T440s - display dead after two months.

Very discouraging.  I switched from System76's offerings to Thinkpads, and their higher prices, specifically because of component and build quality.  I handled this machine with delicate reverence ever since receiving it.
I did not purchase extended coverage/warranty for this laptop.  Must I send it in to IBM or can I take it to a local warranty service provider?  Will I have to pay for parts, or labor, for this?

Thanks, I tried a local service provider but he did not feel up to the task of diagnosing the issue since I have Linux installed.  I will send it in for service.
I am highly apprehensive that my display - which I have been happy with, and believe to be an AUO non-touch IPS display - will be replaced with an LG, widely reputed to be of inferior quality.  Is there any way I can be assured that I will receive the same kind of AUO display if/when it's replaced?

i often buy from okshop.com , so you can try .... mark..mark ...lol...

it should be covered by warranty, unless there is cracks to the LCD or other signs of user damage.
Whether you send to the depot or take it to repair service provider depends on warranty type.

It's covered under the same warranty as the phone. So long as it's not physically damaged, they should replace it for you.

  • Satellite L670 - Hard Disk Dead after 8 months only

    Hi,
this morning I had to retunr my laptop due to bad hard disk problem. After 8 months, it's dead already.
The positive points are: I am still under warranty and second the toshiba software hilighted me on time, allowing me to back up my data before the crash. Tks Toshiba for this tool, very usefull.
The question is, how can a hard disk die that quick after just fews months ?
Bad luck or bad use ? I am wondering.
I wish to have a feedback from those who owns same model, L670 (windows 7), to understand if this problem is commun or if I was unluckily concerned.
Also, if there are possible solutions to avoid HD stress in the daily use ? Like for example, reduce writing on it (back up of blu-ray using AnyDvD HD ON hd, then cut&paste to external HD), or to not connect too often external hard disk to avoid electricity surcharge if any ?
In future, will I have to perform chkdsk more often ? Defrag ? If yes, at which frequency ?
This is my 3rd laptop dying, Sony VAIO = mothercard dead after 1.2 years, Fujitsu Amilo xi = explosed after 3 years, and now Toshiba HD after 8 months.
From 900EUR up to 1600EUR, I do not see a significative resistance of one of those models, Sony was the badest ever in terms of video card longevity and compatibility (games unplayable after 2 months, no driver update), keyboard "painting" was a mess with deterioration after fews months compared to Fujitsu and Toshiba (no pb). Toshiba L670 more recent, was the best in terms of game compatibility.
What to do ? Stop buying laptop or use it only fews hours a day with a PC on top ?
For time beeing I can't afford to have a PC + a laptop as I am unemployed, surviving with 10EUR/day,
time to find a job again.
Despite this situation, I managed to buy new Zelman notebook cooler for my Toshiba at around 40/50EUR, but, it didn't help apparently.
Tks for feedback about L670 duration life, and particulary HD problem + best use to protect it.
    Guillaume

    You're not the only one.
I bought an L670 in September last year. It was strictly for home use as replacement for a desktop PC, so it was never moved.
Just after a few weeks things started to go wrong: boot fails, programs crashing, Windows 7 crashing...
It's almost 7 months now since purchase and I'm writing this message on the very same notebook with 'Hard Disk Sentinel' running in the background, reporting more bad sectors every day. It tells me that hard disk health is now down to only 9% and that it has an estimated 14 days to live.
Since the notebook is technically still running fine, I don't think I can have the HDD replaced under warranty or am I wrong? Does the HDD have to cease working alltogether before I can have it replaced under warranty?

