Sun Messaging Server JES3
Hi Folks,
Just wanna check with you guys on the mailbox quota.
I know that it can be set per user basis like below
mailQuota: 2000000 -> 2MB
Is it possible to set per domain basis say 5MB. So all users will have only 5MB set for mailbox account on that particular domain.
Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks a million.
I think you can do this when you create users, but not after the fact.
Done with the class of service thing.

Sun messaging server 7 installation
Dear All,
I am trying to install sun messaging server 7 on an X86 machine.
However, when i try to run the commpkg install or upgrade i get the below (noting that i am using DS 6.0)
bash-3.00# pwd
/opt/sun/comms/CommsInstaller/bin
bash-3.00# ./commpkg install
-- LOGFILE: /tmp/CommsInstaller_20081218091111.log
Can not find the distro containing the Packages, i.e. could not find
/opt/sun/comms/CommsInstaller/bin/SunOS_i386/ST/Packages
Be sure you are specifying a distro for the SunOS i386 platform
Exiting at /opt/sun/comms/CommsInstaller/bin/../lib/CI/Distro.pm line 64.
Moreover, after installation, i have modified the http port to 81 and once i logged from the browser i got this
Messenger Express has been removed
Messenger Express is not supported in this version of Messaging Server.
What does this mean?

You will see that when you unzip the full comm-suite-6 download there is a SunOS_i386 directory which includes all the software that can be installed.

What does this mean?It means exactly what it says. Messenger Express has been removed. It has been deprecated for a few versions now and every single 6.3 patch has said at the end on the patch installation that Messenger Express will be removed in a future version, so does the documentation/release notes:
http://wikis.sun.com/display/CommSuite6/Messaging+Server+7.0+Release+Notes#MessagingServer7.0ReleaseNotes-MessengerExpress
If you want to use webmail you now use either UWC/CE or Convergence as the webmail interface.

Sun Messaging Server message-store inside zone (container)
Hi Guys,
i'm running Sun Messaging Server 7.3-11.01 (64bit, sparc).
Do you now if message-store inside a zone is supported?
Thank's in advance!
CaiusYes, it is supported. For more info see [Installing Communications Suite on Solaris Zones|http://wikis.sun.com/display/CommSuite7/Installing+Communications+Suite+on+Solaris+Zones].

Installing Sun Messaging Server on DMZ Architecture
Hello,
we want to install Sun Messaging Server in a DMZ Architecture and I need know if it is possible to install the Messaging Server on the private network to protect data and users, and a pop agent on the DMZ which allows the public to access to mail accounts.
For this I want to know how to install Sun Messaging Server, so I install two instances of Messaging Server over the DMZ and the other on Private, and then what there components that need be configured in each side (Store, SMTP in Private and POP in DMZ).
Finally Thank you for your understanding.
Good works.

There is an example here:
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-4439/acrqg?a=view
In your case Tier 2 would be inside the DMZ (private network) and Tier 1 outside the DMZ (public network).

Store + MTA goes on the public network.

Sync Sun Messaging Server Address Book with Mac OS X Address Book
Hello,
I am wondering whether there is a way to synchronise my address books inside Sun Message Server and on my Mac?
Does anybody know how do to this? I tried an VCF export of all my contacts from my Mac address book and imported it with the Web mailer interface Sun Java System Communications Express.
The import was done without any errors but all emails and phone data is gone so finally I got several empty contacts.
Is this a known problem? Is there a workaround or a fix available?
Does anybody know a better way for synchronization in both directions and without duplicating all records on a second import?
Thanks in advance and best regards

You can try the demo site here:

Are you able to provide an example of a single exported contact that doesn't work (import into CE)?
Does anybody know a better way for synchronization in both directions and without duplicating all records on a second import? If you can find a syncml client that is able to sync records with the Mac Address Book then you may be able to use the Mobile Communications software to sync contact information:

Clean up queue in SUN Messaging Server 6.3
I have a couple of SUN Messaging servers with each about a 1'000'000 e-mail messages in their queues.
The reason is one of our customers being infected with some trojan, and a firewall misconfiguration which allowed direct access to the SUN messagings servers (where we host our customers mailboxes) , rather then through the Postfix boxes with rate limiting, anti-spam and anti-virus scanning which they are supposed to use as outgoing SMTP servers. In short we were used as a SPAM relay. Grrr.
As you can image the queue is now filled with undeliverable e-mail and undeliverable bounces.
The question is simply can I safely delete the offending messages from the queue directory, because the imsimta qclean does a lousy job.
imsimta qclean -content=<IP-OFFENDER> -delete* found only 75'000 messages from which 20% was removed. A simple grep <IP-OFFENDER> found still thousand of messages in the queue.
Arg, by default imsimta qclean only scans message ID's found in it's own database which is limited in size (and much smaller then our actual queue size)
imsimta qclean -content=<IP-OFFENDER> -directory_tree -delete* scans the actual queue directory and found indeed over a million mail messages in the queue. After scanning for a couple of hours it removed 150'000 messages. Leaving about 85% of the spam mails untouched!
Is it safe to simply use a shell script to find and remove the messages in the queue directory and delete them? Or will that break SUN messaging servers internal queue handler?
TIA

In short we were used as a SPAM relay. Grrr.As an aside, Messaging Server 6.3 also offers rate-limiting capability (metermaid) and various anti-virus/anti-spam capability. I wrote up a general document about this at:
http://msg.wikidoc.info/index.php/Main_Page
As you can image the queue is now filled with undeliverable e-mail and undeliverable bounces. You are not the only forum person to hit such an issue recently:
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5210669&messageID=9848719
The question is simply can I safely delete the offending messages from the queue directory, because the imsimta qclean does a lousy job. Yes. If the job_controller sees that the message has been deleted, it will simply remove the queued message from its cache and move on. Depending on your log level you may see an entry in the imta log file about this.. something along the lines of file <queue file> no longer exists.
imsimta qclean -content=<IP-OFFENDER> -delete* found only 75'000 messages from which 20% was removed. A simple grep <IP-OFFENDER> found still thousand of messages in the queue.
Arg, by default imsimta qclean only scans message ID's found in it's own database which is limited in size (and much smaller then our actual queue size)By default the job_controller will only keep a maximum of 100,000 messages in cache - a percentage of this is dedicated towards new emails and the rest is queued emails. This limit is to stop the job_controller consuming all your available RAM when you get hit by events such as this. The imsimta qclean uses this cache to search for messages -- which is vastly quicker then (re)scanning so many emails on disk.
The maximum is controlled by the MAX_MESSAGES job_controller.cnf parameter - discussed here:
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-4428/6n6j425uh?l=en&a=view&q=max_messages
and here:
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-4428/6n6j425v7?l=en&a=view#bgajv
imsimta qclean -content=<IP-OFFENDER> -directory_tree -delete* scans the actual queue directory and found indeed over a million mail messages in the queue. After scanning for a couple of hours it removed 150'000 messages. Leaving about 85% of the spam mails untouched! Well I can't explain this off-hand. I would need to try and reproduce the issue in-house with an example email that wasn't matched. What version of MS6.3 are you running (./imsimta version)?
btw. you can use the "-threads=<number from 1-8>" qclean command to speed up the scanning process by running multiple scanning threads.
Is it safe to simply use a shell script to find and remove the messages in the queue directory and delete them? Or will that break SUN messaging servers internal queue handler?Should be fine - once you have removed them though you may want to run:
./imsimta cache -sync
This will kick-off a re-sync of the job_controller cache so that the job_controller is better able to process the remaining emails (rather then hitting missing email after missing email).

