T60p does not boot from new primary hard disk (Single-boot Linux/Fedora 14)

Hi,
I have just upgraded the primary disk in my T60p laptop (model 8742-C4G.) The BIOS recognised the disk fine, I partitioned it, marked the first partition as bootable, and then copied the OS (Fedora 14) and all my data back onto it. Then I installed the GRUB bootloader using the following commands:
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> find /grub/stage1
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit
I've also tried installing GRUB with "setup (hd0,0)" instead of "setup (hd0)", without success.
This ran fine, exactly like with all the other PCs I've successfully performed this procedure on in the past. However, this laptop is refusing to boot from the new disk. There's no sign of any activity, either - just a flashing cursor in the top-left corner of the otherwise blank LCD panel. So I'm guessing that either the bootloader is failing immediately, or the laptop isn't executing the bootloader at all.
The laptop is running the very latest v1.18 BIOS, and there are no beeps, POST errors or anything like that. My previous disk booted into Fedora 14 without any difficulty at all, of course.
Can anyone suggest why the T60p is not booting, please? And also how to fix it? Is there any extra initialisation that I need to do in the BIOS, for example? (I haven't seen any...) The disk *does* appear in the BIOS's list of bootable media. Or maybe there's some special code that needs to be written into the MBR that GRUB doesn't know about?
The disk is a 320 GB 7200rpm Western Digital drive, and the Lenovo/IBM salesperson assured me that it was fully compatible with a T60p laptop without the need for any extra firmware.
Thanks in advance for any ideas, because I'm completely stumped at this point.
Cheers,
Chris
N.B. This is a Linux laptop, and so Windows-centric suggestions aren't going to help me.

You said you can't get into Windows safe mode, have you installed Windows on the hard drive?  Are you able to get into the BIOS for the controller?
If you aren't able to access the BIOS for the controller, it may be due to bad RAM.  If you are comfortable installing RAM and you have some extra laptop RAM of the same type (I think it's DDR3 for your controller) laying around, you can try swapping out the RAM.
Was your hard drive damaged through some event, or did it just stop working?

Did you erase the hard drive yourself? If not, what exactly are you seeing, and what happened immediately prior to you starting to see it?
Your profile indicates that you are/were running Lion (Mac OS X 10.7.4) on a retina MacBook Pro, so you should be able to hold down command-R at startup to enter recovery mode, and you can reinstall the system from there. But whether or not you need to do something else first depends on your answers to the questions above.

  • MacBook does not see content on external hard disk

I copied my user directory from my PowerBook to an external hard disk. Now i have a MacBook instead and it cannot see my files. I can however see files from another user. If I look at the filesize and how much is in use, then I can see that there is more on the external hard disk. It also says I have the right to read and write.
    What should I do?

If you can see the home folder on the external disk and it has a red circle on its icon, drag the folder to your desktop and type in your administrator password when prompted.
If you cannot see the home folder in the external disk but know where it is, navigate to the enclosing folder, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, and enter the folder's name as the path.
If you cannot see the home folder and don't know where it is on the hard disk, copy and paste the script posted here into the Script Editor in your /Applications/AppleScript/ folder, run the script to show the invisible items on the disk, locate it, and do what you want with the contents.

  • CS5 does not start from new SSD disc

I have recently exchanged my HDD with a new SSD disc on a Macbook Pro running Mavericks. I have put an image of my original disc on the SSD and after installation everything runs fine as it should, except of Illustrator CS5, which doesn't even start up.
    I get the following error:
Adobe Illustrator cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure Adobe Illustrator works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any available updates for the application and OS X.
If I actually plug in my old HDD as USB disc and start CS5 there, it runs no problem. Hence it doesn't seem to be a problem of the OS (anyway, it worked fine before changing the discs).

  • Lightroom 1.4.1 does not recognize directories on external hard disks

I just upgraded to Lightroom 1.4.1 and, now, cannot export files to external hard drives. Lightroom sees the external drive and it is displayed with the standard + indicating sub directories are available. when I click the +, it disappears and nothing shows under the external drive folder.
This was not a problem with 1.3.1

The only thing I can think of is that the Library is corrupted in some way. Unusual that the main computer can access it - though it rebuilds the thumbs each time, whiile the other two cannot. I suspect that the permissions warnings are bogus.
Neither of the other machines would be able to read that library without updating it, and in fact, once the 9.5.1 version updates it, the 9.4.3 version wouldn't  be able to read it either.
But either way, each library should ask to upgrade it upon opening, that the don't suggests that the Library is damaged.
You need to decide what version you want to want to view this library with - as you can't view it with either of the other two once you upgrade it. Then from that machine rebuild the Library with iPhoto Library Manager.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Nobody can.  You did not provide any details.  It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions.
Please describe in detail all you have attempted to do in order to resolve the issue.

  • MacBook won't boot from new hard drive.

I'm trying to upgrade my hard drive, but my macbook will not boot to the new hard drive. I have erased and cloned the hard drive about three times now, using both Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper. It won't boot while it is in the macbook and it won't boot from an external hard drive case. All I get to is the screen with the mac logo and the spinning wheel. I have made sure the drive is GUID formatted, but it still doesn't work. When I put the new drive in an external case and plug it into the USB port of my macbook I can see and access everything on the drive. Can somebody please tell what I am doing wrong?
By the way the new hard drive is a 500gb western digital Scorpio blue drive.

