other threads, didn't help either.
My iPad is generally muted because of classes, but when I un-mute it it works fine. It just stopped after one song, and now I can't get it to work. Any thoughts? Thanks.Hi!
I've the same issue after updating to iOS 8.3. on iPad 3.
sound is working properly only with headphones attached.
when I tap on AirPlay button it says "Docking connector" while it should "iPad"
when i play with sound settings and try to change e.g. some alert sounds, sound is played and volume slider in control center magically appears.
any other app can't play sound.
is there any fix for that?

[Solved] Can't Start Pulse Audio and No Sound/Volume Controls
Ok, I booted my PC this morning to find I have no sound controls in Gnome Shell after an update yesterday or sound, I have to use alsamixer to unmute, so I am getting sound but no way to control it. I tried killing pulseaudio and restarting but I keep getting the same error:

After a week or so of installing IOS 7 now I having this problem, the speakers don't work for videos, music or apps sounds, but they work fine for using the speaker phone. It's definitely some software issue as the volume control appears when i plug in the earphones, but disappears when unplugging them, same happens with the volume buttons on the side, they don't work when trying to use the speakers, but the work when using the earphones. Please help if you have a workaround for this. I don't want to carry my earphones all the time to listen to videos and music.
- Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
- Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack or other hardware problem.

I have lost sound on my iPad in apps unless I use headphones ,does anyone know how to get sound back without them .I have used the mute volume on the bar at bottom of screen and the slider volume control there only shows when headphones are plugged in !

The company was sold and that company produced a new version of Retrospect - Retrospect 8.x
So, as you've been told, you would have to be running a Tiger system with an old version of Retrospect software (5.x or 6.x - you would need to know) assuming you can find the software.
As best I can remember you cannot extract files from a Retrospect backup except using the software since Retrospect did not normally make a file by file backup rather it created an archive of the files in the backup. I'm assuming that the EMC/Retrospect people have told you that old Retrospect backups are not accessible by Retrospect 8.x? -
IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;
When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.
What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

I have the same problem with one of our two iPhone 4S's. I purchased 2 - 16gig iPhone 4S's at the same time from the online Apple Store here in Canada; one white and one black. I updated both the phones on the same night, within hours of eachother. Updating my black 16gig iPhone 4S went flawlessly. Updating the white iPhone 4S seemed to go fine until the day after when my wife said the volume buttons weren't working. Also, the volume slider is simply gone. The volume buttons work and the volume slider shows up when headphones are plugged in. There is volume and volume control with headphones, but not through speakers. The mute toggle switch on the side seems to work, except when it comes to sound output through the speakers.
It hasn't debilitated the device, but it's very frustrating for her because she can't hear her phone ringing. I tried the "headphone jack" trick to know avail.

Satellite P10-804: Cannot alter the sound volume control
The Sound Volume Control on the front of the unit has set itself to far in the whole and cannot be altered.
Is this something I can fix ?I dont know if you can fix it.
Do you have enough experience to disassemble the notebook?
Do you have good experience in soldering?
The volume controller is fixed on the motherboard its not easy to say what happens maybe there are some loose contacts
I think its better to contact a notebook technician because he has more experience as a common notebook user like me and you! -
Satellite A355-S6931 Low Sound - Volume Control wheel just spins
I've checked and tried everything I can find or know how to do to get enough volume and nothing works. Everything is set to 100 %. I use headphones (same ones I used with my 5 yo Toshiba). Why does that wheel just spin with no change in volume and no stopping point either way? I have to suspend my Netflix service as I have about 2% sound. Satellite A355-S6931 - 6 weeks old now.
It might as well be broken as it affects absolutely NOTHING no matter how far or how long I turn it in either direction.
I expect this computer to deliver an acceptable degree of sound. I have some hearing loss and use headphones exclusively which have their own volume control. My 6 year old Toshiba laptop would blast my eardrums out with volume if I wasn't careful to keep all controls from the max. Granted, I paid more than double as much for the computer back then and got Win XP-Prof besides. I wasn't looking for a "cheap" computer but expected comparable quality to my former Toshiba, in spite of being stuck with Vista. I could do without MANY of the bells and whistles this thing has for some acceptable SOUND. Seems like a basic provision.
Can I get the sound card replaced for something better?
What about the adapters that sell for about $10 on eBay?
BTW -- the Toshiba DVD Player won't work at all. Using Window Media Player shows the DVD but the sound is totally inaudible. I've had to suspend my Netflix service. -
I have an iPad2 that has recently been updated with 7.0.4. After turning off my iPad, I lost all audio from the iPad. Speakers work because when in Setting>Sounds> the ringer options work. YES, I have tried using the volume controls. But now the volume controls only control the ringer options.
I have changed the option under settings for the lock out to mute and back to lock out.
I have reset all setting
I have turned off and on
I have done are hard reset (holding the 2 buttons down).
I have erased everything and started all over reset.
I still have now sound from my iPad. Again the speakers work, when I go to sound under setting and play with the volume of the ringer it plays the sound.
Why is my controls now only for a ringer after the UPDATE. Is my iPad2 a paper weight?Alright I have made some progress. I used compressed air and then rubbing alcohol to clean contacts. I first powered off the iPad2 and cleaned with air. Then I used the new toothbrush and rubbing alcohol to clean the contacts (really not sure how that works, but I will try anything at this point). Twice the ipad turned on when cleaning contacts.
Outcome I now get sound from typing on the ipad like the typewriter sound. I did not have that before, but still no audio from apps or youtube, or anything else.