  • IBook Rises From Dead After 3 Months!  Baffled Family Member Needs Answers

    Hi
This is a rather long-winded post, so apologies/thanks to those of you patient enough to read to the end and to anyone who can shed some light on something that is baffling me regarding my iBook G3 700MHz (mid-2002 - I think).
This iBook has been an absolute trojan, working virtually 24/7 since I got it.
Anyway, one day about 3 months ago it just wouldn't power up. Nothing. No sound, no movement or any other sign of life.
I called my local Apple dealer and they told me about the PMU reset (mentioned elsewhere in these posts), which I did, and lo and behold the old beast fired up again. There was much rejoicing. All I had to do was reset the date and everything was sweet.
A day or so later I turned it off to take it to work with me, as usual. When I got to work and tried to start up nothing happened. Dead.
I tried the PMU reset again, to no avail. Nothing would get it going again.
I took it in to the dealer for them to have a look at. When I phoned back in the evening they said the logic board was dead and would need to be replaced at a cost of AU$1,000 (about US$800)! When I asked whether there wasn't an internal battery that could be replaced, I was told the iBooks don't have them - a fact which seems to have been confirmed in other posts in this forum.
I decided to buy a new iBook.
I've been waiting now for over 2 months for my new BTO iBook, but the dealer has lent me another iBook to tide me over until it arrives. The ridiculous wait for my new iBook is something I can cover in another rant, so I'll cut to the chase now...
Today, I was tidying up and decided that i should put my dead iBook away in its box and maybe one day I'd buy a second-hand logic board on eBay or something, fix it up and use it as an iTunes player or something...
Anyway, just before I put the dead iBook into its coffin, I thought I'd just give the power button one last push, for old times' sake.
    The beast started up!
Again, there was much rejoicing. Again, all I had to do was reset the date/time.
So, as I type this on my loan iBook, I'm listening to iTunes via my SoundSticks on the old machine.
    My question is this...
What has really happened to my iBook?
If the logic board is dead, why did the machine start up again after 3 months lying dormant?
If there is no internal battery, why have I had to reset the date/time both times it restarted? Wouldn't it be logical to think that some kind of battery was storing these settings?
Doesn't it seem reasonable to think that there is some sort of battery inside the machine which has slowly built up enough charge over the last 90 days to allow the computer to boot again?
Is it that there is in fact an internal battery built in to the logic board, and when the dealer told me it was "fried", all they really meant was that the battery was dead, but because it was on the logic board that the whole thing had to be replaced?
Obviously, I'm not going to turn the old iBook off again. I'll just put it to sleep when I'm not listening to music through it, but I'm just wondering whether any of you really smart people can tell me what's going on.
I really feel that this is miraculous and need some kind of clear answers to these questions.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
    Matt
    iBook G3 dual USB 700MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hi, Matthew. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It is not uncommon for an iBook with a bad logic board to work intermittently.
There is no internal battery in an iBook. A capacitor holds the date/time information long enough for you to switch batteries, or for a short time without battery or AC power. The only battery is the main battery. If it has been left without use for some months, the capacitor has simply lost the date and time due to disuse and lack of power during that time.
When you do a PMU reset, this makes the time and date default, also.
Your iBook has been acting as one would expect, given the circumstances.
    Mystery solved.

  • Apple airport express gone dead after 14 months

my airport express base station has suddenly gone dead after use of around 14 months. service centres are not taking is as it is out of warranty. please suggest what can i do?
i tried chat session but they are unable to do anything
i tried calling apple help line and they are also not able to do anything.

    Model: A1088
    SN: HS35
No lights after 30 months of use (220V). Thanks to Apple for nothing!

  • Display disappearing after two seconds

My Macbook (about 2 years old) was fine all of last night, but this morning I opened it up and the display disappeared after a minute. Now it disappears after just a brief second.
I can toy with the brightness bringing it down all the way then up one, and it appears and then disappears quickly. Same thing happens when I close it and open it again.
    Anybody got any ideas?

Not sure but it sounds like the inverter, which is the power supply for the backlight, is failing. Do you have an Apple Care extended warranty?

  • MBP - beyond freezing - just dead after 3 months

Just wanted to let everyone know that my 2010 MBP died after 3 months.
Was programming Friday nght as usual and then Saturday afternoon the power button did nothing and the mag connector led was very dim.
The Apple store states that it is the logic board and will be 3 days to replace.
Is this the norm? Is it just the new model? The i7?
I made the switch entirely from PC to Mac and now have programming data that I need for client meetings in Mac format and cannot access. Very frustrating.
I have had Dell and HP laptops that ran without issue until retirement
and then are still running as hand me downs (about 5 years old).
I like the OS X interface and enjoy programming on the platform but as a consultant I need something reliable.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
May be related to the graphics switching. I use the gfxStatus program and usually keep the nvidia on at all times. Recently got a Dell 3008wfp and decided to re-enbale automatic switching and the system died about a week later with NO indication of any problems - good shutdown and then would never power up again...