I got a new hard drive recently 500gb seagate. I followed the directions on this page http://www.ehow.com/how2063795format-hard-drive-mac-os.html , Mine was a little more complicated since i had 2 partitions windows and mac on mine. Initially the process took a day and it started getting to the same thing as yours where it would get to the mac logo and not find the hard drive. I reformatted several times before i got to the point where i could boot up.Eventually I just figured out all the info was there the drive was formatted i could boot into windows 7 but not mac. So i put old hard drive back in the computer booted up with that. Attached new hard drive via usb in external case i was trying to put in the mac. I was able not to boot up but it would show the drives that have been formatted into the new drive and i simply copied my existing Disk by dragging it onto the new hard drive. Than turn off your mac keep your hard drive plugged in. Press and hold the option key in start up and you should see the 2 seperate hard drives and be able to boot into the new one. Was a long process for me took several complete deletes of the new hard drive and reformatting before it would work. once you get to the mac logo and spinning wheel its just saying mac cant find your boot up disk though. Sorry its confusing a bit any questions email me.

  • Macbook wont boot from new hard drive.

I installed a new Western Digital 500GB hard drive into my Macbook Pro (2006 edition). The computer boots up, but it just stays at the screen with the apple and the thing circling underneath it. It won't go any further than that. I have to boot from my external hard drive to get to the Operating System.
Also it won't shut down nor restart unless I hold down the power button.
I installed Snow Leopard 10.6 on the new hard drive. The longest I waited was like 10 minutes. Should also note that there is a CD stuck in my CD/DVD optical drive (I used an external drive to install snow leopard)...I don't know if that's interfering. It didn't interfere with my old hard drive.
I've also used Disk Utility. It says the disk needs repairing, so I repair it, and it says successfully repaired, but I can't shut down or restart the computer, so I have to shut it down by holding the power button. When I turn it back on, it says it needs repairing again. Maybe it's not saving because of the improper shut down?
    Please help

Did you format the new drive before trying to install the OS?

Try that, and if still no joy, you might have a defective drive. If so, WD will replace it under warranty.

  • How do I transfer music and photos from my Power Mac G5 to my new iMac. Have an old FireWire but it does not fit the new iMac

I am trying to transfer photos, music, etc from my Power Mac G5 to my new iMac. The Power Mac is too old for the migration assistant to help. I have an old Firewire but it does not fit the new iMac. Any suggestions? If a Firewire is the best option which one do I need? Thanks.

You need a Firewire 800 to 400 adapter or cable or a external USB 2/3 drive (self powered) it can default to the old USB the G5 uses 1 or 2.
    Format the drive info here.

My Macbook air flash had gone for a month and I saw Apple's Macbook air flash storage drive replacement program. I'm not sure whether that program is still available for the broken device or not. Now, I'm booting from the external hard drive. Warranty has gone in October 2013..
I want to send back my macbook air back to apple store. The problem is that I bought it from US and now, I'm using it in Myanmar. If the program is free of charge for my device, it's worth trying to send back to US. Since mine is broken, I'm afraid Apple will take charges for reparing.
So, if anyone having the same problem as me, I would like to get suggestion....
    Thank you!!

I have no idea about how to handle the international aspect of your question.
But here is the Apple writeup about the problem and the remedy.  Maybe that will help you.

  • I want to Boot from My old hard drive.

I an trying to do this work around so I can continue using protools 7 with my MBP running Snow leopard. I pulled out my old hard drive running Tiger and put it into a USB case. I installed a new 650GB hard drive in to my laptop, installed Snow Leopard and reinstalled all my old software. So far so good. Now I want to boot from the old hard drive running Tiger so that I can launch Protools 7. I choose the external HD as the startup disc and end up getting a circle with a line through it on startup.
Is there something else I need to use my old hard drive running Tiger as a startup disk?
    Thanks!

If the original HD still has the version of Tiger installed on it that came with the MBP (probably Mac OS X 10.4.8, build 8N1037, 8N1051, or 8N1430) or a later version of Tiger like 10.4.11, then the MBP should be able to boot from it.
To determine what OS & build number is on that drive, open the Startup Disk system preference. Hover the pointer over the drive's image in the window & the OS version & build number will pop up in a ToolTip window after a brief delay. What does it show?
Also, which MBP do you have? Open System Profiler to the Hardware Overview page. What is the Model Identifier shown in it? Is it "MacBookPro2,2" or something else?
Assuming the OS version & build number are sufficient to boot the MBP, it may be that the USB enclosure does not support booting. Most do, a few do not. What is brand/model of the enclosure? Do its specs specifically say it can boot a Mac?
If all of this seems OK, you can try running Disk Utility's two repairs (permissions & disk) on the external drive. If no errors are found, you may be able to get it to boot the Mac by reinstalling Tiger on it from the original system disc set. This will require updating the OS to the latest version you had installed on it for best results.