Is there any impact chaning ip on sun messaging server?
Hi all,
I have configured and running two sun messaging servers MTA and MS.
e.g
MTA ip address - 192.168.10.1
MS ip address - 192.168.10.2
Is it possible to change ip address on these messaging servers to another ip range? Do I need to change any messaging config file after changing ip address?
Following is my messaging server version:

I've however hit another issue with the activation of
SSL encryption on the v6.2 messaging server.
the current setup is as follows:
1) Applications installed locally:
- Sun Messaging v6.2 server
- Sun Directory Server 5.2 2005Q4 ( For config store
of messaging server)
- Administration Server 2005Q4
User/groups store is located at a existing Iplanet
v5.2 Directory Server.
3) Service account for Messaging Server v6.2:
uid=mail gid=mail
4) Service account for local directory and admin
server: root
Problem faced:
- I've used the cert wizard from the admin console to
generate a cert request and to install the cert
generated from the CA.
- I've also added the CA cert of the CA that has
generated my server cert.
- Next, i've tried enabled SSL encryption, specifying
the use of my newly added server cert. I've save the
settings before exiting from the admin console.
- However, when i login to the admin console to check
the settings again. SSL encryption is now unchecked.
- I've also facing problem stopping and starting
services using the admin console. Especially after
specifying the SSL ports to use for the imap, pop and
http services.
- When i was finally able to restart the services,
the system did not listen on the specified SSL ports.
It seems that my 'Enable SSL' setting also resets
whenever i exit from the admin console.
Greatly appreciate any help on this. Thanks in
advance.I suggest using configutil instead of the Console.
./configutil -o <setting to be changed> -v <new value>
Console is old and pretty flaky. It's going away in the next version. -
Sun Messaging Server - Filter based on Message Type
Hi,
Can I do the filtering based on the message type like Voice mail, text mail.. ?
and also can I filter the messages based on the user?sunstore wrote:

caused it to fail because JavaMail was sending it two packets
containing the data but it was expecting all the data to be in one
packet. I thought JavaMail was fixed to send it one packet, to
avoid the bug, and I thought the server was fixed as well so be
sure to check for relevant patches. And be sure you're using the
latest version of JavaMail.
If I remember correctly, telnet was batching the data for the entire
line and sending it in a single packet, which is why it worked when
using telnet.
You might try a network protocol analyzer (sniffer) like snoop on
Solaris or tcpdump on Linux to see exactly what packets are being

Hi!
I want to install a Symantec Mail Security for SMTP 5.0.1(host1) with Messaging Server 6.3 (in production - host2), but when I try to access to POP protocol to send a message from Internet, the system display a message with a relay problem.
- Could you help me with this issue?,
- Do you know some documentation that speaks of this?. I can't find any documentation that explain how to configure and integrate SMS and Messaging Server. Thanks in advance.

internet -> symantec mail security system -> sun messaging server -> recipientA better approach is the following
internet -> sun messaging server -> recipient

Thanks in advance. There is no documentation specifically for symantec software but we do document how to send emails via the symantec mail security server using the aliasdetourhost channel keyword:

Hallo
As I see, I have common problem among the Sun Messaging Server administrators. I have whole system distributed on several virtual solaris machines and some days ago emerged message size problem. I noticed it in relation with incoming mail. When I create new user, he or she can't get larger mail then 300K. Sender get will known message:
This message is larger than the current system limit or the recipient's mailbox is full. Create a shorter message body or remove attachments and try sending it again.
<server.domain.com #5.3.4 smtp;552 5.3.4 a message size of 302 kilobytes exceeds the size limit of 300 kilobytes computed for this transaction>
Interesting thin is, that this problem arised with no correlation with other actions. I noticed this problem with new users before, but i could successful manage it with different service packs. Now this method with new users, this method doesn't work! Old users normally recieve messages bigger then 300k, as before.
I tried to set default setting blocklimit 2000 in imta.cnf, but I didn't succeed.
I know, that size limit can be set on different places, but is there a simple way, to set sending and recieving message size unlimited?
Messaging server version is:
Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7u2-7.02 64bit (built Apr 16 2009)*
libimta.so 7u2-7.02 64bit (built 03:03:02, Apr 16 2009)*
Using /opt/sun/comms/messaging64/config/imta.cnf (compiled)*
SunOS mailstore 5.10 Generic_138888-01 sun4v sparc SUNW,SPARC-Enterprise-T5120*
Regards
MatejFor the sake of correctness, the attribute name in LDAP is mailMsgMaxBlocks.
I also stumbled upon this - the values like 300 blocks or 7000 blocks are set in (sample) service packages but are not advertised in Delegated Admin web-interface. When packages are assigned, these values are copied into each user's LDAP entry as well, and can not be seen or changed in web-interface.
And then mail users get "weird" errors like:
550 5.2.3 user limit of 7000 kilobytes on message size exceeded: [email protected]
or
550 5.2.3 user limit of 300 kilobytes on message size exceeded: [email protected]
resulting in
<[email protected]>... User unknown
or
552 5.3.4 a message size of 7003 kilobytes exceeds the size limit of 7000 kilobytes computed for this transaction
or
552 5.3.4 a message size of 302 kilobytes exceeds the size limit of 300 kilobytes computed for this transaction
resulting in
Service unavailable
I guess there are other similar error messages, but these two are most common.
I hope other people googling up the problem would get to this post too ;)
One solution is to replace the predefined service packages with several of your own, i.e. ldapadd entries like these (fix the dc=domain,dc=com part to suit your deployment, and both cn parts if you rename them), and restart the DA webcontainer:
dn: cn=Mail-Calendar - Unlimited,o=mailcalendaruser,o=cosTemplates,dc=domain,dc=com
cn: Mail-Calendar - Unlimited
daservicetype: calendar user
daservicetype: mail user
mailallowedserviceaccess: imaps:ALL$pops:ALL$+smtps:ALL$+https:ALL$+pop:ALL$+imap:ALL$+smtp:ALL$+http:ALL
mailmsgmaxblocks: 20480
mailmsgquota: -1
mailquota: -1
objectclass: top
objectclass: LDAPsubentry
objectclass: costemplate
objectclass: extensibleobject
dn: cn=Mail-Calendar - 100M,o=mailcalendaruser,o=cosTemplates,dc=domain,dc=com
cn: Mail-Calendar - 100M
daservicetype: calendar user
daservicetype: mail user

mailmsgquota: 10000
mailquota: 104857600
objectclass: top
objectclass: LDAPsubentry
objectclass: costemplate

dn: cn=Mail-Calendar - 500M,o=mailcalendaruser,o=cosTemplates,dc=domain,dc=com

See also limits in config files -
* msg.conf (in bytes):
service.http.maxmessagesize = 20480000
service.http.maxpostsize = 20480000
and
* imta.cnf (in 1k blocks): <channel block definition> ... maxblocks 20000 blocklimit 20000 sourceblocklimit 20000
i.e.:
tcp_local smtp mx single_sys remotehost inner switchchannel identnonenumeric subdirs 20 maxjobs 2 pool SMTP_POOL maytlsserver maysaslserver saslswitchchannel tcp_auth missingrecipientpolicy 0 loopcheck slave_debug sourcespamfilter2optin virus destinationspamfilter2optin virus maxblocks 20000 blocklimit 20000 sourceblocklimit 20000 daemon outwardrelay.domain.com
tcp_intranet smtp mx single_sys subdirs 20 dequeue_removeroute maxjobs 7 pool SMTP_POOL maytlsserver allowswitchchannel saslswitchchannel tcp_auth missingrecipientpolicy 4 maxblocks 20000 blocklimit 20000 sourceblocklimit 20000
tcp_submit submit smtp mx single_sys mustsaslserver maytlsserver missingrecipientpolicy 4 slave_debug maxblocks 20000 blocklimit 20000 sourceblocklimit 20000
tcp_auth smtp mx single_sys mustsaslserver missingrecipientpolicy 4 maxblocks 20000 blocklimit 20000 sourceblocklimit 20000
If your deployment uses other SMTP components, like milters to check for viruses and spam, in/out relays separate from Sun Messaging, other mailbox servers, etc. make sure to use a common size limit.
For sendmail relays sendmail.mc (m4) config source file it could mean lines like these:
define(`SMTP_MAILER_MAX', `20480000')dnl
define(`confMAX_MESSAGE_SIZE', `20480000')dnl