I think that what you have discovered is the reason why there is such a thing as a warranty. Hardware fails

  • Thunderbolt Display "dead" after firmware upgrade to Version 1.2

    Hi,
I just run the Thunderbolt F/W update to 1.2 as offered by the AppStore Update. I have a 2014 MacPro with 2 Displays connected. In good faith I just confirmed to apply the update without much reading the fine print. The F/W update brought the system to a complete standstill. After 2 hours of waiting in the boot screen, I rebooted the system manually (5 secs power button). One of the Thunderbolt displays first just flickered, then decided to completely die. The System report says: unknown device in the Thunderbolt section. The 2nd display hasn't been updated during this procedure.
How can the F/W of the 'dead' display be re-installed? I also tried to connect it to a MacBook pro. Same result. The display is entirely black.
Any help or suggestion is much appreciated. Thanks!

Put me on the list as well.
I've had this TB display for two years and have had no issue with it. Clicked OK on the firmware prompt and now I have a $1000 paperweight/laptop charger.
    What I have tried:
Reset SMC and NVRAM on my MBP.
Unplugged the display from power and all peripherals and let it sit for ~24 hours before trying again.
Downloaded the firmware installer from Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update v1.2. It tells me that no thunderbolt display is connected.
So far nothing has produced a result.
System report shows an unknown device on the TB port.
A used logic board for the display is around USD$220 on ebay.
I really wish I had not attempted to install the firmware now.

  • Replacement iPod Touch 8GB (2nd Gen) beggining to fall apart after two months!

Well my problem is plain and simple
My first iPod touch (8GB 2nd Gen) was working perfectly fine until one day it slipped from my hands and the screen shattered. I took the iPod in to Best Buy and they overlooked the serial number and looked up my plan (product replacement plan) and they took it in and sent it out. They promised me a refurbished or a new iPod touch. They said it should take only about 5 days but it took two weeks, but in all fairness it was around a busy holiday seasons so i can understand the holdup. My Apple warranty was already up when i took the first iPod in for a replacement so i just used my product replacement plan. 2 weeks later i recieved my refurbished iPod in the mail, how could i tell it was refurbished, well for one the back of the iPod was void of any scratches but there was no Apple or "iPod" branding?! They also did not include the headphones used with current and past models, they shipped headphones that were changed years ago to a new design, i tested the headphones, and they were broken. I just said oh well and when i went to plug it in with the "new" cord they included i noticed there were stains all over it and i had to disinfect them (..yuck!) it made me certainly rethink even using the headphones in the first place. One thing that seemed odd to me was that it included OS 3.0 since 2nd gen iPods only ship with OS 2.2.1 and after checking the settings i confirmed it was in fact a sencond generation iPod Touch. After about a week of use i plugged in my headphones and i could only hear through one side, i unplugged them and replugged them and the problem was resolved and i thought it was a fluke, so i just disregarded it but its been a month now and since last week no matter what headphones i use i always get sound from the left channel. I was honestly furious that after only 1 month the ipod it starting to fall apart in front of me. I inspected the iPod closely and noticed that if held a certain way the glass on the lower right coner of the iPod begins to move around. The home button has also failed to respond quite a few times. Then when one day the external speaker started to begin to become flaky and sometimes not work at all, i just said "thats it!" im currently resetting the iPod to factory settings and putting a test sound on it for them to listen to and see the problem. In fact when i received it there was already a test sound on it so i presume there was a problem with the jack previously? I am repackiging everything and am off to geek squad tommorow, if there is any other advice to offer please let me know. Ive treated the iPod like a child after the first one shattered and the device has never been dropped, the screen and the back cover are spotless (minus the small scratches on the back chrome cover just from normal use) the iPod has never been near water and i checked the iPod to see if infact water could have gotten in the iPod and the sticker was still sparkling white, i am sorry Best Buy ive been a customer for years and while do not mean to rant and complain it has only been to months and its already falling apart?! i am sorry that is just not acceptable.

I just got my ipod touch 2nd gen 8gb replacement ipod in the mail two days ago. And i fell that my screen has cracked way to easily. I had my other ipod touch before this one for a year and a half and the screen had never been cracked. But my first two days with this "replacement" ipod has cracked twice. i am willing to take the blame for the first crack as i dropped it in the street and my case didnt do its job, but lasnight i put my hand in my sweatpants pocked only to find small peices of glass. i took out my ipod and there was the problem. a large shatter on the bottom near the homebutton. Seriously 2 cracks in 2 days with my REPLACEMENT after 360+ days and no cracks with my forsure APPLE ipod touch? I doubt my ipod touch screen is even made by apple.

  • New G5 DEAD after two days

I have a DP 2.3 G5 and a 23" CD and it worked fine for two days. Was running 2.5 Gigs of RAM, working great. Yesterday while running iTunes and a few other things the 23" CD went to sleep, though the music continued to play. I moved my mighty mouse to wake the display and the machine froze, and the music stopped. Tried to restart with the power button, finally had to unplug, and not it won't start. Power button turns on, fans come on but I get no chime and the light ont he power button goes out (no blinking). No LED. I've removed the added RAM, same result. I've removed ALL RAM, and got the LED but no chime or beeping. I've reset the PMU, no change.
    HELP

With only two days experience, it's hard to tell what is wrong, since there wasn't time to tell what was right!
First step is to run the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) that is on the Software Install DVD that came with your computer. Until you know that the hardware and any extras such as the additional RAM is working, we can't make much progress diagnosing what went wrong.
Be prepared for the AHT Extended Test to run several hours, for your fans to all run at full speed and for the display to stay lit the entire time. What a way to spend Thanksgiving! Start the test just before you leave for your holiday dinner and it should be done by the time you get back. Post your results and you'll get lots of advice, but you have to provide specifics of what is right before we can work on what went wrong.
P.S. Your G5 won't run with no RAM, so put back what it came with, but leave out the additional RAM, then run just the Quick Test to make sure the stock hardware is OK, then add your additional RAM and go for the Extended Test.

  • After two months, the macbook is whining

so after having this for almost 2 months, it now whines. If I call, will they let me send it in? I didn't buy the warranty but what is the length of the warranty that comes with it?
I just opened iMovie to try something out, and as about to close it, the computer starts to whine. I am so mad right now.
any help would be appreciated. thanks
    -bense

Apple's warranty is for one year. Call and Apple will send you a box to ship the computer for repair.
Be advised, however, that there is some controversy regarding sounds the system makes during normal operation.

  • Had Ipad stolen after two months of having it on mother's day!

My Ipad was stolen from me on Mother's Day, yes Mother's Day. I just left my dad's house after dropping my kids off with him to hang out. When I returned home my Ipad charger was still plugged into the wall, but the Ipad was not hooked up to it. (I was charging it before  I left the battery was dying and my dad stays less than 20 minutes away). Well after making a police report weeks later my brother confessed his thug friend stole it from out of the house. Unfortunately that thug moved to another county and the police won't make an arrest unless I have a name and a address although I had a telephone number. I already had Icloud registered on my Ipad before it was stolen, but it has yet to locate it. Is there another possible way of finding it?

I mean it's pretty obvious the police have something better to do. I just hate that somebody would go as far as to steal. I guess I take it so personal because I bought it the same week my doctor called me to let me know there were no more tumors (they were turning into cancer). I mean when your 22 you don't want to find out you have tumors turning into cancer and your in your second stage. So my test coming back negative for cancer cells and my 23rd birthday being a week later was AWESOME! You always have that one person that tries to break you he ****** me off, but good things came soon after!
Thanks for the advice BobTheFisherman sometimes I try to catch myself, but sometimes people have to remind me hey just buy a new one! lol
